A very warm welcome to a day of both speed and endurance at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. The race programme features both the fastest race of our season – the Group 1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe, as well as our richest staying race – the Group 2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup. Both races form part of the QIPCO British Champions Series and the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe is also part of the “win and you’re in” Breeders Cup Challenge Series for the Turf Sprint.
The feature sprint puts a spotlight on some of the quickest horses; battling it out for a prize fund of £500,000 It is a race run in under a minute, so take your place, hold your breath and enjoy. The field includes last year’s surprise winner, Live In The Dream and York maiden winner, Bradsell. The bookies lists see Asfoora and Big Evs as closely matched as their recent performances on the track. The Aussie raider took the Group One King Charles III at Royal Ascot, before Mick Appleby’s Yorkshire owned star turned the tables on the Sussex Downs. The best-of-three conversation will run through to race time Keep your eyes on that giant digital clock.
A little earlier in the day and it’ll be the turn of the leading juveniles to contest the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, it will tell us which connections are to address the 253rd Gimcrack Dinner in December
Operating at the other end of both trip and experience is another previous champion, the Hughie Morrison trained, Quickthorn, who faces eight rivals in the longest race of the week, the Group 2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup. The Yorkshire contender is Align The Stars who carries the colours of local businessman, Tony Farmer Trained at Kingsley House in Middleham by Charlie Johnston, it is a race treasured in the family after the dual success of Double Trigger in the mid-1990s, for his father, Mark.
If that wasn’t enough, we have the richest maiden race in the land, one of twenty-three York contests to receive the generous backing of the European Breeders’ Fund, notepads and Ipads at the ready come 4.45pm, a star may well be revealed.
Today has been billed as the most jockey-centric race day ever seen on a British racecourse, when jockeys will be involved in a raft of novel activities with the aim of engaging, entertaining and educating racegoers and TV viewers. They’ll be riding in races too. Amongst the activities to look out for, are riders wearing their surnames on the back of their breeches, Autograph signing sessions, a Jockey Gym in the Clocktower Enclosure, two retired ‘classic-winning’ jockeys – Martin Dwyer and Paul Hanagan – joining the Punter’s Panel at 12.50pm. Finally, please give whatever you can to a collection at the end of the day by the Matt Hampson Foundation on behalf of Graham Lee, after his life-changing fall when riding at Newcastle
The “World Pool Moment of the Day”, is an initiative that sees an expert panel select a highlight on each of the three weekdays The member of racing staff from the yard who looks after the horse awarded “World Pool Moment of the Day” will win £4,000. The winner will also be in with a chance of winning “World Pool Moment of the Year” which will be determined by a combination of scores derived from a public vote and a global expert panel and announced at the Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin in December The lucky winner will win a VIP trip for four to Hong Kong for either the 2025 Hong Kong Derby or 2025 Champions Day
In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the Grantley Hall Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room. Partners such as Grantley Hall themselves, The 8th Sign and the Hole in Wand are offering great prizes for all you stylish racegoers, plus it is great fun!
Visit our equine ambassador, Goldream, the retired racehorse in Clocktower Enclosure, while you are there try the “jockey gym”, listen out for the Shepherd Group Brass Band, dance into the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Gardet Origine champagne for just £43 a bottle, enjoy the 360-selfie camera or taking your own selfie at the flower wall; whatever, it is just our pleasure to welcome you and hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Bustardthorpe Development
Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.
Today you can see a multi-million pound project that improves this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers, it is now open for you to enjoy. We’d value your feedback, as with any new development it should come on for the run.
The Roberto Pavilion provides a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar. As well as, tote & William Hill outlets.
The Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy should be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar & dedicated Guinness Bar that flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop has reopened, with a new block of toilets.
In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples.
THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:
• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings.
• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.
If you are here on Saturday, please join us for the Official Opening at 1pm.
We hope you enjoy it.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse. co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.
Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

Helping Yorkshire EBOR COMMUNITY SWEEPSTAKE
The Ebor Community sweepstake is an innovative initiative which seeks to thank, celebrate and reward some of the countless thousands who have helped others in the county. Working with our partners at Sky Bet and others, we invited nominations. Out of the 100+ entries, we now have shortlisted 22 who will all be joining us on Saturday – they will each be assigned a runner in the Sky Bet Ebor and the charity or community group attached to the winning horse will receive a prize of £20,000. What is more, the second placed horse will earn £5,000 for its connected good cause, £2,000 to the third place duo and all the others benefit from a £1,000 donation.

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION
THE SKY BET LOWTHER (GROUP 2)
Day two kicked off with a cracking renewal of the Sky Bet Lowther, that saw Ed Walker claim victory with Celandine.
The Rockcliffe Stud owned juvenile was returning to face her own sex, after a good showing against the boys on her previous start.
The race began with the eventual winner taking a keen hold under Tom Marquand, as the pair made their way to the front of the field. Her rivals were content to let her go out in front and fanned out across the track in the early stages.
Upon reaching the two furlong pole, the field began to mount their challenges as Celandine slowly began to wind things up on the front end. Tom Marquand looked confident on the filly, extending his advantage his rivals to a couple of lengths.
Ryan Moore looked to be travelling powerfully on Heavens Gate but she was unable to mount a serious challenge Leovanni also moved up strongly for Karl Burke and James Doyle but the long time leader had saved enough in the tank to thwart their efforts
Inside the final furlong she really hit top gear to pull away from her rivals and despite the late charge from Time For Sandals, she was always doing enough to hold them at bay.
Following the race, the Cheveley Park was touted as a potential target, our sponsors Sky Bet make her a 8/1 shot for the race.
THE PERTEMPS
NETWORK YORKSHIRE OAKS (GROUP 1)
A fantastic renewal of the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks saw supplemented filly Content fly down the farside to record an eighth win in the race for Aidan O’Brien.
The Daughter of Galileo was last seen finishing second to You Got To Me in the Juddmonte Irish Oaks, so came here with high expectations. She was extremely keen under Ryan Moore in the early stages but was eventually settled in midfield by this weeks leading jockey
Stable companion Port Fairy took them along at a good gallop, with the experienced Group winner Emily Upjohn stalking her every move in second.
Coming down the home-straight, the majority of the field chose to race down the centre of the track, with the Clarehaven mare moving effortlessly into the lead under a motionless Kieran Shoemark.
You Got To Me was sent in pursuit by Hector Crouch and stayed on stoutly to reel in the Gosden trained runner. The pair looked to have the race between them but it was instead Ryan Moore and Content who came with a rattling run to win the race for Ballydoyle.
It was another impervious ride from Moore, who is now the seasons leading jockey and in winning, gained himself a fourth win of the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
A progressive sort last season, SHADOW DANCE looked to be back on track when second at Ripon a month ago The son of Almanzor is likely to be much better suited by going back left handed and he is narrowly preferred to the improving Wafei, and Mr Monaco, who should appreciate going up in trip after an emphatic success over 1m2f at Sandown last time out. A winner over C&D in July and consistent since, Lieber Power is another to note, along with Grey Cuban and Insanity.

RACE HISTORY?
Distance
Two miles (3,200m)
Prize money £250,000
The race started life as a Listed contest and was called the Lonsdale Stakes, run over 1m7f198y It was promoted to Group 3 level in 1998, before being renamed the Lonsdale Cup and given Group 2 status in 2004. The distance was extended by 110 yards in 2007.
LUCK OF THE IRISH?
Since 1980, apart from Willie Mullins who won the race with Max Dynamite in 2015, only Aidan O’Brien (2007) and Dermot Weld (2014) have won this race
SALUTING THE CROWD?
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
The very best stayers in Europe have their season geared around “the Cup Races” of which the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup features strongly With Classic and Gold Cup at Royal Ascot winners amongst its roll of honour, it is a race that is right up there with the best of them.
WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST SUCCESSFUL?
That honour befalls six horses who have each won the race twice - Further Flight (1992 & 1993), Double Eclipse (1995 & 1997), Celeric (1996 &1999), Persian Punch (1998 & 2001), Opinion Poll (2010 & 2011) & Stradivarius (2018, 2019, 2021).
Whilst he may not have been the highest rated, the much missed Sergeant Cecil was certainly a favourite with the Knavesmire crowds where he won four times from seven starts. He landed this prize in 2006 before following up in the following month’s Doncaster Cup, which was run here due to redevelopments on Town Moor His other victories here included the Sky Bet Ebor in 2005 and the 2007 Boodles Yorkshire Cup. Sergeant Cecil Opinion Poll
John Dunlop
LEADING TRAINERS?
John Dunlop holds the record with five victories. Mark Johnston and David Elsworth have both won the race three times. John Gosden, saddled Stradivarius to win three renewals and in between his success, he won the race with Enbihaar in 2020 He now only sits one behind record holder John Dunlop With Gregory charged with levelling the score today.
LEADING RIDER?
Frankie Dettori surpassed Pat Eddery’s mark of five in 2019 thanks to Stradivarius. The pair then went one better in 2021 but his retirement from British racing leaves the door open for a new name to chase the pair down, albeit one win is the current total for any of today’s riders
WHAT AGE GROUP HAS THE BEST RECORD?
Since 1980 four-year-olds lead the way having won the race 13 times. Five-year-olds are next best, with nine victories, while three-year-olds have seven and six-year-olds have six. Stradivarius (and Fujaira Prince & The Grand Visir) became the first seven-year-old to win this since Sergeant Cecil in 2006. The great Persian Punch being the other in 2001.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
If you read your racecard carefully, you may have noticed that Weatherbys are the team behind this racecard and those at thousands of other race meetings. As well as this specialist printing and editorial service to racing they are its civil service, keeping the administration of the sport on track. The equine insurance arm of the business supports this particular race.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
The recently retired Mark Johnston has been a leading light for the White Rose county having won the race three times. Double Eclipse won the race twice in 1995 & 1997 with his dual Gold Cup at Royal Ascot winner Royal Rebel adding the third in 2000 Tim Easterby has also been successful when his St Leger winner Bollin Eric landed the honours in 2003. The Yorkshire contender is Align The Stars who carries the colours of local businessman, Tony Farmer Trained at Kingsley House in Middleham by Charlie Johnston, it is a race treasured in the family.

Race preview from Weatherbys
It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York this afternoon, a valuable Group 2 for the stayers with a competitive field ofninesettogotopost.
Point Lonsdale leads the way on official ratings for Aidan
O’Brien.
The son of Australia backed up a comfortable six-and-a-half length victory in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester with a solid third in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud lasttime, keepingonatthelineover a mile-and-a-half. This new trip is unknown territory for the five-yearold, but he brings plenty of Group 1 form and class to the table as he bidstogivehistrainerjustasecond victoryintherace.
Vauban moved stylishly trough the Ascot Gold Cup before his stamina reserves appeared to run out over the extended trip, and he was unsuited by the way the race developed in the Curragh Cup last time. He is likely being set up for another tilt at the Melbourne Cup, and Willie Mullins’ dual purpose six-year-old is a strong traveller that should be suited by the track. Gregory didn’t appear to give his
true running at the Royal meeting but showed a return to form when third in the Goodwood Cup last time. This looks a slightly easier assignment and the 2023 Queen’s Vase winner would give the Gosden teamtheirfifthwinintheraceinthe lastsevenyears.
Quickthorn couldn’t back up his impressive Goodwood Cup victory when only sixth in this contest last year but made all in devastating fashion when winning this race two years ago by a widening 14 lengths. He has a fine record here at York, runner-up in the 2021 Ebor HandicapandaListedwinneronthe Knavesmire last June, so a return to the track may spark a return to form.AlNayyirenjoyedasuccessful spell out in Meydan at the start of the year, highlighted by his runnerupfinishintheDubaiGoldCup,and makes his stable debut here for new trainer Tom Clover. KNAVESMIRE TIP
Aidan O’Brien looks to have a prime candidate in POINT LONSDALE, who has long shaped as though he would relish this trip A taking winner of the Ormonde at Chester in May and a promising third in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud since, the son of Australia looks primed for a big run. Vauban had the reopposing Gregory (third) behind when runner-up in the Yorkshire Cup here in May, and both are likely to be thereabouts once again. A comfortable winner of a Group 3 here last month, Alsakib continues to progress and may turn out to be the main danger to the selection.

HISTORY IN THE RUNNING: KINGSGATE NATIVE
The fastest race on the Knavesmire has an impressive roll of honour, dating back over a century, to its first staging in 1922.
So many memories, the blistering pace of a track record-holder Battaash, the first female rider to win a Group One (Ya Malak under Alex Greaves), tremendous back-to back triumphs for Mecca’s Angel and Borderlescott (will Highfield Princess join that list today?); then there are the juveniles.
It is rare for the two-year-olds to even get a chance to compete against their elders at Group One level, so perhaps no real surprise that their victories have been famous (okay, rare).
Only five of them have taken full advantage of the significant weight allowance, this year they have decided to stay racing against their peers.
High Treason, My Beau and Ennis offered encouragement for the plan, winning three from four, in quick time between 1953-1956. Various tilts all then came up shy until 1992 when Michael Roberts booted home, Lyric Fantasy.
So, to the only juvenile winner since, ergo the only one this millennium, Kingsgate Native. His 0.58.14 seconds of fame came in 2007, in partnership with Jimmy Quinn for trainer, John Best.
That famous afternoon was one of eight victories for Kingsgate Native, including the then Group One Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot. Still winning aged eleven as recently as 2016.
After a stint helping the young jockeys at the British Racing School, he is now enjoying a thoroughly deserved retirement at Cheveley Park Stud. We know you will join us in welcoming him back, when he parades before the big race, today.

BIG RACE TRENDS
THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI GIMCRACK STAKES (GROUP 2)
PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS
TRAINER
Of those with runners this year, Kevin Ryan has the best record having won the race four times, courtesy of Amadeus Wolf (2005), Blaine (2012), Astaire (2013) and most recently Emaraaty Ana in 2018 He has one live chance today in King's Call who will have to defy his long odds.
RECENT FORM
A last time out victory is not essential with five of the last ten winners having had such form to their name However, it is worth noting only two horses in the last decade had finished outside of the first three on their most recent start, as Lake Forest became the second last year A negative for both Billboard Star and King's Call.
Interestingly, less than half of the winners in the last decade contested a Group race on their most recent outing, so don’t be shy to look beyond those already proven at Pattern level.
CONCLUSION
DISTANCE
Six of the last ten winners of this race had previously won over this 6f trip suggesting that the proven ability to stay the trip is becoming more and more important compared to the noughties, when many had not yet graduated from five furlongs. The likes of Big Mojo and Symbol Of Strength are yet to attempt this longer trip.
BETTING
In the last decade there have been only three winning favourites of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack but they all came in the last six years. Nine of those winners were sent off at single-figure odds. An average starting price of around 5/1 also suggests that it is important not to stray too far from the market leaders.
KEY TRENDS
Win over six furlongs
Finished in first three last time Avoid outsiders in the market
A super competitive renewal of the The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes sees 10 runners head to post. King's Call is the logical place to start for Kevin Ryan. His record speaks for itself and King's Call could be one to outrun his odds. The trends show that many winners of this race have already scored over six furlongs so it could be worth looking past one of the strong fancies Mojo Star, albeit defying a strong field in the Molecomb Stakes Horses coming towards the fore of the market are worth keeping on side and The Strikin Viking has gone agonizingly close in defeat twice at this level but is becoming slightly frustrating to follow. The unbeaten Shawdow Of Light also commands respect but CAMILLE PISSARRO looks ready to take his chance for Aidan O'Brien. The son of Wootton Bassett has had his form franked by recent Phoenix Stakes winner Babouche since their run in the Anglesey Stakes. That reads incredible well and Aidan O'Brien can land the spoils for the first time since Rock of Gibraltar in 2001.

Having been worn down late on at the Curragh and Goodwood on his latest starts, THE STRIKIN VIKING just about sets the standard on form, and returning to a track where he scored on debut in June is a big plus. GLOBAL TARGETS AWAIT...
The field in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe demonstrate the global nature of top class flat racing competition. To further encourage this competition, various famous racing associations around the world have offered attractive incentives to the winner.
The QIPCO British Champions Series takes place over several racedays, comprising five championship categories. Each features the seven highest-rated races in that category, including today’s Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe - an important sprint leading up to QIPCO British Champions Day, Britain’s richest raceday with £4 million in prize money on Saturday 19th October.
The field in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe demonstrate the global nature of top class flat racing competition. To further encourage this competition Breeders’ Cup Ltd have offered an attractive incentive to the winner as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. The successful sprinter this afternoon if nominated with Breeders’ Cup will receive both free entry and a guaranteed start gate in the five furlong $1m Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint to be run at Del Mar on Saturday November 2nd Combined with a travel allowance of $40,000 this is a bonus to California bound connections and this represents an exciting innovation this year
TOP JOCKEY AT
BLOODSTOCK EROES H
COOLMORE
Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York. The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough.
The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree.
Coming up to date and Coolmore, sponsors of today’s feature race, continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Originally, a relatively small farm, owner Tim Vigors, a famous fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, began transforming it in 1968 and after going into partnership with Vincent O’Brien and Robert Sangster the three men built it up into the well-known stud farm it is today. Vigors sold his interest to O’Brien and his son-in-law John Magnier and it was Magnier who built the stud into a multi-national, multi-billion-euro operation.
On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. Coolmore’s greatest stallion, Galileo, who was sadly lost two years ago at the age of 23, destroyed his rivals in both the Epsom Derby and the Irish equivalent before completing an impressive hat-trick in the King George at Ascot. Following his retirement, he was Champion Sire in 12 different years having sired a staggering 91 individual Group 1 winners.
If you were to glance at his most successful progeny, you would see that he has sired many of the best racehorses in recent years, making an indelible mark on modern horse racing. These include Frankel, New Approach, Australia and Gleneagles - all now stallions in their
own right but this is by no means a coincidence.
Galileo was not only a super sire, but he made his name as a sire of sires, with an incredible 20 of his sons having sired Group 1 winners in their own right, and that trait has no doubt been passed on from his sire Sadler’s Wells. He too stood at Coolmore and comes from the Northern Dancer line, regarded as one of the most productive bloodlines in the history of thoroughbred racing.
In Galileo’s (and the recently departed Mastercraftsman’s) stead, Coolmore now stand numerous big race winners in Camelot, Churchill and more recently Saxon Warrior, St Mark’s Basilica and Paddington, all looking to continue their huge influence on the bloodstock world. One standout is Camelot, who now has 39 Group winners and 22 Stakes winners worldwide including this year’s Irish Derby winner Los Angeles and Curragh Pretty Polly winner Bluestocking. This afternoon’s feature race title nods at yet another whose prospects look as bright as his on-course career, Wootton Bassett. The son of Iffraaj already has 77 Flat Stakes performers, which includes 30 Group winners. Al Riffa picked up the Westminster 134th Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppergarten. While Unquestionable achieved Breeders’ Cup Glory when wining the Juvenile Turf last November.
Coolmore continue to produce Classic winners year on year and as a result continue to set a benchmark, in part thanks to the exploits of the great Galileo, who will be much missed.

A BRIEF HISTORY? THE AMERICAN CONNECTION?
Distance
Five furlongs (1,000m)
Prize money £500,000
The race is named after Nunthorpe, an area of York located to the north of the racecourse
The first version, a low-grade selling race, was established in 1903 before the present version began in 1922 when it was won by Two Step.
The race became part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series in 2011 which means the winner of this year’s race earns an automatic invitation to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland, Kentucky on Saturday 4th November. Star US-trained filly, Acapulco ran an eye catching second in 2015 and Lady Aurelia filled the same spot in 2017, just pipped at the post by Marsha in a thriller. Golden Pal failed to make amends in 2021 for Wesley Ward
TWO-YEAR-OLDS?
The race is one of a limited number of races in which two-year-old horses can compete against their elders. The first of just five juveniles to win was High Treason in 1953, and the most recent was Kingsgate Native in 2007. This year they have chosen to compete in races against their peers.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
It is one of only three Group 1 five furlong sprints in Europe - the others being the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp on Arc day.
FOREIGN RAIDERS?
Ireland’s Dermot Weld won the race in 1984 with Committed. Since then Aidan O’Brien has added a musical double with Stravinsky (1999) and Mozart (2001).
France’s Robert Collet won the race in 1986 with Last Tycoon as did John Hammond with Nuclear Debate in 2000 despite his non-French passport. Australia chipped in when Ortensia won for Paul Messara in 2012, giving the race a full international flavour The antipodean baton has passed to Asfoora this afternoon. With Ponntos representing the Czech Republic

Kingsgate Native
LEADING TRAINER?
Ossie Bell currently holds the record with 5 victoriesHighborn II (1926, 1927), Greenore (1932), Concerto (1933) & Ipsden (1937). In the modern era Aidan O’Brien, Michael Dods, Sir Mark Prescott and Charlie Hills have each won the race twice. Tim Easterby won the race in 2021 with York specialist Winter Power.
LEADING RIDER?
The late Lester Piggott holds the record with 7 victories – Right Boy (1958, 1959), Matatina (1963), Caterina (1966), Tower Walk (1969), Swing Easy (1971) & Solinus (1978). Of the current crop, Jim Crowley and Paul Mulrennan are the only jockeys to ride more than one winner, thanks to their association with Battaash and Mecca’s Angel respectively
HAT-TRICK HEAVEN
A Century since its first staging, only two horses have managed to win the Coolmore Nunthorpe three times - Tag End in 1928, 1929 & 1930 and Sharpo in 1980, 1981 & 1982. Defending champion, Live in the Dream would join the elevated company of dual winner’s Mecca’s Angel, Battaash, Bordelescott and Sole Power, since the turn of the millennium.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Now in it’s sixteenth year of sponsorship, Coolmore are a worldwide breeding and racing operation.
With studs in Ireland, Australia and the United States they stand some of racings leading stallions including Camelot, Australia, Churchill and Wootton Bassett.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Not too bad at all. In 1997, the White Rose county won the race twice! The David Barron-trained Costal Bluff and the much missed David “Dandy” Nicholls-trained Ya Malak dead-heated for first place. Nicholls then won it outright with Bahamian Pirate in 2004 before our old favourite Borderlescott won back-to-back in 2008-09.
Mecca’s Angel scored for the second year in a row for Michael Dods and the North in 2016. Yorkshire have continued their fine form in recent years as Tim Easterby claimed the prize in 2021 with Winter Power. John Quinn’s superstar Highfield Princess landed the race in 2022, rounding off what was an excellent season. It falls to Kevin Ryan (Washington Heights) or Ed Bethell (Regional) to hoist the white rose today.

AGE
Since 1958, there have only been eight winners of the Nunthorpe aged six or above suggesting that we should view their chances with a degree of scepticism, however it is worth noting that all eight of those happened in the last eighteen years, including the 2018 winner Alpha Delphini and Battaash in 2020, so perhaps it’s a trend on the move. With this in mind, it could be worth continuing to side with the veterans in the field such as the market leader Asfoora and course and distance winners Regional and Clarendon House.
KEY RACES
The best guide is Royal Ascot’s King Charles III Stakes which has supplied eleven of the last twenty winners of the Nunthorpe. Run over 5f, the race was upgraded to a Group 1 in 2008, and since then Borderlescott, Ortensia, Sole Power and Battaash have all taken it in en route to the Knavesmire. This year's King Charles III field is represented by the Asfoora (1st), Regional (2nd), Big Evs (3rd) and Believing (4th) who all re-oppose here.
CONCLUSION
RECENT FORM
Nine of the last ten winners achieved a top four finish on their most recent start, with Sole Power, Mecca’s Angel, Battaash (x2) and Highfield Princess the only four to get their head in front on their latest run. It’s also worth noting that all of the last ten winners had already won at least once earlier in the season, so this isn’t a race in which you want to be relying on a horse bouncing back to form.
BETTING
The Nunthorpe has been no stranger to big priced winners in recent seasons, with Sole Power (2010), Margot Did (2011), Jwala (2013) Alpha Delphini (2018) and last year's winner Live In The Dream all obliging at odds of 20/1 or bigger. Historically however, the race has shown favour towards those at the head of the market with thirteen of the last twenty winners coming from within the top four in the market.
KEY TRENDS
Ran in the King Charles III
Finished in the first four last time Won at least once this season
If we take the view that the King Charles III is the race to follow, this narrows down the field to four. Of those four, two currently make up the front of the market and Asfoora (1st) and Big Evs (3rd) look evenly matched on form with the latter reversing the placings in the Group 2 Qatar Stakes. These two are likely to be involved in the finish once again. A chance is taken though with the third from the Qatar Stakes BELIEVING who has been rock solid all season. Ryan Moore jumps back in the saddle since riding her to a comfortable success in the Sapphire Stakes and should be able to reverse the form with Big Evs, now receiving weight. Last year's hero Live In The Dream should be primed for this and also ties in with the leading form, while course and distance winners Regional and Clarendon House remain of interest.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Already established as two of the world’s fastest sprinters, ASFOORA and Big Evs are honours even from their Group-race clashes at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood and stand out as they as the gear up for round three of their personal battle The margins will surely be tight if both run up to expectations but, armed with a 6lb turnaround after a short-head defeat in the King George Stakes, Asfoora shades the narrowest of votes over her arch enemy. Regional and Believing are no back numbers and can give the ‘big two’ a good run for the money. Whereas City Walls winner Starlust has only raced four times over the minimum distance and could be a surprise package 2023 hero Live In The Dream appeals for a place this time

KNAVESMIRE TIP
POWER OF DESTINY had to sit and suffer when short of room during her clash with Al Anoud at Goodwood last month, but the manner in which she stayed on for a head second after extricating herself suggests the daughter of Sea The Stars can turn the form around if she enjoys a clear run this time. Dangers lurk from every angle in a field of this size, with the likes of Battle Queen, Reach and Sound Angela all suggested as potential improvers Last-time-out winners Chorus and Invisible Friend also enter calculations in this competitive handicap

The most valuable maiden in the UK calendar, this race is limited to 2yo horses that have yet to win a race.

By this stage of the afternoon some will have resorted to their choice of “ps”; with the pin in 2yo nursery handicaps, even the richest one in the land, having a fair record Pedigree is the second option, being the more professional “p”.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
A very competitive contest sees a chance taken on ANGELO BUONARROTI, who made a pleasing start to his career when beaten just three lengths in the Coventry at Royal Ascot. Rashabar, the winner of that contest, has since run well in Group 1 company and Ralph Beckett’s charge could get off the mark at the second attempt as he’s dropped in class. High Season pulled well clear of the rest of the field when bumping into a progressive rival over 7 1/2f at Beverley last Wednesday and with scope for plenty of improvement, he rates as the biggest danger, while Shah is also in with a shout.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Having not quite lasted home when collared late on over 1m2f at Goodwood earlier this month, MIDNIGHT GUN is likely to relish this drop in trip Hamad Al Jehani’s charge was denied a hat-trick by just half a length on that occasion and a 3lb rise in the ratings doesn’t appear out of his reach. Golden Mind will have to defy top-weight to claim this prize but, having run well in the Vintage at Goodwood, he could be a Group horse in a handicap Blue Prince warrants consideration despite being raised 4lb for his win over 7f at Goodwood last month.
