FEATURING THE TATTERSALLS MUSIDORA STAKES GROUP 3 DANTE FESTIVAL 2024
15TH
A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the opening day of our 2024 season, and the first of our twelve of the new Premier Racedays. We are all honoured and delighted that Her Majesty The Queen has agreed to become the Royal Patron of York Racecourse
York Racecourse is committed to attracting the best horses. So, prize money for the Dante Festival is over £1.5m, a six-figure increase on last year, with every race worth £25,000 or more. Additional prize money has been invested in Group races, handicaps and development races to reward the 104 declared horses. Let’s hope we see a similar quality of winners to last year when Soul Sister won the Tattersalls Musidora before becoming the eighth filly to complete the York/Epsom double The Clarehaven stable have won 50% of the Musidoras run in the last decade, Friendly Soul flies the Gosdens flag today.
If the fillies are about showing potential, then the sprinters in the Group Two 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stakes are about established speed. Defending champion Azure Blue takes on proven Group 1 star, Art Power, from Tim Easterby’s yard near Malton. The grey faces Khadeem, a fellow scorer at the highest level, after his long journey from Lambourn. If you need help finding the winner, then try the “SmartView” version of the form on pages 44-45, by kind courtesy of the Racing Post.
The winner of our opening race today can reserve itself a berth in those supersize stalls on Saturday 24 August, as it is a “Sky Bet Race to the Ebor” contest (see page 18 for details).
All that before a potential record-breaker in our second race If Dakota Gold comes into the Winner’s Enclosure, it will be for the 7th time, so would make him the joint “winning most” horse, drawing level with Copper Knight.
Current Charles Clinkard Champion Trainer, Richard Fahey, will be hoping his 6 runners can shine on a day when the guests of Charles Clinkard are celebrating their 100th business anniversary with us, welcome all.
These prize funds can only be achieved through your attendance and the backing of our sponsors. Many thanks to Tattersalls, Clipper, Churchill Tyres, Sky Bet, the European Breeders’ Fund, and Conundrum HR Consulting for their much appreciated support.
The team have been preparing for your return, the Roberto Pavilion with its fast-serve bar, betting facilities and fish&chip shop is phase one of the Southern End Development (see pages 40-41) with the rest on track for delivery by the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.
Equine ambassador, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back; do say hello to him and the team from New Beginnings.
Racing Welfare are leading the sport through Mental Health Awareness Week, we are proud to play our part.
Many racegoers will remember guide dog Grady, a faithful friend and lifelong companion to Jeremy Cassel, who helped his owner share the magic of visits to the Knavesmire. Today, a bronze of Grady will be unveiled, both in tribute and significantly as a way of continuing to raise funds for a charity that relies on public donations. “Grady’s statue” will look towards the Winner’s Enclosure from the end of the Melrose Stand, please join the presentation party for the unveiling between the first and second races today.
For expert analysis of today’s action, I’d commend the BAFTA winning team from ITV Racing, the show will be available on ITVX later- many congratulations to all involved for this prestigious award for your coverage of our sport.
A final thought and prayer goes out to Stuey Weston, a regular at this meeting who loved his “get out stakes kitty”. His friends celebrate the man, whose presence today they will miss, by our last race.
I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day.
William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

GUESS WHO?
I rode the winner of the opener on the first day of the Dante Festival last year
WHO AM I?
Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided?
1. Foaled in 2006, I was crowned European Champion 3-Y-O filly in 2009. I had two big wins on the Knavesmire, which included the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes in 2009. Any guesses?
2. If you’ve managed to guess me, can you name who trained me throughout my career and for a bonus point, can you name my owner. Clue, I wore the same colours as last year’s winner Soul Sister.
3. In August of 2009, I was narrowly beaten in the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks but can anyone name the filly who bested me by three-quarters of a length? She was trained by John Gosden.
YORKS RACING CHALLENGE
Can you name the runners who ran at York on day one of the Dante Festival, from the clues below?
1. Andrew Balding opened the 2023 season with a win in the opener. His runner was partnered by Hayley Turner but if you’re still struggling, the horses name is also a pub classic, often accompanied by chips and peas.
2. Oisin Murphy stormed to victory aboard this Kevin Ryan runner in the second on this day last year, the clue is a former Leeds manager, responsible for leading them back to the Premier league.
3. The Tattersalls Musidora went the way of Frankie Dettori in his GB swansong season. Put a ‘Hey’ before this horses name and you get a popular song by Train.
4. The second in the 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes of 2023 was a very popular sprinter trained by John Quinn. She won the Coolmore Nunthorpe in 2022.
5. Sean Levey and Richard Hannon teamed up to land the fifth race of the afternoon twelve months ago. Add the word ‘Zero’ before his name and you are left with a 2012 American historical thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow.
Answers to today’s puzzles can be found on page 77.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.
Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

This season sees the latest staging of the famous race as part of a an extensive partnership with Leeds-based Sky Bet.
York Racecourse and its longstanding partner are committed to both cherishing and yet developing the track’s most famous race.
Today sees the next instalment of a series entitled the “Race To The Ebor” which includes four high-class staying contests, including an Irish race held at The Curragh. The four races nominated for the “Race To The Ebor” are:
Sky Bet Melrose Handicap (3YO only)
York - 1m 6f
Saturday 26 August 2023
Sky Bet Jorvik Handicap (4YO+)
York - 1m 4f
Wednesday 15 May 2024
Sky Bet Stakes (Handicap, 4YO+)
The Curragh - 1m 6f
Wednesday 5 June 2024
Sky Bet Ebor (Handicap
4YO+)
York - 1m 6f
Saturday 24 August 2024
Sky Bet Grand Cup (Listed, 4YO+)
York - 1m 6f
Saturday 15 June 2024
The winners of the four races above will be guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2024 provided they are entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2024 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money.
In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process.
To complement this initiative York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration. After his success in the Sky Bet Melrose last August, we know that Middle Earth already has a “golden ticket”.

A WINTER’S TALE:
WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?
A LOT OF WORK HAS GONE INTO THE SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT (SEE P40-41), HOWEVER THE RACECOURSE TEAMS HAVE BEEN BUSY ELSEWHERE…..
WINE & CHEESE BAR
EDWARDIAN WEIGHING ROOM
Since 2015, this one-time hub of the racing operation has been a popular destination for racegoers who want to combine a little nostalgia with their drinks. This winter, a Wine & Cheese Bar has been added. Speaking about the new treats, the head of our food operation, Kevin Pinnington said: “People were always telling me how much they liked the old wine & cheese cellar, then doing our stock take, I realised we had some really lovely wines that were effectively bin-ends because we didn’t have enough bottles to offer them on the main wine list. So, this new bar is a bit of a “back to the future” as it’s a way to let County Stand badgeholders try them by the glass, combined with some traditional favourites. Add in a selection of carefully chosen Yorkshire cheeses plus some cold meats and we hope people will enjoy it.”
KNAVESMIRE STAND
The high class action on the track is clearly seen from the steppings and boxes of this stand, however the PA system was showing its age. A major investment should mean that the commentators can now better add to the drama and let you know what price your winning bets were returned at As with any new technology, it might take a few meetings to settle in, so please help us by sharing your experience with the team on the ground.
22
ALCOVES BAR
GIMCRACK STAND
Another County Stand area, that once discovered is much loved, has benefited from a winter refurbishment. Lighter and brighter, check out the extended range of Tanqueray gins, offered with premium Schweppes tonics.
MULTIPLE BARS
The new Bar in the Roberto Pavilion should speed up drinks service in that area but we’ve also added even more fast tills, there are nearly 250 around the site. Not to mention thirty new under the bar fridges.
OUT OF SIGHT:
Every winter a whole host of “out of sight work” is completed. The investment in these infrastructure projects keeps the racecourse functioning on the busy days This year the pumps in the Ebor Stand were replaced and drainage works undertaken outside the Gimcrack Stand.
About a mile from the track is the working home of Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty A regular winner of Yorkshire in Bloom Awards, the Victorian Greenhouse has benefited from major refurbishment.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m 4f
Race Type: Handicap
Prize Money: £65,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Centre
Welcome back. We start with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition, with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance, seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best will be the highest rated horse; Klondike being the highest rated horse in this race.
The winner is guaranteed a start in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor itself (subject to key criteria), hence the unusual title, see the dedicated page in this racecard on page 18 to learn more.
Use the Press Selections Board by the Winners Enclosure to guide you or give you someone to blame.

Longest Traveller: WESTERTON trained by A King, Barbury Castle, 212 miles. NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 13th May.
KNAVESMIRE TIP
A subsequent wind procedure since KLONDIKE’s disappointing last-placed finish in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer at Newbury in August could unlock some improvement in William Haggas’ lightly-raced colt. The son of Galileo enters handicaps off what looks a workable mark, particularly if judged on his fourth in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket the month before. The biggest threat may emerge from easy Epsom scorer Crystal Delight, while a gelding operation may see Marhaba The Champ bounce back to form. KLONDIKE

GRADY: A FAITHFUL COMPANION REMEMBERED
Jeremy Cassel remembers Grady with sculptor, Mark Coreth, looking on
Many racegoers will remember Grady, a faithful friend and lifelong companion to Jeremy Cassel, who helped his owner share the magic of visits to the Knavesmire.
Since 1931, Guide Dogs have transformed the lives of over 36,000 people and Grady was one of them.
Today a bronze marquette of Grady will be unveiled by his owner, both in tribute and significantly as a way of continuing to raise funds for a charity that relies on public donations.
The life size reproduction becomes the second piece of work from master sculptor, Mark Coreth, to be on display at York Racecourse World renowned for his ability to capture subjects from the animal kingdom, Mark was chosen by the late Prince Khaled Abdullah to remember Frankel. The likeness of the world’s highest rated thoroughbred and winner of the 2012 Juddmonte International can be seen by the Sir Henry Cecil Gates, at the northern end of the course.
Grady will look towards the Winner’s Enclosure from the shadow of the Melrose Stand, please join the presentation party for the formal unveiling between the first and second races today. While you are there, consider donating to the charity and remember to rub Grady’s nose for luck!

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 6f
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 86-105
Prize Money: £50,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Centre
Again, a handicap, this time for horses rated between 86 and 105. Like in the game of cricket a rating of 100 denotes a good performer. The shorter distance of only six furlongs usually makes for a tight finish.
So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see Dakota Gold is one such, after all he has won here six times already!

KNAVESMIRE TIP
CHAIRMANOFTHEBOARD could be worth chancing. The eight-year-old retains plenty of his old ability, as evidenced by his recent placed effort on the Rowley course at Newmarket, and a similar performance might prove sufficient. Summerghand could go well too judged on his eye-catching Newmarket performance last month, while Mr Wagyu is a two-time C&D winner and must be respected on the back of his close-up second at Ripon on his seasonal debut 18 days ago CHAIRMANOFTHEBOARD

THE PLAN IS ON TRACK
Southern End Development
Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.
As you can see a multi-million pound project to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers is already well underway
The Roberto Pavilion is open for this meeting, providing a fast - serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar Plus, tote & Willliam Hill outlets.
By the time of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival in August, the Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy will be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar that will flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop will reopen, with a new block of toilets.
In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples. That is why there are a few changes to the Southern End today. If you are looking for a pint of Ebor IPA, you can now find it on the Dayjur Bar on the mezzanine floor of the Knavesmire Stand.
Architect impressions of the planned improvements 40
THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:
• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings, open for use today.
• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast- serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar. Open for use today.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.

The 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stakes
FACT FILE:
This is one of the first major six furlong sprints so provides clues as to where the top honours will end up in the speed division.
Distance
Six furlongs (1,207 metres)
Prize money
£150,000
The 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stakes, named in honour of Prince George, Duke of York (later King George V.) was introduced at York’s August meeting in 1895 Back then it was a middle-distance race for three-year-olds before it morphed into a six furlong handicap in May 1950, became a conditions race in 1968, achieved Group 3 status in 1971 and was promoted to a Group 2 in 2003.
Joe Mercer partnered the John Sutcliffe-trained Hard Water to victory in 1968.
Joe Mercer
The Roll of Honour includes Indian Ridge (1989), Royal Applause (1997), Invincible Spirit (2002) and Monsieur Bond (2004) all of which became top-class stallions after their racing days were over 2021 winner Starman went onto achieve more Group One glory The 2022 winner, Highfield Princess, went on to triple Group One success, making John Quinn’s flagbearer one of the very best to win the race.
Handsome Sailor is the only horse to win the race twice. He took the prize in 1987 and 1988. Add in a Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes and a triumph in the Prix de l’Abbaye confirms that he was a smart sort. In his hat-trick bid he could finish only 9th. Therefore history suggests that Azure Blue has it all to do in defending her title.

LEADING TRAINER?
Barry Hills has seven victories - Noble Mark (1974), Flash n’ Thunder (1980), Jester (1982), Handsome Sailor (1987, 1988), Royal Applause (1997) and Prime Defender (2010). Rather appropriately, his son, Charlie, saddled the 2016 victor, Magical Memory. So no pressure on Khaadem!!
LEADING RIDER?
Michael Hills, Lester Piggott and Steve Cauthen each won the race four times. Of the current crop, Jamie Spencer would earn his own treble were Khaadem to emerge victorious today.
KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY
Michael Hills, another son of Barry, rode four winners whilst Gianfranco Dettori won aboard Three Legs (not literally) in 1976 so his son Frankie continued to build the family connection when winning on Lend A Hand (2000), Delegator (2011) and Magical Memory (2016).
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Combining the business sense and love of racing of Yorkshire Owner, Steve Parkin, this new name to racing will combine breeding, ownership and a new twist on syndicate membership
Venture Capitalist gave David “Dandy” Nicholls his first Group winner in 1996 whilst Bollin Joanne (1998) and Pipalong (2001) gave Malton trainer Tim Easterby a brace of victories. Bryan Smart scored with Monsieur Bond in 2004 and in 2007 Amadeus Wolf provided the first of Kevin Ryan’s two winners in the race –Tiddliwinks (2012) being the other so far. Highfield Princess gave Yorkshire another success for local trainer John Quinn before coming back later in the season to win the Coolmore Wotton Bassett Nunthorpe! Today the North is well represented by Azure Blue, Swingalong, Spycatcher, Art Power, Marshman, Washington Heights, Cold Case & Commanche Falls.

INTRODUCTION
The 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes is a sprint of the highest quality and there are some real speedsters on its roll of honour. As is always the case, this year’s renewal looks well up to standard with two Group One winners in the field.
AGE
The successes of Starman, Invincible Army, Harry Angel and Azure Blue in the last five years have solidified the dominance of four-year-old’s in recent years. Highfield Princess was the only five-year-old in the last seven renewals to take the prize, will four-year-olds continue their domination today?
GROUP FORM
With the exception of Tiddliwinks in 2012, the previous ten winners had all won at Listed level or better earlier in their careers and therefore it would seem fruitless supporting a runner that is yet to prove themselves. However, only Society Rock, Maarek and Harry Angel had already won a Group 1 prior to winning here.
TRAINER FORM
No recent trainer has asserted their dominance over this race from a winning perspective, but Michael Dods is once again well represented with Commanche Falls and defending champion Azure Blue.
CONCLUSION
RECENT FORM
Race fitness has proved an important factor in recent seasons, 2021 winner Starman defied that trend when winning here after a 207 day break Invincible Army had a run prior to winning in 2019 but like Starman the 2018 winner Harry Angel also won off a break. Highfield Princess and last year’s winner Azure Blue both had the benefit of at least one run earlier that season.
BETTING
The fact that Harry Angel and Invincible Army were only the fourth and fifth winning favourites in the last 13 years suggests that this is a race in which the market leader can be opposed. Equally, there have also been some shock results during the same period; including Glass Office’s victory at 40/1 and Tiddliwinks’ success at 25/1, so if you do fancy a horse at a big-price don’t be put off.
KEY TRENDS
Won previously at Listed level Aged four Run this season
The obvious place to start is with Azure Blue for the Michael Dods team. Last year’s champion is having her first start of this season, which hasn’t always been profitable according to the trends. Four-year-olds have the best record in the race, so you have to rate the chances of Marshman for Karl Burke. He has had the benefit of two runs this campaign and is already a winner in Group Three company. Karl Burke does look to have a strong hand and the preference would be for SWINGALONG. She showed plenty of talent at three and has already won over the Knavesmire in the William Hill Summer Stakes. Expect her to be bang there in what looks a competitive renewal.

Here, top class sprinters can hit c40mph in our first Pattern race of 2024.
This Group 2 six-furlong sprint is towards the pinnacle of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, spread over four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1.
Runners of the same sex and age are expected to carry the same weight. Weight allowances are made for the variation in strength of 3yos and fillies, see how Azure Blue benefits as a filly, with no three-year-old representation today. Upwards adjustments are also made, those with previous success in yet higher company get weight added back on; see how previous Group 1 winner Art Power now carries an extra burden.
Perhaps, visit the Parade Ring to make your final selection.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
This could be fought out between those at the foot of the weights in AZURE BLUE and Swingalong, with the Michael Dods-trained mare edging the vote. Although the five-year-old found the July Cup beyond her last season, she remains one to follow in 2024 The aforementioned Swingalong was far from disgraced on her final effort in 2023 when finishing fourth in the Ascot Champions Sprint Stakes and she merits respect, while a race-fit Spycatcher is sure to have his supporters too.

Musidora Stakes FACT FILE:
WHO WAS MUSIDORA? THE AUSSIE ANGLE?
Musidora was part of five Classic victories for the partnership of Charles Elsey and Edgar Britt.
A lightweight rider who hailed from Sydney. A brace of Darley Yorkshire Oaks triumphs were also on a successful CV Britt passed away in his native land, in January 2016, aged 103.
Distance
One mile, two furlongs and 56 yards (2,050 metres)
Prize money £130,000
Musidora, named after Jeanne Roques who was a famous French star in the silent movies, was a real superstar of the late 1940s. She was trained at Malton by the legendary Captain Charles Elsey to win the 1949 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Epsom Oaks just a few weeks later.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
As one of the first Pattern races for three-year-old fillies, it lets connections see how their fillies have matured over the winter
FIRST WINNER?
Ambergris, trained by Harry Wragg and ridden by Lester Piggott, she was the 4-9 favourite sparking a five year winning run for ‘The Jolly’.
WHY A CLASSIC TRIAL?
Lester Piggott
Simples - since 1961, eight winners have won the Betfred Oaks - Noblesse (1963), Bireme (1980), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), Reams Of Verse (1997), Sariska (2009), Snowfall (2021) & Soul Sister (2023). A number of near misses, notably Emily Upjohn, the 2022 winner who came so close on the Downs.
THE LUCK OF THE IRISH?
Irish-trained fillies have won eight times overall. Paddy Prendergast secured a hat-trick from 1963 to 1965 with Noblesse, Ela Marita and Arctic Melody. Vincent O’Brien won it with Where You Lead in 1973 whilst Jim Bolger has also won it three times courtesy of Condessa (1981), Give Thanks (1983) and Lush Lashes (2008). Aidan O’Brien had his first win in the race back in 2021 with Snowfall. The County Tipperary yard is represented today by Mayfair

LEADING TRAINERS?
The late Sir Henry Cecil won an astonishing nine times –Fatah Flare (1985), Indian Skimmer (1987), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), All At Sea (1992), Magnificient Style (1996), Reams Of Verse (1997), Passage Of Time (2007) and Aviate (2010). Sir Michael Stoute and the Gosden duo are on eight wins a piece. With Sir Michael without a runner today, it falls to Friendly Soul to draw Clarehaven level.
LEADING RIDER?
Top US rider Steve Cauthen, was aboard Last Feather (1982), then benefited as retained jockey to Sir Henry Cecil between 1985-89 so rode five winners. Last year Frankie Dettori took his tally to seven victories with Soul Sister and despite calling time on British racing last year, his record will likely last for many years to come Of the current crop, Ryan Moore and William Buick have both ridden two winners, today only Ryan Moore has a ride, with Mayfair hoping to make it three wins.
HAT-TRICK HEAVEN
Garnie Bougoure rode a hat-trick of winners from 1963 to 1965 and Brian Taylor followed suit from 1966 to 1968. Twenty years later Steve Cauthen achieved the same remarkable treble from 1987 to 1989. Frankie Dettori became the latest treble-riding jockey in 2017
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Tattersalls are Europe’s largest Bloodstock Auctioneers and the world’s oldest, dating back to 1766. From Park Paddocks in Newmarket, Tattersalls offers more than 5,000 thoroughbreds each year The nine different sales include market leaders in every category. Today will see another page written in the history of this significant contest.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Since the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes was first run in 1961 only one Yorkshire stable has managed to win it. That accolade goes to Middleham’s Mark Johnston who saddled Secret History to victory in 2005 and then Rose Of Kildare to success in 2020’s renewal. Today his son Charlie carries Yorkshire’s hopes, as Francophone hopes to join those previous Kingsley House stars.

INTRODUCTION
The Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes is regarded as a trial for next month’s Betfred Oaks at Epsom but is also a valuable prize in its own right, boasting a six-figure prize fund. Since this race was first run in 1961 eight fillies have gone on to win both events – Noblesse was the first in 1963 and the most recent was 2023 superstar Soul Sister.
TRAINER FORM
John Gosden is the most successful trainer with a runner this year. He won this race for the first time in 1993 courtesy of Marillette and has since added seven further victories. In fact, those seven successes have all come since 2011, with his most recent victory coming courtesy of Soul Sister just last year, today he has the well fancied Friendly Soul.
GROUP FORM
2021 winner Snowfall continued the trend of having run in a Group race before turning up here. She ran in no fewer than four Group races as a juvenile. Whereas 2022 Emily Upjohn went against that trend when winning last year’s renewal, having only ever run in Novice Stakes. In this years field only Classical Song and Francophone have contested a Group race.
TWO-YEAR-OLD FORM
Past winners in recent seasons had mostly been competing at a high level during their juvenile season. Both Rose Of Kildare and Snowfall had remarkably busy two-year-old campaigns, with the former having five wins from eleven starts
Continuing this thread, horses who have had a busier two-year-old campaign tend to perform better however Soul Sister, Emily Upjohn and Shutter Speed all had a quieter one and were all trained at Clarehaven. So don’t let Friendly Soul’s lack of experience put you off.
RECENT FORM
Eight from the previous eleven winners had at least one run that season, with four of those having won that engagement. Only Classical Song and La Pasionaria haven’t had a run this campaign.
BETTING
The Tattersalls Musidora has often been a race for punters but more recently there has been a shift away from favourites. Four of the last ten winners were favourites however only one of the last six was sent off favourite.
KEY TRENDS
Trained by John Gosden
Run this season
Two-year-old form
CONCLUSION
Classical Song has some useful form as a two-year-old, including when second in the Group 2 Filles’ Mile. She hasn’t had the benefit of a run yet this season but could be a threat if she’s trained on. Francophone is the sole representative for Yorkshire but she looked to have her fair share of ability and you’d like to think there’s more to come from her this season. The emerald Isle’s sole representative is Mayfair. She’s yet to shed her maiden tag and may find this a bit too competitive. The preference is for the Clarehaven filly, FRIENDLY SOUL, the daughter of Kingman ticks almost every box and looks to have an excellent chance for a yard which excels in this race.

Back to competitive handicap conditions, this time for horses rated between 76 and 95, remember those nearest that ceiling are considered the best and will carry more weight.
“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and here the upper rating of 95 means that the spotlight will not be stolen by a proven superstar.

After a brace of wins on the all-weather, FIRE DEMON rates a key player back on turf over this trip, especially with his yard in fine form just now. Allied to that, Oisin Murphy is currently riding at the top of his game and his presence in the saddle is a major plus as the son of Dark Angel bids to defy a further 6lb rise. There are dangers aplenty, though, as the likes of Elmonjed, Respectful and True Promise are all likely improvers

Our penultimate race is for 2yo colts and geldings that are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that the horses sire is registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe
It’s the first season for all these runners meaning level weights, though previous success warrants an additional burden, notice Francisco’s Place after his recent Pontefract victory.
In tipping terms, it is a choice of the “Ps”, pedigree or pin.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
A highly encouraging second on his debut at Musselburgh last month in a contest where the third has come out and scored since, the well-bred STATION X is open to plenty of improvement for the in-form Bryan Smart team. King Of Light has similar claims on the back of a promising third at Windsor where he was sent off favourite, while Francisco’s Piece and Zabeel Road both have penalties to overcome for comfortable first-time-out successes.

Stuey Weston & Friends “Getting Out” Stakes
Our friend Stuart loved the Dante meeting beyond all others. Wherever he was working in the world, he’d always make sure he made the pilgrimage back to the Knavesmire to enjoy the action with his mates.
The first day is always the best, because everybody comes to it fresh and full of hope, and the over-indulgence of the previous days isn’t casting its shadow on proceedings. A day with far too much time spent on the champagne lawn would precede the highlight of the afternoon – the communal bet on the lucky last, or the “Getting Out Stakes” as we liked to call it.
This year Stuart isn’t with us, having died a little over a year ago at just 49-years old, but his friends are here to raise a glass, have a bet and send him off.
If you’d like to join in, look around you, and enjoy the precious time you get with your friends. Think about picking one horse in his race and all backing it so you can cheer it home together But raise a glass to one another, and feel privileged to be here at the best racecourse in the world in one of the most beautiful cities.
Stuart loved it, and so do we.
From all Stuart’s friends and colleagues

WAHRAAN caught the eye on his third run for these connections at Windsor, losing plenty of ground early due to a tardy start before staying on well for third. The son of Le Havre has dropped 4lb below his last winning mark and he gets the vote ahead of recent Lingfield second Dancing In Paris and Newcastle winner Bringbackmemories, who ran well over C&D last July. Asgard’s Captain and Burglar’s Dream cannot be ruled out either
