Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /. CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race. FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK
| FACTS | FANCIES | FORM | STATS |
Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front.

RACE: 12:35
SAO CARLOS caught the eye when staying on into fourth on his hurdling debut at Lingfield in November and the son of Blue Bresil can take a step forward with that experience under his belt. Jaminoz shaped with promise on his first start over timber at Ayr last month and must feature prominently in calculations with improvement likely, along with stablemate Spit Spot, who finished sixth on that occasion.
TOTEWIN: SAO CARLOS
TOTEEACHWAY: JAMINOZ
RACE: 13:10
Preference is for COLONEL HARRY, who ran on into second over 2m in the Henry VIII at Sandown in December. He is expected to progress now upped in trip and he might take some stopping. Trelawne will need more upped in grade but he remains open to further improvement and should not be underestimated, while Chasing Fire, who unseated at the first last time out, appeals most of the remainder.
TOTEWIN: COLONEL HARRY
TOTEEACHWAY: TRELAWNE
RACE: 13:40
SHEWEARSTHEWELLIES hasn’t looked back since switching to handicaps, winning on three of her last four starts, and she might be the answer once again, despite a further 6lb hike in the ratings. Delgany Bobby Blue looked outpaced over an extended 2m5f at Ascot last month and it’s possible that he could progress now upped in trip, while Sprucefrontiers makes his handicap bow from a workable mark and is another to consider.
TOTEWIN: SHEWEARSTHEWELLIES
TOTEEACHWAY: DELGANY BOBBY BLUE
RACE: 14:15
MOUNT TEMPEST wasn’t fully extended when scoring over this trip at Sandown last month and a 5lb higher mark may not prevent him from following up here. Cornerstone Lad merits consideration as he drops back in trip after filling second over further at this venue in November. Xcitations was far from disgraced when third in a similar race at Newbury when last seen and has to be feared, despite having to carry top weight.
TOTEWIN: MOUNT TEMPEST
TOTEEACHWAY: CORNERSTONE LAD
RACE: 14:50
SANTOS BLUE has posted some respectable efforts in the face of several stiff tests of late and is presented with a good opportunity to have his day in the sun. Foster’sisland has gone well here in the past and is dangerous to underestimate, while Milldam, a winner at Ffos Las in December, also looks a big danger despite a 7lb higher mark. Benassi is another to monitor closely in the betting.
TOTEWIN: SANTOS BLUE
TOTEEACHWAY: FOSTER’SISLAND
RACE: 15:25
TOM CODY successfully recorded a double and showcased his versatility when scoring over an extended 2m3f here last time. The eight-year-old has been put up 8lb for that effort and he now takes a step back up in distance, which shouldn’t pose any problems and he can complete the hat-trick. The main threat is top-weight Lord Of Kerak, who filled the runner-up berth in this grade at Leicester last month and is likely to go well off a 1lb higher rating, while last-time-out victor Val Dancer is another to consider.
TOTEWIN: TOM CODY
TOTEEACHWAY: LORD OF KERAK
RACE: 15:57
JASMINE BLISS was well-held in fourth on her bumper debut at Ludlow in November, but she would have learned plenty from that first outing. The daughter of Blue Bresil now sports a first-time tongue tie and could be one to beat. Rhiannon Ring changed hands for 85,000-euros and the daughter of Milan could have a say, so she should be monitored in the betting. Of the remainder, point-to-point winner Wednesday Addams makes the most appeal on her debut under Rules.
TOTEWIN: JASMINE BLISS
TOTEEACHWAY: RHIANNON RING

FONTAINE COLLONGES
LAST TIME OUT | TUESDAY 26TH DECEMBER With the second day of our annual Christmas meeting being cut short, we were still treated to a phenomenal day of racing on Boxing Day, featuring the Rowland Meyrick. Into Overdrive took them along at a good gallop under Jamie Hamilton for the first portion of the race. There would be no hiding places for any of those in behind and as they began their final circuit the likes of Does He Know and market leader Karl Philippe began to struggle. Fontaine Collonges began to reel in the long time leader in the back straight, with the winner from 12 months ago fading after doing too much in the early stages. Turning for home it became a match race between Venetia Williams charge and the gutsy Empire Steel. The gallant grey came up alongside Fontaine Collonges as they jumped the third last but slowly the younger legs of Fontaine Collonges began to pull away once more. They would go onto score by 14 lengths after an excellent round of jumping and she looks to be at the very top of her game at the moment. Looking at the rest of the action across the card, the opener was landed by Lady In The Park who was given a patient ride by 3lb claimer Patrick Wadge. The mare narrowly edged second favourite before the off and justified the support, while Mick’s Jet proved a below-par favourite.
Tom Cody made no mistakes in our 0-100 Novices’ Chase, however, as his 2lb rise in the weights caused no issue to follow up on his Newcastle victory. He scored with a bit in hand too, with Aristobulus a further 10 lengths behind. 7lb claimer Cameron Iles gave a fabulous ride on the well-fancied Elogio, who recovered well after facing interference four out. The Tom Lacey-trained juvenile proved that the drop back in trip aided his cause as he showed a willing attitude up the straight to score by five and a half lengths. Following the feature race was a 0-130 handicap hurdle which was taken by the former Gordon Elliott-trained The Four Sixes. Back from a break, he found improvement to make a successful start for a new yard, despite early keenness in the hands of Lewis Stones. He eventually stayed on well to score by six lengths form the short-priced favourite Santos Blue. Do Your Job had shown little this season in strong handicaps but made no mistake here after being given a chance by the handicapper. Given a patient ride by Patrick Wadge, he rallied after four out and just got the better of the bold front-runner Our Jet, who also ran with credit. Our finale went to Royal Rhythm who bounced back from a lesser effort to make it two from three since joining Jonjo O’Neill. He quickened up impressively once he was given the hurry up towards the near rail and there could be more to come.

WELCOME TO 1461 PREPARE TO MOUNT UP AND RIDE INTO BATTLE!
TODAY PROVIDES NOT ONLY A CLASH OF RACEHORSES, BUT OF MEDIEVAL KNIGHTS TOO! When we established the Grade 2 Towton Chase back in 1996, we chose a race title that reflected local heritage and Yorkshire grit! The feature race on today’s card is a race named in honour of the Battle of Towton, fought just 10 miles from where you stand today, in the year 1461. In the sixth year of the Wars of the Roses, on a bitterly cold Palm Sunday morning, amidst atrocious weather, howling winds, and driving rain and snow, up to 75,000 soldiers from the Houses of York and Lancaster took part in the bloodiest and most brutal battle ever to be fought on English soil. The battle which was fueled by regional hatreds and family vendettas ensured it was fought with such ferocity that together with the size of the armies involved, and the atrocious weather conditions, culminated in the deaths of an estimated 28,000 men. The site of the battle is preserved today by volunteers from the Towton Battlefield Society who have a series of events and Battlefield Walks and Talks arranged for 2023. The tours take in a 4km circuit of part of the Battlefield, with a guide on hand to describe the events leading up to, during and after the Battle. If you are interested in finding out more please visit www.towton.org.uk As horses in the William Hill Towton Novices’ Chase leave the Parade Ring to go down to the start, we will play a video from the Towton Battlefield Society. Narrated by the late Robert Hardy, the video is wonderfully atmospheric and we hope it gives you a sense of the history behind today’s race.
RACING MEETS HISTORY! We invite you to take a look at a medieval military camp within the Paddock Enclosure, which is brought to you today by Knights in Battle who specialise in bringing medieval history to life. Re-enactors today will be training with weapons, making, mending, carving, whittling, cooking and eating, all as they would have in 1461. They welcome your interest and questions. They will also be undertaking combat and weapon demonstrations, throughout the day. Timings for these will be displayed on a board outside the camp, so look out for this on the day.
FALCONRY Falconry was an important part of life in Medieval Days. Falcons were used as an integral tool for providing food for the table and the birds themselves were an incredibly expensive commodity and were therefore very well cared for and revered.
ROYALS AND NOBLES
.
Royalty and Nobles flew falcons for sport. Mary, Queen of Scots had a passion for falconry and delighted in flying Merlins, and her father Henry VIII was also a prolific falconer, building a mews to rival the size of his stables, just to house his birds of prey. Today we are delighted to welcome SMJ Falconry, who are standing in the Paddock Enclosure with some of their beautiful birds. Please pay them a visit. You are able to handle and photograph the birds today.
MAD MEDIEVAL FACTS Football was banned and archery was compulsory! King Edward II banned football and in 1363 it became compulsory that all male subjects practise archery for 2 hours every Sunday under the supervision of the local clergy. Medieval folk had savings! Dishes and pots were made of a clay called ‘’pygg’’, when people had savings they placed them in a clay pot (coin bank), a pygg bank. . Bears roamed the countryside! England used to be the native home of brown bears, but they became hunted to extinction around the 11th century.

RACE DESCRIPTION The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

THE WILLIAM HILL TOWTON NOVICES’ CHASE
HISTORY The race is named in honour and memory of the ‘BATTLE OF TOWTON’ - the largest & Bloodiest Battle ever fought on English Soil. On Palm Sunday 1461, in atrocious weather - howling wind, driving sleet and snow - the armies of two disputing Kings of England fought all day on a plateau of land less than 10 miles south-east of Wetherby. It is likely that up to seventy-five thousand men fought and as many as twenty-eight thousand died in the battle itself and in the rout and massacres that followed.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and seven furlongs handicap hurdle race/steeple chase for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles, three and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

Longest Traveller: ONE TRUE KING trained by N Twiston-Davies, Cheltenham, 170 miles. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three miles handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to fillies and mares aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.
