York Racecard - Friday 11th October

Page 1

Welcome to York for the Finale Meeting of our 2024 season. A raceday with seven fascinating races, record prize money of £320,000 as well as a Countryside Market open to all stands side racegoers located on the ground floor of the Ebor Stand with lots of ideas for Christmas (see page 22). I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day.

It has been a tremendous year on the track so far, with some of the very best racehorses and jockeys in the world having competed at York and gone on to further glory elsewhere. Whether it was from a memorable hour on just the second day of the season back in May when Bluestocking and Economics won the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton and Dante Stakes respectively, prior to landing the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Irish Champion Stakes. Or perhaps Bradsell making it back to back Group One sprints for Archie Watson’s yard by winning both the Coolmore Nunthorpe and Flying Five. The likes of Economics, Mill Stream, Calandagan or Al Nayyir carry strong Knavesmire runs into QIPCO British Champions Day next weekend. We will then hope to see York form taken to the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar - notably through superstar City of Troy, now rated the highest turf racehorse in the world (see p46 for more) I hope you have enjoyed an action-packed season to date and thank you for your support.

Our second race at 2.05pm is a contest only in its third season, offering connections of two-year-olds a chance for a £100,000 prize as the British European Breeders’ Fund have backed this valuable series for juvenile colts and geldings. A suitably strong field includes Inconspicuous now trained by Gay Galloway, who won at York earlier in the season. What a race we have in store.

This afternoon’s feature handicap is the £100,000 William Hill backed stayers race for three-year-olds over 14 furlongs. Who’s Glen is one of several runners today for trainer Andrew Balding, as Team Kingsclere look to build on their lead in the Charles Clinkard Top Trainer Championship. A strong showing could see connections interested in a return for the Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 23 August 2025 over the same trip, you can buy your admission already so take advantage of the price freeze by visiting our website today.

The fifth race today celebrates Copper Knight, the winningmost horse on the Knavesmire in the modern era. Since the Denham family first raced their favourite here at York, he has already won on seven occasions from 30 starts. Trained by Tim Easterby, the first win was on his Knavesmire debut back in May 2017 You can see a plaque in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the Weighing Room, you’ll notice we have just said “winningmost”, as he may well not be done, as he runs in his own race today. One of his regular rivals is Dakota Gold, the Michael Dods trained stalwart could claim the glory and so take a share of that “winningmost” title

The meeting will also see the conclusion of the season long contest to be top jockey at York. In the Living North-sponsored contest, Oisin Murphy sits atop the field, in search of his second York title (2018 being his previous crown). His engagement at Newmarket over the next two days, creates a window of opportunity for a late charge, perhaps from four-time winner, Danny Tudhope Please see page 56 for the story so far.

We have some top class racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors; William Hill, Parsonage Country House Hotel, the connections of Copper Knight, European Breeders’ Fund and it being a Friday, one final visit for this year from the team at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing.

A particular welcome to the members of the Racing TV Club who join us for some live action today; if you want to follow the channel uninterrupted then the big screen above the Roberto Bar is your destination.

Thank you for your support, I hope you enjoy your afternoon.

Bustardthorpe Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

Today you can see a multi-million pound project that improves this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers, it was opened in August by HM The Queen and is now ready for you to enjoy. We’d value your feedback, as with any new development it should come on for the run.

The Roberto Pavilion provides a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar. As well as, tote & William Hill outlets.

The Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy should be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar & dedicated Guinness Bar that flank it.

A state of the art William Hill betting shop has reopened, with a new block of toilets.

In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples.

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.

• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.

We hope you enjoy it.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.

Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse. co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Rating: 86-105

Prize Money: £30,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Inside Rail

Underway with a handicap, remember the handicapper as an independent judge, who seeks competition by giving differing weights to contenders based on previous runs. This time we are assessing 4yo+ horses over a mile and Blue For You takes top weight here.

Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; no surprise but Blue For You is one to offer both aspects of form.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: HAFEET ALAIN

Trainer: Ed Walker

Connor Planas continued his profitable partnership with the experienced Hafeet Alain. They sat prominent before keeping on well to land the prize.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 35.60s

Course Record: 1m 34.35s by Croupier (18-May-23)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): D O’Meara (27 wins from 377 runners, 7%) runs BLUE FOR YOU, PADISHAKH & THEORYOFEVERYTHING

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): G Boughey (8 wins from 47 runners, 17%) runs NAXOS

Longest Traveller: HAFEET ALAIN trained by E Walker, Upper Lambourn, 202 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 9th October

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Hafeet Alain remains 4lb higher than when winning this last year and needs to reverse last month’s running at Goodwood with NAXOS. The latter finished a creditable third on heavy ground on that first outing since February, and a bold bid is expected from the four-year-old racing off the same mark. Padishakh went close in a competitive handicap at Ayr and can make his presence felt, while there was some cut in the ground when Blue For You scored here during the summer and he’s not out of this.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Race Type: Conditions

Prize Money: £100,000

Age: 2c&g

Stalls: Farside

Only in its third year this valuable race is limited just to 2yo colts and geldings who are European Breeders’ Fund eligible This nascent series seeks to reward those younger horses of real potential who missed out on the usual programme of Pattern races, perhaps due to a niggling injury. All the runners have finished in the top six of an extensive programme of Maiden and Novice races backed by the EBF All would start from a 9st weight however previous success adds weight at varying amounts depending on the grade of the race won; that explains the burden carried by Kempton winner, Amiloc. To add a layer of competition (or for some complexity) a runner’s weight can be lowered (an allowance) based on having been bought comparatively cheaply at a recognised auction, so the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and hence potential. The most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter Any horse from a lower Band racing in opposition to one from a higher Band benefits from an allowance, which is a long-winded way to explain the reduced burden for inconspicuous who went under the hammer for the lowest figure in today’s field. If you don’t want to concern yourself with that complexity, then it is probably “favourite colours “ time

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 22.90s Course Record: 1m 21.58s by The Lion in Winter (21-Aug-24)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): A Balding (27 wins from 179 runners, 15%) runs BIG SIP Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Beckett (13 wins from 53 runners, 25%) runs AMILOC Longest Traveller: AMILOC trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 9th October

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Unbeaten in a couple of outings at Kempton, AMILOC has a leading chance on today’s terms despite his penalty. The son of Postponed beat a subsequent winner with plenty to left in the tank on his latest start and can go close if proving as effective on this surface. Pellitory produced another good effort in a nursery over a mile at Doncaster and has solid claims on that showing, while Praetorian wasn’t at his best on a trip over to Sweden last time, but had shown progressive form before that. Mr Fantastic and Stratusnine are others capable of making their presence felt.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

William Haggas has trained three of the last five winners of this race and THE REVEREND arrives with strong claims of adding to that tally The latter won by three lengths over 1m4f at Ascot on his handicap debut, despite being eased down in the closing stages, and can defy a 9lb hike with the possibility of plenty more to come over this extra distance. Minstrel Knight won easily over today’s trip on testing going at Haydock a fortnight ago and is preferred to Master Builder, who scored on faster ground at the same venue, while Who’s Glen romped home at Chester last time but will find this a more difficult test

Having struggled to land a blow in tougher assignments than this in recent starts, KING’S CALL is likely to be seen to better effect in these calmer waters Having his first run in nursery company, his mark of 94 could prove lenient. Teej A (second) is fancied to reverse the form with the reopposing Fuji Mountain (first) off much better terms after the pair met over 5f at Chester last month, while End Of Story should prefer this test after struggling when behind the selection in Listed company last time

COPPER KNIGHT VS DAKOTA GOLD

Our fifth race sees a battle between the sprinting metals, as both Copper Knight and Dakota Gold slug it out against 16 rivals.

Copper Knight, the record holder here, currently sits one ahead of Dakota Gold after he recorded his seventh win back in July 2023. In the race named after him by owners the Denham Family, he goes in search of win number eight, for trainer Tim Easterby.

Trained by Michael Dods for Doug Graham, Ian Davison & Alan Drysdale, Dakota Gold could tie Copper Knight were he to win today’s contest. It is shaping up to be a fantastic spectacle.

Still a handicap, this time for 3yo+ horses though still over five furlongs.

“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 95 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar Van the man is the brown-eyed horse with the heaviest burden.

Need some help? If you want to talk York form, then Copper Knight has it in spades being the winning most horse here, will today mark a new record of eight victories, mind you Dakota Gold boasts six!

KNAVESMIRE TIP

BROOKLYN NINE NINE ran on strongly when only narrowly touched off over 5f at Ascot last time and he can go one better today. Richard Fahey’s runner was sent off favourite for that assignment and despite a 3lb rise, he can gain compensation here. Course winner Good Earth runs off the same mark as his half-length second over 5f at Hamilton last month and he warrants respect, while Enchanting was a good winner over 5f at Goodwood in August and she can offer a bold bid despite an 8lb hike. Given their relative physical development in their first year of action, fillies would have started from a lower weight, however none have taken today’s challenge As Apache Green opened his account at Pontefract he must shoulder more weight than his male rivals.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

FONDO BLANCO should have learned plenty from his debut third on soft ground at Newbury last month and that race experience could prove crucial. Roger Varian’s colt ticks plenty of the right boxes and a breakthrough victory may be on the cards. Belgrave left behind his opening sixth at Kempton when filling the runner-up spot at Newbury 21 days ago and he’s feared most, ahead of penalised Pontefract winner Apache Green.

A farewell handicap open to horses 3 years plus, over seven furlongs. What makes it a bit different is the jockeys. Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by balancing the past success of their chosen jockey against a weight reduction for using a pilot who is still developing. Thus, the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name See how Mostar Dreams benefits from 7lb claim by Shay Farmer, whereas No Nay Nicki is partnered by Sean Dylan Bowen, who is currently second in the Apprentice Jockey Championship

The Press selections board by the Winner’s Enclosure could find you a winner, or a scapegoat.

If you win this race you can claim bragging rights until we do it all for one last time, starting at 1.30pm tomorrow afternoon.

FEEL THE NEED has acquitted himself with credit since his C&D triumph in late May and he could be worth chancing on his return to this venue Sam Feilden takes the ride and his 5lb claim allows the four-year-old to effectively race off the same mark as for that victory here earlier in the year. Be Frank was an eye-catching fourth when staying on well at Newmarket 20 days ago and a 1lb drop in the ratings should see him in the mix. Justcallmepete and Another Baar are others to note.
