THE TIMEFORM VIEW SERIOUS CHAT probably won’t be at his best until tackling staying trips, but this looks an excellent opportunity for him to get off the mark at the second time of asking over hurdles. Klapton Boy was runner-up on his sole outing in Irish points and needs a market check setting out under Rules at an ordinary level. TIMEFORM PREDICTION:

FIRST AID

BEST TURNED OUT

Racing grooms work very hard looking after the horses in their care to ensure they come to the races looking immaculate. As a reward for their efforts, a cash prize is presented to the groom who is judged to have produced the 'Best Turned Out' horse in every race.

Condition & Coat - Racehorses are athletes and the way their coat looks and the way it moves easily over their muscles reflects the horses overall condition. The coat should look smooth, clean and have a glossy shine, but pay attention to Greys and lighter coloured Chestnuts, as they won't carry such a sheen to their coats, which is not for want of trying, they just have the equine equivalent of mousey hair and remember that Greys often require much more work and effort to get clean. Quarter marks are the patterns put onto the coat on the horse's hindquarters or shoulder. They are made using a damp brush, wiped against the natural lie of the coat. Much like brushing velvet the wrong way.

To Plait or not to Plait - to win Best Turned Out a horse does not have to be plaited. Some horses do not like having their heads touched and get over-excited when being plaited as it indicates they could be off to the races. If a horse is not plaited it should not go against them, providing their loose mane is short, tangle-free and even, and lying on the right hand side of the horse's neck. Plaits should be small, neat and uniform with an odd number of plaits along the neck and one at the front.

Tails you win! - Doubtless at some point you will have heard that you should not stand behind a horse! For racing grooms the trust they build with their horses means you may see some in the Parade Ring with a plaited tail. If tails are loose they must be tangle-free, not too long, and there should be no wisps of bedding or hay in the tail.

No foot no Horse - Horse's legs, particularly white markings, known as socks or stockings, must be clean. Sometimes chalk is used to brighten these marks. Feet should be well shod and hooves oiled.

Best Dressed - All items of clothing (tack) the horse wears should be in good condition and clean.

1931 - 2023 - 1931 - 2023

‘The Chairman’

We are honoured to have celebrated many milestones with Colin and his family at Wetherby Racecourse, including his 90th Birthday on this very raceday in November 2021.

Colin is pictured here, on his last visit to Wetherby in November 2022. He truly loved coming racing and being surrounded by his family. His delight was infectious and we all remember him fondly.

Today his family and friends honour and remember Colin with a race in his memory, and we shall all raise a glass to a true gentleman as the horses gallop by.

1920s Peak Cap & Pearls Boom & Bust

The Roaring Twenties was a decade of contrasts The First World War had ended in victory, and the 1920s started with peace and prosperity

For some, the war had proved very profitable. Manufacturers and suppliers of goods needed for the war effort had prospered and become very rich. The ‘Bright Young Things’ from the aristocracy and wealthier classes, had never had it so good, as Nightclubs, Cocktail Bars and Jazz Clubs flourished.

Racing had always been popular but in the 1920s was being propelled to new levels with bumper crowds. The UK Government created the Racecourses betting act, which allowed on-course bets to be taken.

Horses were becoming less regarded as a means of transport and thus became more of a lifestyle choice, with horses and ponies being used primarily for leisure and sport. This was the decade the ‘Pony Club’ was formed, an organisation which still exists today and which many of our Jockeys were members of in their childhood.

During the War, many women had been employed in the factories and fields, undertaking jobs which previously were for men only, this gave them a wage and a new degree of independence. Women over 30 had been given the vote in 1918, and by 1928 this had been extended to all women over the age of 21.

Women felt confident and empowered and this was reflected in their fashions, with boyish figures, shorter hair and hemlines, and women began to smoke, drink and drive motorcars. The attractive, independent ‘flapper’ appeared on the scene, shocking society Girl Power 1920’s style had arrived!

By the mid-1920s, the post-war period of prosperity was well and truly over and Britain entered a period of depression, deflation and decline. Unemployment rose to over 2 million reaching levels of 70% out of work in some places in the North and Wales. This led in turn to the Great Strike of 1926, and following the US Wall Street Crash of 1929, the beginning of the Great Depression of the 1930s.

For a decade that started with such a ‘Boom’, the 1920s ended in an almighty ‘Bust’!

TIMEFORM VIEW Both wins over 2m at Kelso, latterly in a 15-runner handicap 3 weeks ago. An 8lb rise doesn’t look severe (quickened clear nicely) but he does need to prove that he can string good runs together TFRHHHHH BHA113

Tongue Strap worn by No. 1, 2, 6. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 2, 4.

Running for the first time since Wind Surgery No. 2.

PROBABLE S.P.’s 13-8 Old Gregorian (GB), 11-4 Oslo (GB), 6-1 Glory And Fortune (IRE), 8-1 Coup de Coeur (FR), 10-1 Rewired (GB), 18-1 N’Golo (IRE)

THE TIMEFORM VIEW OLD GREGORIAN’s hit-or-miss profile to date is a bit of a concern but his recent Kelso win appeals as solid form so even an 8lb rise may not stop him. Oslo isn’t always fluent in the jumping department but he arrives in form and is the obvious danger

THE TIMEFORM VIEW Preference is for BALLYDISCO, who was in the process of running creditably on return when departing on his debut for new connections at Carlisle just over 3 weeks ago. Provided that spill hasn’t left a mark, he can get the better of Cartonne, who shaped as if better for the run after 6 months off at Huntingdon recently Cardamon Hill can fill out third.
