Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /.

RACE: 12:40 The Skeltons like their winners around here and PRESENTING NELLY looks an ideal candidate on her handicap debut, following a pair of successes at Worcester and then Newton Abbot in September. The ground should hold no fears either and she is preferred to returning Kelso runner-up Firth Of Forth and Copshill Lad, who looked in need of this extra yardage at Exeter last month.

RACE: 13:15 An intriguing novice chase where a tentative vote is for APPLE AWAY, who was an impressive winner of the Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree on her most recent start in April. The six-year-old looks just the type to excel over fences and she may have too much for Grey Dawning, who fell in that contest but was a Grade 2 winner at Warwick previously. Ballydesmond cannot be ruled out either.

RACE: 13:50 A consistent sort when beginning his career over hurdles last season, MATCHLESS may be able to go on to better things this time around, and a mark of 119 looks workable. A talented sort for the Gary Moore team, Casa Loupi is of interest on his first start in this sphere in over two years, while Ilanz may prefer better ground but has the form to get involved.

RACE: 14:25 Max Of Stars landed a fourth career success over hurdles at Market Rasen in September, but Ollie Pears’ filly may be worth taking on in these more testing conditions. I STILL HAVE FAITH scored with ease on his hurdling bow over C&D last month, despite being less than fluent, and the gelded son of Expert Eye should put that experience to good use. Balboa and Gifted Angel are worth a second look too.

RACE: 15:00 Dual course winner Shan Blue warrants respect at this venue and the nine-year-old is likely to go close if running anywhere near his best on his return from a 312-day absence. However, Dan Skelton’s gelding has a bit to prove at present and the hat-trick seeking FAMOUS BRIDGE rates as a more solid proposition. The selection was progressing nicely last season and there could be more to come. Dubai Days completes the shortlist.

RACE: 15:35 SUMMER NIGHT CITY had Great Valley behind when taking a big step forward from his debut effort to go in by just over three lengths at Hereford last month, and he should have more to come. The three-yearold has a 7lb penalty to carry, which is unlikely to prevent him from doubling up. As for the latter, he ran out approaching the last at Hereford and could put it up to the selection with a clear round. Any market support for Valadon on his debut should be noted.

RACE: 16:10 ASTA LA PASTA made a successful start over hurdles when scoring by over two lengths at Uttoxeter and this well-bred gelding should have plenty more to come. The son of Walk In The Park is in good hands to keep progressing. The main threat is Little Miss Dante, who struck on her second bumper start at Southwell and has to be considered on her first outing over hurdles. Diamond Ri completes the shortlist.

e from Sheffield has an amazing story to tell. He is a recovering addict; seven years clean. Horses have Steve hanged Steven’s life, lif and fellow Jockey Alison taught him to ride 3 years ago. Steven is racing today for all changed hose he knew who didn those didn’t make it and lost their lives to addiction, in particular his best friend Alan Taylor.

Former Jockey Bob Champion is a huge inspiration to Steven, and he has been given permission today from the Embiricos family to ride in the colours of the great Aldaniti who Bob famously partnered to win the 1981 Grand National! Stevens Gran recently passed and he is therefore also riding for her today!

Deborah eborah was w due to race last year but had to withdraw due to being diagnosed with cancer however after receiving the all-clear Deborah is making a brilliant recovery and we are all delighted that she is well and riding in today’s race, and on her own horse!

Hazel is the local jockey in this race today, having come from just down the road in Harrogate.

Hazel is a professional event rider and has competed at Bramham, Badminton and Burghley, and won at Blair 4* in 2017. We are however hoping she will steer around the fences today!

The British Horse Society will present a prize to the stablehand responsible for the Best Turned Out Horse in this race. They will present a memento to the owner, trainer, and jockey of the winning horse.

LAST TIME OUT | Wednesday 18th October Our first meeting of the season got off to an emphatic start with the four-year-old My Chiquita storming to a nine-and-a-half length victory in the opening race, the Alfred Brown Worsted Mills Ltd Novices’ Hurdle Race.

The Ben Brookhouse-trained filly wasn’t completely fluent throughout but had more than enough to fend off the remainder of the field. Alice Stevens was on board.

Market favourite Bob Bob Ricard was the nearest challenger but was unable to justify the support.

The following race saw the favourite Homme Public secure the honours for Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero. Henry Brooke was on board the six-year-old who completed a length-and-a-quarter success over Geronimo in second. Garde Des Champs finished third.

Short-priced favourite I Still Have Faith made light work of the third race, winning by three-and-three-quarter lengths. The three-year-old completed a double for Brookhouse. That made it three wins in four for the son of Expert Eye. Jack Quinlan made sure there was no danger of Weigh Anchor cutting the deficit, who finished second. Walk The Moon completed the top three.

The fourth race was an exciting encounter with the Lizzie Quinlan-trained Getaway Luv finding just enough to see off Mackenburg by a short head. The eight-year-old made a mistake when two fences from home but soon recovered and kept on well during the run-in.

Mackenburg was slightly hampered by the loose Pay The Piper, who unseated Conor Rabbitt at the fifth, at the last but kept on well and was just held.

Dr Richard Newland took the honours in the fifth race, with Whizz Kid completing a comfortable four-and-a-half length victory , justifying the market support.

The seven-year-old disputed the lead during the early stages before leading when three hurdles from the finish.

Jockey Luke Scott then asked for more and he duly obliged. Hurricane Ali and Coastguard Station finished second and third respectively.

The penultimate race of the day saw Greenall and Guerriero complete a double with Duke Of Deception seeing off Butler’s Brief. Henry Brooke was the jockey and the pair won going away.

The final race of the day was a walkover for Any News with Hometown Boy being a non-runner.

Race preview from Weatherbys One of the highlights of the Charlie Hall meeting is the Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle, a race which Weatherbys are once again proud to sponsor. Eight three-year-olds take their chance in the Listed contest, of which five have already won over hurdles.

The quintet of previous winners includes I Still Have Faith, who justified cramped odds when successful over today’s course-and-distance just 16 days ago. Rated 81 on the Flat, his jumping improved as the race went on and he was well on top at the

The filly Max Of Stars is the most experienced hurdler in the field and is sure to take the field along at a good clip. She has won four of her six starts to date, latterly beating Balboa at Market Rasen and is weighted to confirm the form. The runner-up might appreciate the prevailing conditions more, however, having since won on heavy ground at Chepstow, although he had earlier been beaten by another of today’s rivals, Gifted Angel, at Cartmel in late August.

Tom Dascombe’s grey has since run well on the Flat at Chester and WEATHERBYS RACE PREVIEW

improved again over hurdles when winning at Kempton recently. Rated 105 prior to that success, he now has an official BHA Rating of 120 and is clearly on an upward curve. Based purely on form, he is another to take seriously, although soft ground is a concern for both him and Max Of Stars.

Seraphic is joint top-rated, although his mark of 120 was obtained in France, when trained by Hugo Merienne. The Dubawi gelding won on testing ground at Clairefontaine in the summer, but faded on his British debut on the Flat at Lingfield recently. That victory in France was impressive and the runner-up has since won at Auteuil.

Climate Precedent needs to improve considerably on his Uttoxeter second, whilst the hurdling debutants are both quite interesting. Royal Deeside is rated 74 on the level and ran well on soft ground – over 1m6f – at Salisbury last month. He has a nice way of going and represents Alan King, who won this race in 2018.

And, Running The Game makes his British debut for Gary Moore and Old Gold Racing, having run three times on the Flat in his native France. He travelled quite well on his final start and Moore won this contest with Porticello just two years ago. Admittedly, he was a completely different type of French import, but it seems significant that both trainers are prepared to head straight into Listed company.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
