Raceday preview from Weatherbys It is a real pleasure to be sponsoring two races across the card this afternoon at Wincanton, including the Weatherbys & Birdie Calendars Handicap Hurdle, a Class 4 event staged over staged over just shy of two miles. It is a race that has been won by some smart types in recent years, including subsequent Grade 1 winner Scaramanga and last year’s Betfair Hurdle runner-up Filey Bay. Robert Walford trained the winner of this contest in 2018, and his Prince Quali heads the weights on stable debut here after transferring over from David Cottin in France. A winner over both fences and hurdles at Auteuil, the six-year-old could be leniently handicapped here on his first start in the UK from a mark of 119, with Harry Kimber taking off a further 3lbs in the saddle.

A winner over both fences and hurdles at Auteuil, the six-year-old could be leniently handicapped here The French import will appreciate the testing conditions, with wins on heavy ground, however he has been off the track for almost 600 days. The one likely to head the betting is the hattrick-seeking West End Boy, with Harry Cobden getting the leg up in the saddle for Joe Tizzard. Winless in three starts in maiden/novice company last term, the five-year-old jumped and WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW

travelled with much more fluency on handicap debut upon return over course and distance, powering to an impressive ten-length victory. The son of Westerner then backed that up with another comfortable success at Plumpton just a week later, with the second going on to boost that form with a victory from a 1lb higher mark at Huntingdon. This requires more up 11lb in the handicap, but he is a progressive young horse who looks to be trending in the right direction. The other course and distance winner in the field is No No Tonic for Mark Gillard, who is two from six over course and distance, the latest of those coming in December of last year. The mare loves it here at Wincanton, and an encouraging third at Taunton last time showed a return to form. Alan King’s four-year-old, Chandlers Bay, has only had the three starts over hurdles in his fledgling career but showed real promise when third in a strong maiden hurdle at Plumpton when last seen back in February. In behind was recent Cheltenham scorer Our Champ, so the form looks good, and a mark of 110 could underestimate him if able to build on that on seasonal reappearance. Fellow fouryear-old Despereaux chased home the smart Perseus Way at Huntingdon last term and whilst he has disappointed since stepping into handicap company, he still holds potential off a sliding mark. Aurigny Mill looked in need of the run, and lost a shoe, when coming home in midfield at Sandown on seasonal bow,

but his Taunton novice hurdle victory last term reads well, and he should improve with a run under his belt. We are also looking to forward to sponsoring the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Silver Buck Handicap Chase later in the afternoon, a Class 4 contest staged over the extended trip of 3m1f. With testing conditions expected, this could really place the emphasis on stamina for the eight-strong field. Plenty of these carry stamina in abundance, and both Nearly Perfect and Ede’iffs Elton are course and distance winners. The former, trained by Neil King, is two from four here at the track and clearly goes well here, however his last victory came in December of 2020 and he has been seen sparsely since. The latter, trained by Robert Walford, landed the Harry Dufosee Memorial Cup here in an impressive display where he powered to a 21-length victory. He hasn’t won since but has been reliably consistent and will no doubt improve for the run after being given a quiet ride over an inadequate trip on seasonal debut here, with the step back up in trip sure to suit. Colin Tizzard landed the spoils here three years on the bounce between 2019 and 2021, and son Joe sends Striking A Pose in his effort to regain the prize for the yard. The seven-year-old never looked comfortable when pulled up over course and distance on return and has since undergone wind surgery. A talented horse once rated as high as 135, he is now WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW

Not Sure has been a model of consistency for Kerry Lee over the last twelve months, winning three of his last five starts 20lbs lower but does have question marks around stamina at this trip. Not Sure has been a model of consistency for Kerry Lee over the last twelve months, winning three of his last five starts and coming home in the top three in the other two. The seven-year-old stayed on well to win on his second attempt at three miles, and the second has since ran with real credit in a top Haydock handicap, so he sets a high standard here despite a 7lb rise in the weights. Venetia Williams has been in fantastic form over the past month, and Eceparti looks to continue that good run as he chases the hattrick here. The nine-year-old has bags of stamina and has won both of his starts so far this season at Chepstow. The switch to prominent tactics appeared to have worked wonders, but he may not get it all his own way on the front end this time around. One will also be up on the pace is Take Your Time, for the prolific duo of Nicholls and Cobden. The eight-year-old made a successful start to life over fences when winning over an extended trip at Newton Abbott on chase debut. The form hasn’t worked out too well, but he will relish conditions and is the most unexposed in the field over the bigger obstacles with plenty of scope for improvement.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION Whilst we always endeavour to take appropriate steps to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is, therefore, important that you are aware

of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. We employ Safety Officials whose job it is to ensure your safety. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the Stands, announcements will be broadcast and the Officials will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the enclosure quickly and quietly under their guidance. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. It may give you peace of mind if you pre-plan and agree a meeting place with your party, just in case you become separated. If we are unable to reoccupy the Stands for any reason, you will be advised immediately, and, if it is considered safe to do so, you will be invited to return to your car or coach. These are precautionary arrangements which we trust will not be required. However, in the event of an emergency please remember; Take your belongings with you and under direction of the officials proceed quickly and quietly to the safe area then to your agreed rendezvous point or to your car or coach.

HEALTH AND SAFETY NOTICE The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Wincanton Racecourse. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand stepping are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the weighing room.

IMPORTANT

NOTICES

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Wincanton Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

CROSSING THE COURSE The centre of the course viewing is available to all Premier enclosure ticket holders. Please note you must stay within the designated area and access will not be allowed from the time horses are on the course until all horses have left the course. The only exception to this will be for owners and trainers with runners on the day and racecourse officials.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Racegoers may take photographs for private use within the areas normally open to the public. Flash photography is not permitted.
