JACK PARKINSON General Manager, Wincanton Racecourse

Welcome Welcome to Wincanton Racecourse. This racecard will provide you with all the information you will need for your time with us. Should you wish for information about future fixtures, please scan the QR code below. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Hello and Welcome to the 62nd Badger Beer Chase! As the oldest brewery to be owned by the same family throughout its history of 246 years it is totally appropriate that our beer brand Badger is the oldest sponsor in racing. Back in 1962 our mothers Sally and Susie persuaded our fathers that it would be great to join the likes of Whitbread and Hennessey in sponsoring a race. The first race was due to be run on Boxing Day in that year but months of snow and ice saw it eventually run at Wincanton in March 1963. Today is therefore a big day out for the Hall & Woodhouse family with over 400 Team Members, Shareholders and Pub Business Partners attending and we hope everyone enjoys it as much as we will! If you would like to know more about our history, our awardwinning Badger beers or our wonderful pubs please visit: www.hall-woodhouse.co.uk. Have a great day! Anthony Woodhouse

1. FORM

EXPERT VIEW

A quick way to see a horse’s past performance. These are its recent finishing positions.

How the experts rate the horse’s chances:

Look out for Letters: C D CD BF

= Has won at this course = Has won over this distance = Has won over this distance at this course = Was a beaten favourite

MORE INFORMATION ON THE FORM / P F U R CO B S r

= New racing season = Missed racing season = Was pulled-up and didn’t finish the race = Horse fell = Rider unseated = Horse refused to race = The horse was forced out of a race by a loose horse = Horse was brought down = Horse slipped = The horse ran around a jump or took the wrong course in a flat race = Disqualified

d Bold form figures = performance in all-weather (Flat) or Point-to-Point (Jump) races

2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse. 3. Timeform view and TFR rating 4. HORSE’S TRAINER & THEIR LOCATION

Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race. 5. JOCKEYS Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day. OTHER USEFUL DETAILS 6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey 7. Saddlecloth number 8. Horse’s name 9. Days since the horse last run 10. Horse’s age 11. Jockey’s weight (stone and lbs) 12. The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam) 13. Horse’s owner 14. Horse’s breeder 15. Birthplace of horse (outside GB)

BETTING EXPLAINED Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

THE BADGER BEER HANDICAP CHASE The first Badger Beer Handicap Chase was run in 1962 and was awarded Listed status in 2003. It has since become a Premier Handicap. The feature fixture is an early season highlight at Wincanton Racecourse and typically attracts some of the country’s best. It is run over three miles and about one furlong and is open to four-yearold’s and upwards. This race has proved fruitful for Paul Nicholls, who currently holds the record for most wins, with the trainer being successful on 11 occasions, including last year’s winner Frodon. Nicholls gained his first win back in 1999 when Flaked Oats won the first of back-toback victories. Frost and Nicholls have teamed up to win this race on three occasions, twice with Present Man in 2017 and 2018 and of course, last year. The pair join forces once again as Frodon aims to make it back-to-back victories after last year’s triumph. The higher rated horses tend to be successful in this race, with 11 of the past 12 winners being rated 134 or higher and course knowledge has also been key with 10 of the previous 12 winners having at least one previous run at Wincanton, whilst six out of 12 winners having at least one previous win at this course. This race has a prize fund of £70,000 and Frost is the joint second most successful jockey in the race’s history with only Timmy Murphy (five wins) being more successful.

Stablemate Threeunderthrufive was a good fourth in the Scottish PLAY SMARTER Grand National when last seen and can provide the chief threat ahead of Blackjack Magic, who is capable of better again but needs to prove his jumping can cope with the demands of a good race.

FIFTH RACE

Richard J Barber 1941 – 2019

From his stables in Seaborough in Dorset Richard Barber saddled well over 1,000 Point to Point winners. He saddled his first winner, Gerry Doyle, at Nedge point to point in 1986, and his final one, Whataknight, at Bratton Down in 2014. It is no exaggeration to say that during his time Richard Barber raised the bar and transformed the sport of point to pointing in the West Country. Richard was a true country gentleman, a wise man, a caring man who regularly stood up for the underdog, a man who had time for everyone and a man who had few words but those that he imparted were well worth listening to. He made an indelible contribution to the sport of horse racing.

IMPORTANT

NOTICES

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Wincanton Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

CROSSING THE COURSE The centre of the course viewing is available to all Premier enclosure ticket holders. Please note you must stay within the designated area and access will not be allowed from the time horses are on the course until all horses have left the course. The only exception to this will be for owners and trainers with runners on the day and racecourse officials.
