DA
THE BOODLES YO RK SHIRE CUP
GROUP 2

A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the third day of our season, one of twelve of the new Premier Racedays, that we look forward to hosting.
Since we raced last year, we are all honoured that Her Majesty The Queen has agreed to become the Royal Patron of York Racecourse York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport and to attracting the best horses to race for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is over £1.5m, representing a six-figure increase on last year, with every race worth £25,000 or more. Every day a feature handicap (the Knights Solicitors Stakes today) has had £15,000 added to it’s purse, so putting today’s card at a record level of £460,000 Giavellotto completes the set of defending champions returning to defend a Group Two feature race, today it is the Boodles Yorkshire Cup If you need help finding the winner, then try the “SmartView” version of the form on page 55, by kind courtesy of the Racing Post
As the picture for Epsom perhaps has become clearer after Secret Satire won the Tattersalls Musidora and Economics The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante; attention today switches to the stayers. We are delighted to host leg one of the QIPCO British Champions Series for this division which will take in the “Cup” races at all the major racing festivals in the months ahead, including the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, back here at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.
More of those quality thoroughbreds will go to post in today’s seven races, headlined by those star stayers in our feature contest. Tower Of London and Giavellotto meet for the third time since Christmas, with Marco Botti hoping his charge can finally get ahead of the Aidan O’Brien contender A young pretender, Gregory, is in his first season on the “Cup” circuit, on the back of a creditable run in both the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and the St Leger
Notebooks or iPad to the ready wherever you look today as some highly regarded fillies undertake the Clipper EBF Marygate Stakes and Sky Bet Stakes, a pair of Listed contests. What’s more, a race only in its second season, a novice affair backed by both Darley and the EBF could well highlight a rising star
This can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. Many thanks to Boodles, Knights Solicitors, Sky Bet, Yorkshire Equine Practice, Darley and the European Breeders’ Fund, for their valuable backing.
The team have been busy preparing for your return, the Roberto Pavilion Roberto Pavilion with its fast-serve bar and fisn & chip shop is Phase One of the Southern End Development (see pages 46-47) with the rest on track for delivery by the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.
Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and the team from New Beginnings.
A special welcome to Year 6 from our local community partner, Clifton Green Primary School, one of three local partners of the racecourse As well as learning about a raceday, they will be interviewing the jockeys, follow our social media feeds later in the year to see how they fared (the jockeys, that is!)
I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day. If you do enjoy it, we race again on Saturday 25 May.

THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI MIDDLETON STAKES (GROUP 2)
Bluestocking produced an impervious performance to land the first Group race on day two.
In a tight betting heat, it was last years winner, Free Wind, who went off favourite under Kieran Shoemark for the Gosden’s.
Second favourite Bluestocking was well supported before the off and sat in the rear, while Sapphire Seas went off in front under William Buick. The Godolphin runner set steady fractions for much of the race and narrowly turned for home in front. She was stalked every yard by her rivals and one by one they fanned out across the track to challenge her
Ryan Moore opted to chart the route closest to the stands and despite passing by Caernarfon with relative ease, she failed to really pick up inside the final furlong.
Sapphire Seas was game out in front and for a moment she looked as though she might hold her rivals all the way to the line. That was until the strong travelling Ralph Beckett filly came to claim her under a motionless Rossa Ryan. The pair quickly extended their advantage once she was asked question and went onto score impressively by six lengths.
The Clarehaven filly stayed on to take second from Infinite Cosmos, with the front running Sapphire Seas forced to settle for fourth.
It was an extremely exciting performance from a filly that threatened to land a big one last year. She will no doubt be a leading player wherever she heads next.

THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI DANTE STAKES (GROUP 2)
It was a day of emphatic performances as Economics came home a ready winner under Tom Marquand.
Jumping straight from a Maiden victory at Newbury to a The Group 2
Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante looked no easy task on paper put the Somerville Lodge colt took to it like a duck to water and bolted up by six lengths, just as Bluestocking had done thirty minutes earlier.
While his rivals were under the pump, Tom Marquand looked as though he had just set off as he cruised past them at the two furlong pole. Once asked the question, Economics lengthened his stride in the fashion of a very good horse and despite looking green in the last furlong, he’s clearly a horse that possesses and enormous amount of ability.
The strongly backed Godolphin runner Ancient Wisdom hadn’t looked the easiest of rides under William Buick and appeared to over race for the first couple of furlongs He eventually stayed on to just pip War Rooms to second, while the supplemented Coolmore runner Cambridge took fourth.
Al Musmak and Caviar Heights didn’t quite run as their odds suggested and will no doubt be back later in the season to make amends.
At present, Economics is currently not entered in the Epsom Derby but that performance will surely have connections considering the £75,000 supplementary fee having backed more than that at York.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection.. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

GUESS WHO?
I trained the winner of the last year’s Group 2 Boodles Yorkshire Cup.

Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? There is an answer for each question.

2. If you’ve managed to guess who I am, can you name the men who trained me? As well as my owner, who incidentally also bred me. For a bonus point, can anyone guess my stud fee at the National Stud?
3. Despite Frankie Dettori being best known for riding me, I was ridden by five other jockeys during my career, Rab Havlin, Robert Tart, Andrea Atzeni and Olivier Peslier but can anyone name the fifth?

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.
Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

A WINTER’S TALE:
WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?
A LOT OF WORK HAS GONE INTO THE SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT (SEE P46-47), HOWEVER THE RACECOURSE TEAMS HAVE BEEN BUSY ELSEWHERE…..
WINE & CHEESE BAR
EDWARDIAN WEIGHING ROOM
Since 2015, this one-time hub of the racing operation has been a popular destination for racegoers who want to combine a little nostalgia with their drinks. This winter, a Wine & Cheese Bar has been added. Speaking about the new treats, the head of our food operation, Kevin Pinnington said: “People were always telling me how much they liked the old wine & cheese cellar, then doing our stock take, I realised we had some really lovely wines that were effectively bin-ends because we didn’t have enough bottles to offer them on the main wine list. So, this new bar is a bit of a “back to the future” as it’s a way to let County Stand badgeholders try them by the glass, combined with some traditional favourites. Add in a selection of carefully chosen Yorkshire cheeses plus some cold meats and we hope people will enjoy it.”

KNAVESMIRE STAND
The high class action on the track is clearly seen from the steppings and boxes of this stand, however the PA system was showing its age. A major investment should mean that the commentators can now better add to the drama and let you know what price your winning bets were returned at As with any new technology, it might take a few meetings to settle in, so please help us by sharing your experience with the team on the ground.

ALCOVES BAR
GIMCRACK STAND
Another County Stand area, that once discovered is much loved, has benefited from a winter refurbishment. Lighter and brighter, check out the extended range of Tanqueray gins, offered with premium Schweppes tonics.

MULTIPLE BARS
The new Bar in the Roberto Pavilion should speed up drinks service in that area but we’ve also added even more fast tills, there are nearly 250 around the site. Not to mention thirty new under the bar fridges.
OUT OF SIGHT:
Every winter a whole host of “out of sight work” is completed. The investment in these infrastructure projects keeps the racecourse functioning on the busy days This year the pumps in the Ebor Stand were replaced and drainage works undertaken outside the Gimcrack Stand.
About a mile from the track is the working home of Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty A regular winner of Yorkshire in Bloom Awards, the Victorian Greenhouse has benefited from major refurbishment.

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)
See page 78 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 5f
Race Type: Listed
Prize Money: £70,000
Age: 2f
Stalls: Centre

We start with a Listed race over the shortest trip in UK racing, five furlongs. It is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, being the development tier of the four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1.
This race is for those that are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that the horses sire is registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe.
Strong performers will be watched closely as they progress, previous year’s winners have gone on to win the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Sky Bet Lowther at our own Ebor Festival.
This early in their career, your selection comes down to a choice of the two “p”s, pedigree or pin.
LAST YEAR’S RACE

In a red-hot renewal, it was Got To Love A Grey who emerged victorious for Karl Burke. Noticeably strong in the market, she kept on well inside the final furlong to hold stablemate, Dorothy Lawrence.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 15th May.
KNAVESMIRE TIP
Lily Agnes winner Seraphim Angel should be on the premises if repeating the effort on this more conventional track. However, Karl Burke fields a strong hand in his bid for a third consecutive victory in this race, with MISS LAMAI rated the pick of his three entrants after an eyecatching winning debut at Thirsk. Her stablemate Kaadi also impressed when landing a novice at Windsor, while Invincible Annice is another Burke runner sure to be wiser after her Pontefract introduction.

This is the first handicap of the afternoon. Such races are designed for close competition, so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best will be the highest rated horses, Epic Poet, here, so will carry top weight.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
A six-length winner at Hamilton when last seen, BOTANICAL progressed very nicely during his three-year-old campaign and could be hard to beat if he picks up where he left off A 10lb higher mark obviously complicates the matter and the likes of the consistent Majestic, Loyal Touch and Stressfree could all exploit any weakness shown by the Roger Varian-trained selection. A winner over C&D last summer, Andaleep is also dangerous to underestimate, despite running off 5lb higher

TOP JOCKEY AT YORK
The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the acclaimed Living North Trophy, as well as £2,500, to celebrate their achievement

Clarendon House started the day off with a bang for Tom Marquand, who moved into a clear lead of the 2024 Living North Top Jockey championship.

THE PLAN IS ON TRACK
Southern End Development
Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.
As you can see a multi-million pound project to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers is already well underway
The Roberto Pavilion is open for this meeting, providing a fast - serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar Plus, tote & William Hill outlets.
By the time of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival in August, the Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy will be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar that will flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop will reopen, with a new block of toilets.
In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples. That is why there are a few changes to the Southern End today. If you are looking for a pint of Ebor IPA, you can now find it on the Dayjur Bar on the mezzanine floor of the Knavesmire Stand.

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:
• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings, open for use today.
• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast- serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar. Open for use today.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
The unbeaten DEVOTED QUEEN has shown versatility in her two previous starts and although she made hard work of landing a conditions race at Kempton last month, the daughter of Kingman displayed a willingness to dig deep in the closing stages. That was her first try over a mile and she can progress further back on turf with a hood added. The Boodles Yorkshire Cup FACT FILE:
Distance
One mile, five furlongs abt 188yds (2,770 metres)
Prize money
£180,000
WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN? WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
It had been intended to launch a new two mile handicap in 1926, but racing was cancelled because of the General Strike and so it began 12 months later. After the war it became a Conditions race and in 1966 the distance was reduced to one mile and six furlongs. In 1971 it achieved Group 2 status.
The Boodles Yorkshire Cup is the first of the major stayers’ Cup events, what you might term the “Grand Slam”. It pits the established stars against the young pretenders. The status of the race is such that it forms the opening leg of the Long Distance Championship category of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

Stradivarius
In this case anyway, as Ardross, winner in 1981 and 1982, was the first thoroughbred to claim two Boodles Yorkshire Cups.
The previous winner, Stradivarius, make history and became only the second back-to-back winner of the race in 2018 and 2019
Stradivarius returned in 2022 to make it a famous hattrick of wins.
A POT OF GOLD? NOT SO FAST
Incredibly, given Irish success in almost every sphere of modern horse racing, this race has always eluded raiders from the Emerald Isle Southern France pushed Stradivarius all the way in 2019, but apart from that, their best effort in the last decade was from the then Thomas Carmody-trained Royal Diamond who finished third to Glen’s Diamond in 2013. This year Ireland arrives with another strong hand, can Tower Of London or Vauban provide an Irish winner for the roll of honour

LEADING TRAINERS?
The legendary Cecil Boyd-Rochfort bagged seven victories in a career that spanned four decades – The Scout II (1931), Kingstone (1945), Premonition (1954), Dickens (1960), Sagacity (1962), Raise You Ten (1964), and Apprentice (1965). Saeed bin Suroor and Sir Michael Stoute both have trained five winners, after the latter’s Royal success of Dartmouth in 2017 Clarehaven stables, operated by John & Thady Gosden, has three successes in the race thanks to the great Stradivarius and today it falls to Gregory to fly their Clarehaven flag.
LEADING RIDER?
The late Lester Piggott has eight wins - Pandofell (1961), Aunt Edith (1966), Knockroe (1972), Bruni (1976), Bright Finish (1977), Noble Saint (1980) and Ardross (1981, 1982). Frankie Dettori gave a good account with six winners – Arzanni (1991), Kayf Tara (2000), Marienbard (2001), Mamool (2003) & Stradivarius (2018, 2019 & 2022). Of the current crop Ryan Moore could add a fourth win to his name should Tower Of London come home the winner
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Plenty of local winners down the years with both the Peacock and Elsey families making their mark. Middleham-based Harry Peacock and his son Dick both saddled a winner, as did the legendary Malton trainer Captain Charles Elsey, followed later by his son Bill. In more modern times Zindabad landed the spoils for Middleham trainer Mark Johnston in 2002 as did Glen’s Diamond for 3000 man, Richard Fahey in 2013, whilst Clever Cookie kept the Yorkshire end up with victory for Peter Niven.
But there could not be a more local winner than Templestow who took the very first running in 1927, for he carried the colours of Colonel Hugh Stobart, a former Steward at York who lived at nearby Middlethorpe Hall, now a popular resting place for owners and racegoers alike.
Al Qareem is the sole representative of the North for Karl Burke.

PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS
Year

2013 Glen’s Diamond Richard Fahey
INTRODUCTION
The Boodles Yorkshire Cup, part of the QIPCO British Champions Series, is widely recognised as the first major stayers’ race of the season.
TRAINERS
The victory of Stradivarius two years ago gave his trainers John & Thady Gosden a third win in the race but with the retirement of the star-stayer, they will instead look to Gregory to fly the flag.
RECENT FORM
Two of the last eleven winners won on their previous run before the Boodles Yorkshire Cup, with six of those eleven winners having had their last run over 202 days ago. Last year’s winner Giavellotto had been well beaten on his only start prior to winning last year, so it doesn’t necessarily pay to have had a good previous run. Don’t be afraid to back something running for the first time that season.
OFFICIAL RATING
In terms of official ratings, the benchmark for winners appears to be 110. The only horse in the last decade to win this race with a rating lower than that was Glen’s Diamond, in 2013, so it seems best to focus our attention on the higher-rated horses.
BETTING
With an average winning SP of just under 5/1 and a record of five winning favourites, it is fair to say that the market has proved an excellent guide in the recent years. Glen’s Diamond caused a shock in 2013 when winning at 25/1 and Giavellotto returned an sp of 14/1 but despite this, it has often been best practise to follow those at a single figure price.
KEY TRENDS
Focus on those towards the head of the betting
Oppose those yet to win a Group race
Oppose runners officially rated less than 110
CONCLUSION
A vintage renewal of the Boodles Yorkshire Cup is made even better by the presence of Vauban for Willie Mullins. Closuttons globe trotter hasn’t been out since November of last year but he will likely be primed for this. Ireland’s other representative Tower Of London carries a 3lb penalty after his Group Two win in Meydan. He is a likely winner but that aforementioned penalty will take some overcoming. After the late withdrawal of Hamish, the trends now point to last year’s winner GIAVELLOTTO as the one to be with on this occasion. Last year’s winner has had two prep run and should be ready to defend his crown.

Also part of the Pattern race pyramid is the Group 2 Boodles Yorkshire Cup.
The race is over the comparatively long distance for a flat race of a mile and three quarters, and like long distance human athletes, the stamina required to win tends to develop with age so this race is for horses aged four and older
Identifying a successful stayer could make for a profitable summer, so maybe visit the paddock to get a closer look before making your selection and then watch all the field closely

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Last year’s winner Giavellotto boasts every chance providing the rain stays away, while Vauban must be taken seriously for powerful connections. The vote goes to TOWER OF LONDON, though, who arrives on the back of a career-best performance at Meydan. Aidan O’Brien’s charge won the Dubai Gold Cup well in March and that was on the back of another taking win at Riyadh. Last year’s St Leger fourth could continue to progress this year and can give these rivals weight and a beating.

The next is a novice race, created by Darley to provide a valuable opportunity for older horses that are still learning their trade, perhaps having missed their juvenile season through an injury The only one to have previously recorded a W is First Conquest in the blue of Godolphin, consequently additional weight is handed to him Recognising the physical differences at this stage of their careers, the fillies get a little help, see how Mystical Maria has a lighter burden.

John & Thady Gosden saddled the winner of this contest 12 months ago and they appear to have another excellent chance with LEAD ARTIST this time around. The Dubawi colt broke slowly on his debut before finishing with purpose to get within a nose of First Conquest, who had the run of the race, in the Wood Ditton. He is 6lb better off and will prove very hard to beat with any improvement. Dark Tornado adds further spice having chased home Ghostwriter as a juvenile

If an apprentice jockey partners a horse they can claim a reduction in weight (called a claim) to balance their relative lack of experience, see how Ben Sanderson earns some relief for Bass Player by claiming 3lb.
Needing some help, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see how Challet has both won over course and distance.

Distance: 5f
Race Type: Handicap Rating: 71-90
Prize Money: £25,000
Age: 3

RACE DESCRIPTION
We end the Dante Festival with a final handicap.
“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 90 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar
If judgement of form has failed you so far today, it might be time to resort to a spread bet or just try your favourite colours; for some that will be the wearing of the green by Irish Nectar, it has been known to pay a dividend in such races.
Good luck, we hope you can go into the weekend ahead of the bookies!

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Hedge Fund merits plenty of respect having run well off this rating twice already this season, although preference is for JUBILEE WALK. James Ferguson’s inmate got off the mark on his final start as a two-year-old and confirmed his well-being when winning on his handicap bow at Kempton last month. A 5lb rise for that success may underestimate this unexposed colt and the drop in trip should not be a problem. Vantheman edges out Ziggy’s Missile and Vince L’Amour to be best of the rest
