MID SUMMER RACEDAY F E AT UR ING
THE SEAT UNIQUE GANTON STAKES (L I S T E D R A C E )
Welcome A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire, where the “black type” racing action is courtesy of the £60,000 Listed Seat Unique Ganton Stakes, part of a seven-race card offering £180,000 in prize money. Seat Unique are our new partners powering the hospitality elements of our website yorkracecourse.co.uk so we are delighted to welcome them to York as sponsors of this high-quality mile race. The excitement continues in the Winner’s Enclosure after our second race, as the successful horse in a unique race in York’s calendar - the SKF Rous Seller – comes under the hammer of Bernard Condren, our Goffs UK auctioneer. Enjoy the spectacle but be mindful that a poorly timed scratch of the nose could see you returning home with a new four-legged friend! We are proud to be working with the European Breeders’ Fund in staging the 3pm race, a valuable contest for fillies over six furlongs, as both York Racecourse and the EBF are committed advocates of Racing with Pride. York Racecourse is determined to ensure racing on the Knavesmire is welcoming and inclusive for all – racegoers, visitors and colleagues alike. Our senior management team have developed and committed to the industry Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, and we have undertaken Diversity training modules and have sought to ensure all departments and areas are as diverse, inclusive and welcoming as possible. Among our existing team, we have members of the LGBT+ community who we are proud to have as colleagues. We are actively working within racing, alongside the Diversity in Racing Steering Group to ensure our diverse workforce can be confident, comfortable and be part of a fully inclusive community, we welcome DiRSG members and members of the York Templars inclusive rugby team, here this afternoon. Look out for the rainbow silks being worn by Jim Crowley aboard Zim Baby, these were specially created to celebrate Pride, and all are grateful for the support of Fosnic Racing. Today’s six figure prize money and the course improvements can only be achieved through your support and that of our sponsors. Many thanks for your attendance and to Seat Unique, SKF, Andy Thornton Hospitality Furniture, No1 York by Guesthouse Hotels, Constant Security, The European Breeders Fund, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing (if it is a Friday on the Knavesmire then our friends from The Curragh are in town) for their generous support. Talking of our sponsors do visit the refurbished Champagne Pavilion to try some of our new Andy Thornton furniture! Since we last raced the Sir Michael Stoute trained, Desert Crown, has become the twelfth horse to record the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante/Epsom Derby double. Emily Upjohn so nearly gave us the York/Epsom double. Look out for York winners next week at Royal Ascot. Also, since we last raced, we mourn the passing of racing Hall of Fame jockey, Lester Pigott. Please see page 17 for our tribute to the sporting legend, known as The Long Fellow. I hope you that you are able to come racing at York again soon, perhaps even tomorrow to Macmillan Charity raceday, just by so doing you will help raise money for good causes; alternatively you can join in the online auction already by following the link from our website, more details on page 52 or perhaps with a raffle ticket, it might be your best chance of a winner! For now, I wish you an enjoyable and successful day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

LESTER PIGGOTT ON THE KNAVESMIRE As tributes from across the racing globe have reminded us, Lester Piggott always thought of York as a favourite, and we all remember just three years ago his pride as the statue in his honour was unveiled outside the Edwardian Weighing Room.
Lester’s death, since our last raceday, has brought out so many memories, and the stats provide a record that will remain unsurpassed in all of our lifetimes. To some, he was the Long Fellow, to others Old Stone Face but to the patrons at York in a two-decade spell when he was Champion Jockey 11 times and won 30 classics, Lester was admired and respected as ‘the best’ – a man who rode his first winner at the age of 12 and the first of his 9 Epsom Derby winners while still a teenager. As for York Group Ones, the numbers tell the tale - 7 Group One Coolmore Nunthorpes - starting with back-to-back successes on Right Boy in the late 1950’s, add another 4 in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, beginning in 1959 with Petite Etoile trained by Sir Noel Murless, plus 5 Juddmonte international triumphs included more back-to-back glory, when French mare Dahlia won in 1974 & 1975. It wasn’t just in August, his 8 wins in the Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup, headed by two in 1981/82 with the great Ardross is another record unlikely ever to be broken.
Throw in the first ever staging of the Tattersalls Musidora back in 1961, remarkably a year after his first Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante triumph (St Paddy was the first, the aptly name Simply Great his last more than twenty years later). It’s no surprise that racegoers loved the man, he won 5 Sky Bet Ebor’s- the final one with Jupiter Island for Clive Brittain in 1983. Speaking when the statue was unveiled, as Lester watched on, Lord Grimthorpe, York Chairman at the time noted his own fond memories of the summer of ‘69 and My Swallow winning a brace of competitive handicaps including what was then the John Smith’s Magnet Cup. Lester said he was ‘honoured and grateful’. Everyone involved in York Racecourse sends our sincere condolences to Lester’s family. Those who were lucky enough to see one of racing’s greatest in action will doubtless pause a moment as they pass his likeness, then smile about happy days past.
Lester winning the Juddmonte International of 1992 aboard Rodrigo De Triano
FACES BEHIND THE RACES • What is your current role at York Racecourse? General Manager of Stableside
• How many years have you worked at York Racecourse? 15 years, starting as summer help in the Bookings Team
• Outside the racedays at York, what do you do the rest of the year?
At Stableside we welcome hotel guests when we are not looking after stable staff, so there is a never a quiet day for us! From school children exploring the wonders of the city, to leisure guests looking for that proper Yorkshire welcome. You will usually find me up and down our corridors ensuring everything is just right for our next visitor!
• At the end of the raceday at York Racecourse, tell us what makes it a good one?
Probably under 30,000 steps and where everyone leaves happy, having sampled what I think are the best racing staff facilities in the country, eager for their next visit and at least seven having a winner in the back of their horse box!
• How did you become involved in racing at York?
My family have always been involved, from my Grandfather being an on-course bookmaker and my Dad following in his footsteps. Racing was always going to be my path, I started at the Racecourse as work experience and never left!
• As a member of the LGBT+ community, how do you find working in racing? Here at York, it simply isn’t a consideration, we all just work together as a team.
My wife, Sophie, helps us out and is a familiar face at our office parties.

FAY WAUDBY-GREEN • Give us a hidden Gem of the Knavesmire
The Gimcrack Restaurant offers a really fantastic 3 course meal or later in the day afternoon tea in a beautiful traditional setting that screams “proper” York Racecourse to me whilst not ignoring my Yorkshire roots I think it offers “proper” good value as well!
• Thinking of racing personalities, past and present, what question would you most like to ask them? How do you pick a future winner?
• Which York Raceday would you attend if you were not working?
Juddmonte International Day (18th August this year) which you can’t beat for the absolutely high-class racing, nothing gives me a bigger thrill then seeing some of my favourite horses throughout the year battling it out in the Group One feature, which regularly appears in the top 10 races in the world.
Mecca’s Angel
• What has been your favourite winning performance at York?
This is really difficult; I think Mecca’s Angel winning her first Coolmore Nunthorpe, so giving Paul Mulrennan his first taste of Group 1 glory really sticks in my memory. She reeled in Wesley Ward’s American Raider, Acapulco, and was a real star that day.
• Who is your favourite racehorse, past or present?
Absolutely this has to be Sea the Stars, I used to have a picture of him in my bedroom! For me he was the complete racehorse, he won over different distances, in different countries and took on all comers and I don’t think they ever truly got to the bottom of him, he always pulled out more. Some people say horses have a look when they know they’re the best and when I saw Sea the Stars in the Parade Ring before his Juddmonte victory he had that look.
• If you could share a table in the Voltigeur with 5 people from racing over the years who would they be?
These questions are getting harder! I’m going to go for a “girl power” table here, Katie Walsh, Clare Balding, Henrietta Knight, Denise Coates and York Racecourse’s very own Jane Richardson, what she’s forgotten about York Racecourse is more than I’ll ever know, so we need to make the most of her before her retirement!
• What is the funniest, printable thing that you have seen/heard on the racecourse?
When Marcus caught Brian the Snail, who had managed to get loose in the Stable Yard. Brian didn’t live up to his name, he was extremely fast! 19
WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T
There are various points and different ways to bet here at York. 1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower. PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe. COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.
WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT EACH WAY
Win Only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.).
BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE
At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.
STRAIGHT FORECAST
Name the first and second in the correct order.
In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager. Their office is located near the Theakston Bar to the South of the main Betting Ring.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

1m 2f Handicap 61-80 £15,000 4+ Inside Rail
One Mile, Two Furlongs About 56 Yards See page 75 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A testing handicap, open only to horses aged four-years-old and over and intended for those whose mark is between 61-80. The spotlight falls on the jockeys as this race is limited to gentleman amateur riders, see how they are called “Mr”. There is a sliding scale as measured by winners; a partnership receives a 5lb benefit if the human has ten of fewer previous winning rides, as would be the case for Matt Brown aboard Brancaster. At the other end of the spectrum, Gordonstoun gets no respite having one of the most successful amateur riders on his back, Simon Walker. It is the richest race in the land for these amateurs, so maybe visit the Parade Ring to assess the nerves before placing your bet.

KNAVESMIRE TIP HOTSPUR HARRY returned to form at Nottingham in some style and although he has a 5lb penalty for that, he still looks well treated and could take some beating. Sagauteur got the job done at Newcastle last time, when narrowly denying Molinari, and looks to have solid credentials. Tim Easterby always warrants respect in these races and his Bollin Margaret was a good third at Beverley last month and enters calculations.

Turning things around, one industry at a time Today, the demands are as tough as they are necessary. Electrification. Net-zero emissions. Circularity. To achieve their sustainability goals, our customers must find new ways of working, and dare to make quick, sometimes uncomfortable decisions. They opt out, re-prioritize, invest in the unknown. As the industry now faces a paradigm shift, it is forced to rely even more on technology. Just like it should! The way to sustainable rotation is through reduced energy consumption, and that’s something we happen to know quite a bit about. So much, in fact, that we can probably help turn this around.
Visit us at skf.com or give us a call and we’ll look at it together.

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)
6f Selling £25,000 2 Farside
See page 75 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A race limited to 2yo horses so in their first season, meaning level weights for runners of the same sex but notice how Beautiful Mum carries 5lbs less, this is the allowance given to the nine fillies in the race to recognise their relative strength against the boys at this stage in their career. This selling stakes aims to showcase horses which are for sale; imagine a car dealer having a race of all the motors available on the forecourt. Immediately after the race the winner is offered for sale by an auction. Bidding is conducted by Bernard Condren of Goffs UK and is to start at the minimum price of £10,000 and any other horse in the race can be claimed for £15,000. If the horse has won particularly well then you may see the original owner trying to buy it back, hopefully for less than the prize money it has just collected! Blame the press for your betting by seeking advice from the board by the Winner’s Enclosure.
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: TAREEKH Trainer: Richard Fahey Jockey: Jack Mitchell Age/Weight: 2-9-0 SP: 5/2 Runners: 20 Jack Mitchell switched Tareekh to challenge at the two-furlong pole and still looked to have plenty of horse underneath him. KNAVESMIRE TIP It would be no surprise to see EXPLICIT back up his most recent effort at Musselburgh, where he kept on strongly towards the finish. A longer trip shouldn’t rule him out based on the nature of that win, so he gets the vote ahead of Duchray, who has an appealing pedigree and is likely capable of better than his latest effort. Teatime Tipple is another to note having lost out to subsequent winner Star Of Lady M on his most recent run.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A case can be made for plenty in this field and the three-year-old Makarova catches the eye after maintaining her unbeaten record over 6f when scoring readily at Salisbury last month. The daughter of Acclamation is respected but the vote goes to William Haggas’ AROUSING, who is an intriguing prospect back on turf and with the blinkers fitted. Candescence stepped up when winning comfortably at Hamilton on her latest start and can also get involved.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our fourth race today is a part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, (as here), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. This race is open to three-year-old horses and older and is over a trip of a mile. Horses of the same age and sex carry the same weight, so this is made simple today as all the contestants are older male thoroughbreds. Interestingly, success at a yet higher level would result in the penalty of additional weight however it is a genuine level weights affair today as none have yet managed that feat. An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Mohaafeth comes out top on official ratings and the dropped-in-class colt warrants plenty of respect with a tongue-tie fitted, while Valiant Prince and Art Du Val give Godolphin a strong hand. However, a chance is taken on BRUNCH, who has won twice and placed twice in five previous trips to York. His head second over course and distance last month was a career-best performance and any further improvement would see him go close in this contest.

YORK TO ASCOT LINKED IN HISTORY AND QUALITY
Getting on for twenty years may have slipped past since its visit, but the links between York and the Royal Meeting continue to be strong. Here, we look at a few highlights…
SPRINTING
History shows us: Battaash as the star of the modern era, with his final win at York coming in the Coolmore Nunthorpe in 2020 having already landed the fastest contest in Berkshire for the speedballs. While 2015 Group 1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner, Twilight Son, took victory in the Pavers Charity Sprint here in the same year, with 2016 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack winner, Blue Point, winning both the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes and Jubilee Sprints of 2019. The week ahead: York regular Winter Power looks set to line up again in this year’s King’s Stand. She’s won three times at York and Tim Easterby will be hoping she can do the North South double next week. Lusail was an impressive winner in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes. The three-year-old has entries in the St James’ Palace Stakes and the Commonwealth Cup. The Commonwealth Cup also has a York connection, as two of those at the front of the market have run well at York in the past. Ehraz finished fifth in the Tattersalls Acomb Stakes and is hot property in the betting market.
Winter Power
JUVENILES History shows us: Some of the very best two-year-olds in training are sent to York and the victory of Signora Cabello in the 2018 Knights Solicitors EBF Marygate Fillies’ Stakes, before John Quinn’s filly took the Queen Mary Stakes, is indicative of this. The week ahead: Pillow Talk, who was a Knavesmire winner at the Dante Festival, looks to be heading for the Queen Mary Stakes. The opening race of the Friday at York in May has provided Ascot winners in previous years, also keep an eye on the second Yahsat.
STAYERS History shows us: Stradivarius is indeed the champion stayer after he notched a third win in the Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup during the 2021 Dante week. The week ahead: The Clarehaven star will surely line up in search of Gold Cup number four on Thursday however he will be going up against the rapid improver Trueshan for Alan King. The six-year-old was seen finishing eighth in the 2020 Sky Bet Ebor and has gone onto become a top Group performer. York contender Tashkan will be hoping he can reverse the form with Stradivarius. Stradivarius
56
MIDDLE DISTANCE History shows us: Sir Michael Stoute’s record in this division is something of a sensation - Telescope won the Group 2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur here before going onto Ascot glory. He repeated the York to Ascot trick with Snow Sky in 2015. The Stoute/York/Hardwicke connection continued as the 2017 Al Basti Equiworld Fanny Logan Dubai Dante third, Crystal Ocean, took the 2018 Hardwicke Stakes. More recently Fanny Logan won the British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric Fillies’ Stakes in 2019 before going onto win the 2020 Hardwicke Stakes for John Gosden. The week ahead: Emily Upjohn was an unlucky second in this year’s Epsom Oaks after stumbling when leaving the stalls. She was an electric winner of the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at this year’s Dante Festival and could well line up at Ascot this week if the race hasn’t taken too much out of her. The Group 2 Ribblesdale would be the obvious route to give her a Group 2 in the North and South East.
PICK ME AN OUTSIDER
1895 Duke Of York Clipper Logistics Stakes winner Highfield Princess has just the one entry next week. She looks set to take her place in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes and has already won at the Royal meeting in 2021. In a hot looking renewal, she may be the forgotten one in the race and could have to overcome some other York winners in Emaraaty Ana and Great Ambassador.
THE HANDICAPS History shows us: Picking handicap winners is never easy however the Knavesmire can be a indicator for horses that will run well. Aricebo has been a real hero for connections, running six times at York. Last year he gave each-way punters a nice return in the King’s Stand. Escobar 2020 Royal Hunt Cup winner Real World went onto taste Group success in the Sky Bet Stakes during the Ebor Festival, completeing the Ascot York double. The week ahead: Baybridge looks to be a leading player for the master Sir Michael Stoute. The four-year-old colt took home the spoils at the end of 2021 in a 0-100 handicap on our finale weekend. He also has an entry in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and it will be interesting to see whether he steps up in trip. Brunch is entered in today’s York Seat Unique Ganton Stakes, should he run well a trip to the Royal Hunt Cup on Wednesday could be on the cards. Escobar finally got his head in front in our big field handicap at the end of May. The eight-year-old had been on quite the losing run and will now be looking to build on that win in the Royal Hunt Cup where he has run well before.
THE OTHER WAY AROUND
A strong cast list but as a leading man, the mighty Frankel won the Queen Anne two months before his triumph in the Juddmonte International. So follow the Ascot form back to York for this year’s Ebor Festival. Last year, we saw Real World follow up a win at the Royal Meeting so notebooks and iPads at the ready.

5th Race 4.05 The Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Stakes About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)
Distance: Race Type: Rating: Prize Money: Age: Stalls:
7f Handicap 71-90 £15,000 4+ Farside
See page 75 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Again, a handicap, this time for horses rated between 71 and 90. The shorter distance of only seven furlongs usually makes for a tight finish. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see how Northern Express and Wobwobwob are amongst those with the double consonant seal of previous success. Looking for help? Follow the red bi plane through the card for the racecourse tipster’s recommendations.

KNAVESMIRE TIP RUSSCO improved markedly last year and might not be done yet on the evidence of his comeback third at Haydock last month. He has gone up 2lb for that effort, but the booking of Jim Crowley suggests connections are confident of another big run and he boasts figures of 3-5 over this trip. Northern Express is a C&D winner who has been running well in defeat all year, so warrants plenty of respect, while Ugo Gregory wouldn’t be winning out of turn.

RACE DESCRIPTION In that quest for a competitive race this one is limited to 2-year-old Fillies running over 5 furlongs, the shortest distance in British racing. Again, all are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. This early in their career your selection may come down to a choice of the two “p”s, pedigree or pin.

KNAVESMIRE TIP YOUR SPIRIT displayed plenty of promise when finishing third on her racecourse debut in the Hilary Needler at Beverley late last month and the strength of that form suggests that she could be hard to beat this afternoon. Nashur has a similar profile to the selection and she could prove to be the main threat, although Mersea and Poppy Carrew also merit places on the shortlist.

RACE DESCRIPTION A return to handicap conditions for what is often termed “the get out stakes” and to freshen the available pool, it is open to those who are aged four-years-old and over. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 85 means that though these ones are still quality performers, they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar. If you are planning your bets early then see what the Punters panel has to say at 1,.15pm- caviar or cod roe tonight?

KNAVESMIRE TIP It’s hard to oppose recent Pontefract winner CHARGING THUNDER, who made all and was never seriously challenged, so the 5lb penalty may not be enough to stop him following up. Haliphon looks the obvious danger having been denied by the narrowest of margins at Epsom last Saturday and he is now 5lb well-in. Year Of The Dragon is trying this trip for the first time and it may well bring out some extra improvement.
