Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
Form Guide
The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.
The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.
| FACTS | FANCIES | FORM | STATS |
Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front.

FRESH bistro FRESH CAFE FRESH HOT ROLLS FRESH PIES FRESH PANINISMagical King got proceedings off to a winning start for Stuart Edmunds and Fergus Gillard. Backed into 8/15 favourite, Edmunds had opted to put first time cheekpieces on his gelding on his return to novice company, which produced a winning performance The win was by no means a foregone conclusion jumping the last but an untimely fall by Willsburg left Magical King alone in front, which he duly took advantage of to score by 4 3/4 lengths.
Race two went the way of Shaun Harris and Jack Quinlan. Ali Star Bert just prevailed in a close fought battle with Le Grand Vert. In winning, Ali Star Bert made it 5-12 over fences and will no doubt be of interest again wherever he rocks up next. Le Grand Vert may well have claimed the prize but for a few sketchy jumps, an improved jumping performance could see him win next time out.
Wreckless Eric went some way to living up to his name after taking a keen hold under Kielan Woods for the inform Ben Pauling. He didn’t make a great shape at some of his hurdles but is a horse with plenty of ability, keeping on gamely to beat I Wish You for Lucinda Russell and Stephen Mulqueen.
A mere neck separated Eaton Collina and Heros in what was a thriller in the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Handicap Chase. Eaton Collina had been raised 7lb for a wide margin victory over course and distance. It looked to be a fair enough rise and the handicapper got it spot on at Kerry Lee’s nine-year-old just scraped up under Richard Patrick. Heros put up a more than valiant fight in second but was just held by Eaton Collina in a thrilling finish.
Our penultimate contest looked a wide open race on paper and played out as such Eventual winner Uncle Bert got his optimum conditions and showed a much improved performance to bag a third win. Second placed, The Four Sixes was up 4lb since his last run and despite wondering about up the run in, he stays further and should make a lovely chaser in time for connections.
Our finale went the way of Beaumesnil for Susan Corbett and Nathan Moscrop. He didn’t look the most straightforward of types when denied at Catterick but travelled all over his rivals in the retained blinkers to get off the mark. He did idle a bit once hitting the front but despite a saddle slip, he was always doing enough.
RACE ONE
Now that the penny has dropped for BILLY BOI BLUE over hurdles after a taking performance over this distance at Hereford in January, there should be plenty more to come from the son of Blue Bresil. Act Of Authority may have disappointed when a short-priced favourite last time out, but he is better judged on his penultimate success at Bangor while Tommy Time cannot be ruled out either
TOTEWIN: BILLY BOI BLUE
RACE TWO
TOTEEACHWAY: ACT OF AUTHORITY
Turned out again quickly after an easy success at Hexham last week, RAFFLES WONDER looks the one to beat again and can follow up under a 7lb penalty for in-form connections. Success may come at the main expense of Lone Soldier, who showed up well for a long way at Southwell over further before fading late on. Hide Out and V Twelve have the form to get involved as well.
TOTEWIN: RAFFLES WONDER
RACE THREE
TOTEEACHWAY: LONE SOLDIER
A respectable second at Catterick last time out, CARRIGEEN CASTLE will appreciate a return to this track having bolted up over C&D on his penultimate start. Micky Hammond’s charge is now 10lb higher but he should have too much for Heartbreak Kid, who is capable on his day though is winless since last May. A winner here over shorter, Sword Of Fate prefers better ground but is still taken seriously in this company.
TOTEWIN: CARRIGEEN CASTLE
RACE FOUR
TOTEEACHWAY: HEARTBREAK KID
TOP OF THE BILL failed to fire on heavy ground at Exeter last time but the eight-year-old had won his two previous starts and can be given another chance here. Donny Boy was narrowly denied at Newcastle a couple of starts ago and that form gives him a big chance in a race of this nature, while Lord Of Kerak edges out Cerendipity to be best of the rest.
TOTEWIN: TOP OF THE BILL
RACE FIVE
TOTEEACHWAY: DONNY BOY
FAINCHE arrives here on the back of a close second over 3m1f at Carlisle last month and a 3lb rise in the ratings may not be enough to stop her from going one better here. That said, Oliver’s Island has also been knocking on the door of late and is an obvious threat to the selection. Kinder Kid remains unexposed and is another to note on just his second handicap start.
TOTEWIN: FAINCHE
RACE SIX
TOTEEACHWAY: OLIVER’S ISLAND
WORLDWIDE FURY was purchased for 150,000 pounds after winning an Irish point-to-point a year ago and it would be no surprise to see the son of Jukebox Jury make a winning start to life under Rules. Oak Grove was not disgraced at Ascot on his debut for these connections in November and he could prove to be the main threat, ahead of Castle Ivers and Sawdust.

The son of a Cheshire butcher, Colin’s love for horses started at an early age. The young Colin had ponies and was an established junior ShowJumper. Colin started his racing career at Lambourn with a flat trainer, but due to his love of food and the odd beer, it was suggested he tried jump racing instead.
Colin, affectionately known by his friends as 'Jack', is best remembered for his association with the formidable Middleham racing yard of Captain Neville Crump. Colin rode his first winner on Neville Crump's Hopeful Secret, in 1975, at Haydock Park.
Colin would joke, that he would have won the 1983 Cheltenham Gold Cup, had Michael Dickinson's horse box broken down on its way to the course. It has since become a well-known Quiz Question. ' Which was the first horse to pass the post in the 1983 Cheltenham Gold Cup that was not trained by Michael Dickinson? The answer of course, Richdee, ridden by Colin Hawkins. Dickinson having the 'famous five' horses past the post ahead of Colin.
Joking apart, Colin was a leading National Hunt Jockey, and won some impressive races such as the 1979 Scottish Grand National aboard Fighting Fit, and the Massey Ferguson Gold Cup in 1977 on Even Melody - a horse on whom he won a total of 22 races. He also won around Wetherby in the Charlie Hall on Sparkies Choice and was a three-time winner of the Rowland Meyrick Chase, on horses Ballet Lord, Fortina’s Express and Richdee in a career that spanned 21 years and yielded 378 winners. Colin’s last ride was on the 15th April 1995 at Carlisle, the horse fell causing Colin a spinal injury, it was that year he handed back his jockey's license.
Colin continued to live in the training centre of Middleham where he became the local Postman, and he also became a part-time BHA race starter at various race meetings including Wetherby.
Colin passed away suddenly on Christmas Day 2019, whilst walking his dog in the fields. He had recently undergone Chemotherapy for Cancer.
Described by a fellow jockey as 'Tough as Teak!' Sadly Colin's Cancer treatment had taken its toll. Colin was witty, reliable, and a loyal friend.
We remember Colin fondly today and hope you have a winning day!
Best,
Judith Kimberley Ann Addy.THIRD RACE

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 115 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 110.

PLAY SMARTER
This stiffer test promises to suit KINDER KID who shaped well on his handicap debut over 19.7f here recently, despite clearly finding the trip too sharp and not hurdling with any great fluency. Moving up in trip will probably help both in relation to his jumping and in terms of sparking general improvement. Fainche deserves to get her head in front and she is next on the list ahead of Mister Barclay, who will be in with a fighting chance if able to shrug off a below par last-time-out effort.

RACE DESCRIPTION As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.

An interesting bumper to conclude. OAK GROVE wasn’t seen to best effect when fifth in a decent race at Ascot on his debut in November and can step up on that form with a tongue tie added on his return. Southwell winner Castle Ivers should go well despite the penalty, while Sawdust could step up on the form of his Exeter third if settling better this time. Point winners Worldwide Fury and Caughtinyourtrance would also enter the reckoning if the betting suggests they are fancied.
