OFFICIAL RACECARD £4.00 SATURDAY JULY 29TH FEATURING THE SKY BET YORK STAKES (GROUP 2) MUSIC SHOWCASE SATURDAY 2023

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to York for what looks set to be a fabulous afternoon of top-class racing and music. With seven fascinating races and live music from Craig David after the last, I hope you thoroughly enjoy your raceday.

We are proud to bring the wonderful extended week of the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival 2023 to its finale Now in its fifteenth year, and firmly established thanks to the generous and loyal backing of our week-long sponsors, Sky Bet and Goldsborough Hall. The festival serves to showcase the best the sport has to offer in the County In Yorkshire we have nine superb racecourses, over 100 training yards, the National Racing College, Jack Berry House and Goffs Bloodstock Sales, all making for a successful racing industry in the county See if Sabrina Wiegman should have picked any of the jockeys, as they play “Paddock & Chips” at 1pm in the Parade Ring, all for the good cause of Jack Berry House

The most generous support of today’s sponsors has also helped stage a record race programme with prize money of £300,000, the £125,000 Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes as the valuable feature. Run over a mile and a quarter, racing fans will remember Twice Over carrying the silks of the late Prince Khalid Abdullah to glory in both this race and the Group One Juddmonte International. You can see by the York logo next to their name that a couple of this year’s field are already eyeing a similar summer, an unexpected winner can still supplement to join the showpiece. Successful both as a jockey and trainer, Johnny Murtagh has sent over Mashhoor from his County Kildare base, the colt is seeking a fourth consecutive win, going up a grade on each occasion. Appropriately named after his success in handicap company at Royal Ascot last month, Royal Champion, is seeking a black type win for Roger Varian.

If you are a first-time visitor, please do explore the racecourse - use the maps on p4-5 & p6-7 to guide you, or just ask any of the team in the teal blazers who will be happy to help. My tip is to stand close to the rail as the horses race past, you can feel and as well as hear the thunder of hooves.

We welcome Craig David and his band to York Racecourse and look forward to his live performance on the stage to the south of the stands. A special request from our plumbers, please use all the facilities around the course during the evening, rather than all choosing to spend a penny just before concert time! Also, please respect our neighbours and home city as you make your way out this evening.

After today, our preparations will go up a gear as we are very much looking forward to staging our flagship meeting, the Sky Bet Ebor Festival (23-26 August) where some of the best horses from around the world look set to compete over four days of top-class racing, fashion and fun.

In a further boost to the profile of this festival, we were delighted to announce that Pertemps Network are to sponsor the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks, we thank them for their support.

Thank you for your support this afternoon and during the wider Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival, I hope you have a fabulous day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there disabled and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.

Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands, as well as for Music Stage viewing - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.

Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

ESSENTIAL RACING PHRASES FOR THE BEGINNER

It could be easy to be put off by the weird and wonderful words and phrases banded around the racecourse, but in fact, its all part of the fun.

Like a tourist in a foreign country, the novice racegoer soon picks up enough of the language to get by, and then rapidly becomes fluent. The following terms will provide any newcomer, keen to enhance their language skills, with just enough of the jargon to sound like a ‘local’:

GUESS WHO?

I am backed by some top Northern stables.

WHO AM I?

Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided?

1. Born in Scotland my first win in Britain came at Southwell in 2004. I’ve tasted success on the Knavesmire multiple times and last year won the Clipper Handicap at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

2. My list of honours include no fewer than five Group One’s including a brilliant Yorkshire Oaks success. Trained in Ireland

I wore some very famous silks and there aren’t many better about than my trainer. I was only ever ridden by three different jockeys and finished third in the Juddmonte International.

The Sky Bet “Jump Jockeys Nunthorpe” Stakes

(To be ridden by Professional Jump Jockeys)

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 61-80

Prize Money: £25,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Centre

This special race is set over the same distance as the Group 1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe run at our Sky Bet Ebor Festival in August, just five furlongs. However, even though this is the shortest distance in racing, this isn’t what makes this special.

All the horses today will be ridden by professional jump jockeys including Brian Hughes who was leading Jump Jockey of the 2022/23 season. Watch from the rails as these jockeys tackle the flying five furlongs of the Knavesmire, it could be as fast as they’ll go all season.

Listen to the Punters panel at 1.25pm for some tips.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Runners: 20 SP: 25/1

Paul Midgley has a terrific record in this race, winning it for the third time in six renewals. Birkenhead enjoyed the drop the minimum and after sitting prominent, kept on well to win.

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (17-22): T Easterby (30 wins from 477 runners, 6%) runs COUNT D’ORSAY and SHOWALONG

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (9 wins from 87 runners, 10%) runs COUNT D’ORSAY and SHOWALONG

Longest Traveller: TREACHEROUS trained by Ed De Giles, Ledbury, 187 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 27th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Paul Midgley arrives with a strong team as he bids to emulate last year’s success, and STRONG JOHNSON could be the pick of them. The seven-year-old has dropped 19lb in the handicap since the turn of the year and, with recent performances leaving the suggestion a return to form is near, he could cash in on a reduced mark. Beverley scorer Sound Reason merits the utmost respect, while Sampers Seven, Treacherous and Leodis Dream are just a few others to consider

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 0-105

Prize Money: £65,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Centre

A handicap by conditions but valuable enough for high class horses that may also perform well at the higher level of races. This time for 3yo+ horses, rated up to 105 (as for the Ashes cricketers, a century denotes class). The shorter distance of only six furlongs usually makes for a tight finish.

The press selections board by the Parade Ring might provide a clue, or at least someone to blame

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: GALE FORCE MAYA

Trainer: Michael Dods

Jockey: Connor Beasley

Age/Weight: 6-9-12

Runners: 15 SP: 9/2

Gale Force Maya is a horse that likes to get on with things and sat up with the pace throughout. Was ridden to lead two furlongs from home and lead inside the final furlong. Battled to hold the late charge of Lucky Man.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A case can be made for many of these but marginal preference is for LETHAL LEVI, who was not disgraced when third off this mark at Newcastle last time The four-year-old is only 3lb higher than when a neck second over course and distance in May and he is likely to go very well once again. Magical Spirit is closely matched with the selection having finished third in the aforementioned contest at this venue, while Lucky Man and Mondammej are others with valid form claims.

THE SKY BET YORK STAKES

It was in 2006, a year after we hosted Royal Ascot, that York Racecourse announced the birth of our new Group 2, the Sky Bet York Stakes, now the sporting centrepiece of Music Showcase Saturday. It has, quite simply, gone from strength to strength since the three-year-old Best Alibi, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore, took the inaugural running, ahead of Hattan and Crocodile Dundee

The North needed a new, high summer middle distance Group race with the Scottish Derby disappearing from the programme We think that staging it here has worked on so many levels, not just the fact it is in the right place in the programme - as a “trial” for the big money Juddmonte International over course and distance, three and a half weeks later.

In fact, Twice Over, in the colours of the late Prince Khalid Abdullah, did that very double, in 2011.

Shadwell has historically been well represented in the race, winning it in 2013 with Mukhadram and in 2019 with Elarqam. This year connections are represented by Alflaila for trainer Owen Burrows. A winner of last years Sky Bet and Symphony Strensall Stakes, she has good course form and could give Shadwell a third win.

46
Twice Over

The 2019 renewal was certainly a memorable race when Elarqam kept the prize, for the only time so far, in Yorkshire for trainer Mark Johnston. The horse, who had won his Maiden on debut on the track proved far too good for the runner up that day - a certain Addeybb, now a multiple Group One winner from Berkshire to Australia.

If you need any more evidence in support of the Sky Bet York Stakes then just ask trainer David O’Meara, whose long-standing stable star, Lord Glitters, was third behind Aspetar, trained by Roger Charlton and ridden by Jason Watson two years ago. O’Meara’s Mondialiste, in the same ownership, finished second in both 2016 and 2017

And this is a rare UK pattern race Aidan O’Brien has never won. Back in 2007, when amazingly the ground rode heavy, his Eagle Mountain finished second, but winning it has eluded him... so far. While Ballydoyle is not represented this year, the Emerald Isle is represented by Mashhoor for trainer Johnny Murtagh. Could the prize return to Ireland for only the second time in the race’s history?

WHERE DOES IT FIT? SOUND FAMILIAR?

As both as a Group two and a mid summer affair, it can be a testing ground for thoroughbreds who might yet make the final step up to Group One company. Often they have looked impressive early in their careers and maybe suffered an injury or just lost their way a little. For others, it can mark a step out of handicap company before the glaring spotlight of Group One contests.

Like the feature race of the day down in Berkshire, it is a middle distance affair that lets the classic generation take on their elders. However this year there are no three-year-olds in the field.

HAVE ANY WINNERS GONE ON TO HIGHER GLORY?

Mukhadram went on to top-level success after winning here, the Coral-Eclipse his top-level breakthrough, while Sheikhzayedroad progressed to be a high-class stayer, winning the Group 1 Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine on his next start and taking Group 2 Doncaster Cup and British Champions Long Distance Cup success later on in his career. Plus the below dual success for the famous Pink & Green silks of Juddmonte Farms.

THE JUDDMONTE CONNECTION

A little out of the usual profile for this race, Twice Over is perhaps the most successful winner of the race - already a Group 1 Champion Stakes winner (twice) and Coral-Eclipse champion, the late Prince Khalid Abdullah’s brilliant colt won the Sky Bet York Stakes on the way to Juddmonte International glory for the sponsor the following month. In becoming the first thoroughbred owned by the big race sponsor to take the August Blue Riband, there is a backhanded compliment to today’s contest, as the ideal prep race Confirming that sense of testing the trip and the track, two are already entered for August and the other three could yet be supplemented.

DOES AGE MATTER?

Given that 15 of the 17 winners have either been four, five or six-year-olds, then you have to say the answer is yes... to an extent.

The first winner, Best Alibi in 2006, was the only three-year-old to have won the race, while Tullius is the oldest winner of any Group 2, taking the 2015 renewal at the grand old age of seven.

Four-year-olds did have the best record, with five wins from the 16 runnings, until Bangkok’s success in 2021 tied the five and four-year-olds with five apiece. Those aged six now have four wins after Sir Busker won last year.

With only horses aged four or five in the field, we will see one of those two age categories move into a narrow lead.

LEADING TRAINERS?

It’s been a pretty even spread in the 17 runnings of the Sky Bet York Stakes, as there are just three trainers have two wins to their name Saeed bin Suroor, who saddled both the 2007 winner, Stage Gift, and Kirklees to win in 2009. Roger Charlton, who trained 2020 winner, Aspetar, and the 2016 champion, Time Test Plus Andrew Balding, who joined them with Bangkok’s win in 2021 to go with Tullius victory in 2015. William Haggas could join them on two with My Prospero.

LEADING RIDER?

Surprisingly, this race has not yet produced a dual winner from the saddle, but with the likes of Ryan Moore, Jamie Spencer and Frankie Dettori already on the roll of honour, it’s surely only a matter of time before one of these pilots takes their second Sky Bet York Stakes title Jason Watson is the sole jockey in today’s field who could get that elusive second win.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker.

We’ve been making betting better for years.

We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and have a longestablished partnership with York Racecourse, including being the founding and consistent sponsor of today’s big race

In truth, not superbly - but that’s certainly not to say there hasn’t been any success for the White Rose County. Skipton-born William Haggas saddled Mukhadram to a 2013 victory, while Middleham’s Mark Johnston trained Elarqam to 2019 success, having also finished third as a three-year-old. Unfortunately Yorkshire isn’t represented today but there would be a small cheer for Yorkshire if William Haggas were to win the prize with My Prospero.

Alflaila was progressive as a three-year-old last year, winning his last three starts of the campaign in Listed/Group 3 company. As a course winner, Owen Burrows’ charge must be taken seriously on his return to action, but the safe play is MY PROSPERO, who gets the class drop following his fourth in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. Royal Champion won the Wolferton Stakes at the same meeting and comes here in good heart, while Mashhoor is on a roll and he beat a good yardstick in Al Riffa at the Curragh latest

Things to do: Win a race that has twice been best in the world

Thirty of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in this year’s Juddmonte International. The classic generation makes up 14 of the entries, with the Irish pair of Auguste Rodin and Paddington heading their charge. The Betfred Epsom Derby winner continued his fine season when landing the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby but could find this trip on the short side. Paddington has gone from strength to strength this year after winning the Irish 2000 Guineas before further Group One success. He is proving himself a real classy type who should relish this test. Soul Sister landed the Betfred Epsom Oaks in impressive style and has already won over course and distance in the Tattersalls Musidora If she were to win, she would be the first filly to do so since Arabian Queen in 2015. The classic generation look to be a special bunch this year but they go up against some talented older horses, whose record has been good in recent years, taking the last three renewals. The pick would be Mostahdaf, the son of Frankel decimated a good looking Prince Of Wales’s Stakes field at Royal Ascot and would be greatly respected. Via Sistina enhanced her claims at the Curragh when landing the Yulong Pretty Polly Stakes. Bay Bridge and Luxembourg have faced off multiple times this season and neither would be without a chance.

Become the fifteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred St Leger

Fourteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2023 could see number fifteen Gregory looks to be the leading hope after he won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot Emerald Isle entrant Adelaide River chased home Auguste Rodin in the Betfred Derby, this step up would be well within his reach. Ballydoyle looks well represented and Tower Of London could well end up here come the end of the season, hoping to emulate stable mate Milan, who did the famous double in 2001.

24 Thursday

Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe

The Group One Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks winner of 2023 will have big hooves to fill after Alpinista followed her win up by taking the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe. Emily UpJohn has potential to do the double for John & Thady Gosden. Stablemate Soul Sister could also come here, it would be interesting to see who Frankie rode if they both turned up. Irish Oaks winner Savethelastdance has to well respected after last weekends triumph. On Ladies Day, a star filly is set to appear.

Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.

25 Friday

Things to do: Be the fastest

The fastest race of the week, the Group One Coolmore Wotton Bassett Nunthorpe, looks to have a strong contingent of Northern runners. Last year’s winner Highfield Princess has run with a huge amount of credit this year and she loves the Knavesmire. Bradsell proved he was not just a talented juvenile when landing the King’s Stand and this was quoted as the target. Azure Blue has been the improver this season, winning the 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes impressively. If you feel the need for speed, come and see some.

Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar

Richard Hannon has won the Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack twice in the last five years and looks well represented Baheer could be the pick of the bunch for Al Shaqab Racing, who won this race in 2021 with Lusail. Great Truth shares the same last name as 2022 winner Noble Truth for Godolphin and was impressive on debut. Elite Status looks to be the leading hope for North Yorkshire and Karl Burke.

26 Saturday

Things to do: Earn a place in the Folklore of the Knavesmire

That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor. The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Scampi has been busy since his impressive win in the Jorvik. Nusret bagged himself a free ticket after winning at the Curragh. He has since got new connections after being sold for £300,000 and could continue the fine form of Irish horses. Whoever wins they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

PACKARD had shown a fair amount of promise on his first couple of starts, finishing second on debut at Goodwood before going one better at Lingfield, and the son of Mehmas, who was outclassed in the Coventry at Royal Ascot, is expected to bounce back with the addition of first-time blinkers. Ganesha went up 6lb for his nursery success at Hamilton and is likely to have more to offer, while others to note include There’s No Limit and Blue Prince.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

KALAMITY KITTY was denied a fifth consecutive win when switching to the all-weather for her latest outing and she is fancied to bounce back here. Even though she remains 5lb above her last winning mark, which came over this distance at Nottingham in May, she can get the better of last-time-out winner Baez, who races off 6lb higher. Golden Shot scored on his return to action at Ayr on Monday and cannot be taken lightly off the same mark, while Captain Kane also warrants consideration.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Race Average Time: 2m 36.77s

Racing Post Standard Time: 2m 29.10s

Course Record: 2m 25.12s by Sea Wave (18-Aug-98)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (17-22): T Easterby (30 wins from 477 runners, 6%) runs GIBSIDE

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (9 wins from 43 runners, 21%) runs DUBAI CRYSTAL

Longest Traveller: ENTHRALLMENT trained by K P De Foy, Newmarket, 163 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 27th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Enthrallment and recent C&D winner Gibside have a lot going for them and, along with the reliable Two Brothers, they warrant serious consideration. However, both Bulldog Spirit and DUBAI CRYSTAL get weight from their elder rivals and that could be a crucial factor. The last-named appeals as the stronger of the two on these terms and, given that her dam was third in the Oaks, this longer trip is likely to suit the Karl Burke-trained filly

A final handicap to solve, this time limited to only 3yo’s travelling over seven furlongs. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 80 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar

Why not watch them in Parade Ring and see if you can find any clues.

Known in racing circles as ‘the get out stakes’ it can be crucial for your restaurant choice this evening, let’s hope its caviar and not cod roe! Enjoy Craig!

Fancy That: N Tinkler won this race in 2019 and 2022. The stable runs POCKET THE PACKET and SIDNEY’S SON today. Longest Traveller: CHELSEA SQUARE trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 27th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Sunny Orange put in a much more encouraging display last time over a mile at this track, when beaten just over two lengths into fourth, and it would be no surprise to see him play a role off the same rating. However, the one with the more appealing profile is handicap-debutant CHELSEA SQUARE, who could be up to defying his opening mark if able to reproduce the form of his first career start when second at Newbury Bajan Bandit and Indian Falcon are others to watch out for.
