Welcome to York Racecourse for the final raceday of our 2022 season; a day with seven fascinating races offering a prize fund of over £275,000, including a six-figure purse for the Coral Sprint Trophy. I hope you have a successful and thoroughly enjoyable day.
It has been a tremendous year on the track so far, with some of the very best racehorses and jockeys in the world having competed at York and gone on to further glory elsewhere. Whether it was Alpinista winning the Yorkshire Oaks and then the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for Kirsten Rausing and the trainerjockey combination of Sir Mark Prescott and Luke Morris; or local heroine Highfield Princess landing a Group One sprint double in Yorkshire and Ireland for John Quinn, Jason Hart and owner, John Fairley. You can read a little more about York form as it tracks into autumn on p32-33. The likes of Baaeed, Trawlerman and Quickthorn carry strong Knavesmire runs into QIPCO British Champions Day next weekend. We will then hope to see York form taken to the Breeders’ Cup, Melbourne Cup and possibly Japan Cup in the weeks ahead. I hope you have enjoyed an action-packed season to date and thank you for your support.
Our feature sponsor, Coral, have been associated with this day since 1979 and the £100,000 Coral Sprint Trophy is the flagship race The sprint looks to offer a fascinating clash between emerging stars of this category such as Lucky man for trainer Richard Spencer, against some proven horses. Defending champion, Volatile Analyst returns as does two-time winner, Gulliver, however none have more experience of the York Winner’s Enclosure than Dakota Gold, the joint winningmost horse here in the modern era with six visits to date.
Yesterday, the continuing Yorkshire led battle for the Charles Clinkard Top Trainer Championship at York saw Skipton born William Haggas make a late charge for glory after two winners. It’s still all to play for in tomorrow’s finale. See p38-39 for more details on this season’s competition.
Today will also see the conclusion of the season long contest to be top jockey at York in the Living North-sponsored race. After yesterday Danny Tudhope sits nicely clear of his two rivals who are riding at Newmarket. It will take something special for one of the chasing pack to catch him. Please see p14 for the story so far.
Remember if you want to follow all the action from Newmarket and York, then use the Racing TV zone on the Roberto lawn, a bar, good food to go, seating and the channel on a giant screen. In the same locality you will find the Coral Virtual Racing Stage, free to enter for all standside racegoers.
There are so many positive stories from the 2022 season, both on and off the track, we will celebrate one of them just after the second race when Lady Halifax, President of Macmillan Cancer Support, will receive a cheque for £487,677 This is the figure raised from Macmillan Charity Raceday in June, where everyone’s efforts have taken the aggregate total since 1972 to approaching £10 million. So, give yourselves and all involved a clap around 2.15pm in the Winner’s Enclosure.
Thank you again for your support today and throughout this year, I hope you thoroughly enjoyed both the season and today. Winter well and I hope you can return for our new season on Wednesday 17th May 2023, the tickets go on sale online later today.

A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse, it will operate whilst there are enough customers to make a bus viable. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.
There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End.
The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta.
The William Hill Betting Shops around the course offers a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.
Bars will remain open up to an hour after the last race. The serving of drinks in hospitality areas, will be as specified in your booking details. Have an enjoyable time with us but please respect our neighbours and the wider city as you leave the racecourse.
York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale.
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
Is there disabled and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.
Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.
Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and tracksideA left-handed track which joins the straight course just under five furlongs from home. Races of seven furlongs start on a spur which joins the main circuit at a tangent after two furlongs.

There are various points and different ways to bet here at York.
1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower.
Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.
If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.
EACH WAY A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 3 runners all on to win
• 3 or 4 runners all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2
• 5 7 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Ground The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

A dominant performance by the favourite Cold Case meant four winners separated the local trainers heading into July
KB: 6 KR: 2 WH: 2
The good times kept on rolling for the early leader as we headed into Sky Bet Sunday Series. Eilean Dubh made it five winners in May.
KB: 5 KR: 2 WH: 2
While unlucky for some, it was a day to remember for team Spigot Lodge who successfully trained a memorable three-timer on the final day. Hambleton Lodge answered with a winner of their own, to keep them two behind the Burke team.
KB: 4 KR: 2 WH: 2
Karl Burke quickly bounced back with Last Crusader, The Clipper Logistics owned three-year-old won the Listed Westow by 2 1/4 lengths. However Lilac Road took HQ one better in the Middelton Stakes.
KB: 1 KR: 1 WH: 2
It was Kevin Ryan and William Haggas who found themselves ahead after proceedings on Day One of our Dante Festival as Thunder Moor and Gassee showed great a great attitude to reward their trainers.
KB: 0 KR: 1 WH: 1
KEVIN RYANOn a summer evening back in July 2017, as most attention was switching to the concert stage where Jess Glynne fans gathered, a shrewd bunch of connections kept their eyes firmly on the track as Dakota Gold justified the favourite’s tag when delivering win number one on the Knavesmire. The coming years would see the Michael Dods trained bay gelding rise up through the handicap marks, with increasingly high-profile successes. The six-figure prize in the Sky Bet Dash, then the opening contest of the Ebor Festival 2019, followed by a Group 2 triumph in the Bengough Stakes which had been rerouted to York from a soggy Ascot.
His most recent victory came on the opening day of this 2022 season at the Dante Festival. Owned throughout by Doug Graham and members of the Davison family, you sense his story has not yet been fully written.
See page 78 for conditions of this race.
This race is part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1. This means it is in the top 300 races in the land.
Only open to two-year-old horses yet weight allowances for fillies mean the boys carry more weight to reflect their greater strength, notice how Secret Angel is a filly so off the lower starting point.
An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race
Winner: CANONIZED Trainer: William Haggas Jockey: Tom Marquand Age/Weight: 2-8-10 Runners: 12 SP: 7/2 William Haggas notched another winner to his tally with Canonized always doing enough to take the Rockingham Stakes. The two-year-old defeated Witch Hunter by three-quarters of a length.

Our second handicap of the day, such races are designed for close competition so, the handicapper, is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
This one is for 3yo+ horses run over a mile, with Algiers at the top of the scale.
The high handicap rating band of 96-110 means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for Test cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer).
Why not visit the Parade Ring to see them up close before making your final selection.

race began life in 1979 as a

Yes, only when Handsome Sailor won in 1986 for Michael Dickinson did the field fall into single figures. Over the past ten years, the average field size has been around about 20 runners. Today the new super size stalls that York Racecourse purchased means 22 were declared.
Runnett, partnered by Willie Carson carrying a whopping 10st 1lb, beat four rivals in 1979 For the next two years the race attracted small, but top quality fields. Steve Cauthen won on Jester the following season and the locally trained flying mare Soba was an odds-on winner under the late David “Dandy” Nicholls 30 years ago
Not very well. Traditionally, the race has been a graveyard for favourite backers with just a handful of market leaders having scored in two decades. Kaldoun Kingdom ended a miserable run for market leaders when prevailing at odds of 6/1 in 2009 for Richard Fahey, and in 2011 Sirius Prospect also justified his place at the head of the market when landing victory at odds of 13/2 Prior to that you needed to go back to 1995 and Double Bounce to find an outright winning favourite. Last year market favourite Laugh A Minute was just touched off by 1/2 a length.
The Tatling won in 2002 and the gelding became a top sprinter with 17 victories and earnings of more than £680,000 His victories included the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and he was runner-up three times in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes here on Knavesmire. Meanwhile, Borderlescott won this is 2005 and he is of course a dual winner of the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes having triumphed in the Group 1 sprint in 2008 and 2009.
David O'Meara is no stranger to having winner's at York and has added the Coral Sprint Trophy to the races he now targets. Gulliver has been the source of his most recent success but he also won the race with Intisaab back in 2016. He has added to the Yorkshire-based trainers prevelance in the race and it does pay to follow their runners. Gulliver once again takes his place for O'Meara and is joined by Nomadic Empire. Kevin Ryan also has had winners of the race in 2017 and 2018, Bergerac and Bielsa line up for his yard and it looks a hot renewal.
Frankie Dettori has the joint best record amongst current jockeys with two wins for Luca Cumani on Khaydara in 1990 and Double Bounce in 1995, as well as victory in 2004 on Jonny Ebeneezer. However, he won’t be adding to that tally today as he is engaged to ride at Newmarket.
PJ McDonald also has two wins in the race and he's on board Lucky Man- perhaps he can jump above Frankie if Charlie Hill's charge puts his best foot forward at 3.15pm.
The Easterby family have been worth following. Peter won it twice with Polly’s Brother and with Cumbrian Waltzer in 1991 while son Tim saddled Bollin Joanne to take the prize in 1996 after he had taken over the licence at their Habton Grange Stables. Tim’s uncle Mick Easterby also scored with Benzoe in 1993. This afternoon Mick isn't represented, but Tim has Hyperfocus running here.
Based across town, David O'Meara has won three of the last seven runnings, in 2016 with Intisaab and in 2019 & 2020 with Gulliver
The 2017 & 2018 winner, Kevin Ryan, has two entered this year in the shape of Bielsa and Bergerac.
To be fair, a Yorkshire trained victor is a statistical probability today as more than half of the runners are trained in the White Rose County this afternoon. Richard Fahey, Jedd O'Keefe, Karl Burke, John Quinn and David Barron would all fancy the chances of their contenders.

Why have Coral been linked to this day since 1979, read on Sirius Prospect remains the only winning favourite in the ten renewals, and with only two other winners coming from the first two in the betting, this race is one in which the market leaders should be taken on. In fact, nine of the last ten winners have been priced 10/1 or higher so don’t be afraid to look for runners at a bigger price.
Whilst a definitive pattern is difficult to find, it is easy to see that the eight-year-old Regal Parade was an exceptional winner of the race with regards to age. Horses aged between three and five have accounted for seven of the last ten winners as well as filling the first few places in many of the past ten years' races, so it may be prudent to avoid those aged six and upwards.
Spinatrix was the highest rated winner since 2001, when successful off an official mark of 105 in 2014. At the other end of the scale, only two recent winners of the race were rated 94 or lower but as the prize money has improved then so does the quality, so lower rated horses are struggling to get into the race. Gulliver was rated 95 when winning it for the first time but was clearly understimated by the handicapper.
Considering that eight of the last ten winners carried 9st 3lb or more to victory, it appears that it is now best to focus on those with higher weights when looking at the Coral Sprint Trophy. Last year's winner carried 9st 2lb to victory and is pays to back horses around that weight.
No surprise to the Clerk but there does not appear to be any draw bias as the last ten winners of the race have come from right across the course. The lower stalls (1-9) have edged ahead in recent years having produced seven of those winners. If you look at even more closely the last five winners have come from seven or lower, it could be that's where you'd ideally want to be, enjoy the debate.
David O'Meara has really begun to assert his dominance over the last 10 years and has won the race in back to back years. Kevin Ryan had previously won the race in 2017 & 2018 so it could well pay to keep a close eye on their runners.
Trained 'Up North' Nine Of The Last Ten Winners Carried 9st 3lb or more
Statistically, horses toward the front of the market have not performed as well as those at a double figure price. This doesn't bode well for current favourite DUSKY LORD. MR WAGYU not only looks set to be around a single figure price but is also carrying top weight, he along with course specialist DAKOTA GOLD look to have their work cut out. The last six winners have carried between 9st 2lb and 9st 7lb, so pay close attention to horses in that bracket. We can also put a tentative line through the likes of AIR RAID, BIELSA, ABOLISH and GULLIVER, all of whom have their age to overcome. Previous winners have returned to claim the prize so VOLATILE ANALYST could well be dangerous off only 1lb higher than his win last year. With all this taken into consideration, SILVER SAMURAI looks to be the one to side with. Marco Bott's five-year-old has been a model of consistency and today could be the day he puts it all together.

We end where we began, a handicap for 3yo+ horses over one and a quarter miles.
“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 95 means that though these are still quality horses, they wouldn’t have fancied their chances against the winner of our first race.
