A very warm welcome to Ladies Day at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. Appropriately, with what looks to be fascinating renewals of the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks, the Sky Bet Lowther, the EBF and Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes and our second European Breeders’ Fund backed fillies handicap as the last, all featuring fillies or mares, there are four races offering a record reward of near £1m in prize money, exclusively for connections of female horses. The above four races combined with the valuable Goffs UK Harry Beeby Premier Yearling Stakes and the ultra-competitive £150,000 Clipper Stakes, offer fabulous action on the track that looks top quality. This made possible by both your attendance and the backing of our partners and sponsors – thank you all for that support.
The feature Group 1 Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks has attracted the Juddmonte Irish Oaks winner and close second, You Got To Me and Content, who renew rivalry as three-year-olds. They are taking on older thoroughbreds with proven Group One form, such Emily Upjohn. The locals will be cheering if Lava Stream, from David O’Meara’s Malton yard, can defy her odds.
As if that wasn’t enough, we have the Sky Bet Lowther, the richest Group 2 for juvenile fillies. The unbeaten Leovanni will hope to follow up a Royal Ascot victory for trainer, Karl Burke. Spigot Lodge lead the line for Yorkshire, with three runners including Unspoken Love in the colours of race sponsor, Steve Parkin.
We are delighted to be staging the ultra-valuable Harrys Half Million by Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes. The race has, in the past, showcased the talent of Wootton Bassett, the star colt that gave Malton trainer Richard Fahey his first Group One victory and is now a successful Coolmore stallion. This year the winning trainer will also receive free use of the Theault horse box, as seen in the Owners & Trainer’s Car Park.
As today sees the running of the EBF and Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes, we are proud of the set of wrought iron gates that serve as a permanent way of remembering him. They stand at the northern end of the course, near the statue of his most famous charge, Frankel who delivered that spellbinding win, now over a decade ago
If you have a fancy for the Sky Bet Ebor then you’ll want to be at the Winner’s Enclosure for 11.30 today, as the live stalls draw is conducted. Significantly, it will also link the 22 good causes in the Sky Bet Ebor Community Sweepstake to their contender, see p30-31 for more details of this £46,000 charitable initiative.
The “World Pool Moment of the Day”, is an initiative that sees an expert panel select a highlight on each of the three weekdays The member of racing staff from the yard who looks after the horse awarded “World Pool Moment of the Day” will win £4,000 The winner will also be in with a chance of winning “World Pool Moment of the Year” which will be determined by a combination of scores derived from a public vote and a global expert panel and announced at the Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin in December The lucky winner will win a VIP trip for four to Hong Kong for either the 2025 Hong Kong Derby or 2025 Champions Day
In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the Grantley Hall Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room. Partners such as Grantley Hall themselves, The 8th Sign and the Hole in Wand are offering great prizes for all you stylish racegoers, plus it is great fun!
Visit our equine ambassador, Goldream, the retired racehorse in Clocktower Enclosure, while you are there try the “jockey gym”, listen out for the Ripon City Brass Band, dance into the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Gardet Origine champagne for just £43 a bottle, enjoy the 360-selfie camera or taking your own selfie at the flower wall; whatever, it is just our pleasure to welcome you and hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Bustardthorpe Development
Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.
Today you can see a multi-million pound project that improves this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers, it is now open for you to enjoy. We’d value your feedback, as with any new development it should come on for the run.
The Roberto Pavilion provides a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar. As well as, tote & William Hill outlets.
The Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy should be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar & dedicated Guinness Bar that flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop has reopened, with a new block of toilets.
In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples.
THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:
• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings.
• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.
If you are here on Saturday, please join us for the Official Opening at 1pm.
We hope you enjoy it.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse. co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

THE SKY BET GREAT VOLTIGEUR (GROUP 2)
Ballydoyle looked to have a strong grip going into the contest and only strengthened their hand with the late supplementary entry of Irish Derby Winner Los Angeles. After his fine staying performance in Ireland, this was always going to be made a good test of stamina by the pacemaker, Euphoric, who set stern early fractions from flag fall.
Illinois and Wayne Lordan sat closest to the leader, with Los Angeles completing the Emerald Isle trio in third. King’s Gambit was stepping up in trip for the first time was the subject of sustained support in the market before the off. William Buick however didn’t look so assured of his stamina and was clearly at pains to conserve energy in the early stages. Coming into the straight, Declan McDonogh began to turn the screws on the The Euphoric and the pair put a few lengths between themselves and the rest of the field. Ryan Moore travelled into the contest powerfully on Los Angeles, with the pair breezing past the long time leader. Both Illinois and King’s Gambit made their challenge down the nearside and it became apparent that the winner would come from this trio. It looked for a moment as though Harry Charlton’s runner was coming to claim the prize however his stamina looked to give out close home and he was forced to settle for third.
Illinois pushed his stablemate all the way to the line but try as he might he could not get to the classy Los Angeles. The Curragh Classic winner would go onto win by a neck, giving Aidan O’Brien and Coolmore the middle leg of a memorable treble.
THE JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL (GROUP 1)
Yesterday we saw the confirmation of another superstar in City Of Troy, who continued to prove his early season promise in emphatic fashion.
Ryan Moore was quick to send the three-time Group One winner into the lead, making use of his good early speed. He stacked an stellar looking renewal of the Juddmonte International in behind him, with Royal Rhyme and Hans Andersen completing the leading trio.
He was given a relatively uncontested lead by his rivals, with the Japanese contender Durezza charting a noticeably wide course around the bend Second favourite Bluestocking was anchored in midfield by Rossa Ryan, with the pair deploying their usual hold up tactics.
The Epsom Derby winner quickly had all his rivals under the pump as they entered the final three furlongs. Ghostwriter emerged as the leading challenge as they got racing but he was unable to land a blow on the impervious Ballydoyle runner.
Calandagan faired much the best of those held up, with the Gaelic contender staying on admirably to pick up the chase. Stephane Pasquier had delivered a near perfect ride but unfortunately bumped into the superstar that is City Of Troy.
The race was all over inside the final furlong, with Moore easing down to win by a length to Calandagan. Ghostwriter battled back well to complete the minor placings however this race was only about one horse, City Of Troy.

WHERE DOES THE RACE NAME COME FROM? IS IT A CLASSIC TRIAL?
It was named in memory of Hugh Lowther, the 5th Earl of Lonsdale It was established in 1946, and the inaugural running was won by Southernwood.
Yes, many winners have gone on to run in the following year’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas. Russian Rhythm was the last to complete the big-race double in 2002/03
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
As a Group 2 it is only one rung from the top of flat racing’s ladder
Criquette Head
ANY OVERSEAS INTEREST?
Criquette Head won the race four times for France in 1982, 1987, 1996 and 2009 and Pascal Bary (2007) and Philippe Sogorb (2013) added two more for our cross-channel cousins. Irish-trained fillies have won the race six times, courtesy of Dermot Weld (1977), Vincent O’Brien (1981 & 1990), Jim Bolger (1984) and Ger Lyons (2011). Aidan O’Brien finally broke his duck in this contest in 2018 as the smart sprinting filly, Fairlyland, held off The Mackem Bullet in a thriller
WHERE NEXT?
The next obvious target following a big run in the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes is the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. Run over the same distance, eleven fillies since 1974 have added a Rowley Mile victory to their already impressive resumes - Cry of Truth (1974), Pasty (1975), Devon Ditty (1978), Mrs Penny (1979), Dead Certain (1989), Queen’s Logic (2001), Carry On Katie (2003), Hooray (2010), Rosdhu Queen (2012), Tiggy Wiggy (2014) and 2018’s winner, Fairyland. Fairyland
Richard Hannon Senior
LEADING TRAINERS?
Richard Hannon Senior leads the way with five victories courtesy of Enstone Spark (1977), Only Yours (1990), Niche (1992), Infamous Angel (2008) & Best Terms (2011). In his first season in sole charge Richard Hannon Junior added a sixth family winner with Tiggy Wiggy in 2014. Mick Channon saddled four winners, Brint Allayl (1998), Queen’s Logic (2001), Flashing Wings (2005) & Nahoodh (2007), before handing over the training licence to son Jack, neither family is represented today. Karl Burke has bagged two of the last five and goes in three-handed today.
LEADING RIDER? RECORD BREAKER
Harry Carr, Ron Hutchinson, Richard Hughes & the much-missed Lester Piggott share the honour of having won the race three times but all are retired now. James Doyle has been on board two of the last seven winners, he partners Leovanni today.
Tiggy Wiggy’s winning time of 1m 8.90s in 2014 was not only the fastest for this race but also smashed the six furlongs course record. In comparison, Soar’s victory in 2004 came in a time of 1m 15.90s - exactly seven seconds slower. In her defence the ground was much softer that year

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Since 1974, the prize has remained in Yorkshire just five times. However, in recent times, Yorkshire lead the way with four of the last seven winners trained in the county Richard Fahey took the prize home to Malton in 2016 with Queen Kindly, while the trophy went to Middleham in 2017, after Mark Johnston’s Threading again boosted Yorkshire’s record in the race Spigot Lodge have claimed two of the last five, Living in the Past (2019) and then again in 2022 with Swingalong. Leovanni, Miss Lamai and Unspoken Love carry three different sets of silks for them today, the latter for the race sponsor, Steve Parkin.

The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the coveted Charles Clinkard Trophy and a smart pair of shoes (worth £250) plus £2,500 for the stable to share and a Christmas Party here at York in December.
City Of Troy came home a ready winner of the Group One Juddmonte International, moving Aidan O’Brien one behind the leading trio. 2023 Champion: Richard Fahey

TRAINERS
Karl Burke has emerged as a trainer to watch after two wins in five years. He brings a strong hand again this year with Leovanni, Miss Lamai & Unspoken Love.
RECENT FORM
With twelve of the last eighteen winners of the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes having won on their most recent starts, it suggests that recent form is an important factor to consider. Interestingly, of the six who fail on this trend, four had achieved a top three finish and only Silk Blossom and Hooray completely missed out by each finishing 6th.
BETTING
Swingalong joined 2019's 12/1 winner, Living In The Past, joined Hooray, Best Terms and Besharah in causing a stir when landing the spoils at 11/1 in 2010, 2011 and 2015 respectively. There has been a move away from short priced horses with only three winning favourites in the last ten years. Consider horses above 5/1, so everyone but Leovanni and Heavens Gate.
KEY RACES
The Princess Margaret and Queen Mary Stakes, both run at Ascot over 6f and 5f respectively, have been the best pointers in recent years. If you were to favour one race then it would have to be the Princess Margaret Stakes with Enthused (2000), Russian Rhythm (2002), Soar (2004), Lady Of The Desert (2009), Besharah (2015) and Zain Claudette (2021), all having followed up their Ascot victory by winning this afternoon’s race. Living In The Past was also third in the Princess Margaret Stakes before winning here in 2019. Leovanni, Miss Lamai and Betty Clover contested the Queen Mary, while the later also finished runner-up in the Princess Margaret ahead of the third-placed Tales Of The Heart.
DISTANCE
There is nothing to be gained in this area as in recent seasons there is a pretty even split of winning fillies which had already won over six furlongs and those that are attempting this trip for the first time.
KEY TRENDS
Won or placed last time out
Ran in the Princess Margaret Stakes
Above 5/1
CONCLUSION
LEOVANNI has been foot-perfect on both starts to date to remain unbeaten. She follows the trend of running in the Queen Mary Stakes, which is a great trial for this, to come home a comfortable winner at the Royal Meeting. She must give 3lb to all rivals today but can improve again and looks the pick of the Karl Burke trio. Betty Clover contested both of the key trials but was narrowly denied in the Princess Margaret. Eve Johnson Houghton success often comes from her juveniles and she can confirm the placing with Tales Of The Heart Heavens Gate is the sole representative from Ireland after her emphatic success at Naas She could step forward again but foreign raiders don't have a great record and is becoming exposed. Karl Burke has won two of the previous five renewals so Miss Lamai and Unspoken Love can't be dismissed either.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Queen Mary winner Leovanni is aiming to protect her unbeaten record and she sets a lofty standard for the others to aim at with a rating of 106. Karl Burke’s juvenile holds obvious claims, but it may pay to side with HEAVENS GATE, who has shown improvement with each run to date and was impressive in her victory at Naas last time. The daughter of Churchill has plenty of speed and this looks like an ideal opportunity to gain her first Group success. Betty Clover is the pick of the remainder

The six fillies in this race are granted a weight allowance based on their relative physical development compared to the boys and thus carry less weight at 8st 11lb, see Ghost Run and Maw Lam amongst those to benefit. At the other end of the scale, if a horse has won a race then they shoulder a “penalty” burden, the better the category of any such win then the greater the penalty weight, notice how a Group 3 win at The Curragh has added to the challenge for Arizona Blaze.

LAST YEAR’S RACE
Winner: DRAGON LEADER
Trainer: Clive Cox
Jockey: Ryan Moore
Age/Weight: 2-9-2
Runners: 22 SP: 7/2JF
After breaking well from the stalls, Dragon Leader led down the far-side, travelling strongly on the front end. He didn’t look the most straight forward under pressure but found plenty to storm clear and land the Goffs pot.
RACE FACTS & STATISTICS
THE TALE OF THE CLOCK
Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 10s
Course Record: 1m 8.90s by Tiggy Wiggy (21-Aug-14)
All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years
Leading course trainer (14-19): Leading course trainer (19-24): K Ryan (26 wins from 303 runners, 9%) runs AGAINST THE WIND, AMERICAN STYLE, TERRITORIAL KNIGHT & JORGE ALVARES
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): A Balding (8 wins from 57 runners, 14%) runs
Fancy That: R Hannon won this race in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2022. The stable runs AN OUTLAW’S GRACE today. Longest Traveller: ARIZONA BLAZE trained by A Murray, Ireland.
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 20th August.
KNAVESMIRE TIP
Maw Lam has made the frame at Group and Listed level in two of her last three outings and that level of performance gives her every chance of taking this valuable prize. However, the vote goes to ARIZONA BLAZE, who arguably brings the best form to the contest after finishing third in a strong renewal of the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh earlier in the month. Adrian Murray’s juvenile has plenty of experience under his belt and could put that to good use. Territorial Knight and Against The Wind are others to keep an eye on.

RACE DESCRIPTION
A competitive heritage handicap for 3yo+ horses, run over a mile.
Distance: 1m
Race Type: Heritage Handicap
Prize Money: £150,000
Age: 3+
Stalls: Inside Rail
Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best in past performance will be the highest rated, Dear My Friend, and so will carry more weight.
Look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) For example, Blue For You is a regular winner at York over this trip

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Thunder Run was a beaten favourite when third on his handicap debut at Thirsk earlier in the month, but remains unexposed and is likely to have plenty more to offer. However, the vote goes to the in-form ELNAJMM, who continues to go from strength to strength after scoring at Ascot last month and has proved a different proposition since being gelded last year. William Haggas’ four-year-old could continue his rapid progression and go in again, while New Image and James McHenry can fight it out for the minor honours.

RESULT & PRIZE MONEY INFORMATION
THIRD RACE PRESENTATION & BEST TURNED OUT
The trophy for this race will be presented to the winning owner after the race by a representative of Clipper.
Clipper have generously given £100 to the racing groom responsible for the best turned out horse in this race and £50 to the racing groom responsible for the winning horse
The York Race Committee wishes to offer special thanks to the Trustees of the British European Breeder’s Fund for their generous support of 22 races, spread across the seventeen-day York season.
NOT A FINAL TOTAL… SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRIES WHEN IS A T TAL PRIZE FUND
The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses.
The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula. However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%. You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard.
The prize money on offer at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week. It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners – sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”.
For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold.
For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks closed for original entries on June 25th.
However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance. The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by
the owners. If you think about it terms of playing poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium.
In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks has risen because of one supplementary entry, with Content joining the field.
Connections of Content have decided that their filly seems to keep looking better the further she runs. A strong finish in the Group One Juddmonte Irish Oaks, over two furlongs shorter, came after original entries would have closed for today’s race, so you can understand the thinking
The other entrants at the same stage had paid £6,250 each, so this sum is transferred to the original pot of £500,000. The balance is then added to create a total prize fund of £533,750.

GLOBAL TARGETS AWAIT...
The field in the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks demonstrate the global nature of top class flat racing competition. To further encourage this competition, various famous racing associations around the world have offered attractive incentives to the winner.
The QIPCO British Champions Series takes place over several racedays, comprising five championship categories. Each features the seven highest-rated races in that category, including today’s Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks - the final Fillies & Mares race before QIPCO British Champions Day, Britain’s richest raceday with £4 million in prize money on Saturday 19th October.
Breeders’ Cup Ltd have offered an attractive incentive to the winner as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. The successful horse this afternoon, if nominated with Breeders’ Cup, will receive both free entry and a guaranteed start gate in the one mile and four furlongs $2m Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf to be run at Del Mar in California on Saturday November 2nd. Combined with a travel allowance of $40,000 this is a bonus to US bound connections. It is one of only nine UK races to have been provided with this bonus.
The field in the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks demonstrate the global nature of top class flat racing competition. To further encourage this competition the Japanese Racing Association have offered an attractive incentive to the winner If the successful filly or mare this afternoon also wins the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on Sunday 24th November then connections will qualify for a special bonus valued at $700,000 in addition to their share of £1.8m pot.

A BRIEF HISTORY?
MULTIPLE WINNERS?
Obviously before 1971 there couldn’t have been as the race was only open to three-year-old fillies. But since then Only Royale (1993 & 1994) and Islington (2002 & 2003) have both secured back-to-back victories, while Enable won the race as both a three and five-year-old in 2017 and 2019 respectively.
The race was established in 1849, when it was originally restricted to fillies aged three When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks was classed at Group 1 levelthe highest grade of race The race was opened up to older fillies and mares in 1991.
ISN’T THE OAKS RUN AT EPSOM?
The name ‘Oaks’ tends to lend its name to all top class races for fillies. The Yorkshire Oaks often features fillies which previously ran in the Oaks at Epsom. The first to achieve victory in both races was Brown Duchess in 1861, and the most recent was Snowfall in 2021.
Alexandrova
FIRST WINNER?
The inaugural running in 1849 was won by Ellen Middleton, owned by the 2nd Earl of Zetland. However, the first winner of the race as we know it now was Magnificent Star in 1991.
IRISH RAIDERS?
Since the early ‘70s fillies trained in Ireland have had their fair share of success Paddy Prendergast won with Sarah Siddons in 1976 before Jim Bolger added another with Condessa in 1981. After a barren spell, John Oxx added further success with Key Change in 1996 before Aidan O’Brien secured back-to-back victories with Alexandrova & Peeping Fawn in 2006-2007. Jim Bolger made it an Irish hat-trick with Lush Lashes in 2008 and Aidan O’Brien added his third victory with Tapestry in 2014. Recent Irish domination continued in 2015 with victory for Jim Bolger’s Pleascach and Aidan O’Brien almost saddled the 1-2 in 2016 with the brilliant pair of Seventh Heaven and Found. Thereafter, Love, Snowfall and 2023 winner Warm Heart gave him his fifth, sixth and seventh victories. Lush Lashes
LEADING TRAINERS?
The 19th century trainer Matthew Dawson shares top spot with Sir Michael Stoute with nine winners each. Aidan O’Brien recorded another winner last year, as Warm Heart took him to seven wins in the race She joined recent winners Love and Snowfall. So, no pressure on Content and Port Fairy today.
LEADING RIDER?
The legendary Fred Archer holds the record having won this race on 8 occasions. Of those jockeys around today, Ryan Moore leads the way with three winners, the first of which came back in 2014, courtesy of Tapestry
SING WHEN YOU’RE
WINNING!
Lord Lloyd-Webber has won the Pertemps Yorkshire Oaks twice. First with Dar Re Mi in 2009 and again with The Fugue in 2013.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Pertemps Recruitment Partnership provide recruitment and staffing solutions to clients in the private and public sectors. They provide temporary, permanent and contract jobs to candidates.
EUROPEAN RAIDERS?
Italian Valfredo Valiani landed the honours in 2001 with Super Tassa. Frenchman Alain de Royer-Dupré added further international flavour when Shareta stormed to victory in 2012. The Irish tricolour is flown for Europe today.

PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS
Year Winner Trainer Jockey
2023 Warm Heart Aidan O'Brien James Doyle
AGE
Three-year-olds would appear to be the age group to concentrate on as they have won 20 of the 32 renewals since the race was opened up to older fillies in 1991. The victory of Snowfall in 2021 saw them keep their advantage over their older rivals. Alpinista became only the second five-year-old to win the race in the last 20 years, the other being Enable. So it takes a special horse to do it! With that said, Emily Upjohn has big hooves to follow.
TRAINERS
Aidan O’Brien has seven wins in the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks, he has a strong hand again this year with Port Fairy and Content.
RECENT FORM
Whilst seven of the last twelve winners arrived here on the back of a win, three fillies had finished second, which confirms the fact that a filly needs to be at the top of her game coming into the race. Taking the recent form angle a little further we see that all of the last ten winners had contested a Group 1 on their last start showing that you need to be a top-class performer to go close.
CONCLUSION
KEY RACES
With three-year-olds holding sway it isn’t surprising that the Epsom Oaks has provided a number of winners of this race. Alexandrova, 2017’s winner Enable, 2020 champion, Love and 2021 superstar Snowfall have completed the double in recent years. The Juddmonte Irish Oaks also stands up well, probably as there are only five weeks between the two races making it much easier for a trainer to keep his filly in tip-top condition. 9 of the last 21 Irish Oaks winners made their way to the Knavesmire, with Snowfall becoming the eighth to record the double.
BETTING
Those towards the head of the betting are more often than not the group to focus on. Six of the previous seven winners were sent off favourite and of those seven, four were odds on Only three horses have won at over 100/30, those being Pleascach in 2015, Tapestry a year earlier and the biggest-priced winner came last year when Warm Heart won at 9/1.
KEY TRENDS
Focus on the three-year-olds
Top two finish last time
Ran at Epsom or The Curragh
Favourite
Emily Upjohn bids to follow in the footsteps of Alpinista and Enable by defying the five-year-old trend. She no doubt has the experience to aid her case but must give 9lb to the new kids on the block which makes her opposable. The Ballydoyle filly CONTENT went mightily close to landing the Juddmonte Irish Oaks but was run down late by rival again today You Got To Me. She was having her first run upped in trip at the Curragh and is sure to take another step forward today, with Ryan Moore back in the saddle. Three-year-olds have a terrific record in the race and when you couple that with the record of Aidan O'Brien, it could well be the winning combination. Stablemate Port Fairy was well beaten in that race and it's hard to see her get competitive again. Although Queen Of The Pride takes another step up in Grade, fillies towards the top of the market are one to keep an eye on so she is of obvious interest, also.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Three-year-olds have won eight of the last 10 renewals of this prestigious fillies and mares showpiece and, having been responsible for five of those heroines, Aidan O’Brien’s trusted formula for success has been formidable Content and Port Fairy are two high-class contenders for O’Brien this time around, with the former readily suggested as the Ballydoyle flag-bearer However, both were outgunned by YOU GOT TO ME in the Irish Oaks last month and it is the Ralph Beckett-trained filly who appeals most from the Classic generation. The rapidly improving Queen Of The Pride has the younger legs and shades the stoic Emily Upjohn as the main contender for the Gosdens on this occasion.

A TRIBUTE TO SIR HENRY CECIL
JOHN SEXTON REFLECTS ON ONE OF THE GREATS
It seems barely credible that eleven years have passed since the racing world lost one of its true giants with the passing of trainer, Sir Henry Cecil, who is remembered today with the ninth running of the EBF and Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes.
Throughout his 44-year career, the Sky Bet Ebor Festival always played a significant role in Sir Henry’s plans each season and Warren Place winners abounded on the Knavesmire each August, including three in the race which now bears his name.
It was not until 1986 that Sir Henry broke his duck in the EBF Galtres Stakes with Startino, but a second winner quickly followed when Upend, owned and bred by the former Newmarket chairman Peter Player, beat the favourite Percy’s Lass by a rather cosy half-length.
Sir Henry’s third and final winner of the EBF Galtres Stakes was Eva Luna, who had the advantage of a trademark ride from Pat Eddery, another legend racing has lost all too soon, as they out battled Sir Michael Stoute’s Time Allowed, himself under a great ride from John Reid.
As with many of his top horses, Eva Luna was owned and bred by the late Prince Khalid Abdullah, the filly did not make her racecourse debut until she was four and was having only the second race of her career that day. In a nomenclature quirk, she was one of two fillies to be named
Eva Luna foaled in 1992 – the other was trained by Jim Bolger retired after her classic campaign.
Those three Galtres triumphs, like all his Knavesmire winners, were a source of deep satisfaction on a racecourse he loved, in a county that was very dear to his heart.
Few would dispute that Sir Henry Cecil was the greatest British trainer of the 20th Century. Twenty-five British Classics, six more in Ireland, seventy-five Royal Ascot winners, the first man to saddle 3,000 winners on the Flat in Britain and the first British trainer to win the French Derby, all testify to his brilliance.
He learned his trade from two masters, growing up first as the step-son of Royal trainer Captain Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and then as son-in-law of Sir Noel Murless, the outstanding British-based trainer of the 1960’s. They were hard acts to follow, but Sir Henry was to add that magical and indefinable quality which took him from very good to brilliant. It could have been the patience and attention to detail that he learnt tending his rose garden or simply that his natural ease and relaxed demeanour transmitted to his horses.
Midday, carrying the Juddmonte colours, becomes Sir Henry’s fifth Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks winner
Sir Henry & Lady Cecil enjoy a quieter moment
Whatever the reason, Cecil’s innate ability, coupled with the quality of horse he could attract to Warren Place, his base from 1977, meant his runners dominated the championship races. From Royal Ascot to York; from Newmarket to Goodwood, Cecil ruled supreme.
Like Alec Taylor in the early part of the 20th Century, Cecil’s was not a betting yard, but very much a yard to bet on, making him the trainer of choice with punters up and down the land.
In the golden summer of 1987, Cecil won one of his ten Trainers’ Championships with 180 winners, an unheard of tally in those days before Sunday fixtures and all-weather racing expanded the programme book. It was achieved between March and November and with barely a handicap winner among them.
So many of his horses were pattern race standard that a Cecil runner in a handicap was treated like the Holy Grail by punters. That was why much excitement surrounded the appearance of the Cecil-trained Kneller in the Sky Bet Ebor of 1988. With an Eddery aboard again, this time Paul not Pat, a 9-1 win resulted, a handy return for a horse whose next two races were victories in the Doncaster and the Jockey Club Cups!
But then, York was always good to Sir Henry, just as he was always good to York. He loved the Knavesmire for its fairness. He mingled freely with racegoers and always seemed to have time to talk despite amassing some 137 winners at the track.
Congratulate him on a winner and almost inevitably he would turn, cock his head to one side in his trademark pose and ask what you thought of the horse and the race. More importantly, he would then listen attentively to the answer.
And there were many chances for congratulation at York. His seven winners in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante still stands as a record for the race as does his nine victories in the Tattersalls Musidora.
It was always said that he was better with fillies than colts, which may be more a relative than an absolute assessment, given his total of eighteen 1000 Guineas and Oaks winners is double that of his nine 2000 Guineas and Derby champions.
His York winners seem to support the point, with one of his seven Dante winners, the 1987 hero Reference Point winning the Betfred Derby, while three
of the Musidora stars, Diminuendo, Snow Bride and Reams of Verse added an Oaks.
Consider five winners of the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks, spanning the decades from Connaught Bridge in 1979 to Midday in 2010 and it seems the case is proven. But there is more to weigh. Add into the big race mix, four winners of the Juddmonte International spread over nearly forty years from Wollow in 1976 to Frankel in 2012, plus four more colts in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur, as well as a couple of Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack triumphs and you get a taste of what the Knavesmire meant to Sir Henry, prizes to be aimed for, regardless of the gender of the thoroughbred.
Celestial Cloud set the ball rolling at Ripon in May 1969, the first of 3,431 worldwide victories His last winner here was First Mohican, the opening victor of York’s 2013 season. He started favourite, of course, making it apt that Sir Henry’s first and last winners were in his beloved Yorkshire. His last runner at York was Ace of Valhalla just two weeks before his passing.
Those names will probably drift into obscurity with the passing of the years, unlike that of Frankel, whose truly astounding win in the 2012 Juddmonte International is indelibly imprinted in the minds of all who saw it. Knighted for services to the sport in 2011, it was fitting that Sir Henry Cecil’s last big race win at York should be with Frankel. Was he the greatest horse who ever raced? Very possibly. Hugely impressive though Mark Johnston’s record haul truly is, was Sir Henry Cecil the greatest British trainer of all time? Quite probably. Both legendary horse and trainer now have permanent markers in their honour at York with a life size statue and a set of wrought iron gates respectively. It is little wonder then that the spontaneous appeal for “three cheers for Sir ‘enry” was greeted so rapturously around the Winner’s Enclosure that August; he may have loved York, but York also loved him.
Frankel with winning owner Prince Khalid Abdullah and Sir Henry Cecil - both men, much missed
TOP JOCKEY AT YORK
The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the acclaimed Living North Trophy, as well as £2,500, to celebrate their achievement
The Lion In Winter broke the course record for juveniles over seven furlongs when completing the first leg of an emphatic treble for Ryan Moore. Moving him joint top of the standings.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
William Haggas won this race in 2013, 2014 and again last year, which all bodes well for the progressive SEA JUST IN TIME, who is capable of making a big impression now she steps back up in class. The holder of a couple of Group 1 entries, the daughter of Sea The Stars appears to have an outstanding chance here. Nakheel was two places ahead of the selection when third at Goodwood in June but failed to build on that at Newmarket last time With that in mind, Karmology may pose a bigger threat given her course record

AGE OF GOLD scored in the style of a smart prospect over 6f at Yarmouth on his debut in May, prior to finishing seventh in the Chesham at Royal Ascot. Original Outlaw looked likely to score before being caught by his stablemate when second in a similar event at Goodwood three weeks ago, and he can emerge as the main danger upped 6lb Dividend and Seagolazo are others for the shortlist. On Ladies Day a final all-female competitive handicap, again for 3yo and older, this time over seven furlongs.
The £100,000 prize money as well as the handicap rating band of 0-105 means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for Test cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). The horse considered by the handicapper as the best will carry the most weight; Nine Tenths, today.
It may a be a little late to discover him, perhaps follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane
He could provide you with a last gasp winner so that you can bask in your success until at least 1.52pm tomorrow

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Alfa Kellenic has been in great form this year and she must be on the shortlist once again. That said, ELIM gets the vote as she was an excellent third over a mile in a Pontefract Listed race last month, just giving way in the closing stages and this step back to 7f could be right up her street. Although a mark of 92 is tough enough, she may well be capable of defying it here. Key To Cotai was forced to endure a luckless passage when fourth over 7f at Haydock recently and she merits respect off an unchanged mark.
