TIMEFORM VIEW Took his form up a notch sent handicapping over hurdles, recording back-to-back wins here (both at 24.1f) at the turn of the year Ran creditably in his hat-trick bid when sixth of 15 at Hexham (23.3f, good to soft) in March and appeals as the type to make a chaser TFRHHHHI BHA96

TIMEFORM VIEW Runner-up 3 times on the bounce prior to shedding his maiden tag at Sedgefield (26.9f, heavy) in February last year Third at this C&D on last season’s return, but well held next time and has been absent for 9 months since. Others preferred from out of the weights. TFRHHIII BHA79

Stewards Note: MONAGHAN BOY: Following its run on 26/1/2025 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.

PROBABLE S.P.’s 10-3 Jupiter des Bordes (FR), 4-1 Great Notions (FR), 5-1 The Big Breac (IRE), 13-2 Saint Arvans (FR), 8-1 Court At Slip (IRE), 9-1 Monochromix (FR), 14-1 Monaghan Boy (IRE), 22-1 Community Rebel (IRE)

THE TIMEFORM VIEW GREAT NOTIONS has made a positive start under Rules, winning a hunter chase at Hexham before running at least as well when third at Cartmel, so the 6-y-o could still have more to offer as he goes handicapping. He can see off the challenge of Jupiter des Bordes, who promises to be suited by this step up in trip, while The Big Breac is also considered on chase debut.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed,

THE TIMEFORM VIEW GET ON GEORGE is likely to need even longer trips before long but he built on a promising run in bumpers when fourth on his Carlisle hurdling debut recently and, with plenty of rain forecast, conditions should place enough of an emphasis on stamina for him to shine. Smart Decision did well in junior events and will be a big threat if seeing out the longer trip, with Warriors Destiny narrowly preferred to Sheezer Diva and Uptown Dancy for minor honours. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.GET ON GEORGE (IRE)

THE TIMEFORM VIEW HOSAAMM has refused to race in his short career over hurdles, but he showed no sign of temperament switched to a handicap when runner-up at Ayr a fortnight ago and, with his best days surely still ahead of him in this sphere, he’s fancied to go one better from a 2lb higher mark. 1931 2023 - 1931 - 2023

We have been privileged to share many special moments with Colin and his family here at Wetherby Racecourse none more memorable than the celebration of his 90th birthday on this very raceday in November 2021.

This photo captures Colin on his final visit to Wetherby in November 2022. He had a genuine love for the races and for the joy of being surrounded by his family. His enthusiasm was infectious, and his warmth touched everyone who knew him.

Today, as his family gather to remember him, we honour Colin’s life with a race dedicated to his memory. As the horses thunder past, we raise a glass to a true gentleman one whose spirit will always be part of Wetherby.

Have you come dressed in your Peak Cap or Pearls today?

Thank you if you have embraced the Peak Cap & Pearls theme today

Please pop across to the Paddock Bar to have your photo taken, you will receive a souvenir copy to takeaway and share with your friends. We will also be awarding prizes for the best outfits, to those who are snapped!

1920s Peak Cap & Pearls

Boom & Bust

The Roaring Twenties was a decade of contrasts, the First World War had ended in victory and the 1920s started with peace and prosperity.

For some, the war had proved very profitable. Manufacturers and suppliers of goods needed for the war effort had prospered and become very rich. The ‘Bright Young Things’ from the aristocracy and wealthier classes, had never had it so good, as theatres, nightclubs, cocktail bars and jazz clubs flourished. The Charleston was the dance of the day, and Noel Coward was the playwright who kept everyone entertained

Horseracing had always been popular but in the 1920s was being propelled to new levels with bumper crowds. The UK Government created the Racecourses betting act, which allowed on-course bets to be taken.

Horses were becoming less regarded as a means of transport and thus became more of a lifestyle choice, with horses and ponies being used primarily for leisure and sport. This was the decade the ‘Pony Club’ was formed, an organisation which still exists today and which many of our Jockeys were members of in their childhood.

TDuring the War, many women had been employed in the factories and fields, undertaking jobs which previously were for men only, this gave them a wage and a new degree of independence Women over 30 had been given the vote in 1918, and by 1928 this had been extended to all women over the age of 21.

Women felt confident and empowered and this was reflected in their fashions, with boyish figures, shorter hair and hemlines, and women began to smoke, drink and drive motorcars. The attractive, independent ‘flapper’ appeared on the scene, shocking society. Girl Power 1920's style had arrived!

By the mid-1920s, the post-war period of prosperity was well and truly over and Britain entered a period of depression, deflation and decline. Unemployment rose to over 2 million reaching levels of 70% out of work in some places in the North and Wales. This led in turn to the Great Strike of 1926, and following the US Wall Street Crash of 1929, the beginning of the Great Depression of the 1930s.

an ur ed reat of 20s

For a decade that started with such a ‘Boom’, the 1920s ended in an almighty ‘Bust’!

The Racecard pictured above is one we hold in our archives. We have it available today for anyone that would like to see it, along with many others of the era. Please come to the Racecourse Office and we would be delighted to let you take a proper look.

Below are images taken from ‘The Bystander’ dated November 12th, 1924. The Headline was ‘Braving the Weather at Wetherby’ Chases’. Some things never change!

During the race, three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
