A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the first day of our 2023 season. It is such a pleasure for everyone at York to be able to welcome you back to enjoy the Dante Festival.

York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport and to attracting the best horses to race for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is £1.425m, representing a six-figure increase on last year, with every race worth £25,000 or more. All eight of the Pattern grade contests see an increase on their 2022 values, so putting them at record levels. Let’s hope we see a similar quality of winners to last year when star horses Highfield Princess, Emily Upjohn, Desert Crown and Stradivarius won the feature races.

The first of those quality thoroughbreds will go to post in today’s seven races, headlined by a pair of Pattern contests. The Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora where eight blue blood fillies look to stake their claim on Betfred Oaks glory. Seven fillies have completed the York-Epsom double since 1961, with Emily Upjohn being agonisingly close to number eight last year Her York victory gave the Clarehaven operation of the Gosdens an incredible fifth win in eight years, Soul Sister, flies their flag today. The reigning champion trainer on the Knavesmire, Karl Burke, will be hoping Novakai can shine in defence of that title.

If the fillies are about showing potential, then the sprinters in the Group Two 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stakes are about proven class and speed. Established Group One star and defending champion, Highfield Princess, from the John Quinn operation faces Creative Force and Emaraaty Ana as fellow scorers at the highest level. A much talked about contender and definitely the longest traveller of the week, is The Astrologist, trained at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, the raider from down under looked a real speedball when second on Dubai World Cup night in the feature sprint.

There is further local representation in the contest with Art Power and Marshman also batting for Yorkshire.

The winner of our opening race today can reserve itself a berth in those supersize stalls for the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 26 August, as it is one of three Sky Bet backed “Race to the Ebor” contests at York, with a fourth being held at The Curragh (see page 14 for details).

All that before we mention a potential record- breaker in our second race If Dakota Gold comes into the Winner’s Enclosure to meet connections, it will be for the seventh time, so would make him the “winningmost” horse on the Knavesmire.

The prize funds for these races can only be achieved through the support of our sponsors. Many thanks to Tattersalls, Clipper, Churchill Tyres, Sky Bet, the European Breeders’ Fund and Conundrum HR Consulting for their valuable backing.

The team have been busy preparing for your return, the Flying Frankie serving Theakstons Ebor IPA is a new destination on the John Carr Terrace, whilst on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand the renamed York Kitchen and Café serves a range of home-made goodies, including deep-filled Yorkshire Puddings.

Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and the team from New Beginnings.

This week Racing Welfare are leading the sport through Mental Health Awareness Week, we are proud to play our part. The new “sunflower” benches spread around the course offer a chance for a quiet moment of reflection.

A final thought and prayer goes out to Stuey Weston, a regular at this meeting who loved his “get out stakes kitty”. His friends celebrate the man, whose presence today they will miss, by our last race

I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there disabled and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.

Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

This season sees the latest staging of the famous race as part of a an extensive partnership with Leeds-based Sky Bet.

York Racecourse and its longstanding partner are committed to both cherishing and yet developing the track’s most famous race.

Today sees the next instalment of a series entitled the “Race To The Ebor” which includes four high-class staying contests, including a brand new Irish race which joined in the series last year. The four races nominated for the “Race To The Ebor” are:

Sky Bet Melrose

Handicap (3YO only)

York - 1m 6f

Saturday 20 August 2022

Sky Bet Jorvik Handicap (4YO+)

York - 1m 4f

Wednesday 17 May 2023

Sky Bet Stakes (Handicap, 4YO+)

The Curragh - 1m 6f

Wednesday 7 June 2023

Sky Bet Grand Cup (Listed, 4YO+)

York - 1m 6f

Saturday 17 June 2023

Sky Bet Ebor (Handicap 4YO+)

York - 1m 6f

Saturday 26 August 2023

The winners of the four races above will be guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2023 provided they are entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2023 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money.

In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process.

To complement this initiative

York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration. After his success in the Sky Bet Melrose last August, we know that Soulcombe already has a “golden ticket”. However as he now campaigns down under for Chris Waller, his ante post price is high!

GUESS WHO?

Can you name this trainer who was successful on day one of the Dante Festival 2022?

WHO AM I?

Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? There is an answer for each question.

1. In 2022 I hit the milestone of training 1000 winners. My racing operation is four miles from Darlington and this season I have already tasted Listed success.

2. If you’ve guessed me, can you name the seven-year-old mare at my stable that has won three times over the Knavesmire, including the Listed Garrowby Stakes.

3. Sired by Deep Impact, I ran at York twice and registered a 100% record. I won at this meeting in 2021, beating a Sir Michael Stoute trained filly and was sent off 14/1. I also claimed three Group One’s. For some bonus points, can you name the two races I won over the Knavesmire?

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T

There are various points and different ways to bet here at York.

1. Place a bet with the tote. 2.

go to the betting ring. 3.

William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower.

PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER

Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS

If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.

Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

The Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Jorvik Stakes

One Mile About Four Furlongs (2,400 metres)

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 4f

Race Type: Handicap

Prize Money: £50,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Centre

Welcome back. We start with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition, with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance, seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best will be the highest rated horse; Lucander being the highest rated horse in this race.

The winner is guaranteed a start in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor itself (subject to key criteria), hence the unusual title, see the dedicated page in this racecard to learn more.

Use the Press Selections Board by the Winners Enclosure to guide you or give you someone to blame.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Race Average Time: 2m 32.93s

Racing Post Standard Time: 2m 29.10s

Course Record: 2m 25.12s by Sea Wave (18-Aug-98)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (17-22): W Haggas (32 wins from 193 runners, 17%) runs LA YAKEL and TASMAN BAY

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): A Balding (10 wins from 63 runners, 16%) runs SCAMPI and TYPEWRITER

Fancy That: W Haggas won this race in 2021 and 2022. The stable runs LA YAKEL and TASMAN BAY today.

Sir M Stoute won this race in 2013 and 2014 The stable runs REAL DREAM today.

Longest Traveller: SAM COOKE trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 15th May

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A wide-open contest but the lightly-raced REAL DREAM gets the vote. Sir Michael Stoute’s gelding won with authority on his return to action at Kempton earlier in the month and a 5lb rise may not prevent him from completing a hat-trick. Sam Cooke displayed a willing attitude last season and may not be far away if resuming in the same heart, while cases can also be made for the unexposed La Yakel and Crystal Delight.

DAKOTA GOLD: JOINT WINNING-MOST HORSE HERE

EYES ON OUR SECOND RACE WHEN DAKOTA GOLD, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER SEVEN.

On a summer evening back in July 2017, as most attention was switching to the concert stage where Jess Glynne fans gathered, a shrewd bunch of connections kept their eyes firmly on the track as Dakota Gold justified the favourite’s tag when delivering win number one on the Knavesmire.

The coming years would see the Michael Dods trained bay gelding rise up through the handicap marks, with increasingly high-profile successes. The six-figure prize in the Sky Bet Dash, then the opening contest of the Ebor Festival 2019, followed by a Group 2 triumph in the Bengough Stakes which had been rerouted to York from a soggy Ascot.

His most recent victory came in the equivalent race last year at the Dante Festival. Owned throughout by Doug Graham and members of the Davison family, you sense his story has not yet been fully written.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 86-105

Prize Money: £40,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Farside

Again a handicap, this time for horses rated between 86 and 105. Like in the game of cricket a rating of 100 denotes a good performer

The shorter distance of only six furlongs usually makes for a tight finish. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see Dakota Gold is one such, after all he has won here six times already!

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Dakota Gold showed no signs of slowing when bringing up his sixth career win on the Knavesmire. Always prominent, he had to be pushed out to the line but was always doing enough.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

LUCKY MAN is having his first start of the season since finishing down the field behind Summerghand at Lingfield in November, and he can be forgiven that effort as it was at the end of a long season. He has shown a clear liking for this C&D having never finished outside the first two home in three starts. The unexposed Khanjar merits the utmost respect and is sure to be fit and ready to roll on his seasonal reappearance, along with last year’s first and second Dakota Gold and Makanah.

SECOND RACE PRESENTATION & BEST TURNED OUT

The 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stakes

FACT FILE:

Where does the race name come from? WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

This is one of the first major six furlong sprints so provides clues as to where the top honours will end up in the speed division.

Distance

Six furlongs (1,207 metres)

Prize money

£145,000

The 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stakes, named in honour of Prince George, Duke of York (later King George V.) was introduced at York’s August meeting in 1895 Back then it was a middle-distance race for three-year-olds before it morphed into a six furlong handicap in May 1950, became a conditions race in 1968, achieved Group 3 status in 1971 and was promoted to a Group 2 in 2003.

FIRST MODERN ERA WINNER?

Joe Mercer partnered the John Sutcliffe-trained Hard Water to victory in 1968.

DO THESE HORSES FEATURE ELSEWHERE AFTERWARDS?

The Roll of Honour includes Indian Ridge (1989), Royal Applause (1997), Invincible Spirit (2002) and Monsieur Bond (2004) all of which became top-class stallions after their racing days were over 2021 winner Starman went onto achieve more Group One glory The most recent winner, Highfield Princess, went on to triple Group One success, making John Quinn’s flagbearer one of the very best to win the race.

DOES LIGHTNING STRIKE TWICE?

Handsome Sailor is the only horse to win the race twice. He took the prize in 1987 and 1988. Add in a Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes and a triumph in the Prix de l’Abbaye confirms that he was a smart sort. In his hat-trick bid he could finish only 9th. Therefore history suggests that Highfield Princess has it all to do in defending her title.

Handsome Sailor Joe Mercer

LEADING TRAINER?

Barry Hills has seven victories - Noble Mark (1974), Flash n’ Thunder (1980), Jester (1982), Handsome Sailor (1987, 1988), Royal Applause (1997) and Prime Defender (2010). Rather appropriately, his son, Charles, saddled the 2016 victor, Magical Memory. So no pressure on Khaadem!!

LEADING RIDER?

Michael Hills, Lester Piggott and Steve Cauthen each won the race four times. Of the current crop, Frankie Dettori has won it three times, most recently on Magical Memory in the 2016 renewal, whilst Jim Crowley would earn his own treble were Khaadem to emerge victorious today.

KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY

Michael Hills, another son of Barry, rode four winners whilst Gianfranco Dettori won aboard Three Legs (not literally) in 1976 so his son Frankie has built the family connection when winning on Lend A Hand (2000), Delegator (2011) and Magical Memory (2016).

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Combining the business sense and love of racing of Yorkshire Owner, Steve Parkin, this new name to racing will combine breeding, ownership and a new twist on syndicate membership

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Venture Capitalist gave David “Dandy” Nicholls his first Group winner in 1996 whilst Bollin Joanne (1998) and Pipalong (2001) gave Malton trainer Tim Easterby a brace of victories. Bryan Smart scored with Monsieur Bond in 2004 and in 2007 Amadeus Wolf provided the first of Kevin Ryan’s two winners in the race – Tiddliwinks (2012) being the other so far. Highfield Princess gave Yorkshire another success for local trainer John Quinn before coming back later in the season to win the Coolmore Wotton Bassett Nunthorpe! Today Yorkshire is represented by Highfield Princess, Art Power, Emaraaty Ana and Marshman.

BIG RACE TRENDS

THE 1895 DUKE OF YORK CLIPPER STAKES (GROUP 2)

PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS

INTRODUCTION

The 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes is a sprint of the highest quality and there are some real speedsters on its roll of honour. As is always the case, this year’s renewal looks well up to standard with three Group One winners in the field.

AGE

The successes of Starman, Invincible Army and Harry Angel in the last five years have solidified the dominance of four-year-old’s in recent years. A win for Highfield Princess evened things up for the older horses over a ten-year-period, who will prevail today?

GROUP FORM

With the exception of Tiddliwinks in 2012, the previous ten winners had all won at Listed level or better earlier in their careers and therefore it would seem fruitless supporting a runner that is yet to prove themselves. However, only Society Rock, Maarek and Harry Angel had already won a Group 1 prior to winning here.

TRAINER FORM

No trainer has asserted their dominance over this race from a winning perspective, but Kevin Ryan does tend to run a good one here and this year is represented by Emaraaty Ana. John Quinn has been represented by El Astronaute in recent years and this year he sends last years victor Highfield Princess.

RECENT FORM

Race fitness has proved an important factor in recent seasons, 2021 winner Starman defied that trend when winning here after a 207 day break. Invincible Army had a run prior to winning in 2019 but like Starman the 2018 winner Harry Angel also won off a break. Highfield Princess had raced four times prior to winning this last season.

BETTING

The fact that Harry Angel and Invincible Army were only the fourth and fifth winning favourites in the last 13 years suggests that this is a race in which the market leader can be opposed. Equally, there have also been some shock results during the same period; including Glass Office’s victory at 40/1 and Tiddliwinks’ success at 25/1, so if you do fancy a horse at a big-price don’t be put off, especially if they match the other trends.

KEY TRENDS

CONCLUSION

Kevin Ryan has a good record in the race, so Group One Winning Emaraaty Ana must carry a fair amount of respect. Khaadem is looking to give Charlie Hills his second win in the last decade and has booked hattrick seeking Jim Crowley. Australian raider The Astrologist brings an intriguing unknown quantity for trainers Leon and Troy Corstens. With all this being said, HIGHFIELD PRINCESS would be the pick for the 2022 winning combination, John Quinn and Jason Hart. Her form went from strength-to-strength last year and we know how much she loves the Knavesmire! At six, she would have the age barrier to overcome but it has been done before in 2013 by Society Rock and she’s the one to beat.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Highfield Princess enjoyed a marvellous campaign last term and the three-time Group 1 winner demands the utmost respect. The six-year-old is yet to win after a lengthy absence, however, and it may pay to side with the race-fit CREATIVE FORCE. Despite failing to justify favouritism on his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket, the son of Dubawi made amends in emphatic style when comprehensively getting the better of his rivals at Haydock. He gets the nod despite a quick turnaround, while Emaraaty Ana may mount a bold bid too.

FANTASY RAC S

TATTERSALLS MUSIDORA

There is always a healthy debate in sport about comparisons over the generations, our fantasy race below is our contribution to the chatter.

1988 DIMINUENDO (USA)

Ch f Diesis Cacti (USA) (Tom Rolfe)

Owner: Sheikh Mohammed Trainer: H. R. A. Cecil

Jockey: Steve Cauthen

Unraced as a two-year-old, victory in the 1988 Tattersalls Musidora was the first of Diminuendo’s career following second and third place finishes in the Nell Gwyn and 1000 Guineas respectively at Newmarket. The four-length Musidora win when 8/13 favourite showed her to be smart and she fulfilled the potential by going on to win the Oaks at Epsom and the Irish Oaks. Returning to the Knavesmire in the August, she ran out an impressive five-length winner of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks before being pipped by just a length in the St Leger at Doncaster.

1989 SNOW BRIDE (USA)

Ch f Blushing Groom (FR) Awaasif (CAN) (Snow Knight)

Owner: Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum Trainer: H. R. A. Cecil

Jockey: Steve Cauthen

A third successive Tattersalls Musidora success for Henry Cecil and Steve Cauthen. Unbeaten in two races as a juvenile, Snow Bride lost her 100% record when fifth in the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket. Yet 12 days later she restored her reputation when running on strongly to get the better of Pilot by a length-and-a-half before adding the Epsom Oaks to her CV when inheriting victory after Ailysa, the first past the post, was disqualified. She signed off her racing career by winning the Princess Royal Stakes at Ascot.

1990 IN THE GROOVE

B f Night Shift (USA) Pine Ridge (High Top)

Owner: Brian Cooper

Jockey: Ray Cochrane

Trainer: D. R. C. Elsworth

Already a winner on the Knavesmire thanks to a two-year-old maiden success, In The Groove won the 1990 Tattersalls Musidora under a fine Ray Cochrane ride. Just 11 days later they landed the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Unsuccessful at Epsom, further Group One glory came on her return to York when winning the Juddmonte International. Further top drawer triumphs in a Champion Stakes at Newmarket as well as in the Coronation Cup at Epsom the following season marked her as one of the very best.

1995 PURE GRAIN

B f Polish Precedent (USA) Mill Line (Mill Reef (USA))

Owner: R Barnett

Jockey: John Reid

Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute

A game winner by a length of the 1995 renewal, Pure Grain went on to win the Darley Irish Oaks at The Curragh in impressive fashion. That victory had followed a podium finish in at Epsom. An impressive Group 1 double was completed when she returned to the Knavesmire to land the Darley Yorkshire Oaks in thrilling fashion in that August.

1997 REAMS OF VERSE (USA)

Ch f Nureyev (USA) Modena (USA) (Roberto (USA))

Owner: K Abdulla

Jockey: Kieren Fallon

Trainer: H. R. A. Cecil

Three times a winner as a two-year-old, including in the Fillies’ Mile at Ascot, she bounced back from finishing sixth in the 1,000 Guineas in the most eye-catching of fashion, coming home at York some 11 lengths clear under Kieren Fallon. Odds on for the Epsom Classic as a result, she duly delivered.

2002 ISLINGTON (IRE)

B f Sadler’s Wells (USA) Hellenic (Darshaan)

Owner: Lord Weinstock

Jockey: Kieren Fallon

Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute

Victory in the 2002 Tattersalls Musidora set Islington on the path to four Group 1 wins in a glittering career. Success in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and back here on the Knavesmire in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks in her Classic season. Narrowly beaten at the highest level in her subsequent starts, she had to wait a year for her next win as she made it back-to-back successes in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks. A well-deserved Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mares Turf was to be the fourth top honour of her career.

2009 SARISKA

B f Pivotal Maycocks Bay (Muhtarram (USA))

Owner: Lady Bamford

Jockey: Jamie Spencer

Trainer: M. L. W. Bell

The first of a hat-trick of wins came in clear-cut fashion in the 2009 Tattersalls Musidora, Sariska staying on strongly for a three and three-quarter length success. When following up in the Investec Oaks, she ended a lean spell for York winners in the Epsom Classic. The Darley Irish Oaks completed Sariska’s hat-trick before she finished second in a thrilling battle with Dar Re Mi for the Darley Yorkshire Oaks back here on the Knavesmire.

2021 SNOWFALL

B f Deep Impact (JPN) - Best In The World (IRE))

Owner: Mr D. Smith, Mrs J. Magnier, Mr M. Tabor Trainer: Aidan O’Brien

Jockey: Ryan Moore

A subsequent emphatic three-time Group One winner, Snowfall was a runaway winner of the 2021 Tattersalls Musidora. She went onto achieve glory in the Epsom Oaks, the first since Sariska, before going back to Ireland where she won the Irish equivalent, returning in August to add the Darley backed Yorkshire version.

Musidora Stakes FACT FILE:

WHO WAS MUSIDORA? THE AUSSIE ANGLE?

Musidora was part of five Classic victories for the partnership of Charles Elsey and Edgar Britt.

A lightweight rider who hailed from Sydney. A brace of Darley Yorkshire Oaks triumphs were also on a successful CV Britt passed away in his native land, in January 2016, aged 103.

Distance

One mile, two furlongs and 56 yards (2,050 metres)

Prize money

£130,000

Musidora, named after Jeanne Roques who was a famous French star in the silent movies, was a real superstar of the late 1940s. She was trained at Malton by the legendary Captain Charles Elsey to win the 1949 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Epsom Oaks just a few weeks later.

WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

As one of the first Pattern races for three-year-old fillies, it lets connections see how their fillies have matured over the winter

FIRST WINNER?

Ambergris, trained by Harry Wragg and ridden by Lester Piggott, she was the 4-9 favourite sparking a five year winning run for ‘The Jolly’.

WHY A CLASSIC TRIAL?

Simples - since 1961, seven winners have won the Betfred Oaks - Noblesse (1963), Bireme (1980), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), Reams Of Verse (1997), Sariska (2009) & Snowfall (2021). A number of near misses, notably Emily Upjohn, the 2022 winner who came so close on the Downs.

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH?

Irish-trained fillies have won eight times overall. Paddy Prendergast secured a hat-trick from 1963 to 1965 with Noblesse, Ela Marita and Arctic Melody. Vincent O’Brien won it with Where You Lead in 1973 whilst Jim Bolger has also won it three times courtesy of Condessa (1981), Give Thanks (1983) and Lush Lashes (2008). Aidan O’Brien had his first win in the race back in 2021 with Snowfall. The County Tipperary yard is represented today by Lambada.

Lush Lashes Lester Piggott

LEADING TRAINERS?

The late Sir Henry Cecil won an astonishing nine times –Fatah Flare (1985), Indian Skimmer (1987), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), All At Sea (1992), Magnificient Style (1996), Reams Of Verse (1997), Passage Of Time (2007) and Aviate (2010). Sir Michael Stoute has eight victories meaning Infinite Cosmos could draw the legends level.

LEADING RIDER?

then benefitted as retained jockey to Sir Henry Cecil between 1985-89 so rode five winners. Last year Frankie Dettori took his tally to six victories with Emily Upjohn and is now the leading rider. - Bahr (1998), Punctilious (2004) and the winners of three of the last six renewals; Star Of Seville (2015), So Mi Dar (2016), Shutter Speed (2017) & Emily Upjohn (2022). Today he rides Soul Sister.

HAT-TRICK HEAVEN

Garnie Bougoure rode a hat-trick of winners from 1963 to 1965 and Brian Taylor followed suit from 1966 to 1968. Twenty years later Steve Cauthen achieved the same remarkable treble from 1987 to 1989. Frankie Dettori became the latest treble-riding jockey in 2017 - could Soul Sister make it seven winners?

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Tattersalls are Europe’s largest Bloodstock Auctioneers and the world’s oldest, dating back to 1766. From Park Paddocks in Newmarket, Tattersalls offers more than 5,000 thoroughbreds each year The nine different sales include market leaders in every category. Today will see another page written in the history of this significant contest.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Since the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes was first run in 1961 only one Yorkshire stable has managed to win it. That accolade goes to Middleham’s Mark Johnston who saddled Secret History to victory in 2005 and then Rose Of Kildare to success in 2020’s renewal. Middleham’s Karl Burke has the very promising Novakai, with the Malton challenge offered by Midnight Mile from Richard Fahey’s yard

The late Sir Henry Cecil Frankie Dettori rider Cauthen, was Last Feather (1982), Richard Fahey

BIG RACE TRENDS

THE TATTERSALLS MUSIDORA STAKES (GROUP 3)

PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS

INTRODUCTION

The Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes is regarded as a trial for next month’s Betfred Oaks at Epsom but is also a valuable prize in its own right, boasting a six-figure prize fund. Since this race was first run in 1961 seven fillies have gone on to win both events – Noblesse was the first in 1963 and the most recent was 2021 superstar Snowfall.

TRAINER FORM

John Gosden is the most successful trainer with a runner this year. He won this race for the first time in 1993 courtesy of Marillette and has since added six further victories. In fact, those six successes have all come since 2011, with his most recent victory coming courtesy of Emily Upjohn just last year, today he has outsider Soul Sister.

GROUP FORM

2021 winner Snowfall continued the trend of having run in a Group race before turning up here. She ran in no fewer than four Group races as a juvenile. Whereas 2022 Emily Upjohn went against that trend when winning last year’s renewal, having only ever run in Novice Stakes. In this years field only Midnight Mile, Novakai and Sea Of Roses have contested a Group race.

TWO-YEAR-OLD FORM

Past winners in recent seasons had mostly been competing at a high level during their juvenile season. Both Rose Of Kildare and Snowfall had remarkably busy two-year-old campaigns, with the former having five wins from eleven starts. In the last five years, four winners had at least three runs at two, the only two horses to buck that trend were the 2017 winner Shutter Speed and last years winner Emily Upjohn. Midnight Mile and Novakai are the only two to run more than twice at two.

RECENT FORM

Having good recent form has been key in previous years. Four of the last five winners arrived here after already having a run that season. Sea Of Roses, Soul Sister, Lambada, Infinite Cosmos and Gather Ye Rosebuds have all had a run.

BETTING

The Tattersalls Musidora has often been a race for punters but more recently there has been a shift away from favourites. Five of the last ten winners were favourites however only one of the last five was sent off favourite.

CONCLUSION

It’s rare to see a Gosden runner at such a big price in the Musidora and despite a below-par effort at Newbury on her return, there is surely more to come from Soul Sister. Infinite Cosmos routed a good-looking field at Newmarket on return but a lack of a run in Group company would be a concern. Sea Of Roses finished second on her first start this season in the Prix Penelope at Saint-Cloud, she ticks the Group run but will need to improve again. The preference here would be with Karl Burke’s NOVAKAI, ridden by Clifford Lee. She’s got plenty of experience as a two-year-old and has a similar profile to 2021 winner Snowfall.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Second to the smart Arrest on her debut, Sea Of Roses put her experience to good use when beating INFINITE COSMOS (second) at Doncaster next time out. That said, the latter made no mistake when recording a facile success at Newmarket on her return to action 12 days ago and Sir Michael Stoute’s filly, who holds some lofty entries, can rubber-stamp her Classic credentials with victory here. Others to note include Novakai, Midnight Mile and Gather Ye Rosebuds, who won impressively at Newbury on her debut.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 7f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 76-95

Prize Money: £25,000

Age: 3

Stalls: Farside

Back to competitive handicap conditions, this time for horses rated between 76 and 95, remember those nearest that ceiling are considered the best and will carry more weight.

“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and here the upper rating of 95 means that the spotlight will not be stolen by a proven superstar.

Looking for help? Follow the red bi plane through the card for the racecourse tipster’s recommendations. Also, remember the heaviest burden goes to the horse with the highest rating, Chuzzlewit carries that burden in this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Novice

Prize Money: £30,000

Age: 2

Stalls: Farside

Our penultimate race is for 2yo colts, geldings and fillies that are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that the horses sire is registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe

It’s the first season for all these runners meaning level weights for runners of the same sex, though fillies start with less than the boys, although none are taking that chance today.

In tipping terms, it is a choice of the “Ps”, pedigree or pin.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

MASHADI rallied well when just denied on his first start at Newmarket earlier in the month and Richard Hannon’s colt, who is the only runner in the field who has racecourse experience, wouldn’t need to improve much from that effort to go one better The Caribbean warrants plenty of respect for Aidan O’Brien, being a half-brother to a Phoenix Stakes winner, while others to note in what is likely to be an informative contest include Brave Empire and Kylian.

Stuey Weston & Friends “Getting Out” Stakes

Our friend Stuart loved the Dante meeting beyond all others. Wherever he was working in the world, he’d always make sure he made the pilgrimage back to the Knavesmire to enjoy the action with his mates.

The first day is always the best, because everybody comes to it fresh and full of hope, and the over-indulgence of the previous days isn’t casting its shadow on proceedings. A day with far too much time spent on the champagne lawn would precede the highlight of the afternoon – the communal bet on the lucky last, or the “Getting Out Stakes” as we liked to call it.

This year Stuart isn’t with us, having died a fortnight ago at just 49-years old, but his friends are here to raise a glass, have a bet and send him off

If you’d like to join in, look around you, and enjoy the precious time you get with your friends. Think about picking one horse in his race and all backing it so you can cheer it home together But raise a glass to one another, and feel privileged to be here at the best racecourse in the world in one of the most beautiful cities.

Stuart loved it, and so do we.

From all Stuart’s friends and colleagues

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Many hold solid chances, not least Kihavah, who won this race off 2lb lower last year and is respected with conditions to suit. Heathen runs for an in-form yard and is also high on the shortlist, despite a below-par effort on testing ground at Thirsk last time, while Vega Sicilia appeals based on consistency shown since being upped in distance. Nevertheless, it might be worth chancing STRAWMAN on these terms, given he is back on a winning mark and has more to offer over this trip STRAWMAN
