Paul ‘Fatty’ Renshaw
Everyone at Wetherby was saddened to hear about the sudden and unexpected death of Paul Renshaw last week. Fatty had been an integral part of Steve Charlton’s northern jockeys’ valet operation since 1987 and will rarely have missed a jumps fixture at Wetherby, if any, since the day he started. He was working as usual at our last fixture on 16th November.
He was such an immense character and the Weighing Room was a richer place for him being inside. He will be sorely missed.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thoughts and condolences to Paul’s wife and his family, his friends, his colleagues and the Jockeys that he worked with every day in the weighing room.

BEST TURNED OUT
Racing grooms work very hard looking after the horses in their care to ensure they come to the races looking immaculate. As a reward for their efforts, a cash prize is presented to the groom who is judged to have produced the 'Best Turned Out' horse in every race.
Condition & Coat - Racehorses are athletes and the way their coat looks and the way it moves easily over their muscles reflects the horses overall condition. The coat should look smooth, clean and have a glossy shine, but pay attention to Greys and lighter coloured Chestnuts, as they won't carry such a sheen to their coats, which is not for want of trying, they just have the equine equivalent of mousey hair and remember that Greys often require much more work and effort to get clean. Quarter marks are the patterns put onto the coat on the horse's hindquarters or shoulder. They are made using a damp brush, wiped against the natural lie of the coat. Much like brushing velvet the wrong way.
To Plait or not to Plait - to win Best Turned Out a horse does not have to be plaited. Some horses do not like having their heads touched and get over-excited when being plaited as it indicates they could be off to the races. If a horse is not plaited it should not go against them, providing their loose mane is short, tangle-free and even, and lying on the right hand side of the horse's neck. Plaits should be small, neat and uniform with an odd number of plaits along the neck and one at the front.
Tails you win! - Doubtless at some point you will have heard that you should not stand behind a horse! For racing grooms the trust they build with their horses means you may see some in the Parade Ring with a plaited tail. If tails are loose they must be tangle-free, not too long, and there should be no wisps of bedding or hay in the tail.
No foot no Horse - Horse's legs, particularly white markings, known as socks or stockings, must be clean. Sometimes chalk is used to brighten these marks. Feet should be well shod and hooves oiled.
Best Dressed - All items of clothing (tack) the horse wears should be in good condition and clean.

New Beginnings was established in Yorkshire in 2010 and provides a safe and secure environment for former racehorses, where they can adjust and be re-trained for their second career following racing.
They take in horses straight from racing or more often from private post-racing homes where for whatever reason the owners can no longer look after them Horses are then carefully re-trained and re-homed on long-term permanent loan contracts.
Mister McGoldrick was one of New Beginnings’ first ambassador horses and spent many years standing at Racecourses, and local horse shows to hghlight the great work this charity do. He was with them for 12 years until he passed away in July 2024.

THE TIMEFORM VIEW CHEMICAL WARFARE is proving to be a real money spinner for this yard and a further 7lb rise doesn’t look insurmountable given his straightforward win at Newcastle last month. Asa caught the eye on her chase bow at Kelso and is next best ahead of the low-mileage Whosmydaddy

To racing enthusiasts, particularly those who frequent Wetherby, Mister McGoldrick was a racing icon - a storied steeplechaser who was the epitome of Yorkshire grit and determination! To heart patients, Mr McGoldrick was the Leeds-based surgeon whose brilliance is the reason they are still alive.
HORSE WELFARE
erby ourse e ed
at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race, three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
Mister McGoldrick ‘Mac’
The two were forever linked by Richard Longley, a Yorkshireman who chose to buy a racehorse following major cardiac surgery and name it after the Doctor who gave him a new lease of life. This in itself is a wonderful tale, but if you throw in the fact that the horse was bred by and purchased from a Butcher in Knaresborough, was trained by Sue Smith, the wife of retired show-jumper Harvey Smith in Bingley, and he went on to win some of steeplechasing’s premier races, after coming back from serious injury, you have a unique rags to riches story.
Mister McGoldrick and Dominic Elsworth, clearing Wetherby’s last fence in style, to win the 2004/05 Castleford Chase
Mister McGoldrick achieved moderate success on the flat before being sent to Sue for training over fences. No one had any clue that he would go on to win a record eight races at Wetherby, finish a gallant third in the prestigious Queen Mother Champion Chase or as a 66/1 outsider, win the Racing Post Plate at the 2008 Cheltenham Festival, by 13 lengths after quite simply galloping the rest of the field into the ground!
Mister McGoldrick’s career spanned 11 years, during which he won £372,000. His last race was at Wetherby in November 2011 and such was his popularity that he returned to Wetherby on Boxing Day that same year, to mark his official retirement, where he cantered past packed grandstands to great applause and a standing ovation.
In the years after racing, Mister McGoldrick became an equine ambassador for New Beginnings, who retrain and rehome exracehorses, giving them a new life past the post.
Mister McGoldrick passed away peacefully in the care of New Beginnings in July 2024 at the grand old age of 27.
His story is the finest example of what National Hunt Racing stands for and Wetherby are proud to be able to honour him today and keep his story alive for future racing generations.
McGoldrick’s Bar is located on the ground floor of the Millennium West Grandstand. The bar carries his name and his colours and is open today, so please go and raise a glass to him. RIP Mac.
