Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
Form Guide
The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.
The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.
FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK
Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front
You must be 18 or over to place a bet
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

TODAY’S SELECTIONS
RACE ONE
In this modest contest JUKEBOX D’EDDY can capitalise on his four-year-old allowance and get off the mark at the fifth time of asking. The Tom Gretton-trained gelding recorded a career-best effort when finding only one rival too strong here latest and he may be able to go one better in similar company. If he fails to fire, it would be no surprise if Sonnemoser bounced back from his lacklustre performance at Haydock in December. Just Dottie is another to consider.
WIN: JUKEBOX D’EDDY DANGER: Sonnemoser
RACE TWO
SPRINGWELL BAY has only been beaten once over hurdles when failing to justify favouritism in Grade 2 company at Cheltenham in November. The six-year-old still gave a good account to finish third on that occasion and made amends in emphatic style when brushing aside his rivals at Ascot last month. The Jonjo O’Neill-trained gelding can continue his ascendancy at the expense of Hurricane Highway and Glory Hights.
WIN: SPRINGWELL BAY DANGER: Hurricane Highway
RACE THREE
The Skelton partnership boast an impressive strike-rate at this venue in the last five years and JET PLANE gets the nod to record a second victory over fences now eased in grade. Despite failing to fire at Hereford last time out, the handicapper has loosened his grip on the seven-year-old and he may be able to bounce back. Trapista is yet to get off the mark over fences but demands plenty of respect off this mark, while C&D winner Ladronne also warrants consideration.
WIN: JET PLANE DANGER: Trapista
RACE FOUR
HARTUR D’OUDAIRIES is the pick of the two JP McManus-owned runners and he has been found a suitable opening to get off the mark in handicap company. The selection impressed when winning a novices’ hurdle at Warwick in his four-year-old season and his two starts so far this term have been highly respectable. He is taken to be hard to beat with another step forward. Mcgowan’s Pass heads the list of dangers from Chti Balko.
WIN: HARTUR D’OUDAIRIES
RACE FIVE
DANGER: Mcgowan’s Pass
Alfa Mix’s Irish form stands up to scrutiny, despite him being 0-13 over fences so far, and he is worth noting on debut for a new yard. Famous Bridge is respected after winning over an extended 2m5f here 15 days ago and is taken to go well back up in trip. Preference, though, is for the consistent FIRST LORD DE CUET whose proven stamina earns him the nod on forecast going which should suit.
WIN: FIRST LORD DE CUET
RACE SIX
DANGER: Alfa Mix
There was little to split Heritier De Sivola (fourth) and GREAT RAFFLES (third) in a conditional riders’ race over C&D just after Christmas, but the latter might still be able to uphold the form. A winner over track and trip and potentially not done improving yet, the seven-yearold makes a good bit of appeal with Sean Bowen doing the steering. Rumble B is also a player
WIN: GREAT RAFFLES
RACE SEVEN
DANGER: Heritier De Sivola
Doc Mccoy is related to a few smart types and must hold every chance of building on a decent third at Southwell last time out, but HEY BROTHER shades the vote on his Rules debut having filled the runner-up spot in a point-to-point in November. A half-brother to Grade 1-winning hurdler Mick Jazz, he would be dangerous to dismiss and is taken to give a good account. Bhaloo is another to consider.
WIN: HEY BROTHER
DANGER: Doc Mccoy

LAST TIME OUT | Monday 6th March
We began the first of six competitive races with a race for conditional jockeys over the two miles, five and a half furlongs trip. Patrick Wadge put his claim to good use and Caboy got off the mark at the eighteen time of asking in Britain. He seemed to sprout wings on the run-in and shot clear of Fever Roque in the final 100 yards to continue the good form of the Lucinda Russell stable. Quick Sharpener looked the clear pick on previous form on paper and made a mockery of this field to make all The Dr Richard Newlandtrained six-year-old proved in a different class to his rivals and asserted his dominance from pilar to post, without coming off the bridle in this novice hurdle, eventually scoring by 10 lengths. This proved to be one of the easiest rides off Charlie Hammond’s career and he could be an exciting prospect.
Innisfree Lad travelled strongly in the lead for a long way in our Long Distance handicap chase, but it proved to side with the Lucinda Russell again as Your Own Story picked up the pieces late on. A patient but smart ride by Derek Fox over this mammoth trip (3m7f), the youngest horse in the race proved to be well-handicapped in the end of a mark of 117. He took the opportunity up against more exposed and older opposition, proving the step up to this trip was no issue, and bounded clear by 5 lengths.
It proved an excellent day for favourite backers as Jet Legs made it 3-4 for the horses who started at the top of the market. He broke his maiden tag at the ninth time of asking over hurdles and Theo Gillard’s 3lb claim proved enough to get the job done in handicap company. He was knocking on the door in similar class handicaps and ran down the runner up, Shot Boii, with time to spare. The eventual one length victor looks a strong stayer for Martin Todhunter, who seemed to appreciate this rapid ground.
The feature race on the card was a 0-140 handicap chase which did not disappoint. The eventual runner up Enzo D’airy ran with plenty of zest in front but probably did too much, too soon, and was run down by Famous Bridge in the closing stages. In the late Trevor Hemmings colours, Brain Hughes seemed to get this race spot on and took full advantage off the 4lb ease in the weights to overcome a bad mistake at the last to collar the leader. He shouldn’t go up much for this win and could prove handy again.
To conclude another fabulous day of racing, 7lb claimer Dylan Johnston got his fractions perfect to win from the front on Darkest Day He built on his effort at Musselburgh over further and appreciated the drop down in trip to just find enough on the run-in to repel the late challenge of the runner up Jukebox D’eddy.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100 and only conditonal jockey will be allowed to ride. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D Skelton (7 wins from 51 runners, 14%) runs JET PLANE
Longest Traveller: TRAPISTA trained by J O’Neill, Cheltenham, 170 miles.
RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 115 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 110.

The Sandra Finch Surprise Handicap Steeple Chase
10 years ago today, Sandra walked out of hospital when her family thought there was a chance she would not, following a month long stay which included a week in intensive care and five visits to the neuro theatre for brain surgery.
Sandra is a retired nurse, spending 43 years on the wards as a staff nurse, sister and matron, working within oncology.
Married to Chris for 44 years, with children Rebecca and Peter. We are delighted to have her & Chris with us here today. Sandra really enjoys her trips to the races and has visited all the courses in England, Scotland and Wales
The past ten years have flown by since her ‘head banger hiccup’ as she describes it, but she continues to live life to the full with plenty more opportunities for visits to the races to come.
We all hope you have a great day today!

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

HORSE WELFARE
Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.
During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.
It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACE DESCRIPTION As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.
