Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /. CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race. FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

THE BUZZ by Wetherbee

RACE: 11:50

TWINJETS made the perfect start to life under the tutelage of Paul Nicholls when landing the spoils in taking fashion at Doncaster. The handicapper has had his say by putting the six-year-old up 9lb, but there should be more to come from him over this distance. The Same created a deep impression on his chasing bow when justifying favouritism at Market Rasen and can give the selection plenty to think about.

WIN: TWINJETS

DANGER: THE SAME

RACE: 12:25

ABBEYHILL found only subsequent Ascot scorer Top Cloud too strong on his latest outing at Taunton and a 5lb rise may not be enough to prevent the six-year-old from regaining the winning thread. The hat-trick seeking Shewearsthewellies isn’t taken lightly and is likely to give another good account of herself. Hexham victor Clovis Boy should have more to come now faced with a stiffer test of stamina, while handicap debutant Knacker Trapper is one to consider at longer odds.

WIN: ABBEYHILL

DANGER: SHEWEARSTHEWELLIES

RACE: 13:00

GAZETTE BOURGEOISE was just denied by the progressive James Jet on her seasonal bow at Ffos Las earlier in the month. The pair drew 22 lengths clear of the third-placed finisher that day and a 3lb rise looks far from insurmountable for Ben Case’s charge. Midnight Mary has posted some creditable efforts in class 3 events of late and she should be in the mix on this drop in grade. Anti Bridgie also looks capable of landing a race at this level.

WIN: GAZETTE BOURGEOISE

DANGER: MIDNIGHT MARY

RACE: 13:35

Konfusion has been off for a long time since his third on hurdling debut at Southwell, but is one to consider. Sao Carlos, who was strongly supported in the betting on his jumping bow at Lingfield last month, is also respected despite having jumped out to the right on several occasions. However, BANTEER has a tad more experience and with the form of his Wincanton third looking solid, the Paul Nicholls-trained gelding may have the edge.

WIN: BANTEER

DANGER: SAO CARLOS

RACE: 14:15

Paul Nicholls introduces a highly appealing stable debutant in the shape of KABRAL DU MATHAN, who won his sole start over hurdles in France and looks well placed to make a big impact on his first run on these shores. Having handled cut in the ground, he looks set to encounter ideal underfoot conditions and heads the shortlist based on potential for further progression. Ironopolis and Captain Potter are feared most of those with previous jumping experience, while the ex-Irish Silverbridge is notable on his hurdles/ stable debut.

WIN: KABRAL DU MATHAN

DANGER: IRONOPOLIS

RACE: 14:45

GUNSIGHT RIDGE was beaten into fifth over 2m4f at Aintree when last sighted and the handicapper may have been kind to drop him 2lb for that display. Olly Murphy’s eight-year-old has been sidelined for over a year, but he has won first time out in the past and this trip suits better. Xcitations didn’t run badly in defeat at Newbury last time and is 1lb lower now, so it would be no surprise to see him get into contention. Gold Des Bois is another to note.

WIN: GUNSIGHT RIDGE

DANGER: XCITATIONS

RACE: 15:20

WESTERN HARMONY changed hands for 115,000 pounds in the Goffs UK Spring sales in May and goes for the Nicky Henderson yard on his debut under Rules. The four-year-old was successful in the second of two point-to-points and appears a bright prospect. The Northernlights brings the best known form to the table after his fifth at Cheltenham in October and should take a step forward. Any market support for 135,000-euro purchase Super Saint would make him of significant interest for his powerful connections.

WIN: WESTERN HARMONY

DANGER: THE NORTHERNLIGHTS

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three mile steeple chase and is another for novices’. It is restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not previously won more than two steeple chases. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three mile handicap hurdle for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. It is also limited to conditional jockeys only. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three miles handicap hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards mares which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105.

Into Overdrive took them along at a good gallop under Jamie Hamilton for the first portion of the race. There would be no hiding places for any of those in behind and as they began their final circuit the likes of Does He Know and market leader Karl Philippe began to struggle.

Turning for home it became a match race between Venetia Williams charge and the gutsy Empire Steel. The gallant grey came up alongside Fontaine Collonges as they jumped the third last but slowly the younger legs of Fontaine Collonges began to pull away once more.

Fontaine Collonges began to reel in the long time leader in the back straight, with the winner from 12 months ago fading after doing too much in the early stages.

They would go onto score by 14 lengths after an excellent round of jumping and she looks to be at the very top of her game at the moment. 21

HORSE WELFARE Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACE DESCRIPTION As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.
