Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /. CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race. FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

SAO CARLOS

LAST TIME OUT | SATURDAY 13TH JANUARY Our last meeting here at Wetherby was on Saturday 13th January where the Olly Murphytrained Sao Carlos got proceedings off to an excellent start. The six-year-old disputed the lead in the early stages of the wetherbyracing.co.uk Maiden Hurdle Race before being outpaced after two out. The son of Blue Bresil rallied when approaching the last and was asked for more by jockey Gavin Sheehan. Sao Carlos certainly responded to take the lead inside the final furlong. Spit Spot finished a length-and-a-quarter behind in second for jockey Craig Nichol and trainer Lucinda Russell, with Goldwyn a further two-anda-half lengths behind in third for Jamie Hamilton and Mark Walford. The following race saw four runners contest the William Hill Towton Novices’ Chase. The market favourite Colonel Harry, trained by Jamie Snowden, justified the support by seeing off Trelawne by a length-and-three-quarters. The seven-year-old was going easily four out before being shaken up to lead when three fences from the finish. The gelding kept on well in the run-in to complete a double for Sheehan. The King Of Ryhope and Chasing Fire finished third and fourth respectively. It was an enthralling contest in the third race of the day with Perculator securing the honours by a neck to Stratton Oakmont. Trained by Mark Walford and ridden by Jamie Hamilton, the seven-year-old was prominent in the early stages and despite making an error when two out, still had enough to stay on well to fend off the danger from her rival. Delgany Bobby Blue and

COLONEL HARRY

SANTOS BLUE

Shewearsthewellies finished third and fourth. The fourth race of the day saw an emphatic victory for the well supported Mount Tempest. The seven-year-old trained by Dan Skelton made virtually all to win by eight lengths ahead of The Last Day. That success made it back-to-back victories for the son of Walk In the Park, having won at Sandown a month previously. Cornerstone Lad finished third behind The Last Day. Santos Blue justified the support in the market, winning by two-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Foster’sisland making it a double for trainer Skelton. Ben Sutton was on board the seven-year-old who kept on well in the run-in after Sutton lost both irons before the last. Foster’sisland was in touch with Santos Blue approaching the last but found no extra during the run in. Singapore Trip completed the top three. The penultimate race of the day saw Val Dancer complete a two-length victory for trainer Mel Rowley and jockey Charlie Hammond. The gelding made virtually all and was clear after a good jump at the last. The lead to Shighness in second was reduced during the closing stages but the leader was always doing enough to fend off the danger. Another excellent day of racing here at Wetherby was then completed with Jasmine Bliss securing the honours for Harry Derham and jockey Paul O’Brien in the bumper. The five-year-old travelled strongly and made all. She kept on well to make sure Wednesday Addams was unable to cut the deficit. The pair were well clear of Luna De Castana in third.

THE BUZZ by Wetherbee

RACE: 13:15 TORNEO shaped with promise on his hurdling bow when runner-up at Catterick before finishing third to a leading Triumph Hurdle contender in Sir Gino at Kempton over Christmas. This appears to be a decent opportunity for Jamie Snowden’s gelding to gain a first success over timber. Silverbridge is entitled to build on his Hereford fourth earlier this month and he may pose the biggest threat to the selection, while El Pro is worth another chance after he was pulled up at Fontwell.

TOTEWIN: TORNEO

TOTEEACHWAY: SILVERBRIDGE

RACE: 13:50 MISTER BARCLAY arrives having filled the runner-up spot over C&D on Boxing Day, with Heard That finishing fourth on that occasion, and the former is expected to confirm that form and go one better in the process. The latter is respected as he sports a tongue-tie for the first time on just his second start in handicap company. Blended Stealth drops back in trip and is capable of better with cheekpieces reapplied.

TOTEWIN: MISTER BARCLAY

TOTEEACHWAY: HEARD THAT

RACE: 14:25 THE EDGAR WALLACE has been a revelation since undergoing wind surgery and he seemed to be value for more than the winning margin when scoring at Leicester last month. A 3lb rise for that victory could prove lenient and he should have too much for the returning Marshalled, as well as Our Jet, who has been in fine form this season and wasn’t beaten far over C&D last time out.

TOTEWIN: THE EDGAR WALLACE

TOTEEACHWAY: OUR JET

RACE: 15:00 A costly purchase at the sales, FORTUNATE MAN made quite the impression when scoring on his second start at Newbury last month, and there should be plenty more improvement forthcoming from the fiveyear-old. Similar comments apply to Asta La Pasta, who bounced back to winning ways at Market Rasen, while Tedtwo has switched yards since his own victory at Ffos Las.

TOTEWIN: FORTUNATE MAN

TOTEEACHWAY: ASTA LA PASTA

RACE: 15:35 Although she was disappointing having pulled up on her stable bow at Wincanton in October, JUNIPER could be worth chancing on this return from a 98-day layoff. Anthony Honeyball’s mare had previously posted a close-up second in class 2 company at Cheltenham in April and a reproduction of that performance may suffice. Lincoln Lyn offered much more encouragement when runner-up to a subsequent winner at Fakenham last month. The eight-year-old is feared most ahead of chase debutant Oakley Dancer.

TOTEWIN: JUNIPER

TOTEEACHWAY: LINCOLN LYN

RACE: 16:10 TUNE IN A BOX was quite taking when scooting home on his handicap bow at Newcastle in November, where he put the race to bed in quick fashion. Tom Lacey’s charge does have a 9lb hike in the ratings to contend with here, but the five-year-old looks capable of better. Although Colonel Whizz was a bit underwhelming when a well-beaten third at Southwell last month, an opening mark of 98 looks workable, while Clovis Boy should relish this stiffer test of stamina.

TOTEWIN: TUNE IN A BOX

TOTEEACHWAY: COLONEL WHIZZ

Longest Traveller: MISTER BARCLAY trained by T Symonds, Hentland, 193 miles. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-yearolds and upwards mares only which have been rated from 0 to 115. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

We're pleased to introduce our.. Wetherby AMBASSADORS

Wemyss Point

Wemyss Point was a talented racehorse, giving his owners, The Green Oaks Partnership, many fantastic days out with 5 wins, 6 seconds, 4 thirds and 2 fourths during his career. 3 of these wins came at his beloved Wetherby over hurdles in 201718! Weymss is owned by Beth Hutchinson and started re-training last year for his first showing season with great success and we are all very excited to see what they do together in 2024!

Lady Buttons

During her stellar racing career, Buttons garnered a huge following, and collected over £292,000 in prize money for her owner/breeders Jayne and Keith Sivils. Her first Racecourse win was at Wetherby in a Bumper in 2013, and she was a two-time winner of the Mares’ Listed Hurdle at Wetherby in 2018 & 2019. Buttons went to live with Jennie Durrans in February 2023 and we are waiting to find out if Jumping is going to be their thing in 2024!

Guitar Pete

Pete had a hugely successful racing career, earning over £300,000 in prize money, which started in Ireland in 2013 before moving across the water to Nicky Richards in 2016. He was a two-time winner of the bet365 listed hurdle at Wetherby, but his biggest win was in the Grade 3 Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Pete is now owned by Wetherby Director Laurence Kirby, and has taken to the hunting field like a duck to water! He loves jumping and Laurence is hoping to do more with him this summer!
