THURSDAY 4TH DECEMBER 2025

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2025

A very warm welcome to Wincanton Racecourse for our Military Raceday, which features the seventh running of the McCreery Military Amateur Jockeys’Hurdle.
The race is named after one of the great military jockeys, and a great soldier, General Sir Dick McCreery, a stalwart supporter of both Wincanton and The Blackmore Vale and whose family have such strong connections here It is a particular pleasure to welcome Jeanette McCreery here today to present his trophy. We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to John and Doone Chatfield-Roberts for so generously sponsoring the race for the seventh time
Today is the first of three Military Race Meetings in the National Hunt calendar giving military jockeys invaluable race experience ahead of the Grand Military Gold Cup and The Royal Artillery Gold Cup Meetings at Sandown Park in February 2026. There are many Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force units stationed around Wincanton as well as a large number of military veterans living nearby, many of whom we are delighted to see in attendance today It is our intention to build on the numbers over the future years making use of the great value hospitality on offer in our Marquee, giving those attending the opportunity of catching up with old friends while enjoying the wonderful day’s racing on offer
The McCreery Hurdle is the first race in today’s seven race card with generous sponsorship from Weatherbys, Priced Up and the Lenny Roberts family A massive thank you to them for their support to Wincanton and racing
Finally, thank you all for coming to support us today. We hope that you all really enjoy yourself and we look forward to welcoming you back again very soon
David Wiggin Wincanton Chairman

It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring two races on the card at Wincanton this afternoon and Nicky Henderson’s Final Straw sets a good standard in the WeatherbysStallionBook“NationalHunt” Novices’HandicapHurdle.
The Affinisea five-year-old made a winning handicap debut at Kempton in mid-November before scoring mightily impressively just a week later in a similar event at Plumpton, comfortably cruising to a seven-and-a-half length success. Although raised 7lbs for that here, he appeals as incredibly progressive and shouldgoonimproving.
Neil Mulholland, who trained the winner of this race 12 months ago, relies on Happy Returns here and, although the mare must race from 2lbs out of the handicap, she posted an encouraging runner-up finish at Fontwell on return and should improve for the outing. RobertWalfordsaddledthewinnertwoyears agoandisrepresentedbySnapdance, who makeshishandicapdebut.
West Orchard scored at the course over fences when last seen, but that was almost a year ago and he may just need the run here back over hurdles, whilst Staff Sergeant Len finished a good third over a shorter trip here at Wincanton last time and should appreciate this sterner staminatest,triedinafirst-timevisor.
A competitive field of seven go to post for the Weatherbys & Birdie Calendars Silver Buck Handicap Chase where Jeremy Scott’s Pilsdon Pen will bid for a third course and distance victory. The eight-year-old suffered an interrupted campaign last season but returns here backdowntohislastwinningmark.
Paul Nicholls’ Toothless relished the step up in trip when last seen at Plumpton, improving on three consecutive runnerup finishes to run out an impressive, wide-margin winner. That form has worked out an exceptionally strongly, so he looks well-treated from just a 6lb higher mark, however he does have an 18-monthlayofftoovercomeonreturn.
Scorsese looked to be travelling well in front before departing two from home at Fontwell last time but can continue his progression over fences if no worse for that fall here, whilst Kalif D’Airy ran out a ready winner on chase debut at Lingfield on reappearance last time and isanotherwhoisunexposedoverfences.
Anthony Honeyball’s Sea Invasion chases the hattrick having scored twice at Plumpton to close the last campaign. Whilst those victories came over further, the seven-year-old does have form over intermediatetripsandjusta2lbriseinthe weightsappearslenient.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Wincanton Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £288,948 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 15th September to 31st December 2025
