A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the first Saturday of our 2024 season, I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day of equine stars, Manchester-based footballers and sequined performers!

Today marks only the sixth staging of the Group 3 William Hill Brontë Cup with a prize fund of £100,000, one of forty-one contests in our season to offer a six-figure purse Aimed at fillies and mares over a mile and three quarters, it is part of a wider plan to encourage the best female stayers to remain in training in Britain, beyond their three-year-old careers. One example would be Lmay, who ran at both the Ebor and St Leger Festivals last season for the Clarehaven team. The valuable prize in both monetary and prestige terms has also drawn a brace of entries from over the Irish Sea, as Trevaunance has travelled from County Kildare for the Harringtons, with County Waterford based Henry De Bromhead sending Term of Endearment. That means is it a pleasure to welcome Grand National and Gold Cup winning superstar jockey, Rachael Blackmore, for her first ride on the Knavesmire.

The feature handicap is a valuable sprint over five furlongs, again generously supported by William Hill. A packed field of speedsters, including some familiar names to racing fans, none more so than Copper Knight, who holds the record as the “winningmost“ horse here with seven wins to date They’ll hurtle down the 1,000 metres in under a minute, if you need help finding the winner, then try the “SmartView” version of the form on page 46, by kind courtesy of the Racing Post

Our second race today, remembers Reg Bond, a tremendous supporter of York Racecourse and Yorkshire racing as well as being a shining light for the joy of being an owner-breeder; Project Geofin carries his well-known silks in the 3.55pm this afternoon.

We proudly welcome the friends and families of The Royal Yorkshire Regiment supporting our sixth race of the day, as well as their fabulous band, I hope they all have a memorable raceday.

Following the last race, we look forward to the performance of Mania, The Abba Tribute from the stage between the Knavesmire and Bustardthorpe Stand. The sound system is local to the stage so for the best audio experience, do wander down in front of the stage

The team have been busy preparing for the return of a Saturday crowd, the Roberto Pavilion with its fast-serve bar and fish & chip shop is Phase One of the Southern End Development (see p36) with the rest on track for delivery by the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. We look forward to the opening of the Churchill Tyres lawn and canopy, Reg Bond Gates, improved Theakston Bar, William Hill betting shop and toilets. Please see page (p24) for more information.

Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and the team from New Beginnings.

I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection.. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

A WINTER’S TALE:

WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

A LOT OF WORK HAS GONE INTO THE SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT (SEE P36-37), HOWEVER THE RACECOURSE TEAMS HAVE BEEN BUSY ELSEWHERE…..

WINE & CHEESE BAR

EDWARDIAN WEIGHING ROOM

Since 2015, this one-time hub of the racing operation has been a popular destination for racegoers who want to combine a little nostalgia with their drinks. This winter, a Wine & Cheese Bar has been added. Speaking about the new treats, the head of our food operation, Kevin Pinnington said: “People were always telling me how much they liked the old wine & cheese cellar, then doing our stock take, I realised we had some really lovely wines that were effectively bin-ends because we didn’t have enough bottles to offer them on the main wine list. So, this new bar is a bit of a “back to the future” as it’s a way to let County Stand badgeholders try them by the glass, combined with some traditional favourites. Add in a selection of carefully chosen Yorkshire cheeses plus some cold meats and we hope people will enjoy it.”

KNAVESMIRE

STAND

The high class action on the track is clearly seen from the steppings and boxes of this stand, however the PA system was showing its age. A major investment should mean that the commentators can now better add to the drama and let you know what price your winning bets were returned at As with any new technology, it might take a few meetings to settle in, so please help us by sharing your experience with the team on the ground.

24

ALCOVES BAR

GIMCRACK STAND

Another County Stand area, that once discovered is much loved, has benefited from a winter refurbishment. Lighter and brighter, check out the extended range of Tanqueray gins, offered with premium Schweppes tonics.

MULTIPLE BARS

The new Bar in the Roberto Pavilion should speed up drinks service in that area but we’ve also added even more fast tills, there are nearly 250 around the site. Not to mention thirty new under the bar fridges.

OUT OF SIGHT:

Every winter a whole host of “out of sight work” is completed. The investment in these infrastructure projects keeps the racecourse functioning on the busy days This year the pumps in the Ebor Stand were replaced and drainage works undertaken outside the Gimcrack Stand.

About a mile from the track is the working home of Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty A regular winner of Yorkshire in Bloom Awards, the Victorian Greenhouse has benefited from major refurbishment.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 61-80

Prize Money: £20,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Stand Side

Welcome to the first Saturday of the York season. We start with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance, seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

The best on past form will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight, there are 5 horses that will share this today. As you didn’t ask, their racecard numbers are allocated at random by the computer!

Looking for help? Follow the red bi plane through the card for the racecourse tipster’s recommendations.

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (8 wins from 57 runners, 14%) runs GULLIVER

Weightwatcher: ZAMAN JEMIL won off a handicap mark of 86, his rating is now down 6lb to 80.

Longest Traveller: TIRIAC trained by J Channon, West Ilsley, 199 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 23rd May.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

In a wide-open event, marginal preference is for TIRIAC, who won impressively over 6f at Windsor earlier in the month and a 6lb rise for that success may still underestimate him. Mattice is another recent winner who merits a place on the shortlist, while Holkham Bay and Champagne Sarah are others with strong form claims. Royal Pleasure caught the eye when fourth on his debut for these connections at Thirsk recently and has to be noted.

THE PLAN IS ON TRACK

Southern End Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

As you can see a multi-million pound project to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers is already well underway

The Roberto Pavilion is open for this meeting, providing a fast - serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar Plus, tote & William Hill outlets.

By the time of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival in August, the Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy will be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar that will flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop will reopen, with a new block of toilets.

In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples. That is why there are a few changes to the Southern End today. If you are looking for a pint of Ebor IPA, you can now find it on the Dayjur Bar on the mezzanine floor of the Knavesmire Stand.

Architect impressions of the planned improvements 36

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings, open for use today.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast- serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar. Open for use today.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility

• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.

2nd Race 2.10

The Reg Bond “Always And Forever”

EBF Restricted Novice Stakes

About Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Novice

Prize Money: £20,000

Age: 2

Stalls: Stand Side

This one is limited to the babies of the game, aged just two; they don’t have much if any track experience hence the term “novice”. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock

Now the fun bit, to add a layer of competition (or for some complexity) a runner’s weight can be lowered (an allowance) based on having been bought comparatively cheaply at a recognised auction, so the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and hence potential. The most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. All the boys in the highest band,A, start from a 9st 5lb weight, that explains the burden carried by Arabie and Dark Cloud Rising

AnyhorseinfromalowerBandracinginoppositiontoonefromahigherBand,benefitsfromanallowance,soEpicurianLadcarriesa2lblowerweightbecause“better” horses such as Arabie race against him So on, down the bands, which is why Baylando (from Band C) has less weight again. That’s the male runners explained, the fillies also get a benefit to give them a fair chance given their different physical development at this age, so Ardour, Blue Empress and Simmering carry 9st 2lbs.

If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter

All a bit much? Then go for the alternative “P” for “pin” rather than “pedigree”.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: NATIVE AMERICAN

Trainer: Richard Fahey

Age/Weight: 2-9-7

Runners: 9 SP: 10/1

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 10s

Course Record: 1m 8.90s by Tiggy Wiggy (21-Aug-14)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): R Fahey (31 wins from 449 runners, 7%) runs EPICURIAN LAD and LESLEY’S BOY Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): M Dods (10 wins from 41 runners, 24%) runs SANBONA

Fancy That: A Watson won this race in 2019 and 2022. The stable runs BLUE EMPRESS today. Longest Traveller: ARDEUR trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 23rd May.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

ARABIE displayed plenty of promise when a narrow second on his racecourse bow over 5f at Thirsk last month and Karl Burke’s colt can put that experience to good use here. Ardeur is arguably the most noteworthy of the newcomers, being the first foal out of a mare who was placed in a Group 2 as a juvenile That said, Blue Empress and Simmering are also worthy of consideration.

COPPER KNIGHT: WINNING-MOST

EYES ON OUR THIRD RACE WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER EIGHT.

The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his seven races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come.

He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb seventh victory came back in July.

A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet!

Last July Copper Knight made history by registering another win on the Knavesmire. He remains a stalwart of Tim Easterby’s operation, with a record breaking seven wins. Will Copper Knight continue to make history with an eighth win today?

We return to handicap conditions, remember the best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated horse; Korker is at the top of the weights on this occasion. Five furlongs is the shortest distance in UK racing so don’t blink as they flash home

So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look C denoting has won at York such or D meaning won over this distance. Notice how Copper Knight is one of several here to carry both, given he is the “winningmost” horse on the Knavesmire with seven wins to date.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

KORKER loves it here and the C&D winner looks to have a big shout again today. The five-year-old was only beaten a couple of lengths in a very competitive contest over this track and trip at the Dante meeting and he may take some stopping off the same mark here. Vintage Clarets could turn around form with the aforementioned Democracy Dilemma from Chester, as only a neck separated them that day and he is 1lb better off

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 6f

Race Type: Group Three

Prize Money: £100,000

Age: 4+f&m

Stalls: Inside Rail

The newest Pattern race at York, the Group 3 contest is a valuable prize (£100,000), as well as offering the prestige of “black type” in their pedigree That desire for competition limits the race to horses of the same sex, being all females. The intention is to tempt connections into a longer career on the track for such thoroughbreds before a second life as a broodmare. All the runners start off the same weight as none have won at a yet higher level.

See what the Press think on their selections board by the Winner’s Enclosure, at least you can then blame them.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

The form of Gather Ye Rosebuds’ Listed success at Goodwood received a boost when fifth-placed Madame Ambassador landed the Rothesay at Ayr on Wednesday, and the progressive four-year-old merits respect despite a rise in class. However, RIVER OF STARS won this corresponding event 12 months ago on the back of a similar absence, and she appears to have been laid out for this once more. Trevaunance sets the standard on official ratings and she is of interest now stepped up in trip, while Night Sparkle and classy hurdler Marie’s Rock are two others to consider

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 23rd May.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A tricky puzzle to solve and only a tentative vote can go to MIDNITE RUNNER. Having been gelded over the winter, Michael Dods’ charge returned with a creditable fifth over an extended 7f at Beverley 19 days ago He wasn’t unbacked when sent off at odds of 12/1 in a valuable Newmarket sales race in August of last year, too, suggesting better was expected. This flatter track could play to his strengths and, if doing so, his current mark looks well within range. Both Mr Irrelevant and Diddy Man go in search of their respective hat-tricks and must enter calculations, along with Quiet Resolve, who was far from disgraced in a class 3 over track and trip 10 days ago

YOUR ROYAL COUNTY REGIMENT

“We are The Royal Yorkshire Regiment. Brave and decisive, with over 330 years of history behind us and driven by a relentless will to succeed in everything we do: harnessing battle-winning innovation for the Army of tomorrow; and providing a highly deployable force to train and fight alongside allies and partner nations across the world, today. County-Proud. Combat-Ready.”

What a pleasure and privilege it is for the regiment to once again be part of another exciting day of racing at York Racecourse.

The British Army is fast-modernising and adapting to meet the demands of tomorrow. To talk about what the British Army is doing today and planning for tomorrow, The Royal Yorkshire Regiment provides a powerful example of the diversity of operations, change and demand. Since 2006 we have been deployed on 20 operational tours in support of our nations overseas. In Iraq, Afghanistan, Estonia, and the Balkans we have delivered operational excellence in all that has been asked.

Today our Battalions are deployed globally, with an ever-increasing strategic reach. Against a global

strategic backdrop of developing threats and unpredictability, the 1st Battalion have continued to contribute powerfully on operations abroad with deployments to Iraq and Kosovo supporting NATO. The unit’s focus this year remains on operations assuming the role of the Strategic Reserve Force for NATO. As one of the most ready Light Mechanised Infantry units in the Desert Rats; they are at the heart of the UK’s warfighting capability

The Army’s Next Generation Combat Team, the 2nd Battalion, is equipped with the latest generation of

64

autonomous platforms and information systems, working closely with industry partners and allies to win on today’s and tomorrow’s battlefields. Over the last year they have supported the delivery of the King’s Coronation, developed new concepts and integrated new capabilities, at home and abroad, to gain advantage for UK Defence. Looking forward, they will move to new barracks on Salisbury Plain, conduct further training and later this year deploy to Australia on exercise.

The 4th Battalion is Yorkshire’s Reserve Infantry. Our Yorkshire and Teesside-based Reserves participate in, support and lead, some of the most challenging and demanding activities the Army Reserve undertakes. In the last year they have deployed to the USA on exercise with the US National Guard, mobilised personnel to train Ukrainian

soldiers and undertaken a once-in-a-lifetime expedition kayaking on the River Amazon. In the coming weeks they will be the lead unit on the largest Army Reserve Deployment to Europe since the Cold War. With a presence across our major county cities and towns, both the Battalion and the Band of The Royal Yorkshire Regiment are actively recruiting now.

So, in summary your Royal County regiment is in a good place. Operationally focussed with some highly relevant combat roles in today’s modern Army, we will continue to strengthen our bonds with the county that we come from and represent, collaborating with Yorkshire businesses and organisations, and working more closely with and among the broader ‘community of Yorkshire’. I wish you all an enjoyable and successful day.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 23rd May.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Having relished the step up in trip when scoring with authority over 1m2f at Beverley last time, Terrorise holds strong claims of following up that success today. However, Brian Ellison’s charge will have to defy an 8lb rise in the ratings and that could leave him susceptible to some better treated rivals, such as JAYYASH. The Gosden-trained colt made a pleasing start in handicap company when he was beaten just a head over 1m at Kempton, and he is taken to go one better with this extra yardage likely to suit. Per Contra is another to note.

ALFRED JAMES DUFFIELD REMEMBERED

This year, as a family, we have decided to celebrate the life of Alf Duffield…. perhaps celebration seems an odd way to describe this day but we know he would have loved it, especially being here at York!

Alf loved his horses and racedays, indeed he owned many horses in his lifetime and was no stranger to the Winner’s Enclosure, at various courses, all over the country.

As he might have said, “The sport of Kings, where the world can be won or lost in the span of a few furlongs”.

You are loved and missed today and everyday

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A very competitive contest sees a chance taken on MERESIDE DIVA, who won with something in hand on her latest outing over 7f at Haydock and a repeat of that effort would see her go close once again. David and Nicola Barron’s charge has been raised just 3lb in the ratings which could prove lenient today. Riot was a comfortable winner over C&D last time and he commands respect, despite carrying top weight after going up 6lb for that success, although Craven, who finished third on that occasion, could reverse that form on much better terms. The hat-trick seeking Northcliff should also be thereabouts, while Extrication could feature on his handicap bow.
