OFFICIAL RACECARD £4.00 FRIDAY, JULY 14TH JULY MEETING 2023 FEATURING THE WILLIAM HILL SUMMER STAKES (GROUP 3)

A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire, where the feature race is a cracking renewal of the Group 3 William Hill Summer Stakes – I hope the weather manages to match the race title!

Eight flying fillies and two flying mares are declared for this Pattern race worth a record £85,000 Trained in the north by Michael Dods, Gale Force Maya is a Listed race winner over course & distance; another proven Pattern class performer at York, is Royal Acclaim, who heads the Newmarket challenge for handler, James Tate,

This black type race marks the great partnership between York and William Hill which stretches back many years and now celebrates that the Leeds based betting giant plays a key role in the betting experience for York racegoers by operating the on-course betting shops - do go and meet their friendly team.

The record £200,000 prize money today and the course improvements can only be achieved through your support and that of our partners and sponsors. Azets are longstanding supporters of York Racecourse as well as our local accountants and auditors – I hope their team here have a fantastic day. Coopers Marquees are also loyal supporters, they will be busy on site today. Many thanks also to season long partners Irish Thoroughbred Marketing and the European Breeders’ Fund.

Talking of records, Copper Knight bids to set a modern era one for success at York, in our sixth race today. A stalwart for Tim Easterby and owners, the Denham Family, he takes a 22nd spin down the Knavesmire in search of victory number 7.

Listen to your choice of live bands before, during and even after racing; enjoy a selection of the many catering outlets – maybe try a deep filled Yorkshire pudding from the York Kitchen Café on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand. Or stand by the finish to feel as well as hear the thunder of hooves in the final furlong. However you spend your raceday, I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful one

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there disabled and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.

Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.

Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager. Their office is located near the Theakston Bar to the South of the main Betting Ring.

GUESS WHO?

I rode the winner of the SKF Rous Selling Stakes back in June

WHO AM I?

Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? There is an answer for each question.

1. I entered my twelfth season training and have trained over 1200 winners. My career in racing began at a work rider before I became a National Hunt Jockey, mainly riding for Josh Grifford. My life as a trainer began as an assistant for Michael Jarvis before taking over the operation in 2011. I now train at Carlburg stables.

2. If you’ve managed to guess which trainer I am, can you name my first Group winner? It came back in 2011 in the Prix De l’Opera.

3. In 2022 I won the William Hill Bronte Cup, can anyone name the horse that won the race?

4. Finally, I’ve trained multiple Group winners, any guesses at to how many have been Group One winners?

The William Hill Epic Value Stakes

About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)

See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 7f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 86-105

Prize Money: £30,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Farside

A competitive handicap, for 4yo+ horses run over 7 furlongs. Such races are designed for close competition, so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated horse, Vafortino finds himself at the top and so will carry most weight. The high handicap rating band of 86-105 means that it will attract some pretty smart types. If you are looking for help, follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: SALEYMM

Saleymm finally got his day in the sun after a consistent season. He clearly had more in hand than the winning mark suggested and was always doing enough.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Another Investment takes a step up in class having ended a long losing streak with a facile C&D success and although respected, it might pay to focus on last month’s Buckingham Palace form. NORTHERN EXPRESS (third) fared best of these, with Bopedro (sixth), Vafortino (10th) and Documenting (28th) all in behind. Michael Dods’ gelding was just touched off in this contest 12 months ago, but he’s fancied to uphold Royal Ascot form and make amends this time around. NORTHERN

The William Hill Summer Stakes FACT FILE:

Distance

Six furlongs

Prize money

£85,000

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THIS RACE? HAVE ANY WINNERS SCALED EVEN GREATER HEIGHTS?

The William Hill Summer Stakes was first run in 1996 when it was a Listed contest for fillies and mares aged three and above. It was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2003.

WHO WAS THE FIRST WINNER?

Carranita won the first renewal for trainer Bryn Palling and jockey Tim Sprake.

Serious Attitude won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes during her juvenile season and after her win here went on to land another Group 1 in Canada.

The 2004 winner Tante Rose was arguably the classiest as she won the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup two months after victory here.

WHAT IS THE FASTEST TIME FOR THE RACE?

That honour falls to Ladies Are Forever, owned by the much missed Reg Bond, who recorded a time of 1min 9.18secs in 2011. She also ran the second fastest time of 1min 9.30secs in 2014.

ANY OVERSEAS-TRAINED WINNERS?

Theann became the first overseas-trained winner when landing the spoils for Aidan O’Brien and Seamie Heffernan in 2007. In 2012 the prize went to Germany when Gracia Directa was partnered to victory by Robert Winston for the Hamburg-based trainer Dominik Moser. That filly will remain the last winner based overseas as all of today’s competitors hail from British yards.

Gracia Directa The late Reg Bond with his star mare

LEADING TRAINERS?

Geoff Oldroyd won this race three times in recent years courtesy of his flying filly Ladies Are Forever. Toby Balding managed to win the race twice with Palace Affair in 2001 & 2002 whilst Richard Hannon Snr also won the race twice with Nanoushka in 1998 and Lucky Spin in 2005. Handlers with a runner today who have already won the race are William Haggas, who saddles Pink Crystal and Richard Fahey who won the race in 2010, this year he sends Marine Wave.

LEADING RIDER?

Two jockeys’ have won this race more than once. Steven Carson partnered Palace Affair to back-to-back victories. Paul Hanagan joined him in 2019 when guiding Royal Intervention to victory for Ed Walker Nine years prior he had won the race on Rose Blossom, for the Yorkshire based Richard Fahey. Today he does not have a ride, however there are two riding today who could: Daniel Tudhope and Sam James will be hoping to join them on two winners.

HAT-TRICK HEAVEN

In 2014, Ladies Are Forever achieved the quite remarkable feat of winning this race three times. Interestingly, for each of her three victories in 2011, 2013 & 2014 she was ridden by a different jockey - Silvestre De Sousa, Graham Lee & Danny Tudhope respectively She didn’t take part in 2012!

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Founded in 1934, William Hill is one of the most trusted brands in the marketplace, attracting millions of customers from around the world. They now bring that expertise to the Retail betting shops here at York.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Initially not all that well. Tim Easterby won it with Hot Tin Roof in 2000 but we had to wait until 2010 for another Yorkshire-trained winner when Rose Blossom scored for Richard Fahey. Since, then Geoff Oldroyd has boosted the tally thanks to the success of Ladies Are Forever, while Kevin Ryan’s Queen Jo Jo made it four of the last ten winners for the White Rose It falls to one of Karl Burke, Michael Dods (well he’s near enough to claim!) or Richard Fahey to defend the home county’s honour today.

Positive Irish EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

A race limited to 2-year-old fillies, over 6 furlongs.

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Novice

Prize Money: £30,000

Age: 2f

Stalls: Centre

All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.

The Punters Panel at 1.15pm might offer some clues.

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

No corresponding race last year

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 10.10s

Course Record: 1m 8.90s by Tiggy Wiggy (21-Aug-14)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (17-22): D O’Meara (24 wins from 371 runners, 6%) runs NIGHTEYES

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (14 wins from 52 runners, 27%) runs FIGHTING WREN & OUT OF LINE

Longest Traveller: SYMBOLOGY trained by C Cox, Hungerford, 209 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 12th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Narrowly denied in a decent contest on her second start at Ayr, NIGHTEYES must hold every chance if building upon that effort. She can put her experience to good use, with costly newcomer Symbology looking best placed to chase her home Looking For Queen represents a stable that has had a first-time-out winner here this season so warrants attention, while Fighting Wren, a half-sister to May Hill winner Polly Pott, is another debutant to note for the in-form Karl Burke yard

A WINTER’S TALE:

WHAT IS NEW AT YORK AT THIS SEASON?

AS WE WELCOME THOSE MAKING THEIR FIRST VISIT OF 2023, THE TEAM HAVE BEEN BUSY OVER THE WINTER MONTHS, HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR.

UPGRADED CANTERDOWN

This important strip of turf, between you and the stand side running rail, has been upgraded. The irrigation system on the whole racing surface has been further upgraded using the best in sprinkler technology from Hunter, the Californian based supplier We know, it just looks like grass but it is so much more.

NOVEMBER 2022 Starring Groundspup Ollie MAY 2023 52

THE FLYING FRANKIE

A Theakston’s backed cask ale pub, to toast the success of the Italian rider. Set at the southern end of the John Carr Terrace for County Stand racegoers and stocked with a selection of North Yorkshire brewed ales from the famous Theakston stable, it will feature Ebor IPA created especially for the Knavesmire racegoer Operating as a guest ale in this new site and in the established Theakston Bar in Grandstand and Paddock, it will retail at £5.90 for a pint.

JOHN CARR “FOOD TO GO”

Try the new York Philly sandwiches, or sit at your table on the Champagne Lawn and use the QR code to order your drinks, for delivery.

YORK KITCHEN & CAFÉ

The fresh look continues with the main racegoer restaurant in Grandstand and Paddock being given a new name, the York Kitchen & Café, a clear indication of its homemade signature dishes, such as deep filled Yorkshire Puddings.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 2f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 66-85

Prize Money: £20,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Inside Rail

Back to handicap conditions, your vital statistics are; 3yo, rated 66-85, going a mile and a quarter.

“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 85 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar

If you are seeking inspiration (or someone to blame), look at the Press Selections Board, adjacent to the Winner’s Enclosure.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

The wind operation looked to have done the trick as Asaassi made it back-to-back wins. He settled nicely and showed an excellent turn of foot to register another success.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Race Average Time: 2m 10.86s

Racing Post Standard Time: 2m 8.10s

Course Record: 2m 5.29s by Sea The Stars (18-Aug-09)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (17-22): R Fahey (32 wins from 466 runners, 7%) runs SOLAR JOE and THREE YORKSHIREMEN

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): W Haggas (14 wins from 48 runners, 29%) runs BLEAK

Longest Traveller: JOHN CHARD VC trained by C Cox, Hungerford, 209 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 12th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

An open looking contest where the unexposed three-year-olds may dominate. Lingfield scorer Bleak surely has more to come moving into handicaps and is much respected but slight preference is for EL JASOR, who won with a fair bit up his sleeve at Redcar on his handicap debut and has only gone up 5lb. Onemorenomore is also interesting on a couple of pieces of form and his mark of 69 almost certainly underestimates his potential.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

INDIANA BE was a decisive winner over an extended mile at Hamilton 10 days ago and looks to have been found a nice opportunity to follow that success up Edward Bethell’s charge does have to carry a 6lb penalty for that four-length victory but that may prove lenient. Bosc Girl has made a pleasing start to her career and she is feared most on her handicap bow, while Sunny Orange deserves a second look.

EYES ON OUR SIXTH WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER SEVEN.

The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his six races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come. He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb sixth victory came at last year’s Ebor Festival. A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet!

At the 2022 Dante Festival both the Michael Dods trained Dakota Gold and the mighty Stradivarius joined Copper Knight, the stalwart of Tim Easterby’s operation, with a record equalling sixth win, will Copper Knight go one better today?

AUGUST CALENDAR

With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the

23 Wednesday

Things to do: Win a race that has twice been best in the world

Thirty of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in this year’s Juddmonte International. The classic generation makes up 14 of the entries, with the Irish pair of Auguste Rodin and Paddington heading their charge. The Betfred Epsom Derby winner continued his fine season when landing the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby but could find this trip on the short side. Paddington has gone from strength to strength this year after winning the Irish 2000 Guineas before further Group One success at both Royal Ascot and Sandown. Soul Sister landed the Betfred Epsom Oaks in impressive style and has already won over course and distance in the Tattersalls Musidora. If she were to win, she would be the first filly to do so since Arabian Queen in 2015. The classic generation look to be a special bunch this year but they go up against some talented older horses, whose record has been good in recent years, taking the last three renewals. The pick would be Mostahdaf, the son of Frankel decimated a good looking Prince Of Wales’s Stakes field at Royal Ascot and would be greatly respected. Via Sistina enhanced her claims at the Curragh when landing the Yulong Pretty Polly Stakes. Bay Bridge and Luxembourg have faced off multiple times this season and neither would be without a chance.

Become the fifteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred St Leger

Fourteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2023 could see number fifteen Gregory looks to be the leading hope after he won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. Emerald Isle entrant Adelaide River chased home Auguste Rodin in the Betfred Derby, this step up would be well within his reach. Ballydoyle looks well represented and Tower Of London could well end up here come the end of the season, hoping to emulate stable mate Milan, who did the famous double in 2001.

24 Thursday

Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe

The Group One Yorkshire Oaks winner of 2023 will have big hooves to fill after Alpinista followed her win up by taking the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe. Emily UpJohn has potential to do the double for John & Thady Gosden. Stablemate Soul Sister could also come here, it would be interesting to see who Frankie rode if forced to choose at what will be his final Ebor Festival. The Aidan O’Brien pair of Savethelastdance and Warm Heart both have to be well respected. On Ladies Day, a star filly is set to appear.

64

Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.

25 Friday

Things to do: Be the fastest

The fastest race of the week, the Group One Coolmore Wotton Bassett Nunthorpe, looks to have a strong contingent of Northern runners. Last year’s winner Highfield Princess has run with a huge amount of credit this year and she loves the Knavesmire. York maiden winner, Bradsell proved he was not just a talented juvenile when landing the King’s Stand and this was quoted as the target. Azure Blue has been the improver this season, winning the 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes impressively. If you feel the need for speed, come and see some.

Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar

Richard Hannon has won the Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack twice in the last five years and looks well represented Baheer could be the pick of the bunch for Al Shaqab Racing, who won this race in 2021 with Lusail. Great Truth shares the same last name as 2022 winner Noble Truth for Godolphin and was impressive on debut. Elite Status looks to be the leading hope for North Yorkshire and Karl Burke.

26 Saturday

Things to do: Earn a place in the folklore of the Knavesmire

That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Scampi has been busy since his impressive win in the Jorvik Nusret bagged himself a free ticket after winning at the Curragh. He has since got new connections after being sold for £300,000 and could continue the fine form of Irish horses. Whoever wins they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Another competitive handicap for 3yo+ horses, run over five furlongs.

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 66-85

Prize Money: £20,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Centre

Remember, it’s a handicap so the best on past performance in the eyes of the handicapper will be the highest rated horse and start by carrying the most weight. However, connections can opt to use an apprentice jockey and so claim a reduction, see how Dandy Dinmont has 7lb lifted from his back as Alex Jary takes the ride.

So, pit your wits against the handicapper – as clues, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name- Copper Knight carries both as testament to his record setting six previous wins at York.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Local handler Paul Midgley boasts a strong hand, with five challengers headed by ELEGANT ERIN and Spring Is Sprung. The former gets the vote following her return effort in the Gosforth Park Cup a fortnight ago, when not getting a clear run, and the fact she has been dropped 2lb enhances her claims further. Spring Is Sprung is respected following a solid effort here on his penultimate start, while others for the shortlist include Princess Karine, Le Beau Garcon and Mereside Angel.

A final handicap but with an added dimension to the contest, in that this time, all the riders are still apprentices. Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by choosing which apprentice jockey to use; the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name Rising star, Ryan Sexton, has enough winners in the bank that Ready to Shine gets no relief; whereas the Bringbackmemories/William Pyle partnership are 5lbs better off, as the young pilot learns his trade Pick the winner and then you can bask in the glory until around 2.02pm tomorrow afternoon.

Longest Traveller: A LA FRANCAISE trained by J Goldie, Glasgow, 219 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 12th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

The Jim Goldie stable can do little wrong at present and A LA FRANCAISE looks primed to return to winning ways after a pair of solid runner-up efforts in similar company. The four-year-old remains feasibly handicapped and she may have too much for the likes of recent Beverley second Bringbackmemories, as well as Natchez Trace, who has been in fine form of late. Obsidian Knight and Sea Stone are entitled to be thereabouts as well.
