Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /. CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race. FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

| FACTS | FANCIES | FORM | STATS |

Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

TORNEO

LAST TIME OUT | THURSDAY 25TH JANUARY Torneo got our last meeting off to an emphatic start, winning by 26 lengths for trainer Jamie Snowden and jockey Gavin Sheehan. The son of Toronado was short-priced favourite and he certainly justified the support, cruising to take the opening race of the day. He made all and despite a mistake when four out, he went clear from the penultimate hurdle and was never in any danger from his rivals. Man Of Monaco was the closest in second but he was never in contention. Silver Bridge finished a further 18 lengths behind in third. It was a much closer contest in the following race, with Goguenard securing the honours at 40-1 for trainer D J Jeffreys and jockey Harry Atkins. The eight-year-old was prominent in the early stages before Atkins asked for more from him when three out. He disputed the lead from two out before he kept on well to see off the danger from Heard That in second. There was three-quarters of a length between the pair with Mister Barclay a further half-length behind in third. The third race of the day saw plenty of support for The Edgar Wallace and Our Jet, but it was the Richard Hobson-trained Docpickedme who came out on top. Lee Edwards was on board the eight-year-old and the pair saw off The Edgar Wallace by half-a-length. The son of Getaway was prominent before being nudged along before four out. Edwards then got the answer he was

GOGUENARD

looking for from Docpickedme who took the lead during the run-in and kept on well to deny the Kim Bailey-trained nine-year-old. Dan Skelton left his mark on the meeting with his six-year-old Asta La Pasta taking the honours in the Follow @racingtv On Instagram EBF “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle Race with Harry Skelton on board. Approaching the closing stages, it was a straight battle between Asta La Pasta and Tedtwo but it was the former who found just enough to secure the victory. Fortunate Man finish thirteen lengths behind Tedtwo in third. Lincoln Lyn was market favourite in the penultimate race of the day and she certainly justified the support with a fine three-anda-half length win over Pougne Aminta in second. Trained by Tom Gretton and ridden by Brian Hughes, Lincoln Lyn wasn’t the most fluent at the penultimate fence but had plenty to go clear in the run-in. Oakley Dancer finished third, 18 lengths behind Pougne Aminta. Another excellent day of racing here at Wetherby was then completed with Tune In A Box winning the Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race for trainer Tom Lacey and jockey Stan Sheppard. The five-year-old went off 5-4 favourite and produced a strong round of jumping to win by two-and-three-quarter lengths ahead of Nearly Wed.

THE BUZZ by Wetherbee

RACE ONE

ST JOHN’S ROAD was comprehensively beaten by The Kalooki Kid at Newcastle prior to Christmas, but that winner has since been far from disgraced in the Grade 2 Rossington Main. Lucinda Russell’s mare ought to have learned plenty from that initial jumping experience and she can step forward today. Largy Force appears to be the main danger, although Yorkshire Lady performed to a fair level on the Flat and is worth a second look now switched to hurdles.

TOTEWIN: ST JOHN’S ROAD

TOTEEACHWAY: LARGY FORCE

RACE TWO

Harjo made it second-time lucky over the larger obstacles when romping home at Wincanton in December, and he merits respect with the prospect of more to come. However, a chance can be taken on SOLDIER OF DESTINY. Jamie Snowden’s gelding is well treated judged on past exploits, and recent wind surgery could give him an added boost. Others to note include Kepagge and Not What It Seems.

TOTEWIN: SOLDIER OF DESTINY

TOTEEACHWAY: HARJO

RACE THREE

Walk On Quest was well supported ahead of his hurdling bow at Kelso and should go well if building on that second placing, but TARRAS WOOD shades preference. A bumper winner at this venue, Paul Nicholls’ charge put a Warwick blip behind him when runner-up at Wincanton and it would come as no surprise were he to step forward again. To Chase A Dream heads the remainder.

TOTEWIN: TARRAS WOOD

TOTEEACHWAY: WALK ON QUEST

RACE FOUR

THE FOUR SIXES readily accounted for a subsequent winner on his debut for Olly Murphy over 2m5f at this venue on Boxing Day. A 6lb rise for that success may vastly underestimate the six-year-old and he is hard to oppose as a result. The consistent Magic Wave is an obvious threat, despite being a beaten oddson favourite at Ayr last time, while Bashers Reflection and Brinkley are others who make the shortlist.

TOTEWIN: THE FOUR SIXES

TOTEEACHWAY: MAGIC WAVE

RACE FIVE

CARRIGEEN CASTLE was successful over 2m4f at Newcastle four weeks ago and Micky Hammond’s gelding could be hard to stop once again, despite a 5lb rise in the ratings. King Of The Hill was only narrowly denied on his most recent outing at Catterick and that form gives him a big chance. Robins Field took a step forward following a wind operation to occupy the runner-up berth at Sedgefield and is next best.

TOTEWIN: CARRIGEEN CASTLE

TOTEEACHWAY: KING OF THE HILL

RACE SIX

FAIRLY FAMOUS is one from one over regulation fences and is a highly appealing option. A good second in a point-to-point in December, the seven-year-old is entitled to be sharper for the run and has plenty of scope for improvement. Former smart chaser Windsor Avenue is feared most on his debut in the hunter chase scene/first run for 336 days, while Super Citizen beat just three rivals at Kelso yet still commands attention.

TOTEWIN: FAIRLY FAMOUS

TOTEEACHWAY: WINDSOR AVENUE

RACE SEVEN

Assuming he runs with less fizz than when last seen, MR BRAMLEY could go one place better than the good second he registered in this contest 12 months ago. There is plenty of guesswork involved with the majority of the opposition being newcomers, but Miami Steve appeals on pedigree and commands respect on debut for a top yard. Brother Boris and Para Handy are a couple of others to monitor in the betting.

TOTEWIN: MR BRAMLEY

TOTEEACHWAY: MIAMI STEVE

Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two hurdle races.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

RACE DESCRIPTION The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and three and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

THE WILMOT-SMITH FAMILY

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bread fillies and mares.

THE WILMOT-SMITH MEMORIAL Nick and Pat Wilmot-Smith were the third generation of the family to be associated with Wetherby Racecourse, their grandfather being one of the founding directors of the course on its move to its present site in 1891. Pat was the senior Jockey Club Veterinary Officer (North) before becoming a director of the Racecourse for some years until his death in 1993. Nick became a director of the Racecourse in 1938, on the death of his father, and remained so for 59 years. He was the Chairman from 1968 and was instrumental in starting the major works that are building up Wetherby to be one of the finest jumping courses in the North. He died in May 2001. Both Nick and Pat were well known amateur riders before and after the War and keen and enthusiastic riders to hounds. Nick was at one time the only person to have won a race on his own racecourse, while Pat was in the frame for all six races in a contest with the Guards in Palestine during the War.

We're pleased to introduce our.. Wetherby AMBASSADORS

Wemyss Point

Wemyss Point was a talented racehorse, giving his owners, The Green Oaks Partnership, many fantastic days out with 5 wins, 6 seconds, 4 thirds and 2 fourths during his career. 3 of these wins came at his beloved Wetherby over hurdles in 201718! Weymss is owned by Beth Hutchinson and started re-training last year for his first showing season with great success and we are all very excited to see what they do together in 2024!

Lady Buttons

During her stellar racing career, Buttons garnered a huge following, and collected over £292,000 in prize money for her owner/breeders Jayne and Keith Sivils. Her first Racecourse win was at Wetherby in a Bumper in 2013, and she was a two-time winner of the Mares’ Listed Hurdle at Wetherby in 2018 & 2019. Buttons went to live with Jennie Durrans in February 2023 and we are waiting to find out if Jumping is going to be their thing in 2024!

Guitar Pete

Pete had a hugely successful racing career, earning over £300,000 in prize money, which started in Ireland in 2013 before moving across the water to Nicky Richards in 2016. He was a two-time winner of the bet365 listed hurdle at Wetherby, but his biggest win was in the Grade 3 Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Pete is now owned by Wetherby Director Laurence Kirby, and has taken to the hunting field like a duck to water! He loves jumping and Laurence is hoping to do more with him this summer!

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for novice five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

HORSE WELFARE Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACE DESCRIPTION As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to maiden four, five and six-year-olds only and will be run over two miles.
