Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /. CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race. FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

THE BUZZ by Wetherbee
RACE ONE
MICKS JET proved her 66/1 success in a Cheltenham bumper was no fluke when putting a disappointing comeback behind by her by making the frame in a Listed NH Flat race back at Prestbury Park. She is bred to excel over obstacles and is preferred to Lady In The Park, who was pipped for second by Sweet Honey B at Aintree prior to again taking third at Uttoxeter. Sweet Honey B didn’t quite perform to that level at Lingfield subsequently, while Dontyawantme is worth a look.
WIN: MICKS JET
DANGER: LADY IN THE PARK
RACE TWO
TOM CODY gained compensation for a narrow Newcastle defeat when returning there to land the odds in first-time cheekpieces. He probably didn’t beat much but has plenty of scope for improvement and can go in again. The four-year-old Aristobulus isn’t exactly bred for fences, but jumped well enough to make all over hurdles at Southwell and his weight-for-age allowance might come in handy. Kalpaga took a step back in the right direction at Ludlow and she completes the shortlist.
WIN: TOM CODY
DANGER: ARISTOBULUS
RACE THREE
ONEWAYWEST has found only one too strong on each of his three appearances to date, including when chasing home a smart subsequent winner at Ffos Las. His initial handicap mark could prove quite lenient, although the same can be said for Bataillon, who began his British career in a good Ascot maiden. Elogio was fifth in a handicap on that same card in Berkshire, while Strackan is fancied to step forward on his first foray outside of maiden/novice company.
WIN: ONEWAYWEST
DANGER: BATAILLON
RACE FOUR
INTO OVERDRIVE landed the corresponding event from a 3lb lower mark 12 months ago. The son of Court Cave hasn’t been seen since being pulled up in the Ultima in March, but he has gone well when fresh previously and this would appear to have been the target. Empire Steel made a satisfactory reappearance at Kelso in October and he looks likely to give the selection most to think about, while recent Carlisle scorer Houston Texas heads the remainder.
WIN: INTO OVERDRIVE
DANGER: EMPIRE STEEL
RACE FIVE
Foster’sisland was narrowly denied in this contest last year and he merits respect in his bid to go one better, but SANTOS BLUE could prove to be too strong. Dan Skelton’s charge was far from disgraced in a Premier Handicap at Haydock last time, and he is expected to mount a serious challenge eased in class. Sam’s Choice is most appealing of the remainder, while a return to hurdles might benefit Fair Frontieres.
WIN: SANTOS BLUE
DANGER: FOSTER’SISLAND
RACE SIX
Special Rate has proved a thoroughly likeable type after completing a five-timer over hurdles at Sedgefield in mid-November and he cannot be ruled out in his current mood. However, the six-year-old is now 14lb higher in the ratings and fellow last-time-out winner OUR JET edges the vote. Dan Skelton’s charge races off only 5lb more and he looks the better-treated of the pair. Cornerstone Lad may fare best of the remainder.
WIN: OUR JET
DANGER: SPECIAL RATE
RACE SEVEN
COUP DE COEUR opened his account with a comfortable success at Sedgefield in late-November and his current rating of 108 may underestimate his ability. Although Royal Rhythm was somewhat disappointing when only fifth at Warwick last month, it’s too soon to be writing the seven-year-old off and he should prove more competitive on this occasion. V Twelve and Beat Box are unlikely to be far away either.
WIN: COUP DE COEUR
DANGER: ROYAL RHYTHM

HORSE WELFARE Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst. 15

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two mile, three and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for novice three-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

RACE DESCRIPTION This two miles, five and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 130. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st 2lb so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two mile, three and a half furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115.
