A very warm welcome to a day of both speed and endurance at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. The race programme features both the fastest race of our season – the Group 1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe, as well as our richest staying race – the Group 2 Weatherbys Hamilton Insurance Lonsdale Cup. Both races form part of the QIPCO British Champions Series and the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe is also part of the “win and you’re in” Breeders Cup Challenge Series for the Turf Sprint.
The feature sprint puts a spotlight on some of the quickest horses; battling it out for a record prize fund of £500,000 It is a race run in under a minute, so take your place, hold your breath and enjoy. The locally-trained, defending champion, Highfield Princess, faces some fresh rivals, most intriguingly Bradsell who nudged ahead of her at Royal Ascot. Bidding to be only the sixth horse in history to land the race as a juvenile, the owners of Big Evs, have paid £40,000 in a late entry fee in the belief that his rapid progression is yet to peak. As we say adieu to him, Andrea Atzeni has picked up a fascinating spare ride, as Big Evs regular rider, Jason Hart, is aboard the defending champion. Keep your eyes on that giant stopwatch.
A little earlier in the day and it’ll be the turn of the leading juveniles to contest the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, it will tell us which connections are to address the 252nd Gimcrack Dinner in December.
Operating at the other end of both trip and experience is a second defending champion, the Hughie Morrison trained, Quickthorn, who faces six rivals. Including both the Gold Cup and Boodles Yorkshire Cup victors, in the longest race of the week, the Group 2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup.
If that wasn’t enough, we have the richest maiden race in the land, one of twenty-three York contests to receive the generous backing of the European Breeders’ Fund, notepads and Ipads at the ready come 4.45pm, a star may well be revealed.
Today sees the retirement from the saddle of a great friend, jockey Paul Hanagan. Two-time British Champion and four-time leading rider at York, we wish Paul and his friends and family the very best for a tremendous last day riding. Please come to the Winner’s Enclosure, after the first, for a presentation to Paul.
The “World Pool Moment of the Day”, is an initiative that sees an expert panel select a highlight on each of the three weekdays. The member of racing staff from the yard who looks after the horse awarded “World Pool Moment of the Day” will win £4,000 The winner will also be in with a chance of winning “World Pool Moment of the Year” which will be determined by a combination of scores derived from a public vote and a global expert panel and announced at the Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin in December The lucky winner will receive win a VIP trip for four to Hong Kong for either the 2024 Hong Kong Derby or 2024 FWD Champions Day.
In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the Slater Menswear Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room. Partners such as The 8th Sign, No1 by GuestHouse and the Hole in Wand are offering great prizes for all you stylish racegoers, plus it is great fun!
Visit the British Champion Series Jockey School and Goldream the retired racehorse in Clocktower Enclosure, listen out for the Ripon City Band, dance into the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Mercier Champagne for just £48 a bottle, enjoy the 360-selfie camera or taking your own selfie with the Lexus Melbourne Cup or on the Frankie Trail; whatever, it is just our pleasure to welcome you and hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

As founder and owner of Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai I am one again very proud to lend our name to The Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes today here at York. Al Basti Equiworld, is the predominant supplier of feed, bedding and supplements to the equine industry across the GCC countries.
As an owner and breeder I fully understand the importance of producing quality thoroughbreds and as such, we at Al Basti Equiworld work closely with trainers to ensure them the highest standard of service at all times and of quality products at a fair price.
I wish all the connections of each horse competing here today, the very best of luck. Sadly there can be only one winner of this year’s Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes and I look forward very much to meeting them on the winners’podium after the race.
With warmest good wishes to The York Racecourse Chairman and committee here on The Knavesmire !
Good luck to all

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION
THE SKY BET LOWTHER (GROUP 2)
Day two kicked off with a cracking renewal of the Sky Bet Lowther that saw William Haggas claim victory with Relief Rally.
Simon Munir and Isaac Souede’s juvenile has been a revelation this year. She has now won four out of her five starts and added a Group Two to her impressive Weatherbys Super Sprint victory last month. The race began with Dorothy Lawrence taking a keen hold. She pulled Danny Tudhope to the head of affairs and made sure they went a good gallop in the early stages. She was flanked either side by Beautiful Diamond and Cherry Blossom, with eventual winner Relief Rally poised to strike in behind the leader.
As they hit the two furlong pole they began to fan out over the track. Tom Marquand looked for a brief moment as though he may get stuck behind a wall or horses but managed to pull her out to begin his challenge She didn’t pick up immediately and it looked as though Beautiful Diamond and Cherry Blossom may have got away from her. But she responded excellently for pressure and the further they went the better she got.
Inside the final furlong she really hit top gear to pull away from her rivals, coming home to score by a length. Cherry Blossom battled on gamely to take second, while Symbology made up good ground on the far side to take third in a close finish for the minors
THE PERTEMPS
NETWORK YORKSHIRE OAKS (GROUP 1)
A fantastic renewal of the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks saw favourite Savethelastdance set out to make the running under Ryan Moore.
The Daughter of Galileo had already won the Juddmonte Irish Oaks, so came here with high expectations. She didn’t have much competition for the lead and set an honest gallop for the first portion of the race.
Yorkshire’s representatives filled second and third spots, with Lancashire Oaks winner Poptronic in second and Karl Burke’s filly in third. The order remained unchanged as they travelled down the back straight but turning for home Ryan Moore began to turn the taps on Savethelastdance.
She fended off the challengers for much of the straight but the eye was drawn to the smooth travelling Warm Heart under James Doyle. The apparent Ballydoyle second string had enjoyed a fantastic passage into the race and breezed past the long time leader.
She looked to have the race all sown up but down her outside came Frankie and Free Wind. The pair settled down to fight out the last half furlong with Warm Heart just pulling out enough to hold off the persistent challenge.
In winning, Aidan O’Brien joins Sir Michael Stoute as joint winning trainer of the race.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there disabled and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.
Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

GUESS WHO?
In 2020 I trained the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack winner.
WHO AM I?
Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided?
1. Foaled in 2011, my dad is Captain Gerrard and my mum is Easy To Imagine. I was a talented sprinter in my day and landed the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe in 2018.
2. My trainer hails from the North and trains plenty of horses for Bond Thoroughbred Limited. Who is he?
3. At what odds did I win the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe?
4. I won eight races during my career but how many came on the Knavesmire?
YORKS RACING CHALLENGE
1. Got To Love A Gray started Day Three of the Dante Festival in style for Middleham Park Racing and Karl Burke, but who rode her to victory?
2. Marco Botti sprang a bit of a surprise in the feature, with his runner beating home 2022 Betfred St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov, can you get the winner?
3. The second colours of Shadwell Estate struck in the next, ridden by William Buick and trained by the Gosdens, who was he?
4. Mick & David Easterby teamed up with Connor Beasley to land our penultimate contest. If you’re struggling, his name means having the right to do or obtain something.
5. The Dante Festival was bought to a close by John Butler’s charge. Look to the capital of a Persian Gulf state, for the name of the horse needs a ‘city’ adding to get the answer...
Answers to today’s puzzles can be found on page 93.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.
Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.
Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

HERE’S THE PLAN
Southern End Development
Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for both horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to continue to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus for the next capital project being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.
A planning application has been submitted for a £5 million investment to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers.
Subject to approval, work will commence following the October meeting and be open for the busy racedays in the 2024 season.
24
Architect impressions of the planned improvements
THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:
• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing stand.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston’s Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates and improved accessibility.
• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Village Bar.
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and rainwater harvesting, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge

EBOR COMMUNITY SWEEPSTAKE
The Ebor Community sweepstake is an innovative initiative which seeks to thank, celebrate and reward some of the countless thousands who have helped others in the county. Working with our partners at Sky Bet and others, we invited nominations. Out of the 100+ entries, we now have shortlisted 22 who will all be joining us on Saturday – they will each be assigned a runner in the Sky Bet Ebor and the charity or community group attached to the winning horse will receive a prize of £20,000. What is more, the second placed horse will earn £5,000 for its connected good cause, £2,000 to the third place duo and all the others benefit from a £1,000 donation.

The best will be the highest rated, Paradias here today, so will carry more weight. Look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, noting Dark Moon Rising is the only two to show both.

Combination Trifecta Bet Selections: Wooton’Sun, Intinso, Dark Moon Rising
KNAVESMIRE TIP
Paradias has posted some creditable efforts in defeat this season and has been shaping as if a return to 1m4f could unlock further improvement. However, the two three-year-olds in the race make slightly more appeal and may battle this out. BALANCE PLAY appeared to win with plenty in hand over 1m3f at Goodwood and is fancied to defy a 7lb rise now upped further in distance. Intinso is the least exposed in the field and should not be taken lightly

TheWeatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup FACT FILE:
RACE HISTORY? LUCK OF THE IRISH?
Distance
Two miles (3,200m)
Prize money
£250,000
The race started life as a Listed contest and was called the Lonsdale Stakes, run over 1m7f198y It was promoted to Group 3 level in 1998, before being renamed the Lonsdale Cup and given Group 2 status in 2004. The distance was extended by 110 yards in 2007.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
Since 1980, apart from Willie Mullins who won the race with Max Dynamite in 2015, only Aidan O’Brien (2007) and Dermot Weld (2014) have won this race
SALUTING THE CROWD?
Whilst he may not have been the highest rated, Sergeant Cecil was certainly a favourite with the Knavesmire crowds where he won four times from seven starts. He landed this prize in 2006 before following up in the following month’s Doncaster Cup, which was run here due to redevelopments on Town Moor His other victories here included the Sky Bet Ebor in 2005 and the 2007 Boodles Yorkshire Cup.
The very best stayers in Europe have their season geared around “the Cup Races” of which the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup features strongly With Classic and Gold Cup at Royal Ascot winners amongst its roll of honour, it is a race that is right up there with the best of them.
WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST SUCCESSFUL?
That honour befalls six horses who have each won the race twice - Further Flight (1992 & 1993), Double Eclipse (1995 & 1997), Celeric (1996 &1999), Persian Punch (1998 & 2001), Opinion Poll (2010 & 2011) & Stradivarius (2018, 2019, 2021). Quickthorn goes in search of joining those six today.
Sergeant Cecil
Opinion Poll

LEADING TRAINERS?
John Dunlop holds the record with five victories. Mark Johnston and David Elsworth have both won the race three times. John Gosden, saddled Stradivarius to win three renewals and inbetween his success, he won the race with Enbihaar in 2020 He now only sits one behind record holder John Dunlop and could today tie his record, should Courage Mon Ami win.
LEADING RIDER?
Frankie Dettori surpassed Pat Eddery’s mark of five in 2019 thanks to Stradivarius. The pair then went one better in 2021 and the Italian could end on a high if Courage Mon Ami were to give him a final Cup winner.
WHAT AGE GROUP HAS THE BEST RECORD?
Since 1980 four-year-olds lead the way having won the race 13 times. Five-year-olds are next best, with nine victories, while three-year-olds have seven. Stradivarius (and Fujaira Prince & The Grand Visir) became the first seven-year-old to win this since Sargeant Cecil in 2006. The great Persian Punch being the other in 2001.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
If you read your racecard carefully, you may have noticed that Weatherbys are the team behind this racecard and those at thousands of other race meetings.
As well as this specialist printing and editorial service to racing they are its civil service, keeping the administration of the sport on track. The equine insurance arm of the business supports this particular race.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
The record-breaking Mark Johnston has been a leading light for the White Rose county having won the race three times. Double Eclipse won the race twice in 1995 & 1997 with his dual Gold Cup at Royal Ascot winner Royal Rebel adding the third in 2000. Tim Easterby has also been successful when his St Leger winner Bollin Eric landed the honours in 2003. A barren year awaits the White Rose

BIG RACE TRENDS
THE WEATHERBYS HAMILTON LONSDALE CUP (BRITISH CHAMPIONS SERIES) (GROUP 2)
PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS
AGE
Although three-year-olds are eligible for the Lonsdale Cup, the Classic generation easily have the worst record in the race ,so hardly a shock that this year there are none from that age group. When it comes to positives, the most successful age group are the five-year-olds but again they are not represented. Four and six-year-olds have won two each in the last ten years. So the seven-year-old Broome looks to be up against it.
TRAINER
John Gosden has won this three times thanks to Stradivarius in 2018 and '19, while Enbihaar continued his golden streak in 2021. Courage Mon Ami flies the flag this year for Clarehaven.
BETTING
Montaly triumphed in 2017 at odds of 16/1 and whilst Millenary (12/1) and Times Up (11/1) have also provided small shocks, they have proved the exception rather than the rule as those towards the head of the market have enjoyed the most success. There have been five winning favourites in the last ten renewals and the average winning SP during the same time is around 5/1.
RECENT FORM
Stayers tend to mature as the season goes on and therefore it isn’t completely surprising to note that only five recent winners of this race had been successful on their previous start
However, only one of the last ten winners of this race had not achieved a top four finish last time which suggests that it is the form horses coming into the race that are the group to focus on. This doesn't bode well for Courage Mon Ami, Giavellotto, Broome or Nate The Great.
CLASS
Opinion Poll, Pale Mimosa, Max Dynamite and, most recently, Montaly all went on to win the Lonsdale Cup having not contested a Group race on their most recent start, but on the whole these are exceptional in that respect. Every other winner contested either a Group 1 or 2 contest on their previous outing, including last year's winner, Quickthorn.
KEY TRENDS
Trained by John & Thady Gosden
Finished in the first four last time Contested a Group 1 or 2 on their latest outing Focus on those towards the head of the betting
CONCLUSION
Courage Mon Ami failed to justify favouritism at Goodwood and will need to put that run behind him. As is shown above, horses that finish out the first four have a poor record, so there is a definite negative against his name. River Of Stars could the one to spring a surprise. If we remove Sumo Sam from the Lillie Langtry, River Of Stars would have finished first and 5 1/2 lengths in front of her nearest rival. This is a step up in trip but providing she handles it, there could be more to come. The winner looks likely to come from the front two in the market, with the marginal preference for QUICKTHORN. Last year's winner is often overlooked but after back-to-back wins, he looks as though he's found some consistency. There have been multiple previous winners of this race before and he could well become another today.

Jockey: Tom Marquand

With no Stradivarius, we had a new champion, Hughie Morrison trained Quickthorn. An uncomplicated ride, Tom Marquand set out to make all and ended up coming home a 14-length victor. An emphatic victory against some top stayers.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Bet Selections: Coltrane, Quickthorn
The percentage call looks to be the admirable COLTRANE, who was runner-up to the reoppossing Quickthorn in this contest last year, and won the Melrose here two years ago A disappointment in the Goodwood Cup behind that same rival last time out, the six-year-old is better judged on his narrow defeat at Royal Ascot behind Courage Mon Ami, with whom he is 4lb better off today. Giavellotto has strong claims as well, if bouncing back to the form of his Yorkshire Cup win here in May.

PORTRAIT OF A WINNER AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI
GIMCRACK
The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes is a famous race with a lot of tradition.
All traditions have to start somewhere so the sponsor was keen to offer a unique prize, as befits such a contest. A commission of their winner.
The winning Owner of the colt that lands the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes also has the honour of addressing Ye Anciente Fraternite of Gimcrack at the 250th Dinner this December.
252nd
On the evening they will be presented with their prize from today’s race, an original painting of their horse done by now Norfolk based artist, David “ Mouse” Cooper.
‘Mouse’ was born a naturally talented artist. Brought up in the East End of London, he left school with Grade A in art, but not much else. He went into racing as an apprentice jockey, had a few rides, and then became a work rider, and eventually yard manager. More and more he was driven to paint, and in 2005 he took the plunge and sold his house to pay his way through Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, gaining a B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art.
He has since worked as an artist and art tutor. He is widely collected, and has gained a reputation for successfully capturing the movement of horse and jockey, as well as the drama of racing. He now lives and works in a small studio in Fakenham, Norfolk
If Mouse knew which horse to paint in advance, then he could make art his hobby rather than career, sadly he will have to wait until around 3.02pm today before he knows his subject.

BIG RACE TRENDS
THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI GIMCRACK STAKES (GROUP 2)
PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS
TRAINER
Of those with runners this year, Kevin Ryan has the best record having won the race four times, courtesy of Amadeus Wolf (2005), Blaine (2012), Astaire (2013) and most recently Emaraaty Ana in 2018 He has one live chance today in Jehangeer.
RECENT FORM
A last time out victory is not essential with five of the last ten winners having had such form to their name However, it is worth noting only one horse in the last decade had finished outside of the first three on their most recent start. A negative for Emperor's Son, Power Mode and Hala Emaraaty. Interestingly, less than half of the winners in the last decade contested a Group race on their most recent outing, so don’t be shy to look beyond those already proven at this level.
CONCLUSION
DISTANCE
Six of the last ten winners of this race had previously won over this 6f trip suggesting that the proven ability to stay the trip is becoming more and more important compared to the noughties, when many had not yet graduated from five furlongs. The likes of Kylian and Emperor's Son have yet to win over six.
BETTING
In the last decade there have been only three winning favourites of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack but they all came in the last five years. Nine of those winners were sent off at single-figure odds. An average starting price of around 4/1 also suggests that it is important not to stray too far from the market leaders.
KEY TRENDS
Win over six furlongs
Finished in first three last time
Avoid outsiders in the market
A super competitive renewal of the The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes sees 10 runners go to post. Jehangeer is the logical place to start for Kevin Ryan. His record speaks for itself and Jehangeer looks more than ready to take his chance. So far he has only run in novice company, which would be a slight concern but he is proven over six furlongs. Haatem has competed in more races than most but did prove he can mix it at the top level after winning a Group 2 at Goodwood. He incurred a penalty for that success, which will make his task harder here. Kylian is one of two to have not run over five furlongs. This is a definite negative and the stats show that those stepping up to six furlongs find life difficult. JOHANNE BRAHMS looks ready to take his chance for Aidan O'Brien. The son of Siyouni has had his form boosted by Big Evs since their run in the Windsor Castle. The step back up to six furlongs is sure to suit after winning his debut over the trip and he ought to be there at the finish.

Bet Selections: Action Point, Kylian
Kylian shaped as if ready for the step up to 6f when finishing a decent third in the Molecomb over 5f at Goodwood behind Big Evs (contests the Nunthorpe at 3.35) last month and he merits respect, along with Johannes Brahms, who chased home that same rival when sent off as favourite in the Windsor Castle last time. A chance, however, is taken on JEHANGEER. He will need to improve on his recent Ayr success, but he is a full-brother Hello Youmzain who, perhaps notably, was also ridden to his first Group 1 success by James

BLOODSTOCK EROES H
COOLMORE
Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York. The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough.
The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree.
Coming up to date and Coolmore, sponsors of today’s feature race, continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Originally, a relatively small farm, owner Tim Vigors, a famous fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, began transforming it in 1968 and after going into partnership with Vincent O’Brien and Robert Sangster the three men built it up into the well-known stud farm it is today. Vigors sold his interest to O’Brien and his son-in-law John Magnier and it was Magnier who built the stud into a multi-national, multi-billion-euro operation.
On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. Coolmore’s greatest stallion, Galileo, who was sadly lost last year at the age of 23, destroyed his rivals in both the Epsom Derby and the Irish equivalent before completing an impressive hat-trick in the King George at Ascot. Since his retirement, he was Champion Sire in 12 different years having sired a staggering 91 individual Group 1 winners.
If you were to glance at his most successful progeny, you would see that he has sired many of the best racehorses in recent years, making an indelible mark on modern horse racing. These include Frankel, New Approach, Australia and Gleneagles - all now stallions in their
own right but this is by no means a coincidence.
Galileo was not only a super sire, but he made his name as a sire of sires, with an incredible 20 of his sons having sired Group 1 winners in their own right, and that trait has no doubt been passed on from his sire Sadler’s Wells. He too stood at Coolmore and comes from the Northern Dancer line, regarded as one of the most productive bloodlines in the history of thoroughbred racing.
In Galileo’s (and the recently departed Mastercraftsman’s) stead, Coolmore now stand numerous big race winners in Camelot, Churchill and more recently Saxon Warrior, St Mark’s Basilica and Blackbeard, all looking to continue their huge influence on the bloodstock world. One standout is Camelot, who now has 33 Group winners and 21 Stakes winners worldwide including Santa Barbara and Irish Champion Stakes winner Luxembourg. This afternoon’s feature race title nods at yet another whose prospects look as bright as his on-course career, Wootton Bassett.
The son of Iffraaj already has 59 Flat Stakes performers, which includes 25 Group winners. Bucanero Fuerte picked up the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh two weeks ago. While King Of Steel went desperately close in the Epsom Derby, before winning the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. He has the making to be one of the top sires around. Coolmore continue to produce Classic winners year on year and as a result continue to set a benchmark, in part thanks to the exploits of the great Galileo, who will be much missed.

FANTASY RAC S
COOLMORE NUNTHORPE (BRITISH CHAMPIONS SERIES) (GROUP 1)
1990 DAYJUR (USA)
Br c Danzig (USA) – Gold Beauty (USA) (Mr Prospector (USA))
Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum
Jockey: Willie Carson
Trainer: Major Dick Hern
Breeder: Georgia E Hofmann
Dick Hern’s flying colt Dayjur was the racing sensation of 1990. Following some early season defeats in minor company, he suddenly ‘took off’ in mid-summer, rattling off five consecutive wins in the Temple Stakes, Kings Stand Stakes, Nunthorpe, Haydock Park Sprint Cup and Prix de L’Abbaye. His York win was achieved in a breathtaking 56.16 seconds, a course record that was only broken in 2019. However, he may be best remembered for his heart-breaking defeat in America. Drawn very wide in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, he showed blistering speed to take up the running a furlong from home, but when the race appeared in the bag he inexplicably jumped a shadow 50 yards from home, handing the advantage to Safely Kept who got up by a neck.
1991 SHEIKH ALBADOU
B c Green Desert (USA) – Sanctuary (Welsh Pageant)
Owner: Hilal Salem
Jockey: Pat Eddery
Trainer: Alex Scott
Breeder: Highclere Stud Ltd
Sheikh Albadou was another brilliant Nunthorpe winner in what was a golden era for the race. He differed significantly from Dayjur in that he progressed though handicap company. He relished the sprint course at York, winning what is now known as the Reg Griffin Memorial Trophy in June 1991 by an easy four lengths, which signalled the end of his handicapping career. Ridden by Pat Eddery, just two starts later he defeated Paris House by a length and a half at York – he was defeated subsequently at Haydock and Longchamp but returned to form in a blaze of glory with a decisive Breeders Cup Sprint success at Churchill Downs, banishing the ghost of Dayjur from twelve months earlier.
2007KINGSGATE NATIVE
B c Mujadil (USA) - Native Force
Owner: Mr John Mayne
Jockey: Jimmy Quinn
Trainer: J. R. Best
Breeder: Peter McCutcheon
Kingsgate Native became only the second two-year-old in the history of this race to take the spoils, and although not particularly supported on the day, proved for trainer John Best and jockey Jimmy Quinn, more than a match for his elders. He further earns his place in the roll of honour as he clearly loved the race, having run in it no less than five times over the course of his career.
2008BORDERLESCOTT
2009
B g Compton Place Jeewan (Touching Wood (USA))
Owner: James Edgar & William Donaldson
Jockeys: Pat Cosgrove (2008), Neil Callan (2009)
Trainer: R Bastiman
Breeder: James Clark
Trained just outside Wetherby by Robin Bastiman, gritty Borderlescott followed up victory in the race in 2008 (when held at Newmarket) by winning back-to-back Coolmore Nunthorpes in 2009. This emotional victory followed earlier handicap success at York in 2005 & 2006. A late blooming star to add to our champion’s roll.
2010 SOLE
POWER
Br g Kyllachy - Demerger (USA)
Owner: Mrs S Power
Trainer: Edward Lynam
Jockey: Wayne Lordan (2010), Richard Hughes (2014)
Sole Power’s 100-1 victory in 2010 raised a few eyebrows at the time but since that break through day in August the Irish-trained gelding hasn’t looked back. Three years later he regained his Coolmore Nunthorpe Crown but this time he was the 11-4 favourite. In all, he won five Group 1 sprints in a stellar career.
2015 MECCA’S ANGEL (IRE)
2014 2016
Gr m Dark Angel (IRE) - Folga (Atraf)
Owner: David T J Metcalfe
Jockey: Paul Mulrennan
Trainer: Michael Dods
Breeder: Yeomanstown Stud & Doc Bloodstock
A striking grey mare who did an incredibly popular double in this famous race for her County Durham-based trainer Michael Dods. Her first success in the race came when she defeated the hot-favourite, American speedster, Acapulco, despite giving the filly almost two stone in weight. She followed up in 2016 in similarly comprehensive fashion, bolting clear of a field that included Group 1 July Cup winner, Limato, and dual Coolmore Nunthorpe champion, Sole Power.
2019 BATTAASH (IRE)
2020
B g Dark Angel (IRE) – Anna Law (IRE) (Lawman (FR))
Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum
Jockey: Jim Crowley
Trainer: Charles Hills
Breeder: Ballyphilip Stud
Despite being one of the fastest horses on the planet for some time, Battaash had always seen the Coolmore Nunthorpe title elude him - two defeats in the race led many to suggest that perhaps the Knavesmire wasn’t his track, or that earlier exertions in the season didn’t help him here. However, his 2019 success put to bed any concerns as this brilliant speedster secured his second Group 1 triumph in sensational fashion, bolting clear of the field and breaking Dayjur’s almost 30-year strong track record. He made it two on the bounce in 2020 with another dominant performance and booked his place among the sprinting greats.
Mecca’s Angel
There is always a healthy debate in sport about comparisons over the generations, our fantasy race below is our contribution to the chatter.
Borderlescott Sole Power

HISTORY IN THE RUNNING: KINGSGATE NATIVE
The fastest race on the Knavesmire has an impressive roll of honour, dating back over a century, to its first staging in 1922.
So many memories, the blistering pace of a track record-holder Battaash, the first female rider to win a Group One (Ya Malak under Alex Greaves), tremendous back-to back triumphs for Mecca’s Angel and Borderlescott (will Highfield Princess join that list today?); then there are the juveniles.
It is rare for the two-year-olds to even get a chance to compete against their elders at Group One level, so perhaps no real surprise that their victories have been famous (okay, rare). Only five of them have taken full advantage of the significant weight allowance, Big Evs today receives some 24lb from an older horse such as Regional.
High Treason, My Beau and Ennis offered encouragement for the plan, winning three from four, in quick time between 1953-1956. Various tilts all then came up shy until 1992 when Michael Roberts booted home, Lyric Fantasy.
So, to the only juvenile winner since, ergo the only one this millennium, Kingsgate Native. His 0.58.14 seconds of fame came in 2007, in partnership with Jimmy Quinn for trainer, John Best.
That famous afternoon was one of eight victories for Kingsgate Native, including the then Group One Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot. Still winning aged eleven as recently as 2016.
After a stint helping the young jockeys at the British Racing School, he is now enjoying a thoroughly deserved retirement at Cheveley Park Stud.

WHEN IS A T TAL PRIZE FUND
NOT A FINAL TOTAL… SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRIES
The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses.
In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for the Coolmoore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe has risen because of one supplementary entry, with Big Evs joining the field.
The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula. However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%. You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard.
The prize money on offer at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week. It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners – sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”.
For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold.
For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Juddmonte International closed for original entries on June 27th.
However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance.
The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by the owners. If you think about it terms of playing poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium.
He began his racing life at Redcar, where he was sent off 17/2. A game run saw him finish a 1/2 length second to the already tested Hala Emaraaty. With the pair pulling clear of the remainder. He was thrown straight into the deep end at Royal Ascot but more than took it in his stride to romp home by three lengths in the Listed Windsor Castle.
The son of Blue Point stepped up in class again at Goodwood to win by a neck, cementing himself as a top class juvenile. He looks more than ready to follow in some of the great juveniles to tackle this race and will be hoping to go one better than last years second, The Platinum Queen.
The other entrants at the same stage had paid £6,250 each, so this sum is transferred to the original pot of £500,000. The balance is then added to create a total prize fund of £533,750.
Original prize fund: £500,000
Supplementary entry fee: £40,000 (deducted as if it were an original entry) (£6,250)
Leaves a balance of £33,750
Final total prize fund: £533,750

A BRIEF HISTORY?
Distance
Five furlongs (1,000m)
Prize money
£533,750 (Inc supplementary fee)
The race is named after Nunthorpe, an area of York located to the north of the racecourse The first version, a low-grade selling race, was established in 1903 before the present version began in 1922 when it was won by Two Step.
THE AMERICAN CONNECTION?
The race became part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series in 2011 which means the winner of this year’s race earns an automatic invitation to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland, Kentucky on Saturday 4th November. Star US-trained filly, Acapulco ran an eye catching second in 2015 and Lady Aurelia filled the same spot in 2017, just pipped at the post by Marsha in a thriller. Golden Pal failed to make amends in 2021 for Wesley Ward
TWO-YEAR-OLDS?
The race is one of a limited number of races in which two-year-old horses can compete against their elders. The first of just five juveniles to win was High Treason in 1953, and the most recent was Kingsgate Native in 2007. After The Platinum Queen’s close second last year, Big Evs bids to go one better after being supplemented by Michael Appleby.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
It is one of only three Group 1 five furlong sprints in Europe - the others being the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp on Arc day.
FOREIGN RAIDERS?
Ireland’s Dermot Weld won the race in 1984 with Committed. Since then Aidan O’Brien has added a musical double with Stravinsky (1999) and Mozart (2001).
France’s Robert Collet won the race in 1986 with Last Tycoon as did John Hammond with Nuclear Debate in 2000 despite his non-French passport. Australia chipped in when Ortensia won for Paul Messara in 2012, giving the race a full international flavour
Aesop’s Fables and Ladies Church are the foreign contingent today.
Ortensia

LEADING TRAINER?
Ossie Bell currently holds the record with 5 victoriesHighborn II (1926, 1927), Greenore (1932), Concerto (1933) & Ipsden (1937). In the modern era Aidan O’Brien, Michael Dods, Sir Mark Prescott and Charlie Hills have each won the race twice. Tim Easterby won the race in 2021 with York specialist Winter Power. Today Charlie Hills could move to three should Equality or Khaadem oblige Likewise for Aidan O’Brien, if Aesop’s Fables were to win.
LEADING RIDER?
The late Lester Piggott holds the record with 7 victories – Right Boy (1958, 1959), Matatina (1963), Caterina (1966), Tower Walk (1969), Swing Easy (1971) & Solinus (1978). Of the current crop, Frankie Dettori is one of only two multiple winners having won the race three times - Lochsong (1993), So Factual (1995) & Lochangel (1998), while Jim Crowley’s association with Battaash puts him on two wins. Frankie has the chance to move to four on his final ride in the Nunthorpe aboard Twilight Calls.
HAT-TRICK HEAVEN
A Century since its first staging, only two horses have managed to win the Coolmore Nunthorpe three times - Tag End in 1928, 1929 & 1930 and Sharpo in 1980, 1981 & 1982.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Now in it’s fifteenth year of sponsorship, Coolmore are a worldwide breeding and racing operation.
With studs in Ireland, Australia and the United States they stand some of racings leading stallions including Camelot, Australia, Churchill and Wootton Bassett.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE
STABLES FIGURE?
Not too bad at all. In 1997, the White Rose county won the race twice! The David Barron-trained Costal Bluff and the much missed David “Dandy” Nicholls-trained Ya Malak dead-heated for first place. Nicholls then won it outright with Bahamian Pirate in 2004 before our old favourite Borderlescott won back-to-back in 2008-09 Mecca’s Angel scored for the second year in a row for Michael Dods and the North in 2016. Yorkshire have continued their fine form in recent years as Tim Easterby claimed the prize in 2021 with Winter Power. John Quinn’s superstar Highfield Princess continued her impressive season when landing the race last year and this year returns to defend her crown. Local oppopenets today come in the form of Regional for Ed Bethell, Queen Me For Kevin Ryan, Dramatised for Karl Burke and Tees Spirit for Adrian Nicholls.

BIG RACE TRENDS
THE COOLMORE WOOTTON BASSETT NUNTHORPE STAKES (GROUP 1)
PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS
AGE
Since 1958, there have only been eight winners of the Nunthorpe aged six or above suggesting that we should view their chances with a degree of scepticism, however it is worth noting that all eight of those happened in the last seventeen years, including the 2018 winner Alpha Delphini and Battaash in 2020, so perhaps it’s a trend on the move Unlike most races run on the flat, two-year-olds are allowed to mix it with their older rivals in the Nunthorpe. They have won the race five times but only twice in thirty years, courtesy of Lyric Fantasy and Kingsgate Native Big Evs flies the juvenile flag today.
KEY RACES
The best guide is Royal Ascot’s King’s Stand Stakes which has supplied eleven of the last nineteen winners of the Nunthorpe. Run over 5f, the race was upgraded to a Group 1 in 2008, and since then Borderlescott, Ortensia, Sole Power and Battaash have all taken it in en route to the Knavesmire. This year's King's Stand field is represented by the first and second, in Bradsell and Highfield Princess. As well as Twilight Calls and Dramatised.
CONCLUSION
RECENT FORM
Nine of the last ten winners achieved a top four finish on their most recent start, with Sole Power, Mecca’s Angel, Battaash (x2) and Highfield Princess the only four to get their head in front on their latest run. It’s also worth noting that all of the last ten winners had already won at least once earlier in the season, so this isn’t a race in which you want to be relying on a horse bouncing back to form.
BETTING
The Nunthorpe has been no stranger to big priced winners in recent seasons, with Sole Power (2010), Margot Did (2011), Jwala (2013) and the 2018 winner, Alpha Delphini all obliging at odds of 20/1 or bigger. Historically however, the race has shown favour towards those at the head of the market with fourteen of the last twenty winners coming from within the top four in the market.
KEY TRENDS
Ran in the King’s Stand
Finished in the first four last time
Won at least once this season
If we take the view that the King's Stand is the race to follow, this narrows down the field to four. Of those four, two currently make up the front of the market, with Dramatised sitting slightly outside at 10/1. She was well fancied at Ascot, going off 7/2 but many judges have put a line through that day and she has been given a break. While you'd need to be of the forgiving nature, she is worth another go. Bradsell is 4lb worse off than when he beat Highfield Princess in the King's Stand, so you'd have to fancy last years winner to reverse the form. She brings an extremely high level of form into the race but has been on the go a lot this season. The marginal preference would be for TWILIGHT CALLS. Fourth in the same race, Frankie takes the ride and with a clear run, he can go close for Henry Candy.

HIGHFIELD PRINCESS left her rivals for dead when scorching home in this last year and her most recent success at Goodwood proved she is still in top form. Bradsell, who narrowly edged her out in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot, is a big player but the selection can exact her revenge. Dramatised (15th) is better than what she showed on that occasion and should be suited by this speed test, while two-year-old Big Evs is another to consider closely

Fillies’ Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
One Mile Two Furlongs About 56 Yards (2,000 metres)
See page 94 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m 2f
Race Type: Heritage Handicap
Rating: 0-105
Prize Money: £100,000
Age: 3+ f&m
Stalls: Inside Rail
Our fifth race is another heritage handicap, again with a £100,000 purse, open to 3yo+ fillies and mares and is over a mile and a quarter.
All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.
As racing recognises that younger horses, aged 3, are likely to be at a different stage of development, notice how appropriately, Youngest, is one to benefit by starting with a lower weight. Listen to the Punters Panel at 1pm to hear the expert’s view.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Bet Selections: Amanzoe, Rowayeh
SISYPHUS STRENGTH has arguably posted her best efforts when tried over this distance and, having won with something in hand off 6lb lower at Newmarket 27 days ago, she is fancied to carry the momentum forward with the ground conditions likely to ideally suit. Amanzoe was beaten just two lengths in this race last year and, off 5lb higher, she can also go well on her belated return to action. Rowayeh and Lan Cinnte also need to be taken seriously despite both stepping up in distance.

ADIEU TO ANDREA ATZENI TO
A second Italian rider is set to depart the UK scene, as he heads to Hong Kong to pursue his career.
• First ride at York aged 18 years, 1 month, 18 days – during the Dante Festival of May 2009.
• Number of York rides – 320.
• All York Winners – 50 (13%).
• Ebor Festival winners – 10.
• He was the Leading Rider for the season at York in 2016.
Juddmonte International wins: 1
• In 2016, with Postponed for Roger Varian.
Sky Bet Ebor wins: 1
• In 2020, Fujairah Prince, for Roger Varian.
• Given the relative length of the careers of the two riders both with Sardinian roots, it is interesting to see that the number of winners at York over the last decade is very close; Frankie has 41 to Andrea’s 39.
• Will Capital Theory, Giavellotto, Big Evs, Rowayeh, Peace Walk or Finn’s Charm add to that tally today?

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 7f
Race Type: Maiden
Prize Money: £100,000
Age: 2
Stalls: Farside
The most valuable maiden in the UK calendar, this race is limited to 2yo horses that have yet to win a race.
All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.
By this stage of the afternoon some will have resorted to their choice of “ps”; with the pin in 2yo nursery handicaps, even the richest one in the land, having a fair record Pedigree is the second option, the more professional “p”.

The country’s richest maiden went the way of Charlie Appleby’s Desert Order, with William Buick doing the steering. The winner kept on gamely inside the final furlong to hold the fast finishing Glenfinnan by ½ length.

UNDER THE SUN found only the smart prospect Al Musmak too strong at Ascot last month and looks the one to beat in this valuable contest. Battle Cry offered a lot more encouragement when adopting more positive tactics at Down Royal in July and could also play a hand if gaining an easy lead. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt is feared most, while any market support for debutants Peace Walk or Volterra would be interesting.
