by Wetherbee
RACE ONE
TANTALUS was four lengths clear of the third when runner-up at Catterick over 6f last time and, off the same mark with the addition of first-time cheekpieces, he looks to be the one to side with. Lola’s Moment is considered on her return to action off the lowest mark yet in her young career to date, while Arnie Angell makes his first start for the David Griffiths stable and is also of interest.
WIN: TANTALUS
RACE TWO
DANGER: Lola’s Moment
NATIONAL CHARTER hasn’t been seen on the Flat since April last year, when she was a very respectable third at this track over 1m6f, and if she could bring that level of form to the table, the four-year-old could go very well. Glory And Honour is capable of getting involved off his current mark as he returns to the turf, while Absolute Ruler is another to consider
WIN: NATIONAL CHARTER
RACE THREE
DANGER: Glory And Honour
HUG A TREE finished third at Salisbury on debut and she should have learned a lot from that first race experience. The daughter of Mehmas could be the one to beat if finding some improvement. The main danger might be Hot Front, who is related to plenty of winners and has enough speed in her pedigree to suggest she can be competitive on debut. Any market support for Rocket Money would be interesting.
WIN: HUG A TREE
Race Four
DANGER: Hot Front
SAIL ON SILVERBIRD chased home a couple of promising types when hitting the frame at Wolverhampton two weeks ago She makes her handicap debut from a potentially lenient mark and, with the switch to turf unlikely to pose an issue, the daughter of Twirling Candy can open her account. Harriet’s Angel split rivals in a three-runner contest at Ripon last month and must be of interest upped to 7f for the first time, while Sophia’s Starlight appeals most of the remainder
WIN: SAIL ON SILVERBIRD
Race Five
DANGER: Harriet’s Angel
William Haggas has a good strike-rate at this venue and so it might be worth siding with OPERA LEGEND
The Night Of Thunder gelding raced exclusively over 7f across his three qualifying runs but, with a step up in trip likely to benefit, he can make a successful handicap bow. The hat-trick seeking Blue Yonder is feared most, while Captain Potter is also considered.
WIN: OPERA LEGEND
Race Six
DANGER: Blue Yonder
RED ASTAIRE seemed to appreciate a drop in trip when filling the runner-up spot over this distance at Redcar last month. Tim Easterby’s four-year-old retains the mark from that outing and looks open to further progression here, although the reopposing Muddy Lynn (third) can give the selection plenty to think about. Ricksen returns to turf and completes the shortlist, along with Going Underground and Variety Island.
WIN: RED ASTAIRE
Race Seven
DANGER: Muddy Lynn
Thank The Lord finished a decent third over this trip at Bath last month and must enter calculations off the same mark, but JENEVER looks the one to beat following a fair second over 6f at Thirsk most recently Ben Sanderson knocks 3lb off the gelding’s back, which makes him of significant interest down in trip, while Golden Prosperity and Yaahobby are others worthy of consideration.
WIN: JENEVER
DANGER: Thank The Lord

The first of our eight-race card was the five and a half furlongs Maiden Stakes, which saw Kevin Ryan’s Room Service score a shock win. The two-year-old set off at 20/1 and produced a stellar performance, leading clearly from inside the final furlong to win by a length and a quarter ahead of the favourite Shayekh. The latter just unable to affect proceedings as much as trainer Alice Haynes would have liked.
The Jim Goldie trained American Affair took the second. The three-year-old was prominent throughout under a strong ride from Paul Mulrennan. Glory Sky took second for Richard Hannon, finding no extra to challenge in the run in, while the favourite Purnika rounded out the podium positions.

Platinum Girl took the third, jockey Sean Kirrane keeping his mount prominent throughout. Tim Easterby’s filly doing well to hold off a late challenge from Craig Lidster’s H Key Lails in second. Despite being outpaced late on, the 22/1 Ubettabequick did very well to secure a place, just doing enough to deny fellow outsider The Muffin Man. It was swiftly turning into a day to forget for the favourites, Powerful Response making no impression and only managing ninth. It wasn’t until the fourth contest that a favourite managed to get on the board as Al Baahy was a comfortable winner of the
6.30. Kevin Frost’s gelding led throughout the contest and his lead was never in doubt. Emily Post finished as the runner-up.
The fifth produced a real edge of your seat finish as Arch Moon just found enough to take the lead from Auld Toon Loon in the final strides of the 1m 2f contest. David O’Meara’s runner-up was prominent throughout but hung right-handed and that gave just enough for Arch Moon to steal the win at the end.
The sixth saw a surprising improvement in form for Ballyare, who struggled mightily in his previous few starts, but came up trumps here. He left himself with a lot to do after a slow start but he dug deep and managed to take the win by just a nose at the post.
The penultimate contest saw Bay Dream Believer take the win. Andrew Mullen kept his mount towards the rear, waiting for an opportunity to strike. He switched left inside the final three furlongs before taking the lead inside the final furlong. He kept on well to deny the 28/1 Red Command who looked very strong in second.
Another favourite got on the board in the finale as Premiership justified his strong market support to take the win. He raced in second for much of the contest before taking the lead two furlongs from the finish. The result was never in doubt from here. Kodebreaker did just enough to take second.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 60 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Horse Welfare
Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.
During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.
It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
The British EBF will allocate £2 million to prize money in 2023, thanks to the contributions of our British Stallion studs:
