OFFICIAL RACECARD £4.00 SATURDAY, JULY 15TH JOHN SMITH’S CUP DAY 2023 FEATURING THE 64 TH JOHN SMITH’S CUP

A very warm welcome to one of the most famous days of our year, celebrating the 64th staging of the John Smith’s Cup.

Before we look forward to today, just to send congratulations to the Denham family, Tim Easterby and all involved with the record breaking Copper Knight. He recorded win number 7 in the 6th race yesterday.

Every summer since 1960, racing fans have tried to solve this ultra-competitive handicap which is the richest 10f handicap in Britain. Everyone will have their own system for finding the winner, however Course & Distance form should always be respected, so Morhaba The Champ and Spirit Dancer offer the local yards of Kevin Ryan and Richard Fahey a strong interest in proceedings.

There are two tremendous Black Type races to enjoy, the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup for stayers and the Listed John Smith’s City Walls for the sprinters. Again, a proven liking for the Knavesmire home straight will be demonstrated in the betting markets, expect to see Regional who was so impressive for another Yorkshire operation, that of Ed Bethell, when wining here in May, at the top of many lists for the feature sprint.

The support of everyone from John Smith’s, now and over all those decades, as well as your own backing today, sees the prize money this afternoon approach a record £450,000 - thank you for your support.

The entries for our big races at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival give us encouragement that many of the stars of the season, including some on show today, will return to the Knavesmire between Wednesday 23 and Saturday 26 August. Contenders in today’s races are shown by our logo next to their name All six of the runners in the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup are entered in the Sky Bet Ebor, connections will hope to win today and then land the bulk of the £500,000 on Saturday 26 August.

Today will be the first time in twenty years that photographs from the raceday have not been captured by the late Jeremy Phillips, our amazingly talented and much missed Official Photographer, as well as friend to York Racecourse. We are delighted that Jeremy’s family and close friends are with us today to celebrate his connection to the Knavesmire.

I hope you thoroughly enjoy your day and that you are able to return racing at York soon, perhaps to enjoy The Human League on Friday evening 28 July or Craig David on Saturday 29 July.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there disabled and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.

Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.

Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

ESSENTIAL RACING PHRASES FOR THE BEGINNER

It could be easy to be put off by the weird and wonderful words and phrases banded around the racecourse, but in fact, its all part of the fun.

GUESS WHO?

I ride mostly in the North for one specific trainer.

WHO AM I?

Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? There is an answer for each question.

1. Foaled in 2018, I wore the colours of King Power Racing and amassed over £300,000 in career earnings. I was a sprinter who featured regularly at York and won today’s City Wall Stakes two years ago.

2. I also won two other races on the Knavesmire, can you get either race? One of them was a Group One at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival!

3. Does anyone know how many races I won in my career? And for a bonus point, how many came in my juvenile campaign?

4. Finally, does anyone know who trained me?

YORKS RACING CHALLENGE

Name todays runners from these clues.

1. Needed to make bread and beer

2. Dark & Stormy or a daiquiri are both these

3. Sounds like a sweet Italian liqueur

4. Phrase used for speed

5. Goes great with chips and peas

6. Geralt of Rivia’s nickname in the Witcher

7. There may be a few here who went on a Royal one in June

8. First introduced to the UK by General Henry Bishop in 1661

9. A genus of mud shrimp

10. Luxury car

Answers to today’s puzzles can be found on page 77.

JEREMY PHILLIPS

(1966-2022)

A TALENTED PHOTOGRAPHER AND A HUGELY POSITIVE PERSONALITY.

Put simply, he was the most positive person you could wish to meet.

The sunny days were welcomed as part of the photographer’s eternal search for that perfect light, the wet ones offered the chance to test the latest wet weather gear ahead of a trip to the Dales.

Since becoming the Official Photographer on the Knavesmire at the start of this Millennium, Jeremy captured the elation of over 3,000 winners including world champions such as Sea The Stars or Frankel, the enjoyment of more than 6,500,000 racegoers, and the history making moments of Royal Ascot at York or the Tour de France, all whilst wearing a smile

The introduction of digital photography with its attendant archiving, providing people with access to their memories by CD, USB stick or now QR code are all testimony to an innovative purveyor of his chosen art. Though York was the only track where Jeremy followed the horses, he will be much missed by the wider racing world as well as his many friends here.

We are delighted that Clare and Emma, other family membersandfriendsareheretocelebrateJeremy’s life, this afternoon.

1st Race 2.00

The John Smith’s Racing Stakes

About One Mile (1,500 metres)

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 86-105

Prize Money: £30,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Inside Rail

The first of several competitive handicaps. Such races are designed for close competition so, the handicapper, is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. This one is for 3yo+ horses run over 1 mile, with Blue For You at the top of the scale

The high handicap rating band of 86-105 means that it will attract some smart types (like for Test cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer).

Why not visit the Parade Ring to see them up close before making your final selection.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: EILEAN DUBH

Trainer: Karl Burke

Jockey: Clifford Lee

Age/Weight: 4-9-7

Runners: 10 SP: 4/1

Eilean Dubh dwelt leaving the stalls but made good headway to track the leaders. He took up the running a furlong from home and kept on well to win.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Race Average Time: 1m 36.79s

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 35.70s

Course Record: 1m 34.35s by Croupier (18-May-23)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (17-22): W Haggas (30 wins from 190 runners, 16%) runs ARAMAIC

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (14 wins from 52 runners, 27%) runs EILEAN DUBH

Fancy That: D O’Meara won this race in 2015 and 2019. The stable runs BLUE FOR YOU and RHOSCOLYN today.

Longest Travellers: ARAMAIC trained by W Haggas; WILD LION trained by S bin Suroor; both Newmarket, 163 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 13th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Eilean Dubh meets Blue For You on identical terms as when defeating him in this 12 months ago but, though both merit the utmost respect, a chance is taken on ISLA KAI. Nigel Tinkler’s gelding finished fourth behind that pair last year, having been sent off as favourite, but he is now far better off at the weights and that could see him reverse the form. RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Listed

Prize Money: £70,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Centre

The John Smith’s City Walls is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed (like this one), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1.

At first principle, horses in such contests compete off a level weight, there is no handicap in operation. However, there are weight adjustments made for age and sex (or indeed a combination of the two) which is why the 3yo filly, Queen Me, carries 8st 5lb; the 3yo colt, Kerdos carries 8st 10lb and the 5yo colt, Chipstead shoulders 9st 1lb To make for competition, additional weight is added if a horse has previously won at this level, hence the 9st 4lb burden of Regional. If that is too brain-frying or you need someone to blame? Look at the Press Selections Board near the Winners Enclosure.

Longest Traveller: NYMPHADORA trained by A Balding, Kingsclere, 216 miles.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

REGIONAL, a winner over course and distance in May, took another step forward when landing the Achilles Stakes at Haydock last month and a repeat of that level of form will make him hard to beat here. The versatile Silky Wilkie is another key player given that he has shown some sparkling form this season. Great State appeals most from the three-year-olds and, along with the class-dropping filly Queen Me, commands respect getting weight from the older horses.

The 64th John Smith’s Cup FACT FILE:

CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY?

WHAT WAS THE LARGEST FIELD?

The supersize stalls purchased in 2019 means a field of 22 today The smallest came in 1969 & 1982 when only six participants lined up

Prize money £200,000

The John Smith’s Cup has been sponsored by John Smith’s Brewery since its inauguration in 1960, making it the longest running commercial sponsorship in flat racing.

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY MULTIPLE WINNERS?

Prominent (‘71 & ‘72) and Chaumiere (‘85 & ‘86). Prominent was also third twice. Five others have won the race and been placed: Town And Country, Halkopous, Mr Confusion, Pasternak & Flying Clarets.

DOES SEX MATTER?

Yes, as only one mare, Flying Clarets (‘08), has won the race since Nortia was victorious in only the third running of the race This year only one filly graces the field, Makinmedoit.

IS AGE IMPORTANT?

Most definitely Only 5 six-year-olds and over have been successful - Raccolto (‘63), Farm Walk (‘68), My Swanee (‘69), Educate (‘16) and 2021 winner

Johnny Drama, maybe the tide is turning? 2020 winner, Sinjaari, 2017’s victor, Ballet Concert and last year’s winner Anmaat returned to trend by boosting the 4-y-o total, while the 2018 & 2019 winners, Euchen Glen and Pivoine, struck blows for the five-year-olds.

Since 1978 the breakdown is as follows: Three-year-olds - 14 (two dead-heated in 1987!)

Four-year-olds - 19

Five-year-olds - 11

Six-year-olds - 4

Seven-year-olds - 1

LEADING TRAINERS?

Major Dick Hern won the race 6 times with Proud Chieftain, Nortia, Bold Pirate, Town And Country, Bedtime and Straight Man. Of the current crop of trainers Richard Fahey leads the way with three previous victories and the Musley Bank maestro is represented by Spirit Dancer this year William Haggas matched him after Sinjaari’s win behind closed doors in 2020, adding to Green Destiny in ‘11 and Danchai in ‘13 - Millebosc flies the Somerville Lodge flag today. Sir Michael Stoute also has two winners of the race to his name but this year is absent from the race

LEADING RIDER?

Geoff Baxter, Willie Carson and Tony Ives have each won the race three times but all are a longtime retired. Of those riding today, Andrea Atzeni could join this exclusive treble club if successful on board Sea The Casper for the Simon & Ed Crisford team. His previous win came back in 2014 when Farraj took the John Smith’s Cup, while he was previously successful in the 2013 renewal courtesy of the William Haggas-trained Danchai.

LONGEST WINNING DISTANCE?

Halkopous won by 7 lengths in 1991. The shortest followed a dead-heat between Brave Dancer and Wolsey in 1987. Both horses finished second but were placed first in the Stewards’ Room when Knockando was demoted due to interference.

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

John Smith’s, based in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire has been the highest selling ale brand in the UK since the mid-1990s.

John Smith’s Extra Smooth and Original are produced at Tadcaster, as well as a range of Heineken products including Kronenbourg 1664 and Newcastle Brown Ale. With a 3.8 million hectolitre capacity, the brewery is one of the largest in the country

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Quite well in the early years of the millennium. Richard Fahey has won it three times (Vintage Premium (02), Charlie Tokyo (07) & Flying Clarets (08)) whilst David Barron (Sirvino (09)) and Karl Burke (Achilles (99)) have also added to the tally After a lean decade, Yorkshire is well represented in this year’s contest, with Richard Fahey, Kevin Ryan and Roger Fell & Sean Murray all saddling a runner in a bid for the 64th John Smith’s Cup

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A wide-open renewal of this valuable contest but marginal preference is for SONNY LISTON, who was the first home from his group when second in the Royal Hunt Cup Off the same mark, the four-year-old could be hard to beat now upped in trip Nobel is an obvious threat following his facile Newcastle success a couple of weeks ago and he remains open to improvement on just his sixth start. It would be no surprise to see Majestic and Certain Lad go well for Jack Channon, while Long Tradition and Spirit Dancer complete the shortlist.

AUGUST CALENDAR

With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the

23 Wednesday

Things to do: Win a race that has twice been best in the world

Thirty of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in this year’s Juddmonte International. The classic generation makes up 14 of the entries, with the Irish pair of Auguste Rodin and Paddington heading their charge. The Betfred Epsom Derby winner continued his fine season when landing the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby but could find this trip on the short side. Paddington has gone from strength to strength this year after winning the Irish 2000 Guineas before further Group One success at both Royal Ascot and Sandown. Soul Sister landed the Betfred Epsom Oaks in impressive style and has already won over course and distance in the Tattersalls Musidora. If she were to win, she would be the first filly to do so since Arabian Queen in 2015. The classic generation look to be a special bunch this year but they go up against some talented older horses, whose record has been good in recent years, taking the last three renewals. The pick would be Mostahdaf, the son of Frankel decimated a good looking Prince Of Wales’s Stakes field at Royal Ascot and would be greatly respected. Via Sistina enhanced her claims at the Curragh when landing the Yulong Pretty Polly Stakes. Bay Bridge and Luxembourg have faced off multiple times this season and neither would be without a chance.

Become the fifteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred St Leger

Fourteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2023 could see number fifteen Gregory looks to be the leading hope after he won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. Emerald Isle entrant Adelaide River chased home Auguste Rodin in the Betfred Derby, this step up would be well within his reach. Ballydoyle looks well represented and Tower Of London could well end up here come the end of the season, hoping to emulate stable mate Milan, who did the famous double in 2001.

24 Thursday

Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe

The Group One Yorkshire Oaks winner of 2023 will have big hooves to fill after Alpinista followed her win up by taking the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe. Emily UpJohn has potential to do the double for John & Thady Gosden. Stablemate Soul Sister could also come here, it would be interesting to see who Frankie rode if forced to choose at what will be his final Ebor Festival. The Aidan O’Brien pair of Savethelastdance and Warm Heart both have to be well respected. On Ladies Day, a star filly is set to appear.

50

Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.

25 Friday

Things to do: Be the fastest

The fastest race of the week, the Group One Coolmore Wotton Bassett Nunthorpe, looks to have a strong contingent of Northern runners. Last year’s winner Highfield Princess has run with a huge amount of credit this year and she loves the Knavesmire. York maiden winner, Bradsell proved he was not just a talented juvenile when landing the King’s Stand and this was quoted as the target. Azure Blue has been the improver this season, winning the 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes impressively. If you feel the need for speed, come and see some.

Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar

Richard Hannon has won the Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack twice in the last five years and looks well represented Baheer could be the pick of the bunch for Al Shaqab Racing, who won this race in 2021 with Lusail. Great Truth shares the same last name as 2022 winner Noble Truth for Godolphin and was impressive on debut. Elite Status looks to be the leading hope for North Yorkshire and Karl Burke.

26 Saturday

Things to do: Earn a place in the folklore of the Knavesmire

That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Scampi has been busy since his impressive win in the Jorvik Nusret bagged himself a free ticket after winning at the Curragh. He has since got new connections after being sold for £300,000 and could continue the fine form of Irish horses. Whoever wins they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

One Mile, About Six Furlongs (2,700 metres)

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 6f

Race Type: Group Three

Prize Money: £85,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Inside Rail

Our fourth race flips back to those Pattern conditions, this time it is actually a step higher up in quality, being a Group 3. This race is open to 4yo+ horses and is over a trip of 1 mile 6 furlongs. The sole filly, One Evening, starts with a lower weight and Hamish has to carry an additional 3lb for his Group 3 success at Haydock.

Remember the winner because previous victors have gone on to contest Australia’s best-known race, the Lexus Melbourne Cup, with all six today entered in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor, set for Saturday 26 August. Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; Hamish has both initials.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A comfortable winner of the Ormonde Stakes at Chester in May, dual C&D scorer HAMISH arrives in fine form and even though he has to shoulder a 3lb penalty, he is clearly the one to beat. One Evening appears an improving filly and shaped as though she can progress again for stepping up in distance when keeping on for second over 1m4f at Pontefract. She gets the danger vote ahead of classy stayer Tashkhan, who is back on home soil following a fair fourth in France. HAMISH

A further handicap to solve, this time limited to 2yo’s and although they are the babies of the equine world their previous runs mean that they should all know what they are here to do The handicapper has judged Onigiri as the best of a still inexperienced field. More significantly, dedicated race watchers and bookmakers will be aware of them so perhaps look for a clue in the betting market.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

SCOOPS AHOY looked to be out of his depth when contesting the Windsor Castle, but this should be much more to his liking and the step up in trip could bring about further improvement. Conditions are in his favour as well and he may have too much for Onigiri, who was a taking winner on debut at Redcar before finishing down the field in the Queen Mary. Biloxi Boy is another to consider for last year’s winning connections, along with Specific Times and Ticktyboo

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 2m

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 61-80

Prize Money: £20,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Inside Rail

Those ticklish handicaps to solve keep acoming, this is over the longest distance of the day, some two-miles. As stamina is required, it is perhaps no surprise that the majority of the field are that bit older and so a little better known to punters and bookies alike. Will a four-year-old such as Sharp Distinction, surprise them today?

Looking for help? Then follow the racecourse tipster, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

ROBERT JOHNSON arrives in the form of his life, having landed a fourth victory of the season at Musselburgh earlier in the month, and Philip Kirby’s gelding may have even more to offer over staying distances. Kalamity Kitty was progressive in the early part of 2022 before a lengthy absence, but she ran with plenty of credit when returning at Kempton and is capable of further improvement. Others worth noting are Malakahna, Sharp Distinction and Single

Why not, a farewell handicap, this time for horses rated between 61 and 80 The shorter distance of only six furlongs usually makes for a tight finish.

So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see Abate and Roundhay Park are amongst those with Course and Distance Form.

If you finish the day on a winner, congratulations, why not come back and try to win some more on Friday evening 28th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Novak has been risen 10lb after a hat-trick of wins at Ayr and Hamilton and he’s one to keep on side but he may be vulnerable to some better-treated rivals, such as ABATE. Adrian Nicholls’ charge has been running consistently of late and, dropped 1lb in the ratings, he appears primed to offer another bold showing. Fantasy Master regained the winning thread at Doncaster and arrives here with a squeak, while Doctor Khan Junior is just one other who could feature in a deep race.
