OFFICIAL RACECARD £3.50 SATURDAY, AUGUST 20TH SKY BET EBOR FESTIVAL 2022

A very warm welcome to the final day of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival 2022, featuring the most famous race of our season –the Sky Bet Ebor. This year’s renewal offers a purse of £500,000 making it Britain’s richest flat handicap, so no surprise that it has attracted a very high calibre field – have fun picking out the winner. Ahead of the Sky Bet Ebor we will welcome the riders in this historic race to the parade ring – do come and cheer them down the steps. It has been a week to savour so far, with both Baaeed and Alpinista putting on impressive displays in landing the Juddmonte International and Darley Yorkshire Oaks. Then Highfield Princess flew home in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Some major Newmarket operations have declared fancied runners, for example Ed Dunlop runs John Leper, a one time Derby favourite in his younger days The Sky Bet Race to the Ebor series sees three of the four contenders take up their slot, as Valley Forge (Andrew Balding), Gaassee(William Haggas) and Earl of Tyrone (Paddy Twoney) , are in the field (see pxx). Four other Irish handlers sit alongside Paddy Twomey in hoping to continue the recent Irish run of success Consider that Malton based David O’Meara is responsible for Get Shirty, and it could yet be a landmark day for Yorkshire. Leeds based Sky Bet are now our headline partners and share a vision for this Ebor Festival, we are delighted that the City of York which is of one of 13 races to carry their support has been upgraded to Group 2. As a commitment to this specialist distance, prize money of £400,000 means a Group One level of reward making for a classy field, headed by Sandrine, already a Group Two winner for Andrew Balding. We are delighted to welcome the 22 Sky Bet Ebor Community Sweepstake finalists to York as set out on page 62-64pp of the racecard. These good causes have been nominated by members of their community, shortlisted from a large field and each are assigned a runner in the Sky Bet Ebor The good cause connected to the winning horse will win £20,000 for their organisation, with all contenders earning a £1000 donation. Wherever they finish, we hope they thoroughly enjoy their Ebor day and all receive our thanks and admiration.

William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

We have some top class racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors. Look up to see the RAF Falcons Display team dropping in at 1.20pm, listen out for the Shepherd Group Brass Band, boogie into the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Mercier Champagne for just £43 a bottle; whatever, I just hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area. Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

RESULT 1st Quickthorn Coltrane

A fascinating field of six contested our first Group race of the day after Stradivarius and Trueshan were made non-runners. Small runner affairs can often be quite tactical and this one was no different as Tom Marquand bounced out in front on Quickthorn as he has done on his last few starts. He was given an uncontested lead and soon built up quite a healthy gap between him and his rivals, without using much energy. Favourite Coltrane bagged the rail under Rob Hornby while Tashkhan, Reshoun and Nate The Great were all content to sit in behind. Mostly Cloudy bought up the rear in search of a five-timer. The race progressed without much drama and swinging back for home Quickthorn had built up an impressive double figure length lead. Those in behind quickly began to pump away as Quickthorn became but a speck on the Ithorizon.became apparent that those in behind weren’t making any inroads on the long-time leader and Tom Marquand nursed away on Quickthorn all the way to the line, where he ran out an emphatic winner. Coltrane kept battling away to secure second, while a running on Reshoun was forced to settle for third but this race was all about Lady Blyth owned gelding, who may compete with some of the stayers not present yesterday.

Coming towards the line Highfield Princess showed that she could mix it with the best of them over the minimum and picked up in the style of a proper speedster. She surged home under a Jason Hart drive to collar the Richard Fahey trained, The Platinum Queen and once in front she was not for catching. Emaraaty Ana secured a one-two-three for Yorkshire and a third for Kevin Ryan but it was all about Highfield Princess, who gave her connections yet another Group Loftysuccess.targets were mentioned after the race by John Quinn and based on that performance she would have a brilliant chance wherever she chooses to turn up next.

THE WEATHERBYS HAMILTON LONSDALE CUP (GROUP 2)

THE COOLMORE WOOTTON BASSETT NUNTHORPE (GROUP 1)

All the talk before hand was about the Sheikh Juma Dalmook Al Maktoum owned Royal Aclaim who had announced herself on the scene with an impressive win in the John Smith’s City Wall Stakes a month prior. As with all top end Group sprints, a good break is essential and there was a ferocious fight for the lead from those who broke well. Royal Aclaim was given a low draw and as such was nearest to the far side rail. The only juvenile in the field, The Platinum Queen blazed along from the front under Hollie Doyle and looked as though she may steal it coming into the final few furlongs. Newmarket winner Khaadem joined her as the other leader and the two would remain right up there to finish second and fourth respectively.

• What is your current role at York Racecourse? General Manager of Stableside

The Gimcrack Restaurant offers a really fantastic 3 course meal or later in the day afternoon tea in a beautiful traditional setting that screams “proper” York Racecourse to me whilst not ignoring my Yorkshire roots I think it offers “proper” good value as well!

• How many years have you worked at York Racecourse? 15 years, starting as summer help in the Bookings Team

• If you could share a table in the Voltigeur with 5 people from racing over the years who would they be? These questions are getting harder! I’m going to go for a “girl power” table here, Katie Walsh, Clare Balding, Henrietta Knight, Denise Coates and York Racecourse’s very own Jane Richardson, what she’s forgotten about York Racecourse is more than I’ll ever know, so we need to make the most of her before her retirement!

Juddmonte International Day (17th August this year) which you can’t beat for the absolutely high-class racing, nothing gives me a bigger thrill then seeing some of my favourite horses throughout the year battling it out in the Group One feature, which regularly appears in the top 10 races in the world.

• What is the funniest, printable thing that you have seen/heard on the racecourse? When Marcus caught Brian the Snail, who had managed to get loose in the Stable Yard. Brian didn’t live up to his name, he was extremely fast!

17

• Who is your favourite racehorse, past or present? Absolutely this has to be Sea the Stars, I used to have a picture of him in my bedroom! For me he was the complete racehorse.

Mecca’s Angel

• Give us a hidden Gem of the Knavesmire

• What has been your favourite winning performance at York? This is really difficult; I think Mecca’s Angel winning her first Coolmore Nunthorpe, so giving Paul Mulrennan his first taste of Group 1 glory really sticks in my memory. She reeled in Wesley Ward’s American Raider, Acapulco, and was a real star that day.

• Which York Raceday would you attend if you were not working?

• As a member of the LGBT+ community, how do you find working in racing? Here at York, it simply isn’t a consideration, we all just work together as a team. My wife, Sophie, helps us out and is a familiar face at our office parties.

AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT Win Only EACH WAY A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners all on to win

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

• 8 or more runners 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• 3 or 4 runners all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner Ground The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today. to the must be 18 or over to place a bet may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted horse’s saddlecloth number horse’s name No. of days since last ran age weight st-lbs kg draw colour graphic Barons Selection previous performances /=new season -=new year C=course winner D=distance winner CD=course & distance winner BF=beaten favourite sex of horse c=colt male horse up to age 5 h=horse g=gelding Ms Dane O’Neill horse

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The last day of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival starts with a race that is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes Listed, Group 3 (like this one), Group 2 and Group 1. This race is open to 3yo+ horses and is over a trip of nine furlongs. Check out punters panel at 1pm tips (or someone blame.) YEAR’S RACE Winner: REAL WORLD Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor Jockey: Marco Ghiani Age/Weight: 4-9-5 Runners: 7 SP: EvensF Real World was well supported at short odds for this Group 3 to begin the final day last year, and he duly obliged for the Godolphin team. Real World travelled smartly into the race tracking the leaders, and when he took the lead there was no horse who could keep up with him as he hit the line over a length in front. As recently as 2019, the last running not severely impacted by the pandemic, three thoroughbreds graced both the Sky Bet Ebor and the Lexus Melbourne Cup; with the Charlie Fellowes trained, Prince of Arran, being placed second in “the race that stops the nation” after a top ten finish at York.

46

The two courses offer valuable prize money and are widely regarded as a proper test of the racehorse, so it is not easy to land a major prize at either never mind, both. That honour so nearly went the way of Rekindling, who gave Joseph O’Brien a first major success in the Melbourne Cup of that November having been placed fourth in the Al Basti Equiworld Dante Stakes in the northern hemisphere in the May of 2017 Prince of Arran Heartbreak City (r) Purple Moon (r)

Whilst Australia’s premier racecourse might be more than 10,500 miles from York, operating in a different hemisphere; the links between the Knavesmire and Flemington are actually very close.

What’s more, in three of the last four prior to that, the Lexus Melbourne Cup the Sky Bet Ebor winner has made the top ten.

Rekindling Cross Counter

Not only do the teams at the two venues regularly share best practice but their signature contests are interwoven by the participants.

Though the current Covid-19 crisis thankfully seems to beeasing, there is still a real challenge of doing the double There have been a couple of near misses in recent times. Both Heartbreak City in 2016 and Purple Moon in 2007, headed down under as champions to find only one better in their bid for a famous double

DOUBLING UP DOWN UNDER

A year later and Cross Counter gave the Godolphin operation their first victory at Flemington, however the Charlie Appleby trailblazer had only managed a close up second on the Knavesmire in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur of that August. It had been the opposite way around for Max Dynamite in 2015, when the Ricci family owned gelding partnered Frankie Dettori into the York Winner’s Enclosure in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, to just miss out in Australia, behind Prince of Penzance.

* Winners of 2020 & 2021 opted to skip a trip down under due to the ongoing Covid 19 Pandemic As well as the star horses, the same sense of fun is shared by the occasions that host the feature races. In 2019, York Racecourse was honoured to be the only European host to the Lexus Melbourne Cup on its charitable global tour Over a memorable few days, the unique trophy was the star of numerous racegoers selfies as well as visiting racing yards and the East Yorkshire village that shares its name Though for many followers on Social media, it was the appearance with the irrepressible Yorkshire Terriers that captured their hearts.

FUN TIMES REMEMBERED

Muntahaa 47

In more than quarter of a century since Vintage Crop so memorably became the first European trained of Melbourne’s big race, only two other raiders have come home with the famous three-handled trophy. Whether any of this week’s champions will join that elite list, only time can tell, but York has certainly been an important part of the career of many who have already come close How the last decade of Sky Bet Ebor winners fared in the Lexus Melbourne Cup 2021 : * 2020: * 2019: Mustajeer....................... 22nd 2018: Muntahaa: 9th 2017: Nakeeta: 5th 2016: Heartbreak City 2nd 2015: Litigant n/a 2014: Mutual Regard............. 14th 2013: Tiger Cliff n/a 2012: Willing Foe ran 5th in 2014

RACE DESCRIPTION A competitive heritage handicap for 3yo run over a mile and three quarters; more significantly the first contest in the 2023 Race to The Ebor Series, see page 66 for details. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The horse considered by the handicapper as the best, on past performance, will carry the most weight; Wild Crusade carries the top weight today.

The Sky Bet Melrose Stakes One Mile About Six Furlongs (2,800 metres) See page 93 for conditions of this race.

VALLEY FORGE

FIGHT VALLEY FORGE

To complement this initiative York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration and used for the very first time in 2019 as Mustajeer scooped the pot in the Sky Bet Ebor. With three from four taking up their berth, we will see if the winner of the big race, hails from one of the trials today.

Wednesday 11

Already a memorable week for the William Haggas team that clearly target these contests and for the second successive year the yellow and black silks of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum qualified through the Sky Bet Jorvik, courtesy of Gaassee this season, he also takes up his spot. At the start of June, Earl of Tyrone entered the mix for County Tipperary based Paddy Twomey, he starts today as likely market leader. The Crisford family trained, Without A Fight, took the Sky Bet Grand Cup and so the 4th slot, but we already know that Flemington in November is his target, so he has swerved this opportunity.

Sky Bet Jorvik Handicap (4YO+) 1m 4f May Sky Bet Stakes (Handicap, 4YO+) Curragh 1m 6f Wednesday 1 June 2022

Today sees the fruition of a series entitled the “Race To The Ebor” which includes four high-class staying contests.

In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process, which explains the weight allocated to Valley Forge..

The

Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horses most recent form.

HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE

BIG HANDICAP?

Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Global Storm is rated 106 is considered 1lb “better” than Shanroe who is rated 105. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight theoretically Spirit Catcher should win every time as he is the better horse. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field. So in this example Global Storm carries 1lb more than Shanroe, which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the twenty-two runners but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all seventeen runners cross the line together so how to separate them in advance? Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into.

A SKY BET EBOR

4) GROUND If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. Trawlerman is one who will enjoy a quicker surfaces. However Benaud wins have come on a surface that is a little softer. So make sure to check the weather and the ground description.

Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology.

2) THE DRAW Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running around a bend like for this one, they would lobby for the horse drawn with the shortest way home. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn down the centre of the track have often held the upper hand, the counter logic being that their jockey can keep an eye on the competition on both flanks. Most times, over the longer distance the pace of the race sorts out any benefit accrued from the bend. Perhaps Earl Of Tyrone can use this to his advantage.

Narrowing down the field of twenty-two declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is.

Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!

3) DISTANCE Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable. Calling The Wind, Shanroe and Rodrigo Diaz have all won over today’s disrance

5) YORK RECORD “Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground. This year we have plenty of horses that have won at the course and distance, Valley Forge is the only horse to have completed the double.

6) CONCLUSION Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Going on a hunch that ‘good’ will be the description, the Ger Lyons-trained Licence might well continue his consistent form to claim first place. He’s got a good draw in 19 and good ground should be right up his street. The Irish have a good record in recent years and his improver could take some beating.

1) FORM Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few who come here without having the best of recent records and so might be best ignored today; Raymond Tusk, Quenelle D’Or & John Leeper.

This afternoon’s Sky Bet Ebor looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with twenty-two closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of?

Simply it is York’s most famous race, and shares its name with the Roman city, EBORACUM that is now known as York. It is the biggest gambling heat of the week here on the Knavesmire and the oldest race of the Festival, first run 1843. Sea Pigeon

FACT FILE: Where have four decades gone, Sea Pigeon was a most popular winner in 1979 The nine-year-old gelding, once ante-post favourite for the Derby and a future dual Champion Hurdle winner, represented Yorkshire trainer Peter Easterby and humped 10 stone to victory He was ridden to victory by jump jockey Jonjo O’Neill now a highly successful trainer

When Sergeant Cecil won another great race on Knavesmire? He won the 2005 Sky Bet Ebor on his first visit to York and added the Stobart Rail Northumberland Plate and the Cesarewitch in the same year to make history by becoming the first horse to land the three premier staying handicaps.

Pagan was the first winner of the race, ridden by Slim Templeman and trained by John Scott. The 6-1 shot carried 7st 13lbs and was a popular winner. Soon the betting public was hooked and York’s fortunes blossomed.

The gelding always raised his game on the Knavesmire and later added the Yorkshire Cup, the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup and the rearranged 2006 Doncaster Cup to his triumphs here.

They were in 2009 and 2010 when Sesenta and Dirar won for Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott respectively and again in 2014 when Mutual Regard won for Johnny Murtagh. But overall, runners from over the water don’t have the greatest of records, after a lean spell in the later years of last century and first decade of this, illuminated only by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Mediterranean in 2001, fortunes have been better of late With the ill-fated Heartbreak City’s impressive triumph in 2016 and Mustajeer winning 2019’s race, this new era was confirmed as Sonnyboyliston took the prize back to Ireland for Johnny Murtagh. Today the Emerald Isle is represented by five yards and six horses: Earl Of Tyrone, Licence, Benaud, Ever Present, Okita Soushi and Shanroe Mutual Regard

The recently-retired Luca Cumani was the trainer to follow, having won it three times Vicious Circle (1999), Mephisto (2004) & Purple Moon (2007). Johnny Murtagh has won two of the last ten renewals, including the 2014 renewal, and with Sonnyboyliston last year, but isn’t represented today. Three other trainers with runners today have tasted past success John & Thady Gosden (Trawlerman) and Ger Lyons (Licence).

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

David O’Meara 69

Yorkshire-trained horses have a good overall record, although Moyenne Corniche became only the fourth winner in the past 26 renewals when triumphing six years ago for Brian Ellison. The late Jimmy Fitzgerald saddled Sapience to score in 1989, the now record-breaking Mark Johnston’s Quick Ransom was the hero in 1992 and Les Eyre won with Far Ahead in 1997. But with none of the above represented in this year’s Sky Bet Ebor, only David O’Meara (a yard that had the winner and two further places in Thursday’s big handicap), can join that list today with top weight Get Shirty WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

LEADING TRAINER?

Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker We’ve been making betting better for years and we’re home of First Race Specials and the Soccer Saturday Price Boost. We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and recently extended our partnership with York Racecourse which includes the sponsorship of a lucky 13 races this week. The much missed Lester Piggott, whose statue is now on the Edwardian Weighing Room Lawn, leads the way with five victories. When it comes to the current crop, there are three to have won the race before, Jim Crowley (Benaud), Frankie Dettori (Trawlerman) and Jamie Spencer (Rodrigo Diaz), all three will be looking to make it two wins.

THE 3-YEAR-OLD QUESTION?

Lester Piggott

LEADING RIDER?

With the Sky Bet Ebor becoming one of Europe’s richest and best handicaps, it was the right time to consider how the race best fits in to the overall racing programme. For the three-year-olds, the established Pattern programme has a proven rhythm and it is not the intention to alter running plans for the best of the Classic crop The investment in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur keeps the pathway to a record level of £200,000 for the Cazoo St Leger The Ebor will now focus on stayers aged four and upwards. The Race to The Ebor also links the more valuable Sky Bet Melrose with next season, so retaining a 3-y-o connection. In practical terms, the stats show that as the quality of the Ebor has increased, only two horses aged three actually made the stalls in the last decade (prior to the switch), with the last classic generation winner back in 2001, when Mediterranean took the spoils.

S 2012

G 2016

The seven-year-old Litigant became the oldest winner since Sea Pigeon back in 1979 when landing the spoils four years ago but the group to focus on is the five and six-year-olds, who between them have landed seven of the last ten renewals. They represent over half of the twenty-two runner field this time around.

Horses rated between 99 and 108 may have won the race nine times in the last ten renewals but as the weights continue to compress, you need to be rated that high to even get in nowadays. The highest rated winner in recent years was Muntahaa, who won off a mark of 109 in 2018, with the three two winners, Mustajeer, Fujaira Prince and Sonnyboyliston, rated 108.

DRAW Usually in races such as this, being drawn on the rail is an advantage but that hasn’t proved the case in the Sky Bet Ebor. The fact that eight of the last ten winners have been drawn in stall 10 or higher suggests that is in fact the higher drawn horses which seem to be favoured. With victory in the Ebor being held in such high esteem, those jockeys drawn low have shown a tendency to break far too quickly from the stalls in order to take advantage of their draw but only end up setting a furious early pace which can often set the race up for more patiently ridden rivals.

AGE

RECENT FORM Unexposed, dark horses do not win the Ebor. Nine of the last ten winners had achieved a top five finish on their most recent start. We can take this trend one step further when you consider that seven of the last ten winners had achieved a top two finish on either or both of their two latest starts.

Year

A genuniely top-class renewal of this famous Heritage Handicap and with A genuinely top-class renewal of this famous Heritage Handicap and with 9 of the 22 runners rated at least 105, it's a sensational race in prospect. The trends point to a highly-rated five or six-year-old who's been in good form and the David Simcocktrained RODRIGO DIAZ certainly ticks all those boxes. A real consistent performer this season, he's never run over course and distance but is rated 105 and has finished in the first two on his last two starts. Direct dangers look to come from across the pond with a whole host of Irish challengers. Joseph O'Brien sends over two, including the JP McManus owned Benaud, who finished behind Earl Of Tyrone, in one of the four Ebor trials. Ger Lyons saddles the Juddmonte owned Licence, who looks very unexposed but does have a few lb to find on some of his rivals. - LAST TEN RUNNINGS Winner Trainer Jockey SP Runners Time Going Sonnyboyliston Johnny Murtagh Ben Coen 10/1 20 ran 2m 56.10s Fujaira Prince Roger Varian Andrea Atzeni 11/2F 21 ran 3m 4.22s Mustajeer Ger Lyons Colin Keane 16/1 22 ran 2m 52.97s G/F Muntahaa John Gosden Jim Crowley 11/1 20 ran 2m 53.48s G/F Nakeeta Iain Jardine Callum Rodriguez 12/1 19 ran 2m 56.54s Heartbreak City A J Martin Adam McNamara 15/2 20 ran 2m 56.13s Litigant

RACE DESCRIPTION Probably our most famous race, the Sky Bet Ebor, is open to 4yo+ horses and over a trip of a mile and three quarters. This race is theoretically open to any horse regardless of its official mark. The highest rated, still set to carry the most weight in this race today, are Get Shirty and Enemy. The runners are undoubtedly amongst the best in their class in Britain so remember to follow their progress in future contests, they could star in the Lexus Melbourne Cup Perhaps take a close up look in the Parade Ring before they go to post to make your final selection.

The £100,000 prize money as well as handicap rating band means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the cricketers at Lords a score of over 100 denotes a top performer).
