A very warm welcome to the Sky Bet Ebor Festival 2024 and the flagship race of our season – the Group 1 Juddmonte International. Today is the richest raceday and race we have ever hosted with well over at over £2m in prize money of offer today including a record £1.25m for the feature, with all the other six races are worth at least £100,000. This record investment in prize money has been rewarded with some wonderful horses from around the planet and the world’s best jockeys, we are incredibly appreciative that their connections have decided to bring them to the Knavesmire for us all to enjoy and even try to pick out a winner.
For over thirty seasons now, our showpiece has been supported by Juddmonte, and we remain hugely appreciative of their backing and wish their own horses on the track and the progeny of their wonderful stallions the very best of fortune Was it really a dozen years ago that Frankel blitzed up the Knavesmire? This year’s renewal looks to be fascinating with a clash of generations, distances, continents, sexes and racing powerhouses. Between them the 13 contenders have amassed 26 Group One/ Pattern race victories. Carrying the Classic winning torch after his Derby victory is City of Troy, currently the highest rated colt on turf in the world, a horse seeking his third consecutive Group 1 victory, in Coolmore colours. A competitive set of three-year-olds also includes Calandagan who won the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, sometimes called the “Ascot Derby”, in the famous silks of the Aga Khan. As often, a clash of the generations awaits, the classic crop face Alflaila, a two-time winner of the Group Two Sky Bet York Stakes, over course & distance. International by name and this year by nature, as French and Irish contenders are joined by a Japanese star thoroughbred, Durezza. A winner of the Group One Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) last October, a European debut is eagerly awaited by the enthusiastic Carrot Farm syndicate who we welcome to the Knavesmire to support him. This really could be the race of the year!
Marvellous though our feature race is, the rest of the card is also dripping with quality
The Group Two Sky Bet Great Voltigeur features another Derby winner, Los Angeles who triumphed at The Curragh, will he follow stable mate Continuous (last year’s winner) who became the 15th colt to achieve the Knavesmire-Town Moor double, when winning the St Leger
Every race this week will tell a story; the opening Symphony Group Stakes field of 22 over the unusual distance of five and a half furlongs sees Copper Knight bidding to add to his already record number of seven wins at York.
The Tattersalls Acomb is the richest Group 3 juvenile race in Britain, for the first time there have been no restrictions to entry which has contributed to a field of 11. Also, a first, the winner qualifies for a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar in November, as it becomes part of the “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series.
The richest nursery handicap in the land, one of 13 contests this week to be backed by the headline sponsor of the Festival, Sky Bet, concludes today’s card. It will continue a pattern in the annual joust between bookie and Knavesmire regular, that will culminate in Saturday’s £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor
We have some top class racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors.
The “World Pool Moment of the Day”, is an initiative that sees an expert panel select a highlight on each of the three weekdays The member of racing staff from the yard who looks after the horse awarded “World Pool Moment of the Day” will win £4,000 The winner will also be in with a chance of winning “World Pool Moment of the Year” which will be determined by a combination of scores derived from a public vote and a global expert panel and announced at the Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin in December. The lucky winner will win a VIP trip for four to Hong Kong for either the 2025 Hong Kong Derby or 2025 Champions Day.
In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the Grantley Hall Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room. Partners such as Grantley Hall themselves, The 8th Sign and the Hole in Wand are offering great prizes for all you stylish racegoers, plus it is great fun!
A moment of reflection before we enjoy the sporting treats, last week the racing world lost one its finest journalists, who was a proud Yorkshireman and great friend to all at York Racecourse
Visit our equine ambassador, Goldream, the retired racehorse in Clocktower Enclosure, while you are there try the “jockey gym”, listen out for the Shepherd Group Brass Band, dance into the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Gardet Origine champagne for just £43 a bottle, enjoy the 360-selfie camera or taking your own selfie at the flower wall; whatever, it is just our pleasure to welcome you and hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.
Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.
Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples.
THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:
• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings.
• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.
If you are here on Saturday, please join us for the Official Opening at 1pm.
We hope you enjoy it.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse. co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

COPPER KNIGHT: WINNING-MOST HORSE HERE
EYES ON OUR FIRST RACE WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER EIGHT.
The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his seven races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come. He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb seventh victory came back in July.
A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet! Last July Copper Knight made history by registering another win on the Knavesmire. He remains a stalwart of Tim Easterby’s operation, with a record breaking seven wins. Will Copper Knight continue to make history with an eighth win today on his 30th run at York?

The first of seven races with at least a six-figure purse today, it is a competitive heritage handicap for 3yo+ horses, run over the unusual trip of five and a half furlongs.
Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated, and so will carry the most weight – Democracy Dilemma carries the top weight today.
Listen to the Punters Panel from 1pm to hear the expert’s view.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
PILGRIM has gone from strength to strength this season and, given a rest since landing the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Handicap at Royal Ascot, the son of Havana Grey should be primed for this assignment off an 8lb higher mark. The fact he has won here before is another plus. Goodwood scorer Shagraan and classy top-weight Democracy Dilemma feature on a long list of dangers, while Holkham Bay ran out a comfortable winner at the Shergar Cup meeting and must enter calculations. Last year’s third Jm Jungle and Silky Wilkie are just two more to consider

MAGICAL MEMORIES: ROBERTO AND FRANKEL
It was in 1972 that an idea that had been some years in the making became reality - a Group 1 race joined the then three-day Ebor Festival with the first running of the International, over a mile and a quarter, designed to attract the best of the classic generation and the best of the older brigade.
If the York organisers were looking for a vote of confidence for their new idea, they more than got it, as the inaugural running produced a field of dreams.
Brigadier Gerard was unbeaten at that stage in 15 races and the four-year-old lined up as hot favourite against the first two home in the Derby- the winner Roberto being ridden by the Panamanian Braulio Baeza after the late Lester Piggott who rode him at Epsom, decided to ride the runner up Rheingold that day.
The stands were packed but the script wasn’t read by the entire

Brigadier Gerard
cast. Roberto set off in front and although Brigadier Gerard gave chase, Joe Mercer accepted the inevitable in the final furlong.
The crowd were shocked, but in hindsight the Brigadier’s failure by 3 lengths to give weight to a Derby winner, when the first two both broke the course record may not have been the disaster some portrayed.
York’s new race made the headlines and has continued to do so.
To the wider world, Wednesday 22nd August 2012 was just another day, but to the record opening day crowd packed into the Knavesmire it was to be anything but with the 127 seconds at its heart, it is remembered clearly over a decade later.
There was even an extra buzz at Kings Cross station that morning catching one of the early East Coast Expresses. The Guards on the train even mentioned a certain Frankel as we made our final approach to York Station.
It was to be Frankel’s 13th race - a perfect dozen won. But this Juddmonte International was different.
Could he dispatch fresh rivals with similar disdain, over 1 mile 2 furlongs and 88 yards as he had over a mile?
His owner, the much-missed Prince Khalid Abdulla was in town and, despite the desperate signs of his illness so was trainer, Sir Henry Cecil.
Those front row views of the pre parade have never filled so earlyit was an extraordinary sight.
Frankel faced a surprisingly large number of rivals as a field of nine went to post, the biggest challengers being St Nicholas Abbey, who had finished third in the King George at Ascot after winning the Coronation Cup at Epsom - one of three challengers from Ballydoyle, while two other stable mates of Frankel- his regular companion Bullet Train and Twice Over- who had won the race the previous year.
And there was Godolphin’s Farhh, whose rider Frankie Dettori observed wistfully “I’m sick of seeing the horse’s ar*e.
A few applauded as Frankel went to post, and a few gasped as the great horse missed the break and was settled in the rear by jockey Tom Queally as Bullet Train cut out the early running.
Turning for home, the crowd silence told its own story.
The hero remained near last; then Queally made his move down the
stands side- the race was over with a furlong to go- Frankel won by 7 lengths. No one moved as Queally brought the Champion in front of the stands.
And so to the Winners Enclosure - emotion almost tangible as the trainer removed his black fedora and walked forward to receive his prize as the call for “three cheers for ‘enry” was deafeningly responded to. Lord Grimthorpe, Frankel’s Racing Manager in his first season in his “other job” as York Chairman so was on hand when the Prince raised the trophy.
Speaking later, Teddy Grimthorpe joked when asked about Cecil’s health- ‘He’s in good spirits and devouring lobster’.
So, whether fifty years or a mere decade have slipped by, the memories of great champions remain fresh. It was a day, now over a decade ago that still lives in the memory. Not just the race, but what happened afterwards.
History repeating itself, in an interview reflecting on great racedays, a leading Newmarket Trainer said of August 2012 ‘The reception Sir Henry got that day is why I am such a proud Yorkshireman’
That trainer? William Haggas- who incidentally won in 2022 with another superstar, Baaeed.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
RULING COURT made as impressive a debut as any two-year-old this season when scoring at Sandown and the expensive son of Justify will have plenty more improvement forthcoming. He can land a first win in this contest for trainer Charlie Appleby en route to some loftier targets down the line. The penny dropped late on for The Lion In Winter, but he still comfortably saw off his rivals at the Curragh and appears the main danger to the selection. Taking Redcar winner Diablo Rojo is worth his place in the line-up, while Our Terms made all over 6f at Ascot and is another to consider

A WINTER’S TALE:
WHAT IS NEW THIS YEAR?
A LOT OF WORK HAS GONE INTO THE BUSTARDTHORPE END DEVELOPMENT (SEE P20-21), HOWEVER THE RACECOURSE TEAMS HAVE BEEN BUSY ELSEWHERE…..
WINE & CHEESE BAR
EDWARDIAN WEIGHING ROOM
Since 2015, this one-time hub of the racing operation has been a popular destination for racegoers who want to combine a little nostalgia with their drinks. This winter, a Wine & Cheese Bar has been added. Speaking about the new treats, the head of our food operation, Kevin Pinnington said: “People were always telling me how much they liked the old wine & cheese cellar, then doing our stock take, I realised we had some really lovely wines that were effectively bin-ends because we didn’t have enough bottles to offer them on the main wine list. So, this new bar is a bit of a “back to the future” as it’s a way to let County Stand badgeholders try them by the glass, combined with some traditional favourites. Add in a selection of carefully chosen Yorkshire cheeses plus some cold meats and we hope people will enjoy it.”

STAND
The high class action on the track is clearly seen from the steppings and boxes of this stand, however the PA system was showing its age. A major investment should mean that the commentators can now better add to the drama and let you know what price your winning bets were returned at As with any new technology, it might take a few meetings to settle in, so please help us by sharing your experience with the team on the ground.
ALCOVES BAR
GIMCRACK STAND
Another County Stand area, that once discovered is much loved, has benefited from a winter refurbishment. Lighter and brighter, check out the extended range of Tanqueray gins, offered with premium Schweppes tonics.
MULTIPLE BARS
The new Bar in the Roberto Pavilion should speed up drinks service in that area but we’ve also added even more fast tills, there are nearly 250 around the site. Not to mention thirty new under the bar fridges.
OUT OF SIGHT:
Every winter a whole host of “out of sight work” is completed. The investment in these infrastructure projects keeps the racecourse functioning on the busy days This year the pumps in the Ebor Stand were replaced and drainage works undertaken outside the Gimcrack Stand.
About a mile from the track is the working home of Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty A regular winner of Yorkshire in Bloom Awards, the Victorian Greenhouse has benefited from major refurbishment.
GreatVoltigeurStakes FACT FILE:
WHERE DOES THE RACE NAME COME FROM?
Voltigeur was a famous Yorkshire-trained Classic winner who carried the colours of the Earl of Zetland, to victory in both the Derby at Epsom and the St Leger in 1850 The Flying Dutchman had also landed the Derby-St Leger double the previous year The so called “Great Match” between the pair was held at York the following spring, over two miles with £1,000 side stakes (a sum equivalent to £700,000 in today’s shops) and the Knavesmire was packed to bursting to see the Flying Dutchman win the money. Yet, in one of those quirks of history the battling Voltigeur won the hearts on the day and he is now remembered with this race, the 550 seat restaurant at York as well as being the horse featured in our logo
Distance
One mile and four furlongs (2,400 metres)
Prize money £267,500 (inc supplementary)
WHY IS IT AN IMPORTANT RACE?
It has long been the premier trial for the final Classic of the year and in five decades or more, the road to The Betfred St Leger fame has often started here on the Knavesmire. Continuous became the latest winner to achieve glory on Doncaster’s Town Moor, he became the 15th Great Voltigeur winner to do just that.
FIRST WINNER?
The Jack Jarvis-trained Castle Rock won the inaugural race in 1950 when ridden by Bill Rickaby.
ANY OTHER SUCCESSES?
In 2009 Mastery finished runner-up to Monitor Closely but reversed the placings in the Betfred St Leger Three year’s later Encke could only finish third here, but he broke the hearts of the racing public when he defeated the Triple Crown-seeking Camelot at Doncaster. It was a similar story in 2018 as the York third, Kew Gardens, turned the tables on Old Persian in the season’s final classic.
GLORY DOWN UNDER
The Charlie Appleby-trained Cross Counter was second in this back in 2018. Some ten weeks and 10,500 miles later and the colt carried the Godolphin colours to triumph in the Lexus Melbourne Cup So becoming the first Britishtrained winner of the race that stops a nation. 2022 winner, Deauville Legend, started as favourite at Flemington, however could not emulate the feat.
A ROYAL HICCUP...
Alleged is arguably the best Sky Bet Great Voltigeur winner not to go on to score at Doncaster. Trained by Vincent O’Brien, he went to Doncaster unbeaten in five starts and was sent off a red hot favourite, but he was beaten by Dunfermline – owned by The Late HM The Queen and ridden by Willie Carson. That was Alleged’s only defeat and he later took his revenge in the Arc in Paris, a prize he also won the following year
OTHER CLASSIC HEROES?
Before Logician and Continuousness’s success, Premonition won the new York race in 1953, and became the first to go on to triumph in the Betfred St Leger He was trained by Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and ridden by Harry Carr and they did it again five years later with Alcide St Paddy, Hethersett, Ragusa and Indiana all did the double in a five year period during the 1960s, while Athens Wood and Bustino added to the score in the following decade. The mighty Reference Point took the Betfred Derby as well as these two races in his fantastic career Rule of Law carried the Godolphin blue to double victory in 2004 and Lucarno was another to do the double in 2007.
LEADING TRAINERS?
Paddy Prendergast saddled five winners in the early years of the race, while the late Sir Henry Cecil was successful on four occasions. These totals have been surpassed by Sir Michael Stoute - having won it seven times in his career including with Telescope in 2013. John Gosden also has a terrific record in the race, winning five of the last fifteen renewals, including that of 2019 Aidan O’Brien, made it four wins in the past 19 years, with Continuous. He joined the likes of Idaho, who did the business in 2016 before unseating in incredibly unlucky fashion in the Betfred St Leger, while Kew Gardens took an eye-catching third here before winning the Doncaster Classic. Los Angeles, Euphoric and Illinois go in search of giving Ballydoyle a fifth win in the race
LEADING RIDER?
On an afternoon when racegoers can once again take a selfie with the statue of the “Long Fellow”, it is worth noting that the much missed Lester Piggott won the race on no less than nine occasions, while Frankie Dettori bowed out of British racing on seven victories. Of the current crop, both Ryan Moore and James Doyle have ridden two winners to date, the former rides Los Angeles while James Doyle is given the leg up on Space Legend.

HOW DO LOCAL TRAINERS FARE?
Brioche was the first Yorkshiretrained winner when saddled for victory by Malton-based Captain Charles Elsey in 1957. But it was 45 years before we saw another Yorkshire horse score when Mark Johnston collected the prize with subsequent St Leger third, Bandari. Yorkshire born William Haggas is the closest the White Rose has to a runner, Space Legend represents Sommerville Lodge today.

WHEN IS A T TAL PRIZE FUND
NOT A FINAL TOTAL… SUPPLEMENTARY
ENTRIES
The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses.
The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula. However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%. You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard.
The prize money on offer at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week. It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners – sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”.
For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold.
For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur closed for original entries on July 2nd.
However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance. The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by the owners. If you think about it terms of playing poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium.
In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur has risen because of one supplementary entry, with Los Angeles joining the field.
Connections of Los Angeles have decided that their Irish Derby winner might be best suited at the longer end of the distance spectrum. Following that victory over a mile and a half at The Curragh, the colt will once again try to replicate that victory over the same distance today. Already priced at 7/2 by the sponsor for the final classic of the season which runs over this distance, you can see there are plenty of others interested in the decision.
The other entrants at the same stage had paid £2,500 each, so this sum is transferred to the original pot of £250,000. The balance is then added to create a total prize fund of £267,500.
Original prize fund: £250,000 Supplementary entry fee: £20,000 (Deducted as if it were an original entry) (£2,500) Leaves a balance of £17,500
Final total prize fund: £267,500

TRAINERS
With Sir Michael Stoute not represented in the race this year. We instead focus on Aidan O’Brien, who has four victories, including two in the last ten years. William Haggas also won the race back in 2016, so could get his second win today.
BETTING
Four of the last 10 to win the race were favourites, with only one horse winning at double figure odds in that time frame. There is a slight bias toward those at the front of the market. Therefore pay close attention to Los Angeles and King's Gambit.
RECENT FORM
A last time out victory is not the be all and end all when looking for that elusive winner as only two of the last twelve winners of this race have arrived here on the back of a success last time out. However, a solid run on their latest start offers some encouragement with all but three of the last ten winners having finished no worse than fourth on their most recent outing.
DISTANCE
Previously it had been the case that winning over 1m4f prior to the race hadn't been important That has begun to change with Old Persian, Logician, Pyledriver, Yibir and Deauville Legend all previously winning over the trip. Therefore it could well pay to follow those with experience, last year's winner Continuous bucked this trend, with his only win coming over a mile prior to his wining run. King's Gambit tries 1m 4f for the first time today.
WEIGHT
Every horse is initially allotted 9st 2lb (8st 12lb until 2014) before penalties are given for previous wins at Group 1 or Group 2 level this season. Only three winners of the race have carried such penalties to victory since 1995. Illinois gives 3lb away for his Group 2 win at Royal Ascot, while Los Angeles gives away 5lb for his Irish Derby win.
KEY TRENDS
Finished in first four last time Single-figure odds
Win over 1m4f
CONCLUSION
With the record of penalty carriers being so poor, it might be best to look away from market principle Los Angeles. There is no denying he was very impressive when winning the Irish Derby but would have to be special to win this under a penalty, even though he does have Ryan Moore in the saddle. Illinois looked a real stayer for Ballydoyle when out battling Highbury in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot. His assured stamina ought to stand him in good stead but his form doesn't read as well as a couple of his rivals. KING'S GAMBIT has been beaten narrowly in his last two starts but the step up to 1m 4f, could bring about the winning improvement, just as it did for Continuous 12 months ago. The form of his second in the Group Two Sky Bet York Stakes, is top class and his lack of a penalty makes him an appealing proposition.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
With three in the field, including Queen’s Vase scorer Illinois, Aidan O’Brien is likely to make this a test of stamina that would suit Los Angeles. The Irish Derby winner has a 5lb penalty to carry, which will certainly make life tougher, and it may pay to side with KING’S GAMBIT. The improving Saxon Warrior colt was runner-up in a very strong renewal of the York Stakes here last month and has looked like a Group 1 performer in the making. It may be that the step up to 1m4f brings out the best in him.

Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York.
The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough. The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree.
Coming up to date and Juddmonte Farms, sponsors of today’s feature race continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Established in 1977, Juddmonte Farms was set up by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah, who sadly passed in 2021.
On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. It is easy to appreciate how the offspring of great horses such as Frankel will feel a weight of expectation on their withers The colt formerly trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil enjoyed his finest hour at York when landing the Juddmonte International for his connections in 2012 to take his unbeaten record to thirteen. Frankel’s stallion career continues to go from strength to strength, the fastest sire to a century of Group winners in history, in 2023 he was responsible for 42 individual stakes winners and eleven Group One winners, more than any other Northern Hemisphere-based stallion. In total he has sired 34 Group One winners.
Based at Banstead Manor, the success of this operation can be seen with Oasis Dream, a Champion at both two and three. His three Group 1 victories included a devastating turn of foot in the 2003 Coolmore Nunthorpe where he made all, quickening close home to win by two and a half lengths. In
the breeding shed he has also enjoyed plenty of success, including 2022 2000 Guineas winner Native Trail amongst the winners of 30 Group One races.
The most famous of his offspring is probably classy filly Midday who landed six top-level victories during her career, including two notable successes here on the Knavesmire - the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaksas well as being narrowly denied in the Juddmonte International by stablemate Twice Over. Another of Oasis Dream’s sons, Muhaarar, continued the York connection. The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack winner subsequently added four Group 1s in 2015, en-route to being crowned Cartier Champion Sprinter and is now producing his own speedy sons and daughters.
Another smash hit in the bloodstock world has been Juddmonte’s exceptional miler, Kingman - a winner of seven of his eight starts, including four Group 1 victories, the son of Invincible Spirit has already produced 52 Group winners and a further 32 Stakes winners. They include Kinross, Palace Pier, Calyx, Headman, Commissioning, Domestic Spending, 2024 1000 Guineas winner Elmaka and Prix de Diane winner Sparkling Plenty amongst many others who are only just starting out their racing careers - it’s almost certain that Kingman will be known as one of the truly great sires in years to come.
What is evident is the strength in depth that Juddmonte possess. The quality for Frankel, Oasis Dream, Kingman and latest roster hits, Chaldean and Elite Power, coupled with the passion and knowledge passed down from the organisation’s much-missed founder, they look set to be sat at the top table for a few generations yet.

The Juddmonte International FACT FILE:
WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN?
RECORD TIME?
The record time came in 2009 when Sea The Stars completed the 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 88 yards (2,092 metres) course in 2 minutes 5.29 seconds.
Sea The Stars
Distance
One mile and two furlongs (2,000 metres)
Prize money £1,250,000
The Juddmonte International was devised by Major Leslie Petch, a former Clerk of the Course at York but he had stepped down from his position due to ill health before the inaugural race was staged.
IS IT AN INTERNATIONAL RACE?
Oh yes - it certainly lives up to its international billing. Thirteen of the 51 renewals have been won by horses trained overseas. Ireland leads the way with 9 victories followed by France with 3 and Italy with 1. Maurice Zilber, the trainer of the 1974 & 1975 winner Dahlia, was born and raised in Cairo where he trained horses from 1946 to 1962 before moving to Chantilly where he worked for further 43 years. In a the thrilling renewal of 2005, Japanese trained ace, Zenno Rob Roy, finished a close second to subsequent Dubai World Cup winner, Electrocutionist, a colt trained in Italy Today Japan is once again represented, with Durezza hoping to go one better France also fields a strong hand, Zarakem and Calandagan, who will fly the red, white & blue flag.
IS AGE IMPORTANT?
Since the Juddmonte International was first run in 1972, it has been won by 17 three-year-olds, 23 four-year-olds, 11 five-year-olds and only 1 six-year-old, so the stats, as well as the betting market, are in favour of three and four-year-olds.
FIRST WINNER?
The inaugural running of the Juddmonte International in 1972 produced a contest that has gone down in racing legend. Brigadier Gerard was to suffer his only defeat in 18 career starts when headed by that year’s Derby winner, Roberto.
THE LUCK OF THE O’BRIENS?
The very first renewal was won by the Vincent O’Brien-trained Roberto and he added a second in 1983 with Caerleon, a year after David O’Brien won the race with Assert. After a barren spell, Aidan O’Brien got them back on track when Giant’s Causeway won in 2000; the first of his six winners - Duke Of Marmalade, Rip Van Winkle, Declaration Of War, Australia and the 2019 winner, Japan.
John Oxx’s Sea The Stars (Sire of Baaeed) added to Irish success in the race having won in 2009 Aidan O’Brien sends Hans Andersen and City Of Troy, hoping to make it seven winners. Australia
LEADING TRAINERS?
The most successful trainers in the history of the Juddmonte International are Sir Michael Stoute, who has won the race six times courtesy of Shardari (1986), Ezzoud (1993 & 1994), Singspiel (1997), Notnowcato (2006) and Ulysses (2017). Aidan O’Brien (winners on previous page) recorded his sixth win with Japan in 2019
LEADING RIDER?
For a long time, the most successful jockey in the history of the Juddmonte International was the much missed Lester Piggott, who recorded five wins. Piggott tasted success with Dahlia (1974 & 1975), Hawaiian Sound (1978), Commanche Run (1985) and Rodrigo de Triano (1992). However, Frankie Dettori ended things on a high when getting to six, after taking last year’s renewal aboard Mostahdaf His other wins came courtesy of Halling (1996), Singspiel (1997), Sakhee (2001), Sulamani (2004) and Authorized (2007). From today’s pilots, both Ryan Moore and Jim Crowley have won the race twice already.
ANY DUAL WINNERS?
The most successful horses in the history of the Juddmonte International are Dahlia (1974 & 1975), Ezzoud (1993 & 1994) and Halling (1995 & 1996).
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Established in 1977, Juddmonte was founded by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah and consists of three stud farms in England, two in Ireland, and three in Kentucky, USA.
The Prince won back-to-back renewals of this race in 2011 & 2012 with Twice Over & Frankel.
This afternoon marks the thirty-fifth time the race has enjoyed their generous support.
ANY OTHER INTERESTING FACTS?
The shortest-priced winner of the Juddmonte International was the legendary Frankel who blitzed his rivals in 2012 when sent off at 1/10 In victory he set a new record for winning eight European Group 1 races in a row. In 2008 an unbelievably wet summer resulted in the Ebor Festival being abandoned. The Juddmonte International was re-routed to Newmarket, the only time the race has been staged away from York. The rescheduled race, was won by Duke Of Marmalade

BIG RACE TRENDS
THE JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL (BRITISH CHAMPIONS SERIES) (GROUP 1)
PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS
Year Winner Trainer
2023 Mostahdaf John & Thady Gosde Frankie Dettori 3/1 4 ran 2m 6.40s G/F
2022 Baaeed William Haggas Jim Crowley 2/5F 6 ran 2m 9.30s
AGE
Baaeed levelled the scores between the three-year-olds and four-year-olds at four-a-piece in the last eleven years, with the remaining three winners being five (Postponed, 2016, Ghaiyyath, 2020 & Mostahdaf 2023).
DISTANCE
Only the great Frankel in 2012, the 2018 winner Roaring Lion, Rodrigo de Triano in 1992 and 2022 superstar Baaeed have successfully managed to step up in trip and win the Juddmonte International. In 2013, Declaration Of War stepped up from winning over a mile at Ascot but had already proved himself more than capable over 10 furlongs earlier in his career, whilst Arabian Queen had finished third in the Nassau Stakes over ten furlongs prior to winning here. You need a special one to buck the distance trend first time out!
PROVEN AT THE TOP LEVEL
Unsurprisingly for a race of this quality, the last ten renewals have been dominated by regular Group 1 performers, with only 2011’s victor Twice Over having not contested a top level race on his most recent outing. If we look a bit closer, we see eleven of the last twelve winners had at least one group win.
RECENT FORM
Following on from being proven at the top level, it's been a good tactic to oppose any runners without a victory to their name this season, regardless of whether they ran well in defeat. Only Sulamani in 2004 and Roaring Lion in 2018 have won the Juddmonte International in recent seasons having not won a race earlier in the calendar. 2021 winner Mishriff had no domestic victory to his name but had recorded victories in Meydan and Saudi Arabia. Durezza and Bluestocking both failed to win on their previous start.
TRAINERS
Sir Michael Stoute is the joint-most successful trainer in the race’s history with six victories but isn't represented this time around. So Aidan O’Brien will be hoping to move ahead with Hans Andersen and City Of Troy carrying his banner this afternoon.
BETTING
Arabian Queen’s victory at odds of 50/1 in 2015 certainly put a cat amongst the pigeons but on the whole, the Juddmonte International isn’t really a race for shocks. Prior to that you have to go back to Ezzoud’s success at 28/1 way back in 1993 to find the only other big-priced winner. Favourites have a decent record here having won five of the last ten renewals, while all bar one of the last ten have been priced at single figures.
KEY TRENDS
Placed or better in Group 1 last time Proven over 10f Favourite
CONCLUSION
CITY OF TROY comes into the race having won all bar one race in his career. He's racked up two Group Ones already this season, including when proving himself over 10 furlongs at Sandown. He's a brilliant mix of speed and stamina and it's hard to look passed the favourite. His biggest threat will likely come in the form of Alfalila, who represents the older generation today. Jim Crowley is given the ride and connections did win this race last year. His win in the Sky Bet York Stakes was another accomplished success and he's a supremely talented animal that is capable of running a big race on his day.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
City Of Troy has been sent off favourite for each of his six career starts and has only had his colours lowered once, when flopping in the 2000 Guineas. The son of Justify bounced back in no uncertain terms when beating Ambiente Friendly in the Derby and followed that up with success in the Eclipse However, his price once again reflects his chance, so he is taken on with ZARAKEM. The French raider outran big odds to produce a career-best effort when filling the runner-up spot behind Auguste Rodin in the Prince Of Wales’s at Royal Ascot, with Alflaila (fourth) and Royal Rhyme (fifth) behind. He proved he is versatile with regards to ground on that occasion and could gain his first success at the top level. Impressive King Edward VII winner Calandagan and gallant King George runner-up Bluestocking are others to note.

See page 94 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 2m
Race Type:
Prize Money: £100,000
Age: 3+
Stalls: Inside Rail
Our second competitive heritage handicap, your vital statistics are; 3yo+, going two miles. The high handicap rating band of means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the Test cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). Samui will carry the most weight today.
So, pit your wits against the handicapper – as clues, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, noting Evaluation is one to carry both, here.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Forza Orta has failed to reach the heights of his success in this contest last year but if he is judged on his penultimate effort, when sixth in the Northumberland Plate, he has every chance of retaining his crown. However, the less exposed IRON LION makes more appeal. David O’Meara’s four-year-old has improved 15lb since being gelded prior to his 2024 campaign and has shaped as if he would relish this step up in distance. Samui is a fascinating contender under Jamie Spencer and is another to keep an eye on.

Good luck in picking a winner with the knowledge that victory in this race means you can remain unbeaten until at least 1.52pm tomorrow!

KNAVESMIRE TIP
ARTAGNAN was the ready winner of a competitive nursery at Glorious Goodwood, accounting for Cayman Tai, and he is open to any amount of progression on just his second start in a race of this nature so is a highly appealing option in his bid to follow up There are dangers aplenty and the likes of Scatter Penny, Handcuffed and It Ain’t Two are musts for the shortlist. Invited has been highly consistent so far and can provide some decent each-way value on his handicapping bow.
