The interest and enthusiasm generated by racing’s greatest fairytale led to the foundation of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983. Since then the Trust has raised in excess of £15 million.

In 2000 in conjunction with the Institute of Cancer Research, the Trust opened the Bob Champion Cancer Research Laboratories in Surrey, creating the first male dedicated research centre in Europe. The Trust’s second facility, the Bob Champion Research and Educational Building, was opened in February 2015 within the campus of the University of East Anglia. It is within these facilities that their current research projects take place on prostate cancer.

In the UK it has been estimated that one in every 9 men will develop prostate cancer. The incidence of this disease is also increasing and, within the next decade, is set to overtake colon cancer and even lung cancer to become the most common cancer in men. Prostate cancer, therefore, represents a major national health problem.

ALDANITI 4... my Dad’s lucky number. At 4pm on the 4th day of the 4th month, in the 4th race carrying the saddle cloth number 4 ALDANITI and Bob Champion won the Grand National. The year was 1981, and to this day is one of the biggest fairytales in horse racing.

ALDANITI had injured his tendon early on in his career, then fractured his hock when placed 3rd in the Hennessey Gold Cup. Later on after coming 3rd in the Cheltenham Gold cup and 2nd in the Scottish National, he broke down so badly at Sandown the vet said he should be put to sleep.

Mum and Dad had other ideas and said It was “absolutely out of the question” and Niti came home to Barkfold to begin his rehab.

Meanwhile, Bob was overcoming his greatest battle, to win his fight over testicular cancer. Both horse and jockey were on a long journey to win the world’s greatest horse race, a dream that Bob had had since the very first time he rode Niti in a race.

In the February of 1981 both horse and jockey made a winning return to the racecourse at Ascot in the Whitbread Trial beating Anaglogues Daughter.

Then, finally the day came, both the battle hardened warriors stepped onto the famous turf at Aintree and galloped and jumped and jumped and galloped all the way up the long run in to win a victory that resulted in the birth of The Bob Champion Cancer Trust.

This has raised over £16 million and has made leaps and bounds into research, for testing, treating and returning men back to full health.

So this 4th day of the 4th month I am remembering and looking to the future for everyone with great determination and love.

Tony Young was born in Sherborne and grew up at Pinford Farm, Milborne Port. His heritage of farming and horses gave him a love of the land. He hunted with the Blackmore Vale as a child but moved to mechanical horse power in his youth and later life. He initially farmed in Taunton but later moved into aviation to pursue his passion.

In the 1970/80’s the horsey world continued with his daughter’s ponies and attending many Point to Points taking action photographs for the owners.

For majority of his life he lived and was based at Henstridge Airfield. He would fly his helicopter to many racecourses around the country, taking jockeys to various meetings to pursue their title of Champion Jockey.

In retirement he joined the Buckhorn Racing Syndicate and had many years following the four horses, Buckhorn Tom, Tim, George & Rocco. He enjoyed the companionship of the syndicate with fellow owners and the Open Days at Milborne Port with the Tizzard Racing Team.

Tony would have celebrated his 90th Birthday this week and it felt fitting to remember him with a hurdle race, in which all the Buckhorn horses enjoyed success.

We thank Bob Champion Cancer Trust for letting us join them today and hope everyone has an enjoyable and successful day.

ABANDONED RACING In the event of abandonment before the conclusion of the first race, racegoers will receive a full refund. If racing is abandoned between the first and third races, 50% will be refunded. Thereafter no refunds will be made. Applications must be made in writing to the Racecourse Office within 14 days of the race meeting and must be accompanied by the paper admission ticket. No refunds will be available on the day of racing. If racing is abandoned prior to the raceday, or before gates open, all pre-booked tickets that have been paid for in advance will automatically be refunded in full.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION Whilst we always endeavour to take appropriate steps to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is, therefore, important that you are aware

of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. We employ Safety Officials whose job it is to ensure your safety. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the Stands, announcements will be broadcast and the Officials will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the enclosure quickly and quietly under their guidance.

The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. It may give you peace of mind if you pre-plan and agree a meeting place with your party, just in case you become separated. If we are unable to reoccupy the Stands for any reason, you will be advised immediately, and, if it is considered safe to do so, you will be invited to return to your car or coach. These are precautionary arrangements which we trust will not be required. RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Wincanton Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

CROSSING THE COURSE The centre of the course viewing is available to all Premier enclosure ticket holders. Please note you must stay within the designated area and access will not be allowed from the time horses are on the course until all horses have left the course. The only exception to this will be for owners and trainers with runners on the day and racecourse officials.
