A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for a new day in our calendar, I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of both equine stars and cool performers!
In a card worth £200,000, the single most valuable contest is the Vickers.bet Stakes, a handicap over the flying five furlongs. As an indication of a competitive contest ahead, every single runner has already been successful over the distance with four having also won at York.
This investment in our sport is made possible by your backing and that of our valued sponsors. Our thanks to Vickers Bet, Rio Restaurant (a great spot for an after-racing steak!), the Atkinson Family, European Breeders’ Fund and Jigsaw Sports Branding (the team responsible for the many signs you see on course, each day.)
Following the last race, we look forward to the performance of FastLove, the tribute to the great George Michael. The sound system is local to the stage, between the Knavesmire and Bustardthorpe Stands, so for the best experience, do wander down to the front, as it will not be on the television audio.
If this is your first visit, the Flying Frankie serving Theakstons Ebor IPA is a destination on the John Carr Terrace that is worth checking out. Whilst on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand the York Kitchen and Cafe serves a range of home-made goodies, including deep-filled Yorkshire Puddings. The weather looks set to play its part, so the County Stand Garden offers both fresh air and a fresh perspective of the racecourse
Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and the team from New Beginnings.
Go down to the rails to feel as well as hear the thunder of hooves, take a selfie in front of the flower wall, have some fun with 360-degree camera, sip a glass of bubbles on the champagne terrace, keep track of both the international rugby and cricket on the screens; however, you spend your day, I hope you enjoy it.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there disabled and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.
Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.
Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.
Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

HERE’S THE PLAN
Southern End Development
Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for both horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to continue to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus for the next capital project being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.
A planning application has been submitted for a £5 million investment to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers.
Subject to approval, work will commence following the October meeting and be open for the busy racedays in the 2024 season.
24
Architect impressions of the planned improvements
THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:
• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing stand.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston’s Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates and improved accessibility.
• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Village Bar.
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and rainwater harvesting, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge

Come meet our Equine Ambassador today!
Racegoers can meet former racehorse Goldream along with the New Beginnings team in the Clocktower Enclosure.
Goldream was trained by Robert Cowell in Newmarket and was a dual Group 1 winner of the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and Prix de L’Abbaye at Longchamp and he also enjoyed some successful trips here at York! He is now retired from racing and resides at the rehoming and re-training of racehorses’ charity New Beginnings.
When he is not meeting people at the races, he enjoys taking part in dressage competitions, hacking and eating carrots!

Novice Stakes (GBB Race)
Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)
See page 76 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 6f
Race Type: Novice
Prize Money: £20,000
Age: 2
Stalls: Centre
We start the day off with a Novice contest, this race is limited to 2yo female horses and is over the distance of six furlongs.
All the runners today start from the same weight, as the complication of having a penalty weight after a previous victory is rendered moot, as the field are all chasing that first success.
All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.
Perhaps an early visit to the Parade Ring to assess who looks a likely sort may prove fruitful.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
STAINCLIFF was sent off at 25/1 on debut at Sandown eight days ago, but she ran a race full of promise to finish runner-up and a repeat effort would give her a big chance here. Invincible Molly has posted two solid performances so far and should not be discounted, along with All Agleam, who improved from her on debut run to finish a fine third at Haydock earlier this month.

Now for the first handicap of the day, designed for close competition, the handicapper is an independent assessor who rates horses on their past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. Run over ten furlongs, the ratings or handicap band of 61-80 is a further way to help make it an exciting and hard to predict contest. The horse considered by the handicapper as the best will carry the most weight, Innse Gall here. Perhaps the advice of our expert panel on the Winner’s Podium at 1.15pm will give you the answer.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
A gelding operation and the switch to handicap company has been the making of UNLIMITED, who backed up his breakthrough triumph at Newbury with a last-gasp Kempton victory William Haggas’ three-year-old has been bumped up another 5lb, but he did account for an in-form opponent at the Sunbury circuit and is worth sticking with. Invisible Friend showed the benefit of wind surgery when scoring at Doncaster, while Award Dancer bounced back to form when coming out third best in a blanket finish at the last meeting here.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
EMPEROR’S STAR chased home an exciting prospect on his Newmarket debut in July before coming unstuck in testing conditions at Sandown. The son of Sea The Stars opened his account in workmanlike fashion at Chelmsford last time, but an opening mark of 91 would appear to be within his range and he is taken to make a winning nursery debut. Classy Boy merits consideration now upped in trip, while Up The Jazz must also be noted back on turf following a below-par run at Southwell.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
THE TURPINATOR was value for more than the winning margin suggests at Thirsk last time out and a 4lb rise could prove to be lenient as he looks to follow up Runner-up over course and distance twice before and a narrow winner at Thirsk recently, No Nay Nicki is a key player, along with Percy’s Lad, who wasn’t beaten far at Chester last time. Orbaan and Wild Lion are classy sorts who cannot be ruled out, while Another Investment and Fortamour are also capable of being in the shake-up

The York Race Committee wishes to offer special thanks to the Trustees of the British European Breeder’s Fund for their generous support of 21 races, spread across the eighteen-day York season.
HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE A BIG HANDICAP? THE VICKERS.BET HANDICAP
1) FORM
Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few who come here without having the best of recent records and so might be best ignored today; Proverb, Came From The Dark and Existent.
2) THE DRAW
This afternoon’s Vickers.Bet Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with twenty two closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of? Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology. Narrowing down the field of twenty two declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horses most recent form.
Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Intrinsic Bond is rated 100 is considered 1lb “better” than Fine Wine who is rated 99. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight theoretically Intrinsic Bond should win every time as he is the better horse. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field. So in this example Intrinsic Bond carries 1lb more than Fine Wine, which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the twenty two runners – but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all twenty two runners cross the line together so how to separate them in advance?
Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into.
Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!
Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running straight. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn down the centre of the track have often held the upper hand, the counter logic being that their jockey can keep an eye on the competition on both flanks. This perhaps counts out those drawn widest, Proverb drawn one and Count D’orsay drawn twenty two.
3) DISTANCE
Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable. Vintage Clarets, Jm Jungle and Ventura Express have all won over today’s distance.
4) GROUND
If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. Cuban Mistress is one who would enjoy a quicker surface. However Count D’orsay has previously won on a surface that is a little softer. So make sure to check the weather and the ground description.
5)
YORK RECORD
“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground. This year only three that have won at the course and distance are Fine Wine, Alligator Alley and Muker
6) CONCLUSION
Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Going on a hunch that ‘good to soft, soft in places’ will be the description, the John Quinn-trained Jm Jungle might well take advantage of his good form on a surface he favours. He’s won over the distance before and John Quinn thrives on Yorkshire winners!
Due to the competitive nature of today’s handicap, a Tote Trifecta is also suggested: Jm Jungle, Muker and Intrinsic Bond.

Our richest race today is a test for the flying machines, over the shortest trip in British racing, just five furlongs. Open to three-year-old horses and older, the competitive edge is based on past performance, with Intrinsic Bond allocated the top weight today.
Need some help? Look further for the letter “D” which denotes a win over this distance, unhelpfully that applies to all of them today. So, add in “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York; see how Fine Wine qualifies on both counts.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Despite finishing a neck in front of Jm Jungle (fourth) when a close third in a similar event at Haydock (Ventura Express sixth) a fortnight ago, Arecibo is 1lb better off with that rival and another bold bid is expected from Robert Cowell’s eight-year-old. However, slight preference is for DESPERATE HERO, who has gone up 6lb for his impressive Newbury success but the booking of a 5lb claimer helps ease that burden and he remains very much on an upward curve. Intrinsic Bond should give it a good go off top weight.

Another ticklish handicap to solve, is this race for the established stayers. Watch them come past the stands twice as they race over the longest distance of the day, completing a circuit of the Knavesmire. Remember, the best will be the highest rated and so will carry more weight, so State Legend will not be quite as light on his feet as top weight today.
An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race

KNAVESMIRE TIP
The progressive SOLUTION looks the way to go after he secured a double over this distance at Lingfield, and he is only 4lb higher for that effort. Marbuzet is also on a hat-trick and struck with his head in his chest at Musselburgh last week so has to be respected off a 6lb higher rating. Zimmerman could have a say after his third at Chester, when he had September Power behind him.
