TIMEFORMVIEWPromising individual.
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.

RACE ONE
TARBAT NESS remains a maiden after 11 starts but was only beaten a length off this mark at Carlisle earlier this month, his third placed effort from three starts in 2023 A repeat of his latest performance may see him get to the front here. That said, Burnage Boy and We’ll Go Again have been running well over jumps this year and both could get involved on their return to the Flat.
WIN: TARBAT NESS
RACE TWO
DANGER: Burnage Boy
Richard Fahey has his two-year-olds running well, and She’s A Gambler looks interesting with plenty of speed in her pedigree. She could go close along with Pinpoint, who looked as if he would benefit from the experience when seventh on debut at Goodwood. However, Alice Haynes has a good record with her juveniles and a chance is taken on her Sioux Nation filly ARIZONA DESERT, who is bred to be a sprinter
WIN: ARIZONA DESERT
RACE THREE
DANGER: She’s A Gambler
Tobetso could prove popular with the William Haggas yard in good form but he hasn’t been seen since coming home fourth at Chepstow last September, and has been gelded since. With that in mind, FAKHRA might have the edge after her debut second earlier in the month, where she was beaten less than a length despite a slow start. The daughter of Zoustar should only improve for that experience, while Viscountess Renard is a newcomer to note.
WIN: FAKHRA
DANGER: Tobetso
WAR CHANT appeals as a likely type to cope with a 6lb penalty imposed for a facile success over an extended mile at Nottingham nine days ago The gelding made all that day and still looks to have plenty of potential. Na Scoitear may find improvement in first-time blinkers, while Annalee Lass is another considered off just 2lb higher than last month’s Ripon success.
WIN: WAR CHANT
DANGER: Na Scoitear
BELTANE made a pleasing start for Michael Appleby when a very close third at Beverley 13 days ago and he looks a solid option, despite having to shoulder 2lb more. He was rated higher earlier in his career, so looks very capable of another bold effort on these terms. The class-dropping Starshiba is feared most, although Ventura Rascal is dangerous to rule out given that he won a claiming handicap off this mark last summer
WIN: BELTANE
DANGER: Starshiba
RAGOSINA didn’t get a clear run last time at Pontefract after a slow start and she did well to go under by just a length in the circumstances. This small field may help and if she can repeat that effort, she could win for the first time. Recent Nottingham runner-up Angels Landing is an obvious rival but top-weight won’t help her cause, while Purnika tries a hood on her first start in handicap company and could surprise a few.
WIN: RAGOSINA
DANGER: Angels Landing
Azeezan appeals on his handicap debut from a very workable mark, while Nibras Rainbow holds a solid chance of at least making the frame based on his nose second at Lingfield latest. However, PARR FIRE has been cut some slack by the handicapper and could provide a bit of value now she tries a longer trip Shot Of Love is closely matched with the selection and is feared most in first-time blinkers.
WIN: PARR FIRE
DANGER: Shot Of Love

South Dakota Sioux gave Mark Winn a great start to the evenings proceedings as he kept on well to take our opener He had dwelt leaving the stalls, but made-up ground stylishly to score with a degree of authority Tantalus had been a runner-up last time out on a career low mark but couldn’t find that extra bit of improvement to go one better. Our second race was over a mile further and went the way of Mirrie Dancers for North Yorkshire based Roger Fell. His five-year-old had been prominent under Jason Hart and was pushed along to lead approaching the three-furlong marker. Coming inside the two he quickened away from his rivals to win comfortably by a length and a half. It was his first run on the turf since February, but he had clearly been primed for this race by his new trainer, who took advantage of falling handicap mark. Our second sprint saw Passionately keep on well to just deny Hot Front and Daniel Tudhope There are few better in a sprint that Jason Hart, who once again showed his skill over the minimum. Passionately had shown fair form on her debut in France, finishing behind a horse who had finished runner-up in a Listed event at Chan-tilly. She shaped as though she’ll get further in time and Amy Murphy could have another useful filly on her hands. Sophia’s Starlight made it two wins from three
starts in our feature race of the day under Oliver Stammers. Sent off the 9/4 favourite, Grant Tuer’s daughter of Hunter’s Light took a keen hold in the early stages but kept enough in the tank to make all. She didn’t see another rival and won a shade cosier than the ¾ length winning margin suggested.
Finest Leader wasn’t the most fluent into stride for Harry & Roger Charlton but showed marked improvement to head Blue Yonder on the line. The gelding clearly benefited from the application of first time cheekpieces and a return to a quicker surface.
Our penultimate race saw the close finishes continue as Red Astaire pipped Bayraat to the post. In winning, he ended a 14-run losing streak and shouldn’t get too big a rise by the handicapper. Bayraat did have the run of the race but was unable to capitalise from his handy position. There will be a race for him down the line.
Jenever gave punters a win in the lucky last as Jenever cleared away readily to win by two lengths under Ben Sanderson. Jessica Macey’s four-year-old was already 2lb well in and looks as though she could have at least 5 or 6lb in hand. He has improved steadily this year and could well make it back-to-back wins on his next start.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our opener is a two mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is a five and a half furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

DECLARED RUNNERS 12
2022: KIND GESTURE 3 8 13 David Egan 4-6 (Roger Varian) 11 ran Running for the first time since Gelding No 5, 6, 7, 9.
Stewards Note:
TOBETSO: Following its run on 8/9/2022 it was reported that the horse lost its left-fore shoe.
Probable S.P’s: 11-10 Fakhra (IRE), 10-1 Tobetso (IRE), Viscountess Renard (IRE), 14-1 Final Credit (IRE), Minneapolis Sound (IRE), 16-1 Chico Dulce (GB), 18-1 Lucky Protector (IRE), Rampant (GB), 22-1 My Boy Benji (GB), 50-1 Wowshesomthingelse (IRE), 66-1 Milky Teal (GB), Kovu (GB)
FAKHRA shaped with abundant promise on debut when finishing a running-on second at Chepstow earlier this month, so Richard Hannon’s filly is fancied to go a place better with improvement on the cards. Tobetso didn’t offer a great deal on both outings as a 2-y-o but he’s in top hands and he could be the one to give the selection most to think about. Newcomer Viscountess Renard and Final Credit can do battle for third place.
The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bread fillies and mares.
BRISTOL STREET MOTORS will present a memento to the winning owner of this race and £50 to the stablehand in charge of the best turned out horse.
If you have dressed to impress this evening then you may enter the competition. Please go to the Parade Ring immediately following the 4th Race at approximately 7.30pm.
There is a fantastic prize on offer to the Winner which includes:
An overnight stay for two with breakfast at the Yorkshire Hotel, Harrogate
Afternoon Tea for two at Mama Doreen's Emporium, Harrogate
A £450 Harrogate Gift Card
A Joint with Guest Annual Badge for Wetherby's 2023-24 Season.
The wearer of the best Hat on the evening will receive a VIP Hospitality Package for two at Wetherby on their choice of fixture from a selection provided during the 2023-24 Season.

PLAY SMARTER
NIBRAS RAINBOW looks ready to strike judged on his recent effort at Lingfield where he was edged out close home by an in-form rival from the Charlie Johnston yard A 1lb nudge for that looks fair and, provided the blinkers work equally well second time round, he may well go one better here. Nightout shaped as though the return to this trip would suit when third at Thirsk last time and is next best ahead of handicap debutant Azeezan.
TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.NIBRAS RAINBOW (IRE)
2.NIGHTOUT
3.AZEEZAN (FR)
