Race preview from Weatherbys The Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Novices’ Hurdle received a healthy 19 declarations and as such, has been split into two divisions. Despite having to carry a 6lb penalty, Dartmoor Pirate looks to be the standardsetter in Division 1. Anthony Honeyball’s five-year-old got off the mark over timber at the first time of asking when landing a soft ground maiden hurdle at Wincanton. From the same smart family as Baradari, the gelding showed an impressive turn of foot from the second last to go clear, ultimately powering to an 11-length success. He was no match for the 135-rated Tellherthename at Huntingdon last time, but he did finish best of the rest and there doesn’t look to be anything of that level in this field. The re-opposing Hawk Stone was 16 lengths behind that rival at Wincanton and looks to have a mammoth task to reverse the form, despite a swing in the weights. Sam Thomas’ Steel Ally displayed plenty of promise on hurdles debut at Ffos Las in November, travelling strongly into a fourlength lead before a costly mistake and stumble at the last halted all momentum and allowed the eventual winner to close him down. Back at that same track, the six-year-old was far too keen on his next start and pulled away any chance he had, eventually weakening and pulled up before the last. The son of Doctor Dino still holds plenty of potential if settling better and returning to the form of his hurdles debut. American Land returned from a lengthy absence when fourth in a maiden hurdle at Exeter in October, although his finishing effort did peter out rather quickly. Joe Tizzard’s six-year-old has since undergone wind surgery though, and both the third and fifth have advertised the form of that race with victories since. Twice a winner and fourth in a Listed contest behind subsequent Group 2 winner Assistent on the flat in France, Salvatore looked in need of the run when midfield in a Newbury maiden hurdle last time. With that run under his belt, the fiveyear-old is an interesting proposition for Harry Derham if transferring his flat ability to hurdles. WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW
Paul Nicholls’ Fire Flyer is likely to be popular in Division 2, and it is easy to see why. The six-year-old ran a great race to finish second in a strong Listed bumper at Cheltenham on seasonal bow, despite racing keenly and proving a difficult ride in the closing stages. His hurdles debut form, when chasing home recent Grade 2 scorer Gidleigh Park at Newbury, sets a good standard here and he could develop into a high-class novice hurdler for the champion trainer.
The drop back in trip for Fire Flyer should pose no issue. Georgina Nicholls’ Thank You Ma’am could pose the biggest danger to the favourite, the five-year-old chasing home some smart types in defeat the last twice. He chased home Secret Squirrel on his penultimate start at a massive price and that rival enhanced the form when second at Newbury behind a Grade 2 winner on his next start, so he should give another good account of himself. He may just find the trip a little sharp in today’s conditions, but will no doubt be staying on all the way to the line. Four-year-old Johannes was an impressive winner on his only start in France on the level but has struggled in his two starts over hurdles in the UK so far. He should come on for his latest run now having his second start following wind surgery though and he does receive plenty of weight from the rest of the field. Rated 74 on the flat for George Boughey, Hadley Park also benefits from the age allowance here, although Harry Derham’s gelding must bounce from a pulled-up effort at Newton Abbot last time. Zhang Fei, rated 70 on the flat, will have his first start over hurdles for Fergal O’Brien here. The six-year-old does not hail from a traditional jumping family, and it will be interesting how the Camelot gelding takes to obstacles.

Take Your Time
Race preview from Weatherbys It is a real pleasure to be sponsoring three races across the card this afternoon at Wincanton, including the ultracompetitive Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Handicap Chase for the Dick Hunt Trophy. Paul Nicholls landed the prize back in 2020 with Worthy Farm and the progressive Take Your Time looks to have a great chance of making it three from three over fences here. The nine-year-old struggled over hurdles last term but has looked a different proposition switched to fences, staying on stoutly to win on chase debut at Newton Abbot from a number of much more experienced rivals.
An 8lb rise may not be enough to halt Take Your Time’s upward trajectory. The Dubai Destination gelding then improved again from a 3lb higher mark to record a comfortable 13-length success over course and distance in December. The only concern would be the quicker conditions he will face here, with both of his chase victories coming on heavy ground. Copperhead, once rated as high as 155 and a Grade 2-winning novice chaser in 2020, could only finish a distant sixth in this contest last year but returns from a much-reduced mark this term. Although winless in almost four years, Joe Tizzard’s ten-year-old is 12lbs lower than he was in this contest last year and did record a course and distance success here in 2019. He ran well when third at Ascot last time but was just outpaced over the shorter trip, and this step up to beyond three miles will likely see him to better effect. Eleven-year-old Fidux is also on a growing winless streak, and his last victory was back in 2021 from a mark of 140 at Worcester. Alan King’s gelding posted an encouraging second at Doncaster WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW
last time though and arrives here on an unchanged mark of 122 with conditions set to be ideal. Top-weighted Quick Draw recorded a pair of impressive victories at Uttoxeter and Kempton last term over the intermediate trip and returned with an emphatic victory on his first start over three miles at Ludlow in October, making all on route to a 21-length success. He was allowed to dictate matters on the front end there though and struggled to lay up with the leaders when pulled up in a competitive handicap at Cheltenham last time, never travelling. Lord Accord was also pulled-up in that Cheltenham contest and was unable to bounce back when last of the finishers at Doncaster last time. The gelding will appreciate the quick surface here though and did run a career-best when second to Frodon over course and distance in the Badger Beer last term, a final fence mistake proving costly. Jacamar was twice a winner here at Wincanton over hurdles and, although without a win from three starts over fences here, has took the runner up spot in his last two chase starts at the track. A consistent performer over the intermediate trip across the past two seasons, Anthony Charlton’s gelding proved his stamina over this sort of trip when denied by just a neck at Plumpton last week. A winner from a 12lb higher mark last term, he looks to be well-handicapped for another crack at the extended trip. Fergal O’Brien’s Manothepeople looked an incredibly progressive staying novice chaser last term, landing his first two starts over fences in promising style. His form did begin to tail off at the end of the campaign, however he bounced right back to form on seasonal reappearance at Exeter when just failing to hold on from fast-finishing, race-fit rival. The form of that race was advertised at Cheltenham this weekend by the third, Lounge Lizard, but the nine-year-old must bounce back from two lesser efforts since.
