A very warm welcome to York Racecourse for our mid-summer raceday with a fascinating seven race card offering a record prize fund of £220,000, featuring the £70,000 Listed Seat Unique Ganton Stakes. Seat Unique are a valued partner, powering the hospitality elements of our website yorkracecourse.co.uk, so we are delighted to see them return to York as sponsors of this Black Type race.
The excitement continues in the Winners’ Enclosure after our second race, as the successful horse in a unique contest in York’s calendar - the SKF Rous Seller –comes under the hammer of Bernard Condren, our Goffs UK auctioneer Enjoy the spectacle but be mindful that a poorly timed scratch of the nose could see you returning home with a new four-legged friend!
We are proud to be working with the British European Breeders’ Fund in staging the 3pm race, a valuable contest for fillies over six furlongs, as both York Racecourse and the British EBF are committed advocates of Racing with Pride York Racecourse is determined to ensure racing on the Knavesmire is welcoming and inclusive for all – racegoers, visitors and colleagues alike. Our senior management team have committed to the industry Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, and we have undertaken Diversity and Inclusion training modules and have sought to ensure all departments and areas are as diverse, inclusive and welcoming as possible We are actively working within racing, alongside the Diversity in Racing Steering Group to ensure that racing’s diverse workforce can be confident, comfortable and be part of a fully inclusive community We welcome DiRSG members to York this afternoon who will use the Edwardian Weighing Room as a base for the day.
A new race to our calendar, is the valuable £30,000 Novice Fillies race at 4.10pm; the investment by Juddmonte into this series of races is most welcome, to help develop the future stars.
Today’s six-figure prize money and the course improvements can only be achieved through your support and that of our sponsors. Many thanks for your attendance and to Seat Unique, SKF, Juddmonte, Andy Thornton Hospitality Furniture, Constant Security, the European Breeders Fund, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing (if it is a Friday on the Knavesmire then our friends from The Curragh are in town) for their generous support. Talking of our sponsors, do visit the Champagne Pavilion to try some of our Andy Thornton furniture!
Since we last raced the John and Thady Gosden trained, Soul Sister, has become the eighth filly to record the Tattersalls Musidora/Betfred Oaks double Our congratulations to Lady Bamford, Frankie and all at Clarehaven Stables. Look out for York winners next week at Royal Ascot, you can see where any of today’s contestants might feature by the following the symbol next to their names in this racecard.
I hope that you are able to come racing at York again soon, perhaps even tomorrow to Macmillan Charity Raceday, just by so doing you will help raise money for this incredible cause Alternatively, you can join in the online auction which is already live, by following the link from our website, more details on p23, or perhaps try a raffle ticket as it might be your best chance of a winner!
For now, I wish you an enjoyable and successful day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there disabled and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.
Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

GUESS WHO?
Only one jockey rode a double on the equivalent June Friday last year, but who was he?
WHO AM I?
Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? There is an answer for each question.
1. Born in 1975, you’ll only see my horses race in one famous colour. My operation is based at Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket and I was appointed as retained trainer in 2013.
2. My first Group winner came in November of 2013 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita, can you name the horse?
3. With Royal Ascot just around the corner, are there any bright minds who can name my first Royal winner in 2015? Clue, it came in the King George V Stakes.
4. In 2018 the first horse to wear the royal blue to Betfred Epsom Derby glory, can anyone get the horse in question? For a bonus point can you name the other horse to wear the silks to victory?
YORKS RACING CHALLENGE
Name todays runners from these clues.
1. Kaiser Chiefs predicted one of these
2. Can be found in Scotland, now only a shadow of its former self
3. All we hear is Radio ga ga.......
4. Greek Hero

7. A fictional Realm from Middle Earth, featured in the writings of Tolkien
8. Could be cited as the reason for a few winners today!
9. A famous song by both The Dubliners and The Pogues, the tune is also used by Liverpool fans for their star centre-back, the words however differ...

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m 4f
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 61-80
Prize Money: £20,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Centre
We open with a testing handicap, remember the independent assessor who is the handicapper has given differing weights to these participants with the intention of creating an equally matched contest. Open only to horses aged four-years-old and over and intended for those whose mark is between 61-80 The spotlight falls on the jockeys as this race is limited to apprentice riders. There is a sliding scale as measured by winners; a partnership receives a 5lb benefit if the apprentice has ten of fewer previous winning rides, as would be the case for Brandon Wilkie aboard Poets Dawn. At the other end of the spectrum, Jean Baptiste gets no respite having one of the most successful apprentice riders on his back, Jonny Peate. Maybe visit the Parade Ring to assess the nerves before placing your bet.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
WESTERNESSE got off the mark in fine style at Pontefract and the form of that race has worked out well, with the second and third scoring in the interim. The step up in trip is another plus for David O’Meara’s charge and he may have too much for Thirsk winner Menelaus, as well as Solanna, whose winning sequence came to an end at Newbury last month. Course winner Poet’s Dawn and Showmedemoney can also have a say in proceedings.

Come meet our Equine Ambassador today!
Racegoers can meet former racehorse Goldream along with the New Beginnings team in the Clocktower Enclosure.
Goldream was trained by Robert Cowell in Newmarket and was a dual Group 1 winner of the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and Prix de L’Abbaye at Longchamp and he also enjoyed some successful trips here at York! He is now retired from racing and resides at the rehoming and re-training of racehorses’ charity New Beginnings.
When he is not meeting people at the races, he enjoys taking part in dressage competitions, hacking and eating carrots!

Immediately after the race the winner is offered for sale by an auction. Bidding is conducted by Bernard Condren of Goffs UK and is to start at the minimum price of £10,000 and any other horse in the race can be claimed for £15,000 If the horse has won particularly well then you may see the original owner trying to buy it back, hopefully for less than the prize money it has just collected! A BIG SPRINT HANDICAP?
BRITISH EBF SUPPORTING RACING WITH PRIDE FILLIES’ HANDICAP
This afternoon’s British EBF Supporting Racing With Pride Fillies’ Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with eight closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of? Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology.
Narrowing down the field of eight declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horses most recent form.
Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Dora Penny is rated 89 is considered 1lb “better” than Al Simmo who is rated 88. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight theoretically Dora Penny should win every time as she is rated the better horse. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field. So in this example Dora Penny carries 1lb more than Al Simmo, which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the eight runners – but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all eight runners cross the line together so how to separate them in advance?
Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into.
Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!
1) FORM
Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few who come here without having the best of recent records and so might be best ignored today; Origintail stands out as one who has struggled of late
2) THE DRAW
Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running straight. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn down the centre of the track have often held the upper hand, the counter logic being that their jockey can keep an eye on the competition on both flanks. Perhaps Radio Goo Goo can use this to her advantage.
3) DISTANCE
Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable. Pink Crystal, Al Simmo and Radio Goo Goo have all won over today’s disrance
4) GROUND
If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. Distinguished Lady is one who will enjoy a quicker surface. However Dora Penny has shown some good form on a surface that is a little softer. The ground looks set to be at the quicker end of the spectrum.
5) YORK RECORD
“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground. This time only International Girl has won won at the course and distance.
6) CONCLUSION
Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. The ground will almost certainly be on the quicker side and as such it could pay to side with bottom weight Distinguished Lady, who will look to build on a good effort at Chester, where she has a 1lb weight swing with Radio Goo Goo. Alice Haynes has been in terrific form this season and from stall five she ought to go close.

RACING WITH PRIDE
Pride Month provides an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate how far LGBT+ rights have come whilst recognising there’s still work to be done. It is also about visibly demonstrating acceptance and inclusion, while raising awareness of issues affecting the LGBT+ community.
Racing With Pride is delighted to partner with York Racecourse and the European Breeders’ Fund today in recognition of this important celebration. Members from our network and the wider LGBT+ community, together with allies, will be networking and enjoying the afternoon’s racing. The Edwardian Weighing Room is the nominated place to find a welcoming face.
Furthermore, we are very grateful to the EBF who have generously donated the sponsorship of the 3pm race today, which is named the British EBF supporting Racing With Pride Fillies Stakes.
Anyone can support Racing With Pride’s ongoing work to show that racing is a place for everyone. Whether you’re a member of the LGBT+ community or an ally who wants to show their support, we’d love to hear from you.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
PINK CRYSTAL has performed well in Listed company on her last two outings and William Haggas’ four-year-old makes plenty of appeal on her return off a break. She has run well fresh previously and would be foolish to dismiss, even though she is rated 11lb higher than when second over 5f at this track in August. Radio Goo Goo was all heart when landing a hat-trick over this distance at Chester last month and is expected to be thereabouts off 2lb higher, along with previous C&D winner International Girl.

YORK TO ASCOT LINKED IN HISTORY AND QUALITY
Getting on for twenty years may have slipped past since its visit, but the links between York and the Royal Meeting continue to be strong. Here, we look at a few highlights…
SPRINTING
History shows us: Battaash as the star of the modern era, with his final win at York coming in the Coolmore Nunthorpe in 2020 having already landed the fastest contest in Berkshire. While 2015 Group 1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner, Twilight Son, took victory in the Charity Sprint here in the same year Naval Crown won Britain’s richest maiden back in 2020 and followed that success up with a win in last year’s Platinum Jubilee Stakes.
The week ahead: York heroine Highfield Princess looks set to line up in this year’s King’s Stand and currently sits top of the market. She’s won twice on the Knavesmire and finished a good second in the 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes this year.
Noble Style’s sole entry is in the Commonwealth Cup and the 2022 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack winner will be hoping to bounce back.
Marshman is entered in both the King’s Stand and the Commonwealth Cup He finished second to the aforementioned Noble Style last year and was sent off favourite for the Clipper race at the Dante where he finished fifth.
JUVENILES
History shows us: Some of the best two-year-old’s are sent to York and the victory of Bradsell in the 2022 EBF Restricted Novice Stakes, before Archie Watson’s colt took the Group 2 Coventry Stakes proves the point. Bradsell has a supplementary entry for the Kings Stand on Tuesday
The week ahead: Got To Love A Grey will bid to follow in the footsteps of Dramatised when lining up in this years Queen Mary for Karl Burke. The Middleham Park owned grey was excellent in the Clipper EBF Marygate Stakes this May and could take some stopping. Impressive York winner, Mon Na Slieve will be hoping the Norfolk Stakes is not too high a mountain to climb.
STAYERS
History shows us: We might never see a stayer like the great Stradivarius, who claimed six races on the Knavesmire, to go with his three Gold Cups at Royal Ascot.
Stradivarius
The week ahead: A winner of the Sky Bet Melrose; Coltrane is going in search of this year’s Gold Cup
Last year’s Ascot Stakes winner also registered that success at York back in 2020 Second favourite and 2022 Betfred St Leger winner, Eldar Eldarov, was a brilliant second in the Boodles Yorkshire Cup and could prove a big danger
Highfield Princess
46
MIDDLE DISTANCE
History shows us: Sir Michael Stoute’s record is something of a sensationTelescope won the Group 2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur here before going onto Ascot glory. He managed the York to Ascot trick with Snow Sky in 2015.
The week ahead: Winner of the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb last August, the Juddmonte-owned Chaldean, will bid to add a third Group 1 win to his CV when tackling the St James’s Palace Stakes.
The 62nd John Smith’s Cup winner, Hukum, currently leads the betting for the Hardwicke Stakes for Owen Burrows and Shadwell. Close behind him is another Knavesmire winner, Pyledriver William Muir & Chris Grassicks stable star gained his win in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes in 2020 and the Berkshire victor could well come from one of the two Knavesmire winners!
PICK ME AN OUTSIDER
Royal Scotsman could be the forgotten horse in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Paul & Oliver Cole’s charge finished fifth in last years Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack but scoped badly that day. He was a good third in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and the Irish equivalent most likely came too soon. He could outrun his odds.
THE HANDICAPS
History shows us: Picking handicap winners is never easy however the Knavesmire can be an indicator. Aricebo has been a real hero for connections, running six times at York, in 2021 he gave each-way punters a nice return in the King’s Stand.
1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes eighth, Rohaan, stormed to success in the Wokingham Stakes last year It can often pay to follow those dropping out of Group company.
The week ahead: Astro King currently sits favourite in the Royal Hunt Cup market after an eye-catching run in the Sky Bet Hambleton Stakes. Impressive Reg Bond Always And Forever Handicap winner, Shining Blue, runs in the Seat Unique Ganton Stakes today. Providing he comes out of the race well, he could well take his place in the Royal Hunt Cup
THE OTHER WAY AROUND
A strong cast list but as a leading man, the mighty Frankel won the Queen Anne two months before his triumph in the Juddmonte International. Last year, we saw Baaeed follow up a win at the Royal Meeting so notebooks and iPads at the ready.

A WINTER’S TALE:
WHAT IS NEW AT YORK AT THIS SEASON?
AS WE WELCOME THOSE MAKING THEIR FIRST VISIT OF 2023, THE TEAM HAVE BEEN BUSY OVER THE WINTER MONTHS, HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR.
UPGRADED CANTERDOWN
This important strip of turf, between you and the stand side running rail, has been upgraded. The irrigation system on the whole racing surface has been further upgraded using the best in sprinkler technology from Hunter, the Californian based supplier We know, it just looks like grass but it is so much more.

THE FLYING FRANKIE
A Theakston’s backed cask ale pub, to toast the success of the Italian rider. Set at the southern end of the John Carr Terrace for County Stand racegoers and stocked with a selection of North Yorkshire brewed ales from the famous Theakston stable, it will feature Ebor IPA created especially for the Knavesmire racegoer Operating as a guest ale in this new site and in the established Theakston Bar in Grandstand and Paddock, it will retail at £5.90 for a pint.
JOHN CARR “FOOD TO GO”
Try the new York Philly sandwiches, or sit at your table on the Champagne Lawn and use the QR code to order your drinks, for delivery.
YORK KITCHEN & CAFÉ
The fresh look continues with the main racegoer restaurant in Grandstand and Paddock being given a new name, the York Kitchen & Café, a clear indication of its homemade signature dishes, such as deep filled Yorkshire Puddings.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Race Type: Listed
Prize Money: £70,000
Age: 3+
Stalls: Inside Rail
Our fourth race today is a part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, (as here), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1.
This race is open to three-year-old horses and older and is over a trip of a mile Horses of the same age and sex carry the same weight, so this is made relatively simple today as five of the contestants are older male thoroughbreds. The exception is Silver Screen who is a filly so has a lighter load. Interestingly, success at a yet higher level would result in the penalty of additional weight however it is a starting weights affair today as none have yet managed that feat An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race.

James Doyle had his hands full settling Valiant Prince in the early stages but he looked to show no signs of those early exertions in the closing stages. He was ridden clear inside the final furlong and won with quite a bit in hand.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
SHINING BLUE appeared better than ever when winning a handicap here last month and Saeed bin Suroor’s gelding looks ready to win at Listed level. El Drama is very capable on his day, as seen when finishing runner-up in the Jebel Hatta at Meydan in March, and is the obvious threat. Chichester has something to find on the ratings, but the six-year-old cannot be dismissed now eased in class.

In that quest for a competitive race this one is limited to 2-year-old fillies running over 5 furlongs, the shortest distance in British racing. It is a valuable prize for such thoroughbreds and is part of an initiative, backed by Juddmonte, to identify the stars of the future.
All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.
If any had previous success it would add weight at varying amounts depending on the grade of the race won; however all are still seeking that elusive first “W” Now the fun bit, to add a layer of competition (or for some complexity) a runner’s weight can be lowered (an allowance) based on having been bought comparatively cheaply at a recognised auction, so the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and hence potential. The most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter Any horse in from a lower Band racing in opposition to one from a higher Band benefits from an allowance, so Cool Run carries a lower weight because “better” horse such as Sues Little Angel race against her Extend the logic and fillies like Stoneacre

Bellarchi sets the standard following a career best at Carlisle earlier in the month, but she could be vulnerable to one with less experience and preference is for COOL RUN. The daughter of Profitable could not justify favouritism on debut at Thirsk, but that was an encouraging display and she is capable of better. Harvanna and Angel Shared are others with valid form claims, while Pearl Abbey is a noteworthy newcomer

About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)
See page 76 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 7f
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 71-90
Prize Money: £20,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Farside
Back to a handicap, this time for horses rated between 71 and 90 (putting a ceiling on the handicap mark further ensures competitive action and a chance for a different pool of horses). The relatively short distance of only seven furlongs usually makes for a tight finish.
So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see how Doctor Khan Junior is the one with the double consonant seal of previous success over course and distance.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
The key to this race looks to be the recent clash over C&D between Doctor Khan Junior (first) and MOTAGALLY (second), with the latter taken to come out on top this time around. Scott Dixon’s charge is 3lb better off for that one-length defeat, and he may be able to end a losing streak dating back to September 2020. Another Investment has performed well over C&D the last twice and he must enter calculations, along with the class-dropping Lord Of The Lodge

The Constant Security Handicap Stakes
One Mile, About Six Furlongs (2,700 metres)
See page 76 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m 6f
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 66-85
Prize Money: £20,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Inside Rail
To finish off with a handicap race. It is often termed “the get out stakes” and to freshen the available pool, it is open to those who are aged four-years-old and over, it is also the longest race today.
“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 85 means that though these ones are still quality performers, they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar. Looking for help? Follow the red bi plane through the card for the racecourse tipster’s recommendations.

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Fahey (6 wins from 45 runners, 13%) runs CUBANA HABANA
Longest Traveller: DIAMOND BAY trained by T Ward, Upper Lambourn, 202 miles.
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 14th June
KNAVESMIRE TIP
BALHAMBAR is reunited with Richard Kingscote, who was in the saddle when the gelding won his maiden at Chepstow last May, and having faced stiffer tests in two handicaps since, this drop in class could prove to be vital. Wor Willie was only fourth in this last year, so Diamond Bay may pose more of a threat following a promising performance over 2m at Goodwood three weeks ago
