THE TIMEFORM VIEW WILSTAR and Kadastral are both exciting recruits to hurdling judged on their bumper exploits. The latter built on his debut promise to land a valuable prize at Newbury in March, but narrow preference is for the former, who impressed with his last-to-first move in a well-run affair at Perth and has clearly inherited plenty of his illustrious family’s ability Cave Bridge overcame inexperience to make a winning hurdling debut at Carlisle recently and is open to improvement.

Stewards Note: CHOOSE A COPPER: Following its run on 25/3/2025 it was reported that the horse made several jumping errors.
THE TIMEFORM VIEW With several confirmed front-runners present, there won’t be much hanging about here. STRONG FOUNDATIONS is one who will benefit from a proper test at this trip judged on what he showed over hurdles last season and while his jumping will need to be on-point at the first time of asking over fences, he was runner-up on his sole start in points and looks every inch a chasing type. Pep Talking is just about feared most ahead of the promising Lightning Flash, while Choose A Copper also has claims.

THE TIMEFORM VIEW The one who appeals most is PROTEKTORAT, who was unsuccessful when bidding to defend his Ryanair Chase crown during the spring, but he followed that with a solid effort in defeat at Aintree and the 10-y-o is likely to benefit from this step back up in trip. Hewick warmed up for this assignment with a hurdles success at Thurles and he is next on the list ahead of Pic d’Orhy, who will be a danger to all if his stamina passes the test. Last year’s winner The Real Whacker also merits respect.

W. A. ‘Charlie’ Hall 1903-1977
Today’s meeting and its feature race are named after former local trainer William ‘Charlie’ Hall. Born in 1903, he was the second of three brothers who were all to become succesful racehorse trainers; Tom & Sam were the brothers.
Based at Towton, near Tadcaster, Hall’s training career began in the Autumn of 1945, with his first winner being Culworth at Wetherby in November of that year.
Magnetic Fin gave Hall his first important victory when winning the 1948 Scottish Grand National at Bogside. He established a succesful partnership with owner and breeder, Clifford Nicholson, and rose steadily to the top of his profession, finishing as Champion Trainer in 1955/56. His most notable success came in the 1956 Champion Hurdle with Mr Nicholson’s DoorKnocker
In all, Charlie Hall trained 584 winners under National Hunt rules during a 31-year career, including a remarkable 169 winners at his local track Wetherby. He also trained 100 winners on the flat.
Charlie Hall retired in 1975, handing his license to his stepson assistant Maurice Camacho, who in turn handed over to his daughter Julie Camacho. Charlie Hall passed away two years after his retirement, at the age of 75.

HORSE WELFARE
by urse d
at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race, three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
In the interest of safety and for the comfort of others, please note that glasses and bottles are not permitted outside in any part of the Racecourse except in signed and designated areas. PACE YOURSELF
