FAMILY FUN DAY
SUNDAY 16 APRIL AT WINCANTON RACECOURSE
OFFICIAL RACECARD £3.00
It is very good to welcome you all here today to see the fifth running of the McCreery Military Amateur Riders’ Hurdle and a very big thank you to Wincanton and to Jockey Club Racecourses for so generously having us.
Racing is a long established and important part of military life. At one time, military races were a common feature on cards across the British Isles, and especially where British forces were serving overseas Post the Second World War, with the services extensively committed, and with costs rising, we witnessed a gradual reduction in opportunities for servicemen and women to ride Under Rules. Sandown Park generously continue to host The Royal Artillery meeting in February and The Grand Military meeting in March. These are both tremendous meetings, which I very much hope you will attend if you do not already do so, but we felt that, given the amount of effort that military riders put in to preparing, and the generosity of owners and trainers in finding horses, we needed to offer a bit more We also felt that it would be good to have something in the West Country, where so many of our Royal Naval, Army and Royal Air Force units are stationed, and where there is such a strong sporting tradition. Wincanton was a natural choice and we are much indebted to James Boughey and his Board for all their support. With the Armed Forces as busy as ever it still takes real commitment and determination for our jockeys to get themselves racing fit and to find time to ride out and school, something that is becoming even more demanding given the current international situation. That means that it is a real pleasure to see our military riders here today and we can promise you a tough and exciting race
The race is named after one of the great military jockeys, and great soldiers, General Sir Dick McCreery, a stalwart supporter of both Wincanton and The Blackmore Vale and whose family have long had such strong connections here. It is a particular pleasure to welcome Jeanette McCreery here today to present his trophy. We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to John and Doone Chatfeild-Roberts and their family for so very generously sponsoring us
Is military racing still relevant today when horses are no longer part of the Army’s order of battle? It most certainly is Any sport that encourages fitness, rigid training, determination, a cool head and nerves of steel is as valuable to service men and women today as it’s ever been. I very much hope you enjoy sharing some of that experience with us today.

The McCreery Military Amateur Jockeys Handicap Hurdle
Today, at Wincanton Racecourse, we see the 5th running of the McCreery Military Amateur Jockeys Handicap Hurdle again so generously sponsored by John and Doone Chatfeild-Roberts.
The race is the fourth and final race in a series open to jockeys who are past or present members of the armed services, with today’s riders mostly currently serving. They have all ridden earlier this year at Sandown Park in the Royal Artillery Gold Cup and Grand Military Gold Cup. The McCreery family is synonymous with Wincanton Racecourse with the very first race at Wincanton being won in 1893 by MacDuff, ridden by Lawrence McCreery and owned by Richard McCreery. Richard was uncle to General Sir Richard McCreery GCB KBE DSO MC, a 12th Lancer who fought in both world wars and commanded the Eighth Army in 1944-45. General ‘Dick’ is also a predecessor of today’s jockeys, having won the Grand Military Gold Cup in 1923 and 1928. His son, Bob McCreery, was a fearless
champion amateur rider and winner of 131 races, most notably the 1953 Welsh Grand National on Stalbridge Rock owned and trained by Harry Dufosee Harry was grandfather to the late John Dufosee, another family whose name is so well known at Wincanton. We are delighted that Bob’s wife, Jeanette McCreery, will be here to present the prizes this afternoon.
Race sponsor, John Chatfeild-Roberts, held a short service commission in the 16th/5th Lancers and his love of racing has been enhanced by following his son, successful amateur jockey Tom. It is through John’s friendship with past Wincanton Chairman, Jo Hepburn, and General Sir Barney White-Spunner, Chairman of the Grand Military Race Committee, both once loyal followers of the Blackmore & Sparkford Vale, that the McCreery Military Hurdle was born in 2016, following the running of the Royal Artillery Gold Cup at Wincanton in 2014 after the meeting was abandoned at Sandown Park.
Today’s jockeys include Major Charlie O’Shea, a popular West Country amateur jockey and a Gunner Commando, who has bounced back from life threatening injuries received here at Wincanton in a fall at this meeting a year ago. Also Sergeant Nathan Rahman of the Royal Welsh, an experienced amateur jockey and previous winner of the valuable and highly competitive Gentlemen’s Cross Country Final at Merano at the end of September 2020 Nathan is also a qualified jockey coach.

A weak maiden so bumper-winner ODIN’S QUEST is worth another chance to confirm hurdles debut promise with his yard in red-hot form. Definite took a step back in the right direction on the Flat 6 weeks ago and can go close if taking to this sphere at the first attempt, so is feared most ahead of Jack Sprat, who stepped up on his hurdles bow when third at Huntingdon.

OUR NEXT RACE IS THE DOT TOLSON MEMORIAL HANDICAP CHASE.
Our next race is the Dot Tolson Memorial Handicap Chase With all the Covid restrictions now relaxed this will be the third time we get to celebrate Dot’s life here at Wincanton Racecourse after she was suddenly taken from us just over 4 years ago
Dot was an avid racegoer and enjoyed many happy times here at Wincanton Racecourse. Last time we were here we had a really exciting finish to our race and we are hoping for the same again today.
She would have been very happy to see the father and daughter combination of Jimmy and Bryony Frost win with Kristjano in 2019 and Kauto the King trained by Colin Tizzard and ridden by Harry Cobden in 2021 Dot’s favourite trainers were Venetia Williams, Paul Nichols and Charlie Mann and her favourite jockey was Sam Twiston-Davies.It would be nice if either one or a combination of those was to win today’s race
There is already a commemorative bench in Dot‘s name and her ashes are scattered at the last fence so we know she’s here in spirit today cheering the winners home. All of the family and friends would like to thank Mark Burridge of Derek Burridge Ltd for the trophies, The Jockey Club and especially Hannah and everyone here at Wincanton Racecourse for all that they have done to make today so very special.
Lastly we are trying to raise some money for Dot’s charity which is The Injured Jockeys Fund so if you would like to make a donation please use this link on a computer or scan the QR code with your smartphone to contribute.
Check out my JustGiving page for the Injured Jockeys Fund and help me raise more money for Dot’s charity

IMPORTANT NOTICES
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Wincanton Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
Crossing the Course
The centre of the course viewing is available to all Premier enclosure ticket holders. Please note you must stay within the designated area and access will not be allowed from the time horses are on the course until all horses have left the course The only exception to this will be for owners and trainers with runners on the day and racecourse officials
Photography
Racegoers may take photographs for private use within the areas normally open to the public. Flash photography is not permitted.
Prize Money
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £327,629 in rate card and incremental prize money at this racecourse from January to April 2023
