OFFICIAL RACECARD £4.00 FRIDAY EVENING JULY 28TH FEATURING THE BRITISH EBF 40TH ANNIVERSARY LYRIC FILLIES’ STAKES (LISTED RACE) MUSIC SHOWCASE EVENING 2023
Winning Connections Since 1983, giants of the turf like Alpinista, Dubawi, Frankel and Ouija Board have started their winning streak in a British EBF race. #GoodForRacing T: +44 1638 667960 E: info@ebfhorseracing.co.uk @BritishEBF www.ebfstallions.com
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to York for what looks set to be a super evening of racing plus music. With a record investment in prize money across seven fascinating looking races, concluding with a performance by Yorkshire’s very own The Human League, I hope you have a successful and enjoyable evening of racing and musical entertainment!
We are proud to bring the wonderful extended week of the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival 2023 to its finale today and tomorrow. Now in its fifteenth year, and firmly established thanks to the generous and loyal backing of our weeklong sponsors, Sky Bet and Goldsborough Hall, the festival serves to showcase the best the sport has to offer in the County In Yorkshire we have nine superb racecourses, over 100 training yards, the National Racing College, Jack Berry House and Goffs Bloodstock Sales, all making for a successful racing industry in the county
The most generous support of tonight’s sponsors has also helped stage a record prize money race programme of £200,000 with a Listed contest, the British EBF 40th Anniversary Lyric Fillies’ Stakes as the valuable feature. The “talking filly” of the contest is the remarkable Sparks Fly, sent up from Shropshire by David Loughnane and looking for an amazing seventh straight win. She faces nine high-quality opponents who will be keen to end that winning streak. The Yorkshire challenge may well come from Midnight Mile, who represented Richard Fahey’s Malton yard at both the Dante Festival and Royal Ascot.
If you are a first-time visitor tonight, please do explore the racecourse - use the maps on p6-7 & p8-9 to guide you, or just ask any of the team in the teal blazers who will be happy to help My tip is to stand close to the rail as the horses race past, you can feel and as well as hear the thunder of hooves.
After racing The Human League, a band who share our pride in Yorkshire as they hail from Sheffield, will take to the stage to the south of the stands. A warm welcome to Phil, Susan and Joanne For the best audio and visual experience, please make your way to the front of the stage After the concert, please respect our neighbours and home city as you make your way home
Thank you for your support tonight and during the wider Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival. We hope to welcome you back again tomorrow for racing followed by Craig David on the stage I do hope you have already got your admission for Stands Side, as we are fully booked, so why not pack a picnic and enjoy the action, both sporting and musical, from the Clocktower Enclosure. After that, our preparations will go up a gear as we are very much looking forward to staging our flagship meeting, the Sky Bet Ebor Festival (23-26 August) where some of the best horses from around the world look set to compete over four days of top-class racing, fashion and fun.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy your evening.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable event to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there disabled and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.
Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side areas and Stands, as well as for Music Stage viewing - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. TRAINERS
GUESS WHO?
Blue is the clue.
WHO AM I?
Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? There is an answer for each question.
1. I began my racing career at this meeting in 2022. I was sent off 20/1 and won by just under two lengths, with Sean Levey in the saddle. My career has gone from strength to strength and this year I’ve won two Group One over six furlongs.
2. If you’ve got me, can you name who trains me?
3. We already know I’ve won once at the knavesmire, but how many times have I won at York?
4. My two Group Ones have come at Ascot and Newmarket, does anyone know the name of them?
YORKS RACING CHALLENGE
Name tonight’s runners from these clues.
1. A phrase heard on many a Sunday league pitch
2. Material thing that can be seen and touched.
3. A British television production company founded in 1979
4. First World War catalyst
5. Roman statesman and general, defeated Hannibal in the second Punic War
6. Add spaces between the words and you get a song by The Beautiful South
7. There may be a few here who went on a Royal one in June
8. Species of Dianthus native to the Mediterranean region
9. Charles The Greats translation in Latin
10. A song by the Beach Boys, used in the 1988 film Cocktail
to today’s puzzles can be found on page 75.

1st Race 5.00
The Pearly Cow Stakes (For Gentleman Amateur Jockeys)
About One Mile (1,500 metres)
See page 76 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 61-80
Prize Money: £20,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Inside Rail
A competitive handicap for 4yo+ horses, run over one mile. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best on past performance, will be the highest rated and so will carry more weight, Phantasy Mac has that dubious honour here. Inafurthertwist, alltheridersareactuallyamateurjockeys(seehowwequaintlyrefertothemallas“Mr”).Itmeansahorsecanberelievedofsome weight, depending on the record of its rider; as Jack Callan is yet to open his account then Phantasy Mac starts with a 7lb deduction Whilst Nikova gets no weight allowance, it is because Simon Walker is probably the most successful amateur pilot around. Listen to our Punters Panel at 4.30pm to pick up further clues.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
TELE RED put a costly Newbury defeat behind him when successful at Haydock last week and as that came in an apprentices’ race, he escapes a penalty, meaning he is able to compete off 5lb lower than his revised rating. He can take full advantage, although Golden Melody is also well-in following her Ripon second and heads a list of dangers that includes in-form pair Clear Angel and Strongbowe, who fought out a Carlisle finish.

About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)
See page 76 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 7f
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 61-80
Prize Money: £20,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Far Side
Still, a handicap, so seeking equal competition once again amongst horses aged four and older, but over just seven furlongs. Those closer to the top will carry more weight; Riot is just that, carrying the heaviest burden today. Pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, look how Challet is one that carries both.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
QUEST FOR FUN (third) finished under two lengths behind Riot, with Cliffcake (fifth) on his latest outing at Doncaster and he is 3lb better off on this occasion, which could see him turn the tables on his rival. The son of Lope De Vega is now 4lb lower than his last winning mark, so he looks feasibly treated to go very close. Ascot Adventure has put in some solid displays of late and could have a say after his second at Musselburgh.

When they were bought, at a recognised auction, the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and so potential, the most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter
Any horse in higher Band racing in opposition to one from a lower Band must start by carrying two pounds in extra weight compare Loose Cannon and Overlooked. If a horse from a yet lower Band is in the same race, then the same formula applies with the Band B horse carrying two pounds more than the Band C contestant, now compare Overlooked to Alfie Boy, completing the logic it means the Band A horse (Loose Cannon) caries 4lb more than his Band C rival (Alfie Boy) To complete the field, the fillies start on lower absolute weights however the banding still applies, which is why Polly The Rocket is 2lb lower than Bella Wella; with both carrying less than the boys!
If this all sounds a bit complicated then a pin is a proven method in these races.

AUGUST CALENDAR
With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the
23 Wednesday
Things to do: Win a race that has twice been best in the world
Thirty of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in this year’s Juddmonte International. The classic generation makes up 14 of the entries, with the Irish pair of Auguste Rodin and Paddington heading their charge. The Betfred Epsom Derby winner continued his fine season when landing the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby but could find this trip on the short side. Paddington has gone from strength to strength this year after winning the Irish 2000 Guineas before further Group One success. He is proving himself a real classy type who should relish this test. Soul Sister landed the Betfred Epsom Oaks in impressive style and has already won over course and distance in the Tattersalls Musidora If she were to win, she would be the first filly to do so since Arabian Queen in 2015. The classic generation look to be a special bunch this year but they go up against some talented older horses, whose record has been good in recent years, taking the last three renewals. The pick would be Mostahdaf, the son of Frankel decimated a good looking Prince Of Wales’s Stakes field at Royal Ascot and would be greatly respected. Via Sistina enhanced her claims at the Curragh when landing the Yulong Pretty Polly Stakes. Bay Bridge and Luxembourg have faced off multiple times this season and neither would be without a chance.
Become the fifteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred St Leger
Fourteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2023 could see number fifteen Gregory looks to be the leading hope after he won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot Emerald Isle entrant Adelaide River chased home Auguste Rodin in the Betfred Derby, this step up would be well within his reach. Ballydoyle looks well represented and Tower Of London could well end up here come the end of the season, hoping to emulate stable mate Milan, who did the famous double in 2001.
24 Thursday
Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe
The Group One Yorkshire Oaks winner of 2023 will have big hooves to fill after Alpinista followed her win up by taking the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe. Emily UpJohn has potential to do the double for John & Thady Gosden. Stablemate Soul Sister could also come here, it would be interesting to see who Frankie rode if they both turned up. Irish Oaks winner Savethelastdance has to well respected after last weekends triumph On Ladies Day, a star filly is set to appear.
52
Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.
25 Friday
Things to do: Be the fastest
The fastest race of the week, the Group One Coolmore Wotton Bassett Nunthorpe, looks to have a strong contingent of Northern runners. Last year’s winner Highfield Princess has run with a huge amount of credit this year and she loves the Knavesmire. Bradsell proved he was not just a talented juvenile when landing the King’s Stand and this was quoted as the target. Azure Blue has been the improver this season, winning the 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes impressively. If you feel the need for speed, come and see some.
Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar
Richard Hannon has won the Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack twice in the last five years and looks well represented Baheer could be the pick of the bunch for Al Shaqab Racing, who won this race in 2021 with Lusail. Great Truth shares the same last name as 2022 winner Noble Truth for Godolphin and was impressive on debut. Elite Status looks to be the leading hope for North Yorkshire and Karl Burke.
26 Saturday
Things to do: Earn a place in the Folklore of the Knavesmire
That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor. The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Scampi has been busy since his impressive win in the Jorvik. Nusret bagged himself a free ticket after winning at the Curragh. He has since got new connections after being sold for £300,000 and could continue the fine form of Irish horses. Whoever wins they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
The race in which Roundhay Park (winner), Little Muddy (second), Muscika (third) and Oso Rapido (fourth) competed in here 13 days ago is a strong reference point and each is considered with similar ground conditions forecast. The last-named of that quartet appeals most on the revised terms and could provide a bit of value in his attempt at turning the form around. However, LE BEAU GARCON has also shaped up nicely in recent efforts and returning to 6f could provide the key to unlocking further success.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Race Type: Listed
Prize Money: £70,000
Age: 3+f&m
Stalls: Inside Rail
Our fifth race is a part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed (like this one), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. This race is open to 3yo+ fillies and mares only and is over a mile and a quarter
All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.
As racing recognises that younger horses, aged 3, are likely to be at a different stage of development, notice how Sparks Fly is one to benefit by starting with a lower weight. Looking for help? Then follow the racecourse tipster, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Queen For You was only narrowly denied in Listed company over a mile here in May and followed that up with a respectable effort in the Coronation at Royal Ascot. The daughter of Kingman has to be respected but marginal preference is for ELECTRIC EYES. Karl Burke’s filly created a big impression when chasing home subsequent Fillies’ Mile winner Commissioning in the Rockfel last year. Her pedigree suggests that she may be better as a three-year-old and should relish this step up in trip Others to consider are Midnight Mile, Golden Lyra and Long Ago.

Longest Traveller: BOX TO BOX trained by H Palmer, Malpas, 129 miles.
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 26th July
KNAVESMIRE TIP
SPIRIT DANCER was far from disgraced when finishing eighth from a wide draw in the John Smith’s Cup over C&D recently and this appears a suitable opportunity for the Richard Fahey-trained gelding to notch a first success of the season. Box To Box arrives in good heart and appears the main threat despite the rise in class, while Brunch is dangerous to discount and can go well if seeing out this stiffer test

If an apprentice jockey partners a horse, they can claim a reduction in weight to balance their relative lack of experience, see how Caesars Pearl benefits by 7lb as William Pyle makes his way in the saddle
If you are successful, then you can bask in the glory of picking the last York winner until at least 2.06pm tomorrow

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Kokomo is likely to be popular on her handicap debut and the first-time hood, along with a drop to the minimum distance, may bring out further improvement. The vote, though, goes to KNEBWORTH, who benefited from a change to more positive tactics when scoring at Haydock last week and he is taken to back that performance up, despite carrying a 6lb penalty. Honour Your Dreams, Betweenthesticks and Star Of Lady M are others likely to be in the mix.
