SKY BET EBOR FESTIVAL
FEATURING THE SKY BET
OFFICIAL RACECARD £4.00 SATURDAY AUGUST 26TH
2023
EBOR
A very warm welcome to the final day of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival 2023, featuring the most famous race of our season – the Sky Bet Ebor. This year’s renewal offers a purse of £500,000 making it Britain’s richest flat handicap, so no surprise that it has attracted a very high calibre field – have fun picking out the winner! Ahead of the Sky Bet Ebor we will welcome the riders in this historic race to the parade ring – do come and cheer them down the steps.
It has been a week to savour so far, with both Mostahdaf and Warm Heart putting on impressive displays in landing the Juddmonte International and Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks. Add in Live In The Dream flying home in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe and it has already been a memorable few days
There is a rare match off between Champion flat training operation John & Thady Gosden with Sweet William and Champion jumps trainer Willie Mullins with Absurde and Jackfinbar – both trainers have won the Sky Bet Ebor in the past. Scampi won the Race to the Sky Bet Jorvik Stakes at the Dante qualifier to guarantee his berth in the race and we wish his Raceshare owners, who pay less than £100 for a share in him, all the very best as they roar him home
Leeds based Sky Bet are our headline partners and share a vision for this Ebor Festival, we are delighted that the City of York which is of one of 13 races to carry their support, is prospering. The prize money of £500,000 means a Group One level of reward making for a classy field, headed by Kinross the defending champion, who is already a Group One winner for Ralph Beckett.
His rider is Frankie Dettori, as the Knavesmire bids a fond farewell and says thank you to a man who has lit up the track on so many occasions, since his first winner back in 1990 To read more about his York career, see p32-33. He sits on 67 Ebor Festival winners alone; what price a finale treble?
We are delighted to welcome the 22 Ebor Community Sweepstake finalists to York as set out on page 64-66 of the racecard. These good causes have been nominated by members of their community, shortlisted from a large field and each are assigned a runner in the Sky Bet Ebor The one connected to the winning horse will win £20,000 for their organisation, with all contenders earning a £1,000 donation. Wherever they finish, we hope they thoroughly enjoy their Ebor day and we offer our thanks and admiration.
We have some top class racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors.
In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the Slater Menswear Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room. Partners such as The 8th Sign, No1 by GuestHouse and the Hole in Wand are offering great prizes for all you stylish racegoers, plus it is great fun!
Watch the RAF skydive team arrive in style at 1.20pm, visit Goldream the retired racehorse in Clocktower Enclosure, listen out for the Shepherd Group Brass Band, dance into the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Mercier Champagne for just £48 a bottle, enjoy the 360-selfie camera or taking your own selfie with the Lexus Melbourne Cup or on the Frankie Trail; whatever, it is just our pleasure to welcome you and hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION
THE WEATHERBYS HAMILTON LONSDALE CUP (GROUP 2)
A fascinating field of seven contested our first Group race of the day, with Quickthorn being sent to the front to cut out the running.
After his win at Goodwood a few weeks prior, those in behind were wise to Tom Marquand’s plan and sent their mounts up to sit close behind the leader.
River Of Stars sat second, with Coltrane and Nate The Great in third and fourth. Favourite Courage Mon Ami and Frankie sat at the back of the field, with the four-year-old looking a little out paced at the back of affairs.
This was no surprise as they were going quite the clip up in front. Coming down the back straight they pace began to slow as Tom Marquand got a breather into last year’s winner. Coming into the straight the leader stepped the pace up once more and those in behind were quick to pick up the chase. Frankie made up good ground on Courage Mon Ami but it was Coltrane and Oisin Murphy who were travelling best of all.
The pair breezed past the pace maker, who began to slip back through the field after making all the running.
Oisin looked to be in control but would not have it all his own way as he was quickly joined by Boodles Yorkshire Cup winner Giavellotto. As they came into the final furlong his effort began to fade out and despite the late charge of Frankie, Coltrane was always doing enough to win the race.
THE COOLMORE WOOTTON BASSETT NUNTHORPE (GROUP 1)
Adam West was very much living the dream yesterday as his stable star romped home in yesterdays Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe.
Steve & Jolene De’Lemos had already tasted success at the Ebor Festival in 2020, when full brother Live In The Moment won the Sky Bet Apprentice Handicap.
Yesterday they took their ownership to new heights as Live In The Dream put in a memorable front running performance to deliver Group One glory.
Sean Kirrane broke smartly on the four-year-old to take an immediate lead from the field. Favourite Highfield Princess sat in second with Regional and sole juvenile Big Evs completing the vanguard.
Live In The Dream had a three length advantage coming to the two furlong pole but Jason Hart still looked confident in the saddle on favourite Highfield Princess. King’s Stand winner Bradsell had begun to weave his way through the field and began to make his challenge on the long time leader.
As they hurtled down to the furlong pole there was still two lengths separating Live In The Dream from his rivals and try as they might they couldn’t catch him.
He came home to win by a length for Adam West, giving both him and jockey Sean Kirrane a first Group One win.
His win now earns him a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita on November 5th. A race they now firmly have their sights on.
RESULT 1st Coltrane 11/4 2nd Courage Mon Ami 5/2F 3rd Giavellotto 5/1
RESULT 1st Live In The Dream 28/1 2nd Highfield Princess 7/5F 3rd Bradsell 9/2 15
A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there disabled and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.
Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

GUESS WHO?
I trained the winner of the William Hill Brontë Cup this year.
WHO AM I?
Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided?
1. Owned by Juddmonte, I now stand at Banstead Manor for £7,500. I won a pair of Group Threes’, including the now upgraded Group Two Sky Bet City Of York Stakes 2018.
2. My sole Group One win didn’t come in England, Ireland or France. Instead coming in America, does anyone know which race? Bonus point for the jockey...
3. Another to stand at Banstead Manor is Kingman. Sire of 42 Group winners, can you name which of his sons won last year’s renewal of the Group Two Sky Bet City Of York Stakes?
YORKS RACING CHALLENGE
1. Back on Macmillan Charity raceday, a certain Stuart Williams trained runner bought up a five-timer. If you’re struggling, it’s a group of Native American peoples from Western Washington
2. On the same card, Joseph Parr rounded off the day with a winner. His winner is also known as the Foliate head.
3. Fast-forward to July and William Haggas fired in a short price winner to land the John Smith’s Silver Cup Stakes. But who was he?
4. The Group 3 John Smith’s Stayers’ itself was won by an American blues musician/songwriter from the 1930’s (Well okay, his namesake).
Last name Johnson if American Blues isn’t your strong point!
5. Owen Burrows took the spoils in the Group Two Sky Bet York Stakes. Owned by Shadwell, he was unusually not ridden by Jim Crowley. His last ride on the Knavesmire came on Coco Jamboo on Thursday....
Answers to today’s puzzles can be found on page 93.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.
Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.
Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

HERE’S THE PLAN
Southern End Development
Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for both horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to continue to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus for the next capital project being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.
A planning application has been submitted for a £5 million investment to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers.
Subject to approval, work will commence following the October meeting and be open for the busy racedays in the 2024 season.
24
Architect impressions of the planned improvements
THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:
• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing stand.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston’s Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates and improved accessibility.
• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Village Bar.
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and rainwater harvesting, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS
THE TALE OF THE CLOCK
Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 48.50s
Course Record: 1m 46.61s by Scottish (20-Aug-16)
All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years
Leading course trainer (17-22): R Fahey (26 wins from 451 runners, 6%) runs SPIRIT DANCER
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Beckett (14 wins from 50 runners, 28%) runs JIMI HENDRIX
Fancy That: Sir M Stoute won this race in 2017 and 2019. The stable runs NOSTRUM today.
Longest Traveller: JIMI HENDRIX trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles.
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 24th August.
KNAVESMIRE TIP
NOSTRUM can be excused his shock defeat at Goodwood earlier this month as ground conditions had turned pretty testing, but he should have no issues here and can take this before heading on to bigger and better things. El Drama ran his best race for a while when chasing home Al Aasy at Haydock on his first start for Karl Burke and looks the biggest threat, while Jimi Hendrix continues to improve and can’t be discounted.

THE RAY GILPIN AWARD FOR THE TOP JOCKEY OF THE WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE EBOR
This award remembers Ray Gilpin, a popular figure in both the Weighing Room & Press Room who sadly passed away in 2015.
A proud welshman, you’ll notice the armband worn by the rider in front, is in scarlet. The colour of the scarf that Ray always wore to the races.
Ryan Moore will wear the armband today as he moved to four winners in our penultimate race yesterday. With Tom Marquand only one behind on three.

DOUBLING UP DOWN UNDER
Whilst Australia’s premier racecourse might be more than 10,500 miles from York, operating in a different hemisphere; the links between the Knavesmire and Flemington are actually very close.
Not only do the teams at the two venues regularly share best practice but their signature contests are interwoven by the participants.
As recently as last year, Deauville Legend won the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur before being installed as favourite at Flemington. If we consider the last running not severely impacted by the pandemic, three thoroughbreds graced both the Sky Bet Ebor and the Lexus Melbourne Cup; with the Charlie Fellowes trained, Prince of Arran, being placed second in “the race that stops the nation” after a top ten finish at York.
What’s more, in three of the last four prior to that, the Lexus Melbourne Cup the Sky Bet Ebor winner has made the top ten.
Despite the fact the Covid-19 is hopefully now behind us, there is still a real challenge of doing the double Deauville Legend became the latest to go close, finishing fifth after being sent off favourite. He joined Heartbreak City in 2016 and Purple Moon in 2007, who both headed down under as champions to find only one better in their bid for a famous double
The two courses offer valuable prize money and are widely regarded as a proper test of the racehorse, so it is not easy to land a major prize at either never mind, both. That honour so nearly went the way of Rekindling, who gave Joseph O’Brien a first major success in the Melbourne Cup of that November having been placed fourth in the Al Basti Equiworld Dante Stakes in the northern hemisphere in the May of 2017

FUN TIMES REMEMBERED
As well as the star horses, the same sense of fun is shared by the occasions that host the feature races.
Again this year as in 2019, York Racecourse was honoured to be the only British host to the Lexus Melbourne Cup on its charitable global tour
Over a memorable few days in 2019, the unique trophy was the star of numerous racegoers selfies as well as visiting racing yards and the East Yorkshire village that shares its name Though for many followers on Social media, it was the appearance with the irrepressible Yorkshire Terriers that captured their hearts.
A year later and Cross Counter gave the Godolphin operation their first victory at Flemington, however the Charlie Appleby trailblazer had only managed a close up second on the Knavesmire in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur of that August.
It had been the opposite way around for Max Dynamite in 2015, when the Ricci family owned gelding partnered Frankie Dettori into the York Winner’s Enclosure in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, to just miss out in Australia, behind Prince of Penzance.
In more than quarter of a century since Vintage Crop so memorably became the first European trained of Melbourne’s big race, only two other raiders have come home with the famous three-handled trophy. Whether any of this week’s champions will join that elite list, only time can tell, but York has certainly been an important part of the career of many who have already come close.

The Sky Bet Melrose Stakes
One Mile About Six Furlongs (2,700 metres)
See page 94 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m 6f
Race Type: Heritage Handicap
Prize Money: £170,000
Age: 3
Stalls: Inside Rail
A competitive heritage handicap for 3yo horses, run over a mile and three quarters; more significantly the first contest in the 2024 Sky Bet Race to The Ebor Series, see page 67 for details.
Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The horse considered by the handicapper as the best, on past performance, will carry the most weight; Davideo carries the top weight today.
Check out the Press Selections Board adjacent to the Winners Enclosure for some tips (or someone else to blame).
LAST YEAR’S RACE
Winner: SOULCOMBE
Trainer: William Haggas
Jockey: Hollie Doyle

Clearly very well-handicapped from a rating of just 83, the William Haggastrained three-year-old galloped into the lead two furlongs out in last year’s Sky Bet Melrose before being eased down close home. Impressive.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
The in-form Lordship is a prime contender for a yard that has won two of the last four renewals, while Denmark has a lofty reputation and is high on the shortlist as he looks to lay his St Leger credentials on the line However, MIDDLE EARTH appeals as a highly-progressive stayer and this step up in trip can bring about further improvement from this son of Roaring Lion. Similar applies to Davideo, who got better the further he went at Newmarket last month but he has gone up 7lb for that success.

Weight allowances are in play for this race, see how Isaac Shelby as a three-year-old and the filly, Olivia Moraldo both benefit. Look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name; obviously, Kinross, as the defending champion carries both.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Kinross is likely to be a red-hot favourite to repeat his victory in this race last year and he holds an obvious chance after his success in the Lennox at Glorious Goodwood. However, the vote goes to MUTASAABEQ, who could attempt to blaze the trail up the Knavesmire now dropping in distance under Ryan Moore after failing to land a blow in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes. Based upon his success in the bet365 Mile at Newmarket, followed by a respectable fifth in the Lockinge, he ought to go very close Isaac Shelby is another to consider

The winners of the four races above will be guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2023 provided they are entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2023 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money.
In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process.
To complement this initiative York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration. After his success in the Sky Bet Melrose last August, we know that Soulcombe already long held a “golden ticket”, albeit a return from Oz where he now plies his trade meant it was always a long shot. Andrew Balding’s Scampi booked his place after a strong staying performance back in May and looks set to give a bold bid with Jason Hart doing the steering. Nusret showed he’s not just a classy hurdler when landing the Curraghs qualifier for Joseph O’Brien but a change of ownership meant a different path was chartered. Quickthorn triumphed in the last qualifier but this year took his place in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup.

Where have four decades gone, Sea Pigeon was a most popular winner in 1979 The nine-year-old gelding, once ante-post favourite for the Derby and a future dual Champion Hurdle winner, represented Yorkshire trainer Peter Easterby and carried 10 stone to victory He was ridden to victory by jump jockey Jonjo O’Neill – now a highly successful trainer
OR FOR THE POST MILLENNIUM GENERATION…
When Sergeant Cecil won another great race on Knavesmire? He won the 2005 Sky Bet Ebor on his first visit to York and added the Stobart Rail Northumberland Plate and the Cesarewitch in the same year to make history by becoming the first horse to land the three premier staying handicaps. The gelding always raised his game on the Knavesmire and later added the Yorkshire Cup, the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup and the rearranged 2006 Doncaster Cup to his triumphs here.
FIRST WINNER?
Pagan was the first winner of the race, ridden by Slim Templeman and trained by John Scott. The 6-1 shot carried 7st 13lb and was a popular winner. Soon the betting public was hooked and York’s fortunes blossomed.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
Simply it is York’s most famous race, and shares its name with the Roman city, EBORACUM that is now known as York. It is the biggest gambling heat of the week here on the Knavesmire and the oldest race of the Festival, first run 1843.
WILL IRISH EYES BE SMILING?
They were in 2009 and 2010 when Sesenta and Dirar won for Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott respectively and again in 2014 when Mutual Regard won for Johnny Murtagh. But overall, runners from over the water don’t have the greatest of records, after a lean spell in the later years of last century and first decade of this, illuminated only by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Mediterranean in 2001, fortunes have been better of late With the ill-fated Heartbreak City’s impressive triumph in 2016 and Mustajeer winning 2019’s race, this new era was confirmed as Sonnyboyliston took the prize back to Ireland for Johnny Murtagh. Yashin, Sunchart, Absurde and Jackfinbar represent Ireland today. Mutual Regard

LEADING TRAINER?
The recently-retired Luca Cumani was the trainer to follow, having won it three times - Vicious Circle (1999), Mephisto (2004) & Purple Moon (2007). Johnny Murtagh has won two of the last ten renewals, including the 2014 renewal, and with Sonnyboyliston in 2021. John & Thady Gosden went within one of Luca Cumani as Trawlerman joined Muntahaa (2018) as winners for Clarehaven. Today they could tie if Sweet William can get the job done.
LEADING RIDER?
The much missed Lester Piggott, whose statue is now on the Edwardian Weighing Room Lawn, leads the way with five victories. When it comes to the current crop, there are three to have won the race before, Jim Crowley (Benaud) and Jamie Spencer (Rodrigo Diaz). While Frankie could end in style on three wins should Absurde win.
THE 3-YEAR-OLD QUESTION?
With the Sky Bet Ebor becoming one of Europe’s richest and best handicaps, it was the right time to consider how the race best fits in to the overall racing programme. For the three-year-olds, the established Pattern programme has a proven rhythm and it is not the intention to alter running plans for the best of the Classic crop The investment in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur keeps the pathway to a record level of £250,000 for the Betfred St Leger The Ebor will now focus on stayers aged four and upwards. The Race to The Ebor also links the more valuable Sky Bet Melrose with next season, so retaining a 3-y-o connection. In practical terms, the stats show that as the quality of the Ebor has increased, only two horses aged three actually made the stalls in the last decade (prior to the switch), with the last classic generation winner back in 2001, when Mediterranean took the spoils.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker
We’ve been making betting better for years and we’re home of First Race Specials and the Soccer Saturday Price Boost. We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and recently have extended our partnership with York Racecourse, which includes the sponsorship of a lucky 13 races this week.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE
STABLES FIGURE?
Yorkshire-trained horses have a good overall record, although Moyenne Corniche became only the fourth winner in the past 27 renewals when triumphing six years ago for Brian Ellison. The late Jimmy Fitzgerald saddled Sapience to score in 1989, the now record-breaking Mark Johnston’s Quick Ransom was the hero in 1992 and Les Eyre won with Far Ahead in 1997. Tashkhan and Get Shirty represent the White Rose today.

BIG RACE TRENDS
THE SKY BET EBOR
PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS
AGE
The seven-year-old Litigant became the oldest winner since Sea Pigeon back in 1979 when landing the spoils eight years ago but the group to focus on is the five and six-year-olds, who between them have landed six of the last ten renewals. They represent over half of the twenty-two runner field this time around.
DRAW
Usually in races such as this, being drawn on the rail is an advantage but that hasn’t proved the case in the Sky Bet Ebor. The fact that eight of the last ten winners have been drawn in stall 12 or higher suggests that is in fact the higher drawn horses which seem to be favoured. With victory in the Ebor being held in such high esteem, those jockeys drawn low have shown a tendency to break far too quickly from the stalls in order to take advantage of their draw but only end up setting a furious early pace which can often set the race up for more patiently ridden rivals.
OFFICIAL RATINGS
Horses rated between 99 and 108 may have won the race nine times in the last ten renewals but as the weights continue to compress, you need to be rated that high to even get in nowadays. The highest rated winner in recent years was Muntahaa, who won off a mark of 109 in 2018. Surprisingly, Mustajeer, Fujaira Prince and Sonnyboyliston, were all rated 108. So take note of Live Your Dram, Enemy, Tashkhan, Scriptwriter and Cemhaan.
CONCLUSION
RECENT FORM
Unexposed, dark horses do not win the Ebor. Nine of the last ten winners had achieved a top five finish on their most recent start. We can take this trend one step further when you consider that seven of the last ten winners had achieved a top two finish on either or both of their two latest starts. This bodes well for Sweet William and Absurde.
BETTING
Whichever way you look at it, this is not a race in which following the favourite has proved a fruitful strategy - there have only been three winning favourites since 1998. In the last ten years, we have had winners at 20/1, 25/1 and 33/1, so the best advice is to back your selection regardless of the starting price.

With the record of classier and therefore top class animals too good to ignore, it makes sense that we focus on those at the head of affairs. Live Your Dream represents last years winning connections and is tasked with carrying top weight. He's been running in a lot of the top handicaps this year but carrying top weight in an Ebor is no easy task. SCRIPTWRITER was only a head behind Hamish in the Group Three John Smith's Silver Cup and remains on level terms with the re-opposing Tashkhan, who finished in third The Milton Harris trained four-year-old is better known for his jumping exploits but has not looked out of place in a couple of top races on the flat. We know he will stay the trip and there still may be more to come from a horse so unexposed on the flat.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m 6f
Race Type: Heritage Handicap
Prize Money: £500,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Inside Rail
Probably our most famous race, the Sky Bet Ebor, is open to 4yo+ horses and over a trip of a mile and three quarters. This race is theoretically open to any horse regardless of its official mark. The highest rated, still set to carry the most weight in this race today, are Live your Dream and Enemy.
The runners are undoubtedly amongst the best in their class in Britain so remember to follow their progress in future contests, they could star in the Lexus Melbourne Cup as this is the only race outside Australia to provide a “ballot exemption” for the first Tuesday of November
Perhaps take a close up look in the Parade Ring before they go to post to make your final selection.
LAST YEAR’S RACE

An absolutely thrilling renewal of the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap last year saw Trawlerman just get the better of Alfred Boucher as he battled on gamely all the way to win for Clarehaven, Godolphin and Frankie Dettori.

Longest Travellers: YASHIN trained by Mrs J Harrington, SUNCHART trained by A Slattery, ABSURDE & JACKFINBAR trained by W P Mullins - all Ireland.
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 24th August.
KNAVESMIRE TIP
An eye-catcher on his latest run in a valuable handicap at Galway, JACKFINBAR has shown promise in both starts since joining the Willie Mullins yard A Group 3 winner at Longchamp in 2018, the eight-year-old has not had much racing since but looks to retain plenty of ability. The recent Goodwood winner Sweet William has to be of interest. A stablemate of the selection, Absurde must enter calculations for Frankie Dettori, along with Real Dream, Hms President and Scampi.

Course Record: 1m 8.23s by Mince (09-Sep-12)
All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years
Leading course trainer (17-22): D O’Meara (27 wins from 382 runners, 7%) runs ABERAMA GOLD and SUMMERGHAND
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): A Balding (8 wins from 54 runners, 15%) runs KING’S LYNN
Weightwatcher: MR WAGYU won off a handicap mark of 100, his rating is now down 5lb to 95.
Longest Traveller: KING’S LYNN trained by A Balding, Kingsclere, 216 miles.
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 24th August.
KNAVESMIRE TIP
Aberama Gold arrives here seeking a hat-trick after wins over C&D and most recently over 6f at Glorious Goodwood and he can offer another bold bid today, but having been raised a further 5lb, he may be susceptible to some better treated rivals, such as MR WAGYU. John Quinn’s charge is 5lb better off with that rival today and he can avenge that two and a half length defeat. Last year’s winner Summerghand looks sure to go close, while The Green Man is also noted.

The final leg in our Pattern Race journey this week, this Listed race is for 2yo horses over five furlongs. The shorter distance usually makes for a tight finish.

Maybe an in-form yard is the way to go, check out the table before this race.

Purosangue (second) had the beating of BAHEER (fourth) in the Molecomb at Goodwood earlier this month. However, the latter travelled into contention smoothly that day and was perhaps blunted by the deteriorating ground conditions. Back on a sounder surface, the son of Mehmas is fancied to reverse that form. Third in the Windsor Castle, Inquisitively should be thereabouts with the consistent Alabama. Sketch and Cover Point are just two more to consider

KNAVESMIRE TIP
The unexposed three-year-old Obelix was beaten just under a length behind Killybegs Warrior on his latest outing, but he gets a 2lb pull in the weights, which can see him reverse that form. However, preference is for LOYAL TOUCH, who could be seen in a much brighter light with the return to quicker ground and a flat track. Haunted Dream is also of interest
