Welcome A very warm welcome back to the Knavesmire for the second day of our 2022 season. It is such a pleasure for everyone at York to be able to welcome back racegoers to enjoy this Dante Festival, for the first time since 2019! York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport and to attracting the best horses to race for your entertainment. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is £1.35m, meaning a six-figure increase on 2019, with every race worth £20,000 or more. All eight of the Pattern grade contests see a significant increase on their 2019 values, up to record levels. With a record £500,000 in prize money on offer for today’s seven race card, we are set to see some wonderful horses with two Group 2 contests both backed by Al Basti Equiworld Dubai. With prize money for the Dante at a record level of £175,000 it is the richest race of its type in Britain. Ten colts have gone on from winning on the Knavesmire to claim the Epsom Classic – most recently Golden Horn in 2015. There have been 76 Derbys since Dante himself last won the blue riband for the north under the care of Matt Peacock in Middleham – today we will find out if Royal Patronage might follow in his hoofprints, hailing from Mark Johnston’s neighbouring yard. Were Dark Moon Rising to land a famous double out of Kevin Ryan’s Hambleton yard it would be a first for that part of the county. Both would be entering a Derby betting market currently dominated by contenders from Aidan O’Brien’s County Tipperary yard, he’ll be hoping that Bluegrass joins that band today. Notebooks or iPad to the ready wherever you look today as six elite fillies’ and mares undertake the six-figure staging of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton and the aspiring sprinters lock horns in what is the British Stallion Studs EBF Westow Stakes. History books to the ready if Copper Knight lands our opening race, as he will set a new record of seven wins on the Knavesmire. This prize money can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. Many thanks to Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Paddy Power, Fidomoney, The Frank Whittle Partnership and The European Breeders’ Fund, for their valuable backing. York is proud to be a long-term partner of Racing Welfare; this week sees a deserved focus on Mental Health Awareness Week within the sport, in conjunction with the charity Mind. If you look closely, you may notice racecourse and stable staff are wearing green ribbons today in support of this important issue. The team have been busy preparing for your return, the Champagne Pavilion has been given a fresh new look, whilst on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand the renamed 1731 Pie Shop both celebrates the year when racing started on the Knavesmire and serves a range of home-made goodies. If we are blessed with the weather than both of the County Stand Garden and Roberto Village Bar offer a speed of service with nearby outside seating. A final welcome to our newly appointed equine ambassador, Remy. Now aged thirteen, the retired racehorse will be better known to fans of the sport as Goldream, the dual Group One winning sprinter for Robert Cowell. Now part of the team at New Beginnings, a local charity that helps horses with new careers once their racing days have drawn to a close, he is based with some pals in the Clocktower Enclosure today. Yesterday was a day for Frankie Dettori and John & Thady Gosden. The duo combined with Emily Upjohn, the now Epsom Oaks favourite and hugely promising Samburu. I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION THE 1895 DUKE OF YORK CLIPPER LOGISTICS STAKES (GROUP 2)
John Quinn’s star sprinter Highfield Princess ran home a ready winner of 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Logistics. It gave the local winner a first win in the race and a first win for Yorkshire since Kevin Ryan in 2012. She had already run twice at the track and her form read well over a furlong further. She fairly bolted out of the stalls once they opened and Jason Hart looked to have his hands full from flag fall to keep her from getting away from him. Roger Varian’s latest acquisition Dragon Symbol was close in behind and travelled well for a long way. He just seemed to lack a bit of race fitness and should come on leaps and bounds for the run. While his race was ran, Highfield Princess was only just getting going and despite being keen she found an extra gear to get her rivals reaching for their sticks. Minzaal caught the eye as he travelled well into the race under Jim Crowley but couldn’t quite pick up in the same style and may even benefit from a furlong further. Coming into the final furlong the eventual winner extended clear again and try as he might, Spycatcher just couldn’t bridge the gap for Karl Burke. There is no getting away from quite how an impressive she was in the end and it’s great to see another top-class mare coming to win races on the Knavesmire. We look forward to seeing where she might turn up next!

THE TATTERSALLS MUSIDORA STAKES (GROUP 3)
Emily Upjohn was a quite emphatic winner of this year’s Tattersalls Musidora Stakes. Trained by John & Thady Gosden, she was well found in the market and duley obliged by an eased down five lengths. Emily Upjohn doesn’t look to be the most straight forward of rides and she still has a lot to learn but she clearly has talent in abundance. Before the race she was very much the punters pick but she still needed to go and show what she was all about on the track! Frankie looked to be in more of a wrestling match that a horse race on the daughter of Sea The Stars and he was forced to go slightly wider than he would have ideally liked to have been. Rob Hornby took them along at a good pace on Luna Dorada but she found front running at this level a little too much and dropped back through the field. Dettori loomed up alongside going much the best and quickly began to put lengths between him and his rivals in quite taking style. Life Of Dreams stayed on gallantly on only her second start on the track and she could well improve again but this race was all about the winner. Last year we saw Snowfall win this race before going onto Epsom Oaks glory and if the market reaction is anything to go by, Emily Upjohn could be the next superstar. After the race, Frankie said after that she ‘passed a good test today’ and praised her attitude as she didn’t see another rival for the final three furlongs. She certainly looks an exciting prospect.

P U Z Z L E CORNER GUESS WHO?
Hurricane Lane won last year’s Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes but who is seen finishing second?
WHO AM I?

I was born in 1951 and have trained over 3000 winners. I have recently taken out a joint ownership license with my son and have trained three winner of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes in the last ten years.
2.
I hail from a stable that has had plenty of success over the Knavesmire. I’m a son of Nathaniel and run in the same silks as a Juddmonte International Stakes second.
3.
Born in 2000, I ride a lot for Richard Hannon and new owners Amo Racing Limited. My biggest win came on Kinross in the Lennox Stakes and I’m still chasing a Group One.

If you can name the jockey on both occasions you will earn yourself a bonus point. 4. With the FA Cup Final on the sporting horizon, which winning teams share their name with a racecourse? Apologies to a football mad city but Aintree doesn’t count! 5. Which trainer had a double on Dante day 2021, name the winners?

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T
There are various points and different ways to bet here at York. 1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower. PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe. COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

COPPER KNIGHT:
JOINT WINNING-MOST HORSE HERE EYES ON OUR FIRST RACE WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER SEVEN. The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his six races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come. He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb sixth victory came at this year’s Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival. A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet! Yesterday the Michael Dods trained Dakota Gold joined Copper Knight with a record equalling sixth win, will Copper Knight go one better today? Race Name

RACE DESCRIPTION Day Two begins with a Paddy Power backed handicap. Such races are designed for close competition with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best on past performance will be the highest rated horse,Good Effort here, and so will carry most weight. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see how Copper Knight (who claims a record six “c”s) and Bedford Flyer are just two of this field to have both. Good luck in starting with a winner!
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: COPPER KNIGHT Trainer: Tim Easterby Jockey: James Sullivan Age/Weight: 7-8-6 Runners: 17 SP: 11/2J Copper Knight successfully defended his crown in this ultra-competitive handicap and won strongly under a fine ride by James Sullivan.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Raasel made it six wins from his last seven starts when scoring at Goodwood and, despite a further 7lb rise, he must enter calculations. Copper Knight has won six times here, including the last couple of runnings of this race, and he holds obvious claims, while Newbury second Mountain Peak also warrants respect. However, at the prices, a chance is taken on ALLIGATOR ALLEY. He won a Listed race over C&D when trained by Joseph O’Brien and made a pleasing stable/seasonal debut when third at Wolverhampton in March.

INTRODUCTION The Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Stakes has a rich tradition of attracting the very best older middle-distance fillies and mares from across Europe. The recent roll of honour includes the Oaks winner Sariska and the multiple Group 1 winner for Juddmonte, Midday. BETTING It is safe to say that this isn’t a race in which taking a chance on an outsider has proved successful. In the last ten years, there have been six winning favourites and only one horse has won the race at a double figure price. TRAINERS Since the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton was first run in 1981, its prestige has increased from Listed status to Group 2 and therefore it may be unfair to group past winners into the same category. However, Sir Michael Stoute holds the best record in the race overall with seven winners. The likes of John Gosden, Ralph Beckett and Andrew Balding have all saddled winners in recent years.

RECENT FORM Recent history indicates that fresh horses tend to go well in this race, but only five of the last ten winners were making their seasonal reappearance. When it comes to previous form it is a difficult race to weigh up as it has continued to improve in quality. However, it is noticeable that since it was upgraded to a Group 2, seven of the nine winners were winners at Group 3 level or higher. OFFICIAL RATING Again, it isn’t entirely straightforward when it comes to the official ratings of the past winners because as the race has grown in stature so has the calibre of its runners. However, even accounting for this, the cut-off point would appear to be 110 suggesting that the top rated fillies are the group to focus on. The highest rated tunner this year is the Irish raider Thunder Kiss. KEY TRENDS Top two in the market Aged four or five Trained by Sir Michael Stoute
CONCLUSION The obvious place to start would be with the two Sir Michael Stoute runners. The first of these Noon Star finished second in the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes last year to the subsequent Cazoo Epsom Oaks winner Snowfall. Mrs John Harrington and Ger Lyons send two across the Irish sea to try and take the winnings back to Ireland however it is with Sir Michael Stoute’s other runner that the selection lies. Ville De Grace was just touched off on her last start, but the quick turn around would suggest she is ready to go again. She has gained valuable experience and like all of Stoute’s, should improve for the run! Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 40

One Mile, Two Furlongs About 88 Yards (2,000 metres) See page 77 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Stakes over one mile two furlongs is towards the pinnacle of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, it forms part of the second of four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. This race is restricted to 4yo plus fillies and mares. Given its Pattern prestige, it is part of a broader strategy to keep such horses racing rather than connections choosing to retire them for breeding. Ed Chamberlain and the team from ITV will be having a close at them in the Parade Ring, so why not join them.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Sir Michael Stoute is seeking his eighth win in this race and holds a strong hand, with the unexposed Noon Star entitled to build on her recent win in Listed company at Nottingham. However, her stablemate VILLE DE GRACE was only narrowly denied in the Dahlia at Newmarket on her return and, with further improvement still possible, the daughter of Le Havre may have the edge. Irish raiders Thunder Kiss and Forbearance also boast impressive profiles and shouldn’t be far away either.

KNAVESMIRE TIP ISLA KAI’s record since being upped to a mile speaks for itself and he is entitled to strip fitter for an excellent run in the Spring Cup last month. Nigel Tinkler’s charge doesn’t hang about and he may be hard to pass up front, with Redcar winner Lightening Company looking a big danger off a featherweight. Trais Fluors was unlucky not to get a clear run at Thirsk last time out and can have a say along with the likes of top-weight Brunch, Cruyff Turn and La Trinidad.

DANTE:
THE HOPE OF THE NORTH
Dante wins the Derby, June 1945
Foaled on March 7, 1942, he was by Nearco out of Rosy Legend and an inauspicious visit to the ring saw him fail to make his 3,500 gns reserve, and no buyer responded to a sale by public advertisement. So he was put into training with Matt Peacock by his owner, Sir Eric Ohlson. We welcome members of the Ohlson family with us today. Dante enjoyed a blemish-free juvenile season, a winning debut at Stockton in April and five further successes including the Coventry Stakes and Middle Park Stakes. Come 1945, a successful pipe opener and he was aimed at the 2000 Guineas but preparations were interrupted when the horse’s left eye clouded over just before the first classic. Consequently sent to Newmarket short of gallop, Dante experienced his first defeat when Lord Astor’s Court Martial got the better of him by a neck. Some onlookers felt that had the challenge come on Dante’s right, he would have responded quicker. Legendary punter and founder of Timeform, Phil Bull, was not deterred and as the Middleham star drifted to 10/1, he went into the ring, backing Dante to win £14,000!
Matt Peacock 52
Due to WWII the 1945 Derby was run at Newmarket’s July Course. Dante was set to reoppose Court Martial. Meyrick Good, writing in the Sporting Life commented “I expect to see Dante, Midas, and Court Martial draw away from the field and for the winner I select Dante.” It was to prove an inspired summary as Dante became Middleham’s first Derby winner since Pretender won the 1869 renewal. Midas finished second, with Court Martial in third. His victory was celebrated in Middleham, where the church bells toiled, a Dante Ball held and winning jockey Nevett carried shoulder-high through the streets. Dante was then targeted for the St Leger, to be run here on the Knavesmire that September, he was rated an even-money favourite. However, rumours were that all was not well and they proved correct as on August 25 he was withdrawn. Chamossaire, won at York in his absence. The records show that the eye problems which had blighted the challenge for the 2000 Guineas had returned and indeed worsened. Dante was virtually blind in both eyes and so retired to stand at Theakston Stud, Bedale. Dante had a successful if comparatively brief stud career. Among his high-class winners were Darius (2000 Guineas and Eclipse Stakes), Carrozza (Oaks), and Discorea (Irish Oaks). This great horse died at Theakston in 1956. In all, Dante won eight of his nine starts. Dante remains the last Middleham, indeed last northern trained, horse to win the Derby. The success of Permian from Mark Johnston’s Stable in the town in the 2017 Dante as well as the presence of Gear Up from the same Kingsley House base today offers encouragement that a new chapter in the sporting history of the town is being written. So Dante was reared in Yorkshire – lived there all his life – and retired to stud at Theakston Stud, Bedale.

A SPECIAL TROPHY FOR A SPECIAL RACE: THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI DANTE Born in Ireland and raised amongst thoroughbreds in County Tipperary, Jody Keating’s love of the horse was obvious to those who knew him. As a young man, Jody travelled the globe working on some of the very best stud farms in Italy, Ireland and the New Zealand before settling outside Newmarket in the village of Cheveley where he manages a boutique stud and lives with his wife Manuela and their two girls, Rebecca and Niamh. Jody is a self-taught accomplished artist, whose creations are scattered around the world. In the past few years, Jody has specialised in wire sculpting, predominantly of animals. He uses chicken wire, a humble and versatile material which he sources from local people and businesses, who are happy to donate their waste material knowing that it will be recycled and transformed into beautiful and lasting objects. Jody worked, in his spare time for almost a month spending 40 hours with chicken wire that was previously used on a thatched roof in his local village to create today’s Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Group 2 Dante Stakes Trophy.

FACT FILE:
Where does the race name come from?
Only two Northern-trained horses have won the Cazoo Derby; Pretender way back in 1869 and Dante. Both trained at Middleham, the latter by Matt Peacock to Classic success in 1945.
WHAT HOODOO? Only one horse beaten at York has ever won the Cazoo Derby, Workforce, second behind Cape Blanco in 2010, became a Blue Riband winner and so a hoodoo breaker.
OH LA LA TO BE SURE!
One mile, two furlongs and 56 yards (2,050 metres)
Prize money £175,000
FIRST WINNER?
Bald Eagle justified favouritism in 1958 for Newmarket trainer Sir Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and his jockey Harry Carr.
Why is it considered a Classic Trial?
Simples - since 1958, ten York winners have won at Epsom; St Paddy (1960), Shirley Heights (1978), Shahrastani (1986), Reference Point (1987), Erhaab (1994), Benny The Dip (1997), North Light (2004), Motivator (2005), Authorized (2007) and Golden Horn (2015).
After sealing glory here in 2014 The Grey Gatsby landed the Prix du Jockey Club (or French Derby) at Chantilly. The following year saw Jack Hobbs second on the Knavesmire, but a Classic winner at the Curragh, with Hurricane Lane, the 2021 winner at York, following in his classic footsteps last year when winning the St Leger.
LUCK OF THE IRISH? ANY NEAR MISSES?
They drew a blank in the first 40 years and all bar Aidan O’Brien, still have; the Ballydoyle maestro scored with Saratoga Springs (1998), Septimus (2006), Black Bear Island (2009) then Cape Blanco (2010). The honour of the Emerald Isle rests with Bluegrass this year.
Tartan Bearer
Rheingold was beaten just inches by Roberto in 1972 and the Millennium winner Sakhee was only 150 yards from Derby victory before being headed late on by Sinndar. The 2008 renewal saw Tartan Bearer go down by just half a length to New Approach and Libertarian was fast finishing for his runners up berth.
LEADING TRAINERS?
The late Sir Henry Cecil
The late Sir Henry Cecil holds the record for having won this race seven times – Approval (1970), Lyphard’s Wish (1979), Hello Gorgeous (1980), Simply Great (1982), Claude Monet (1984), Reference Point (1987) and Tenby (1993). Sir Michael Stoute, John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien all have four wins in the race to their names. So success for any of Desert Crown, Magisterial or Bluegrass would reduce Sir Henry’s lead.
LEADING RIDER?
Pat Eddery
The late Pat Eddery managed six wins whilst Ryan Moore has the best record of the current crop with three. Frankie Dettori would join him on that mark were Magisterial to win this afternoon.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Established in the year 1998, Al Basti Equiworld has, within a short span of time, become the pioneers in equine industry to Middle East and expanded across the globe. They have always recommended and introduced the best quality natural products which have had a very good response from the industry and are the distributors for leading companies such as Baileys Horse Feeds and Foran Equine Products.
How do local trainers fare? Poorly, until the turn of this decade. However, Libertarian broke the County’s duck for trainer Elaine Burke in 2013. The Grey Gatsby made it two in a row for the White Rose courtesy of Hambleton based Kevin Ryan in 2014. It was back to winning ways in 2017, when the Mark Johnston trained Permian prevailed and Thunderous gave the yard a third success last season. This year, Royal Patronage represents the Middleton yard, while Dark Moon Rising is saddled by Kevin Ryan from Hambleton. Kevin Ryan

INTRODUCTION Arguably the leading trial for next month’s Cazoo Derby is this afternoon’s Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes and it is usually won by a very smart middle-distance performer. The roll of honour includes North Light (2004), Motivator (2005), Authorized (2007) and Golden Horn (2015) who have all followed up at Epsom having won here. Roaring Lion went onto win four Group 1’s and last year’s champion Hurricane Lane won the St Leger, so it’s a good guide for the season! BETTING Although Hurricane Lane was a short enough price twelve months ago, prior to Roaring Lion’s win in 2018 the last winning favourite was Authorized in 2007 – so clearly the ‘jolly’ doesn’t always get things their own way in this race. Libertarian caused a major shock when landing the spoils at 33/1 back in 2013 but he is the only last ten years to have gone off bigger than 12/1. TRAINERS Of the trainers with runners this afternoon, Sir Michael Stoute has the best record having saddled six winners, his most recent victory coming courtesy of Carlton House in 2011. However, Mark Johnston and John Gosden also have strong records with five winners apiece, so be sure to keep an eye on their runners this afternoon.

JUVENILE FORM Only a handful of the previous winners had Pattern form as a two-year-old so perhaps proven form at this level is not as important as it once was. However, despite Telecaster winning this race in 2019, he was only the third winner in the last decade who did not run as a two-year-old, which suggests that the later maturing types tend to struggle in this contest. RECENT FORM Contesting a Group race as a prep run for this race often pays dividends – a pattern worth bearing in mind when going through this year’s field. It also seems best to side with those arriving in form, with those who had finished in the top three and ran to form last time out favoured by the trends. KEY TRENDS Trained by John Gosden Group Form as two-year-old Single figure SPs
CONCLUSION Aidan O’Brien seems blessed with an endless list of potential Epsom Derby winners and looks to have another potential contender in Bluegrass. John & Thady Gosden have a strong record in this race, so their runner Magisterial must carry a lot of respect and Frankie Dettori will hoping to add another win to his name. Desert Crown is the obvious pick to give Sir Michael Stoute yet another win in the race but punters may remember we thought the same about Highest Ground. The selection is the Yorkshire based Royal Patronage, who looks to have been overlooked by the market! Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 58

RACE DESCRIPTION Another Group 2 and like the Cazoo Derby, the race is restricted to three-year-olds and is known as a Classic ‘trial’. A true test of natural ability, all are set to carry the same weight. Given up on your own judgement, then look for the red bi plane that denotes the selection of the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand. If you think you know the winner then place your Epsom bet before the race as the winner’s odds will tumble by 3.37pm, given that ten colts have already done this double.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Desert Crown made a pleasing start to his career when running out a comfortable winner at Nottingham in November and he has been supported for the Derby in recent weeks. Sir Michael Stoute has won this contest six times in the past, but the concern has to be a lack of experience. The vote goes to MAGISTERIAL, who backed up his juvenile victory at Haydock under a penalty at Leicester and the son of Frankel is capable of further progression. El Bodegon and Bluegrass appear best of the remainder.

A CLASSIC TROPHY One of the most coveted piece of silverware in Flat racing, the Cazoo Derby trophy was specially commissioned by Epsom Downs Racecourse as a perpetual memento for the owner of the winning horse. Containing the names of past winners, including some ten colts who also won today’s feature at York, so dating back to the inaugural running of The Derby in 1780, the trophy was created by equine sculptor Charlie Langton and inspired by the unique undulations of Epsom Downs. Three silver horses are depicted galloping over a sweeping, circular base, Langton having drawn the idea from watching the horses descend through Tattenham Corner.

RACE DESCRIPTION This Listed race aims to give a competitive run to high quality 3yo sprinters who may struggle against their elders this early in the season, in Pattern races, yet are already beyond most handicaps. A European Breeders’ Fund race, meaning that all the horse’s sires are registered in Europe with the EBF. The scheme is to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe. If judgement of form has failed you so far today, it might be time to just try your favourite colours; it has been known to pay a dividend in such races.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A competitive event but the vote goes to PROJECT DANTE, who produced a game performance over C&D when winning by a head on his racecourse debut last season. Bryan Smart’s colt then finished close up behind dual Group 1 winner Perfect Power in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot before two lesser efforts at Newmarket at Ayr. However, the son of Showcasing has had wind surgery since and he can bounce back to form on his seasonal reappearance. Boonie is feared most following his comfortable success at Nottingham last month, while the class-dropping Khunan should be competitive in this company. Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien were a lethal combination at last week’s Boodles May Festival and they are represented by King Of Bavaria, though he will need to take a step forward to get involved.

RACE DESCRIPTION This maiden race is dedicated to 2yo horses that have yet to win, so is again a level weights affair, save for the allowance afforded the three fillies such as, Ubettabequick. Given this lack of experience the horses have not been awarded a handicap mark yet. The same EBF eligibility criteria apply as for our previous race. In tipping terms, it is a choice of the “Ps”, pedigree or pin.

KNAVESMIRE TIP In this fascinating contest it may pay dividends to side with QUEEN OLLY, who represents a stable in top form with their juveniles this term. The 300,000-euro purchase is a half-sister to the useful Schooner Ridge and it would be no surprise to see her shed the maiden tag at the first time of asking. Thunder Cat’s dam was an exceptional juvenile, landing the Group 2 May Hill Stakes, and the son of Roaring Lion rates the most immediate danger. Match Play gave a good account when third on racecourse debut and he completes the shortlist.

RACE DESCRIPTION As the longest race of the Festival, the start is on the home straight and the horses will pass the stands and then complete a further circuit of the track. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and here the upper rating of 90 means that the spotlight will not be stolen by a proven superstar. Perhaps the Press selections Board on the end of the Melrose Stand can guide you to farewell glory. If you are successful, then you can bask in the glory of picking up the last winner at York until at least 1.49pm tomorrow.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Ahorsewithnoname justified favouritism to win by three-quarters of a length on her last appearance, but gets a 6lb rise in the handicap as a result, so the reopposing fifth, Master Milliner, may not be as far behind her off these revised terms with that run under his belt. However, preference is for RAVENSCRAIG CASTLE, who retains the mark from an encouraging third-placed seasonal debut at Ripon last time, and he should relish the drier ground given his two wins have come on good and good to firm. Inca Prince is another who warrants respect, having run in some competitive hurdle races recently.
