CAP DU MATHAN has won both of his starts this year, taking advantage of an off day from the favourite but again jumping well when scoring at Exeter last time, and he can continue his progress to complete the hat-trick. The Widdow Maker could be the biggest threat back up in trip, with Any News completing the shortlist.

Cases can be made for a few of these but HARDY BOY fared much better than previously this season sporting first-time cheekpieces when going down by just a short head at Kempton last month, so provided the headgear is as equally as effective on this occasion, he’s fancied to go a place better Astigar has been given a chance by the assessor, so he’s feared most, ahead of handicap debutant Sandalwood.

DICK AND SUE WOODHOUSE

Both Dick and Sue Woodhouse were born and lived their whole lives in Dorset. Dick went intofarming and Sue wasa farmer’s daughter.Dick marrying an already talented leading lady Point-to-Point Rider put in placeaformidable team.

Their lives centred on hunting and racing horses, being owners, riders, trainers, lorry drivers, grooms and breeders as well as Stewarding at manyPoint-to-Points and also hereatWincanton. Having said that, the usual result wasDick doing mostofthe riding and Sue all the training!

They had manysuccessful horses but twostand out. Woodside Terrace, purchased at Ascot Sales for360gns, went on to win the Cheltenham Foxhunters in 1965, as a 100/1 outsider and Dick’sfirstride under rules. Then Highworth arrived, to be a multiple Point-to-Point winner and successful regularly in Hunter Chases hereat Wincanton. He also wastowin the Cheltenham Foxhunters, in 1970, and went on the next year to run in the Grand National –fulfilling Dick’sgreatestambition.

Sadly Dick died in 1983 in his early fifties from cancer but Sue carried on regularly Stewarding both hereand at Taunton. She continued to breed aline of highly successful Point-to-Pointers, the mostwell-known and prolific being Hops And Pops, who provided Robert Alner with some of his early successes as atrainer.Sue retired in 2003and wasduly presented with the Wessex Area Point-to-Point Awardfor lifetime achievement.

Sue sadly passed away in 2008 but this Hunter Chase continues to be run annually in Dick and Sue's memory

IMPORTANT NOTICES

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Wincanton Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital

Crossing the Course

The centre of the course viewing is available to all Premier enclosure ticket holders. Please note you must stay within the designated area and access will not be allowed from the time horses are on the course until all horses have left the course. The only exception to this will be for owners and trainers with runners on the day and racecourse officials

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private use within the areas normally open to the public. Flash photography is not permitted.

Prize Money

The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £772,031 at this racecourse in 2022

In-Running Betting

Please note that in-running betting is not allowed in any public areas of Wincanton Racecourse. As expressly permitted by the Wincanton Racecourse Special Conditions, attendees may not use mobile telephones, laptop computers or any other communications device whilst on the Racecourse to communicate with anyone outside the Racecourse for the purpose of or in connection with any betting. Any racegoer found to be in breach of this rule will be removed from the Racecourse
