A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the first Saturday of our 2023 season, I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day of both equine stars and sequined performers!

Today marks only the fifth staging of the Group 3 William Hill Brontë Cup with a record prize fund of over £100,000, so becoming the 40th race of our season to offer a six-figure purse Aimed at fillies and mares over a mile and three quarters, it is part of a wider plan to encourage the best female stayers to remain in training in Britain, beyond their three-year-old careers. One example would be Mimikyu, who ran at both the Ebor and St Leger Festivals last season, taking the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes for owner George Strawbridge and the Clarehaven team. The valuable prize in both monetary and prestige terms has also drawn an entry from over the Irish Sea, as Donnacha O’Brien has sent Moon Daisy.

The feature handicap is a valuable sprint over five furlongs, again generously supported by William Hill. A packed field of speedsters, including some familiar names to racing fans, none more so than Copper Knight, who shares the record as the “winningmost“ horse here with six wins to date. They’ll hurtle down the 1,000 metres in under a minute and all you have to do is unearth the winnergood luck and do refamiliarize yourself with them in the Parade Ring beforehand.

Our final race today, remembers Reg Bond, a tremendous supporter of York Racecourse and Yorkshire racing as well as being a shining light for the joy of being an owner-breeder; Docter Khan Junior carries his well-known silks earlier in the afternoon.

We proudly welcome the friends and families of The Royal Yorkshire Regiment supporting our sixth race of the day. I hope they have a fabulous raceday.

Following the last race, we look forward to the performance of Mania, The Abba Tribute from the stage between the Knavesmire and Bustardthorpe Stands. The sound system is local to the stage so for the best audio experience, do wander down in front of the stage

The team have been busy preparing for the return of a Saturday crowd, the Flying Frankie serving Theakstons Ebor IPA is a new destination on the John Carr Terrace, whilst on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand the renamed York Kitchen and Cafe serves a range of home-made goodies, including deep-filled Yorkshire Puddings. The weather looks set to play its part, so the County Stand Garden offers both fresh air and a fresh perspective of the racecourse

Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and the team from New Beginnings.

In the same vicinity is the trailer from Autism in Racing, a group that supports children with autism, in going racing. Their presence forms part of our local community connection with the racecourse, that includes the recently launched local charity partner scheme with York Foodbank, York in Recovery and Clifton Green Primary School.

I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there disabled and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.

Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.

Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

Dante Festival FLASHBACK

JOHN AND THADY GOSDEN STRIKE FIRST

The week got off to a bang as Soul Sister became the latest inmate of Clarehaven Stables to land the G3 Tattersalls Musidora. Frankie looked to be more confident than any coming into the straight and despite being caught well back, Soul Sister answered the call impressively All roads lead to the Betfred Oaks, will it be a York/Epsom double for the eighth time?

THE FOXES ANNOUNCES HIMSELF AS A BETFRED DERBY CONTENDER

The Foxes gave Andrew Balding a second win in The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante, after he stormed home under Oisin Murphy. It had been a well-run renewal of the Dante, with Oisin opting to avoid the trouble down the centre of the track and chart a much safer course down the far side. He picked up nicely once asked and took up the running inside the final furlong. He did face a few challenges but was game in winning and in doing so showed his strong hand for the Betfred Epsom Derby next weekend.

GIAVELLOTTO GAVE MARCO BOTTI A DAY TO REMEMBER ON THE KNAVESMIRE

While Giavellotto may be aimed at Flemington glory rather than a tilt at Royal Ascot, the enthusiasm of his owners was there for all to see. With the great Stradivarius at The National Stud, Marco Botti’s star wasted no time in taking up the mantle to take the Boodles Yorkshire Cup We hope to see him again on the Knavesmire for the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup in August, but know glory may await him down under

THE GOOD TIMES KEEP ON ROLLING FOR CLAREHAVEN

Free Wind made it four wins in the race for Gosden senior as she held off the persistent challenge of Rogue Millennium and Jack Mitchell. Frankie had her in a lovely position throughout the contest and she settled nicely. As they turned for home she travelled nicely through the field and after such a long lay off was always going to need the run. Connections will have been delighted at their decision to supplement her for the race.

Welcome to the first Saturday of the York 2023 season. We start with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance, seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

The best on past form will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight, Eldrickjones is the top weight in this one. Looking for help? Follow the red bi plane through the card for the racecourse tipster’s recommendations.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Albeseeingyer hasn’t looked back since winning on her second appearance in a handicap and arrives chasing a remarkable six-timer Steph Hollinshead’s filly has been hit with a 9lb hike for her latest romp at Leicester, though, and may be worth taking on with ANOTHER INVESTMENT, who finished third over C&D last week and a 2lb rise might not be enough to prevent a first success of the season. Cheekpieces may eke some improvement out of Maywake, while improving Musselburgh winner Bicep can’t be ruled out either

2nd Race 2.10

The Collective Green Energy EBF

Restricted Novice Stakes

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Novice

Prize Money: £20,000

Age: 2

Stalls: Centre

This one is limited to the babies of the game, aged just two; they don’t have much, if any track experience, hence the term “novice” All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.

Now the fun bit, all the top “band” boys start from a 9st 7lb weight, as none of them have won a race as yet, there are no additional “penalty” weights doled out. To add a layer of competition (or for some complexity) a runner’s weight can be lowered (an allowance) based on having been bought comparatively cheaply at a recognised auction, so the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and hence potential. The most expensive being categorised as those Band A horses , the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter Any horse in from a lower Band racing in opposition to one from a higher Band benefits from an allowance, so Mbappe carries a lower weight because “better” horse such as Native American races against him. That’s the colts explained, the fillies also get a benefit to give them a fair chance given the different physical development at this age, which why their sole representative, Sayidh Kingdom has the lightest burden.

All a bit much? Then go for the alternative “P” for “pin” rather than “pedigree”.

Longest Traveller: THE LINE trained by R Hannon, Marlborough, 212 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 25th May

KNAVESMIRE TIP

THE LINE did plenty wrong on his debut at Ascot, but to only be beaten three lengths was an achievement in itself and the way he finished his race suggested that he will be well suited by going up in trip The son of Caravaggio gets the vote ahead of Ticktyboo, who didn’t get the clearest of runs on his introduction over C&D. Batal Zabeel is interesting for a local stable that has had first-time-out winners here before.

Goldream was trained by Robert Cowell in Newmarket and was a dual Group 1 winner of the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and Prix de L’Abbaye at Longchamp and he also enjoyed some successful trips here at York! He is now retired from racing and resides at the rehoming and re-training of racehorses’ charity New Beginnings.

When he is not meeting people at the races, he enjoys taking part in dressage competitions, hacking and eating carrots!

COPPER KNIGHT: JOINT WINNING-MOST HORSE HERE

EYES ON OUR THIRD WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER SEVEN.

The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his six races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come.

He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb sixth victory came at last year’s Ebor Festival.

A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet!

At the 2022 Dante Festival both the Michael Dods trained Dakota Gold and the mighty Stradivarius joined Copper Knight with a record equalling sixth win, will Copper Knight go one better today?

3rd Race 2.40

The William Hill Epic Boost Stakes

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 0-105

Prize Money: £50,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Centre

We return to handicap conditions, remember the best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated horse; Korker is at the top of the weights on this occasion. Five furlongs is the shortest distance in UK racing so don’t blink as they flash home

So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look C denoting has won at York such or D meaning won over this distance. Notice how Copper Knight is one of several here to carry both, given he is the joint “winningmost” horse on the Knavesmire with six wins to date.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: ILLUSIONIST

Trainer: Grant Tuer

Jockey: Barry McHugh

Age/Weight: 5-8-12

Runners: 12 SP: 33/1

The typically competitive sprint was won by outsider Illusionist and trainer Grant Tuer Despite being slowly away, they rattled him to produce the third close finish of the day.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Korker is an obvious contender after a solid second at the Dante meeting, but he has an added 3lb now and will need to start better FINE WINE tried making all before weakening over a furlong further at Newcastle and if he can repeat that from a good draw, he may take some catching. Copper Knight loves it here and is hard to ignore, while Music Society deserves another win after an unlucky second at Thirsk.

One Mile, About Six Furlongs (2,700 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 6f

Race Type: Group Three

Prize Money: £102,000

Age: 4+f&m

Stalls: Inside Rail

The newest Pattern race at York, the Group 3 contest is a valuable prize (£102,000), as well as offering the prestige of “black type”. That desire for competition limits the race to horses of the same sex, being all females. The intention is to tempt connections into a longer career on the track for such thoroughbreds, before a second life as a broodmare. See how Mimikyu carries a higher weight than all the other runners as she has won at the yet level of Group 2, before. See what the Press think on their selections board by the Winner’s Enclosure, at least you can then blame them.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: BELIEVE IN LOVE

Trainer: Roger Varian

Jockey: Ray Dawson

Age/Weight: 5-9-2

The fourth running of the Bronte Cup saw Believe In Love travel strongly into the race after being held up out the back. She picked up impressively at the two-furlong pole to win going away.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Mimikyu will be difficult to beat if running to anywhere near the level that saw her land the Park Hill at Doncaster last September, but a chance is taken on SEA FLAWLESS. The daughter of Sea The Stars, a full-sister to the talented Al Aasy, was a comfortable winner at Beverley last month. It’s interesting that William Haggas wastes no time pitching her in at Group level, and a further step up in trip should aid her cause River Of Stars can chase them home

Another competitive handicap, this time for 3-year-olds only, rated between 61 and 80, over 7 furlongs.

Remember, it’s a handicap so the best on past performance in the eyes of the handicapper will be the highest rated horse and start by carrying the most weight, Tellus and Verdansk share, what some consider, the dubious privilege here.

Seeking a scapegoat for your poor luck, try the Punters Panel at 12.45pm in the Winners Enclosure.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A typically competitive Knavesmire handicap might suit the lightly-raced VERDANSK, whose previous form has a solid feel to it and this son of No Nay Never remains unexposed on only his second start in a handicap He was a good third at Newmarket on his reappearance and this slightly easier level could work in his favour. Recent Ayr winner Tellus is holding her form and can go well again, despite running off 4lb higher, while Five Towns, Starnberg and River Usk also warrant consideration.

YOUR ROYAL COUNTY REGIMENT

“We are The Royal Yorkshire Regiment. Brave and decisive, with over 330 years of history behind us and driven by a relentless will to succeed in everything we do: harnessing battlewinning innovation for the Army of tomorrow; and providing a highly deployable force to train and fight alongside allies and partner nations across the world, today. County-Proud. Combat-Ready.”

What a pleasure and privilege it is for the regiment to once again be part of another exciting weekend of racing at York’s Knavesmire. As Colonel of the Regiment, I am proud to announce to racegoers, that as of 5 April of this year, His Majesty King Charles III, granted the regiment ‘Royal’ status. Acutely aware that the award of this title is a singular honour, it will cement our soldiers’ pride and identity in belonging to uniquely, the only county-named Infantry regiment remaining in the British Army, committed to service and duty to our Nation. The operational challenges that we face in the future will be embraced by our soldiers and officers with the same level of professionalism, commitment and determination, we’ve always displayed, but now with an enhanced sense of pride in belonging to ‘The Royal Yorkshire Regiment’.

A lot has happened since the 2022 race meeting. Under the Army’s ‘Future Soldier’ transformation, our 1st Battalion have re-rolled to become Light Mechanised Infantry based at Catterick, and are now equipped with highly mobile Foxhound and Jackal vehicles and the full suite of infantry weapons, able at short notice to deploy rapidly to operate in any conflict, combining manoeuvre and firepower to gain battlewinning advantage. Ready for anything, anytime, anywhere, the Battalion is about to deploy on operations to Iraq and Kosovo.

Maj Gen Stenning
64

Our 2nd Battalion returned from Cyprus in 2022 and are now based in Chester. At the heart of developing, testing and challenging Infantry warfighting concepts and capabilities, they are the Army’s Next Generation Combat Team, equipped with the latest autonomous platforms, drones, information and night vision systems, working with industry, partners and allies, enabling us to win on today’s and tomorrow’s battlefields. Having established new ways for the Infantry to fight, the Battalion recently participated in the US Army Warfighting Experiment and have just completed a high-profile trial, putting all their new knowledge to the test, informing how the Army can be more lethal, more manoeuvrable and more survivable on the battlefield. Out Think – Out Fight.

Meanwhile here in Yorkshire and Teesside, our 4th Battalion have once again demonstrated the full capability of the Army Reserves by deploying on operations in Oman over Christmas and are now preparing for a major exercise in the USA in August to work alongside the New York National Guard. With a presence across our major cities and towns, both the Battalion and the Band of The Royal Yorkshire Regiment are actively recruiting now.

So, in summary your Royal County regiment is in a good place. Operationally focussed with some highly relevant combat roles in today’s modern Army, we will continue to strengthen our bonds with the county that we come from and represent, collaborating with Yorkshire businesses and organisations, and working more closely with and among the broader ‘community of Yorkshire’. I wish you all an enjoyable and successful day.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A case can be made for several of these but a chance is taken one SCEPTIC, a 260,000gns yearling who makes his handicap debut following a disappointing run in a conditions stakes at Goodwood earlier this month. He is a half-brother to Listed-placed Magical Journey and mile winner New York Angel, so the Lingfield maiden winner looks capable of bouncing back for powerful connections. Maximilian Caesar bolted up over this trip at Doncaster most recently and is feared off 9lb higher, while Dubai Jemila and Saxon King add further spice to the race.

We finish the day that bookmakers might have loved, with a final handicap, this time for horses rated between 86 and 105. Like in the game of cricket a score of 100 denotes a good performer As a further nuance to a handicap, connections can choose to use an apprentice jockey and then benefit from a reduction in weight (called a claim) that varies depending on the previous success of the rider In this contest, Pierre-Louis Jarmin takes 3il off the back of Lord Of The Lodge

The biggest burden goes to Shining Blue If you want to take a chance on one, before tonight’s concert, maybe deploy your favourite colours.
