Welcome A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for some excellent racing action at our first ever Tribute Weekend. I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day, whether your primary focus is the equine stars or the sequined performers or even a bit of both! Today marks only the fourth staging of our newest Pattern race, the Group 3 William Hill Brontë Cup. This year offering a £90,000 prize for fillies and mares, it is part of a wider plan to encourage the best female stayers to remain in training in Britain, beyond their three-year-old careers. One example would be Believe In Love, twice a winner at this level already who has travelled up from Roger Varian’s Newmarket yard to face international opposition in the form of Mighty Blue who has arrived from the County Kilkenny base of Joseph O’Brien. The feature handicap is a valuable sprint over five furlongs, again generously supported by William Hill. A packed field of speedsters, including some familiar names to racing fans. None more so than Copper Knight, who shares the record as the “winningmost “ horse here with six wins to date (Dakota Gold who runs on Sunday and the mighty Stradivarius share top spot at the moment). They’ll hurtle down the 1,000 metres in under a minute and all you have to do is unearth the winner - good luck and do refamiliarise yourself with them in the Parade Ring beforehand. Our final race today, remembers Reg Bond, a tremendous supporter of York Racecourse and Yorkshire racing as well as being a shining light for the joy of being an owner-breeder. York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport and to attracting the best horses to race for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the season will reach £10m for the first time. This can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. Many thanks for your attendance and to William Hill, the Yorkshire Regiment, the families of Phoebe Johnson and Reg Bond, as well as the European Breeders’ Fund, for their generous support The team have been busy preparing for your return, the Champagne Pavilion has been given a fresh new look, whilst on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand the renamed 1731 Pie Shop both celebrates the year when racing started on the Knavesmire and serves a range of home-made goodies. If we are blessed with the weather then both of the County Stand Garden and Roberto Village Bar offer a speed of service with nearby outside seating. Do enjoy the fabulous Band of the Yorkshire Regiment on the Edwardian Weighing Room Lawn and capture a memory of the day with our complimentary 360° selfie camera, on the stage by the Winner’s Enclosure. I hope you can join us for Day Two of Tribute Weekend tomorrow, when we swap Dancing Queen for something more Flash, courtesy of Majesty Queen. Many thanks again for your support and best wishes for an enjoyable, even profitable, day.

The William Hill Betting Shops around the course offers a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.
BAR CLOSING TIMES Bars will remain open up to an hour after the last race. The serving of drinks in hospitality areas, will be as specified in your booking details. Have an enjoyable time with us but please respect our neighbours and the wider city as you leave the racecourse.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 9
A RACECOURSE FOR ALL We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. A viewing are has been reserved in front of the stage, please ask a steward for access. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.
Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

FLASHBACK JOHN AND THADY GOSDEN STRIKE FIRST The week got off to a bang as Emily Upjohn sauntered her way to an eased down five-length victory in the Tattersalls Musidora. She had been a little keen in the early part of the race but fairly flew home once Frankie Dettori asked the question. You’ll struggle to find an easier winner of the race and all roads lead to the Cazoo Oaks, will it be a York/Epsom double for the eighth time?
DESERT CROWN PUTS SIR MICHAEL STOUTE BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT It’s been a while since Sir Michael Stoute had the ante-post favourite for the Derby, yet Desert Crown looks to be the real deal. The son of Nathaniel was only having his second start on the track but boy was he impressive. Ridden conservatively by Richard Kingscote the bay colt was switched out at the three-furlong pole and made steady progress to lead two furlongs from home. Coming into the final furlong, victory was assured and he was eased down by Richard Kingscote to take Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante glory.
STRADIVARIUS MAKES IT A PERFECT SIX ON THE KNAVESMIRE Stradivarius continued the fine form of John & Thady Gosden to regain his crown in the Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup. Frankie pushed him along around three furlongs from home, but he knew he had the race won and despite being kept up to his work, the result was never in doubt.
THE GOOD TIMES KEEP ON ROLLING FOR CLAREHAVEN
Samburu kept the good times rolling for the Clarehaven team after justifying favouritism in our penultimate race on day one. It was a shrewd bit of race planning by connections, who clearly have a Group horse in the making on their hands. Frankie, wearing the famous Juddmonte silks, bagged the nearside rails coming into the final few furlongs and even though he showed signs of greenness, he was a ready winner of the Listed EBF Westow Stakes.
P U Z Z L E CORNER GUESS WHO?
Can you name the jockey who won last year’s William Hill Brontë Cup?
WHO AM I? Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? 1.
I took was born in 1972, four days after Christmas day and have been training racehorses since 2003. I come from racing stock, and you will have seen my family members on TV. I train in Hampshire and had my first Group One winner in 2003
2.
I’ve run at York 15 times in my career but have only won once. My trainer has an excellent record at the track and only trains down the road. My only win at York came in July of 2017 where I was ridden by James Sullivan. My sire won the Nunthorpe in the 90’s and I am of the same speedy nature.
3.
A regular visit to the Knavesmire, my training base is fewer than 50 miles away from the racecourse. In 2021 I had three winners at York and will be hoping to surpass that total this season.

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T
There are various points and different ways to bet here at York. 1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower. PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe. COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.
WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT EACH WAY
Win Only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.).
BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE
At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.
STRAIGHT FORECAST
Name the first and second in the correct order.
In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager. Their office is located near the Theakston Bar to the South of the main Betting Ring.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

RACE DESCRIPTION Welcome to Tribute Weekend at York. We start with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance, seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best on past form will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight, Path Of Thunder is the top weight in this one. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look C denoting has won at York such as Escobar or D meaning won over this distance, like Safe Voyage, Notice how So Beloved is one of several here to carry both. Good luck in starting as you’d wish to go on!
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: VOLATILE ANALYST Trainer: Keith Dalgleish Jockey: Callum Rodriguez Age/Weight: 4-9-0 Runners: 7 SP: 9/1 Volatile Analyst had already run over the Knavesmire a week prior where he was seen finishing 9th. He clearly benefited from that run and the step down in trip to win nicely under Callum Rodriguez.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Through no fault of his own, Swiss Ace unshipped his jockey at Nottingham last time and, having looked a horse to follow when bolting up at Newcastle on his penultimate start, Ruth Carr’s gelding can figure prominently granted a proper run at things. However, C&D winner NORTHERN EXPRESS produced another commendable effort when runner-up at Thirsk on his latest start and, with the potential of more to come, gets the vote. Three-year-old Aleezdancer attracted market support at Chester on his reappearance and cannot be ruled out.

See page 77 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION We remain in handicap conditions and to freshen the available pool, it is only open to those who are aged three. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 80 means that though these ones are still quality performers, they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar. If a horse is ridden by an apprentice then it is given an allowance in weight which varies depending on the record of the particular rider, notice how Fourth Time Lucky shoulders 5lb less weight as his partner is apprentice, Oisin McSweeney.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A tentative vote is for BIN HAYYAN. David O’Meara’s charge came up against some smart rivals in maiden company, where he opened his account at the third time of asking, before an unsuccessful handicap debut behind the now 109-rated Flaming Rib (selection was sent off 5-2). Sunset And Vine makes plenty of appeal in a first-time visor after a creditable effort at Goodwood in April, while the consistent Way To Win is likely to be in the mix too.

COPPER KNIGHT:
JOINT WINNING-MOST HORSE HERE EYES ON OUR THIRD RACE WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER SEVEN. The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his six races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come. He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb sixth victory came at last year’s Ebor Festival. A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet! At last week’s Dante Festival both the Michael Dods trained Dakota Gold and the mighty Stradivarius joined Copper Knight with a record equalling sixth win, will Copper Knight go one better today? HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE A BIG SPRINT HANDICAP? THE WILLIAM HILL BEST ODDS GUARANTEED HANDICAP
This afternoon’s William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with fourteen closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of? Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology. Narrowing down the field of fourteen declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horses most recent form. Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Lipsink, who is rated 87 is considered 1lb “better” than Ey Up It’s Maggie who is rated 86. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight theoretically Lipsink should win every time as he is the better horse. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field. So in this example Lipsink carries 1lb more than Ey Up It’s Maggie which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the fourteen runners – but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all fourteen runners cross the line together so how to separate them in advance? Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into. Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it! 42
1) FORM Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few who come here without having the best of recent records and so might be best ignored today; Atalis Bay, Lipsink & Showalong. 2) THE DRAW Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running straight. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn down the centre of the track have often held the upper hand, the counter logic being that their jockey can keep an eye on the competition on both flanks. Perhaps Venterous can use this to his advantage. 3) DISTANCE Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable. Sadly not much help in this particular race as all of those in today’s field have had a win, never mind a run over the distance. 4) GROUND If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. Look Out Louis is one who will enjoy a quicker surface. However Ey Up It’s Maggie’s wins have come on a surface that is a little softer. So make sure to check the weather and the ground description. 5) YORK RECORD “Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground, the same can hold true for our equine athletes; Illusionist, Alligator Alley & Copper Knight all winning over course and distance. 6) CONCLUSION Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Going on a hunch that ‘good’ will be the description, the David O’Meara-trained Alligator Alley might well continue his consistent form and could take all the beating. He loves the six furlongs here at York and should get his favourite surface. He has been runing well as of late and a win is surely just around the corner.

RACE DESCRIPTION We continue in handicap conditions, remember the best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated horse; Atalis Bay is at the top of the weights on this occasion. Five furlongs is the shortest distance in UK racing so don’t blink as they flash home. Looking for help? Follow the red bi plane through the card for the racecourse tipster’s recommendations.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A chance is given to SUNDAY SOVEREIGN, who was narrowly denied when second in this race last year. He comes into this off a 1lb lower mark than 12 months ago and is a tentative selection. Michael Dods won this with Pendleton last year and is represented by Jawwaal and Sir Titus this time around, and both are considered. C&D winner Alligator Alley has run well on both starts for David O’Meara and is respected too.

RACE DESCRIPTION The newest Pattern race at York, the Group 3 contest is a valuable prize (£90,000), as well as offering the prestige of “black type”. That desire for competition limits the race to horses of the same sex, being all females. The intention is to tempt connections into a longer career on the track for such thoroughbreds before a second life as a broodmare. All the runners start off the same weight as none have won at a yet higher level. Who will be the winner and join Precious Ramotswe on the first page of the history of the race? See what the Press think on their selections board by the Winner’s Enclosure.

KNAVESMIRE TIP SILENCE PLEASE may be on a losing streak that dates back to June 2020, but she is a very capable mare on her day, including when finishing runner-up to Tarnawa in a Group 3 last August. The daughter of Gleneagles is entitled to improve on her first effort for new connections and she can get the better of last year’s second Urban Artist and Mighty Blue, who shaped well on her return at Gowran. Believe In Love was runner-up in a Group 1 in the autumn and is another who warrants serious consideration.

IN MEMORY OF PHOEBE H. JOHNSON Tragically, on 23 October 2021 our daughter was killed in a single vehicle, road traffic collision 10 days before her 18th Birthday. My wife and I are sponsoring this race in memory of Phoebe. Phoebe was studying Sport at College and like everyone in the family, she loved sports, it was in her blood. Like the thoroughbreds on show today, she could also run like the wind. Her Dad, Paul was a former professional footballer and captain of York City FC. Her Mum, Nicola heralds from Dringhouses and she was an avid City supporter, travelling to both home and away matches. John Byrne was her favourite player, apart from Husband, Paul of course. Phoebe loved the races and regularly attended the York enclosures with her Mum, Dad, Granddad Fred and the rest of the family. She would be absolutely livid for missing today’s meeting, especially as two of her best friends, Jake
60
and Imogen are in attendance, but we hope she is looking down on the racecourse with a smile on her face. York Racecourse has always been good to the family, and their assistance in planning this event has been seamless. We would like to thank everyone at York Racecourse for their support and for providing the perfect setting, for this, a celebration of our daughter’s short, but fulfilling life. A Go Fund me page has been set up in the name of our daughter and monies raised will be donated to several charities.

(For Horses In Bands A, B, C And D) (EBF Restricted Race Qual.) (GBB RACE)
Six Furlongs (1,200 metres) See page 77 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION This one is limited to the babies of the game, aged just two; they don’t have much if any track experience hence the term “novice”. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. When they were bought, at a recognised auction, the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and so potential, the most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,OOO bands thereafter. Any horse in higher Band racing in opposition to one from a lower Band must start by carrying two pounds in extra weight (see Northcliff compared to Bradsell); if a horse from a yet lower Band is in the same race, then the Band B horse carries two pounds more than the Band C contestant, meaning any Band A horse would be carrying four pounds (2+2) more than their Band C rival (so throw Glendown into the mix, as a Band C example). If this all sounds a bit complicated then a pin is a proven method in these races.is your choice of “P”s, pedigree or pin.
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: THE ORGANISER Trainer: Joseph Tuite Jockey: Cam Hardie Age/Weight: 2-8-13 Runners: 8 SP: 11/2 Joseph Tuite’s charge lowered the flags of some more fancied rivals in some quite taking style. KNAVESMIRE TIP LOOKING FOR LYNDA showed plenty of promise when second on debut at Ayr and followed that up with a convincing all-the-way win at Nottingham. He certainly wasn’t stopping on that latest outing so the extra furlong looks ideal and he can strike again. Northcliff was staying on over the stiff 5f at Hamilton so could be better at this trip, though a bigger danger could be Just Janet, who overcame a slow start to take third at Yarmouth on debut. Perfect Play looks the pick of the newcomers.

YOUR COUNTY REGIMENT Once again, it is our pleasure to be part of an exciting weekend of racing at the Knavesmire and as Colonel of the Regiment, I am proud to able to say to racegoers, that Yorkshire’s Infantry are in a good place with lots to look forward to in the coming years.
Brigadier ZR Stenning OBE
After 330 years on the front line, we proudly remain and are uniquely, the only county regiment in the British Army’s Order of Battle and the recent announcement of the Army’s ‘Future Soldier’ programme, has provided the regiment with some new and exciting roles. The 2nd Battalion return from Cyprus in Summer 2022 and will be at the core of a new, Army Experimentation and Trials Group as the Army’s Next Generation Combat Team, an exciting prospect to look forward to.
The future looks bright for ‘Your County Regiment’ and our aim is simple, it is to; ‘deliver the most capable and lethal Infantry Regiment for the British Army’. And at the same time, we will continue to strengthen our bonds with the county that we come from and represent. Following on from today, please come and cheer us along at the National Armed Forces Day at Scarborough on 25 June, when we will be representing the Army and take the time to visit our stands at the Great Yorkshire Show 12-15 July.
At home here in Yorkshire, the 1st Battalion will become Light Mechanised Infantry with an interesting and varied operational training programme to look forward to over the next 5 years. Our Yorkshire and Teesside-based 4th Battalion Reserves completed a 4-month tour of duty over Christmas on operations in Kenya and going forward, they will be working more closely with the 1st Battalion and other regular forces on exercises and operations.

They are a military wind band based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and provide musical support to The Yorkshire Regiment and the British Army both at home and abroad.
The Band also performed in France at D-Day 75 as well as delivering digital tributes to Dame Vera Lynn and Remembrance 2020 - all of which achieved national recognition. In June, they will be performing at the British Normandy Memorial in France, in Tunisia, and on 25 June, they will be leading the parade at Scarborough Armed Forces Day.
The Band is an integral part of 4th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment and is made up of Army Reserve Musicians. In recent years the Band has performed at the Loreley Military Tattoo on the Rhine in Germany and at the ever-popular annual Festival of Remembrance in Huddersfield Town Hall. In late 2018 they deployed to Lithuania in support of the British Embassy and performed an equally successful series of engagements in Denmark the following year.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Blenheim Boy won impressively on his return to action at Ripon and the son of Churchill is likely to enter the reckoning once again, despite a 10lb rise from the handicapper. Maplewood and Golden Voice boast similar profiles, having both won their respective third starts, and the pair are both open to considerable improvement now in handicap company. The vote, though, goes to BULLET FORCE, who finished second in a good Newmarket handicap at the Guineas meeting and he represents a stable who are currently in fine form.

7f Handicap 61-80 £20,000 4+ Farside
About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres) See page 77 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION No easy out, as another ticklish handicap sets our final race, only this time the trip is seven furlongs and the ratings cap a little lower at 80. The biggest burden goes to Mykonos St John. If you want to take a chance on one , before tonight’s concert, maybe deploy your favourite colours. Remember you can come back as soon as tomorrow to display your new found knowledge (or dance moves).

KNAVESMIRE TIP It could pay to side with MAYWAKE in a fiercely competitive handicap. Richard Fahey’s gelding has done nothing but improve in eight career starts to date and ended last season with a couple of victories on the all-weather at Newcastle. The Musley Bank handler is likely to have his charge fairly wound up on return and, with top apprentice Harry Davies taking a handy 7lb off his back, a bold bid likely beckons. Safran and Tamaska are both interesting for David O’Meara, while Mykonos St John also warrants respect.
