Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.
The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.
Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted
RACE ONE
BUTCH shed the maiden tag at the fourth time of asking last month and it would be no surprise were the son of Kayf Tara to kick on now. Hurlerontheditch finished a creditable third at Haydock 15 days ago and he remains capable of better eased 1lb in the handicap, while market support must be noted for Finnthemagician, who makes his stable debut for the Nicky Richards team.
WIN: BUTCH
RACE TWO
DANGER: Hurlerontheditch
Resplendent Grey wasn’t disgraced at Huntingdon last month, having won on his debut at Market Rasen in December, and Olly Murphy’s gelding appeals as the type to progress now switched from bumpers to hurdles. However, preference is for the Stuart Crawford-trained debutant JOKER DU CHENET. The son of Doctor Dino is related to some smart types and he ought to posses the ability to land a race of this nature. Stablemate Sunshine Girl heads the remainder
WIN: JOKER DU CHENET
RACE THREE
DANGER: Resplendent Grey
NO REMATCH has been disappointing since landing a claimer at Leicester in February, but he’s favoured at the weights this time around and could get back to winning ways down in grade. First-time cheekpieces could see On The Wild Side improve on recent efforts, while Captain Jack, who hit the crossbar in a similar event five days ago is another to be interested in.
WIN: NO REMATCH
DANGER: On The Wild Side
GREENROCK ABBEY may have disappointed at Stratford last time but he had been in excellent form before that and his record since beginning over fences speaks for itself The seven-year-old can bounce back to winning ways, with the capable Oscars Leader and last month’s Southwell winner Onesoc looking best placed to chase him home. First Revolution and Sao are entitled to be thereabouts as well.
WIN: GREENROCK ABBEY
DANGER: Onesoc
A taking winner at Ayr last time, JOANNA I’M FINE must hold every chance of following up off a 5lb higher mark with conditions in her favour Similar comments apply to recent C&D winner Fiadh, who should be able to uphold form with Rumble B (second) despite being 5lb worse off at the weights. Completing the shortlist are the likes of Baby Jane, Braganza Bay and Storm Force One.
WIN: JOANNA I’M FINE
DANGER: Fiadh
This can go the way of GENTLEMAN DE MAI, who ran a cracker on his chase debut at Ayr in February, a race which has produced no fewer than four winners since. Rose Dobbin’s charge is taken to go one place better on this occasion and can strike at the main expense of the in-form C&D winner Tango Boy, and Hotel Du Nord who did it well at Wincanton last time out.
WIN: GENTLEMAN DE MAI
DANGER: Tango Boy
IL VA DE SOI made both a pleasing stable/Rules debut for Harry Derham when only beaten a head at Kempton in February, and there is likely more to come from the gelded son of Gris De Gris. Booster Bob must hold every chance of securing a double, despite having to shoulder a 7lb penalty for his success over this trip at Ayr on debut, and he is feared most ahead of Support Act.
WIN: IL VA DE SOI
DANGER: Booster Bob
A fairly open second division of the bumper in which marginal preference is for the Dan Skelton-trained COCO MADEMOISELLE She bolted up in a point-to-point in Ireland earlier this year, when trained by Denis Paul Murphy, and is fancied to follow up on her Rules debut for a yard which has enjoyed plenty of success at this track over the years. Light Sentence and Got Your Back add further spice to the race.
WIN: COCO MADEMOISELLE
DANGER: Light Sentence

Can you find all the bunnies hidden at the Racecourse today?
Write down how many you can find in each of the areas below. When you have finished, visit the Paddock Bar to see how well you have done and collect a surprise!
Pre-parade & Saddling Up Stalls
The horses are brought into this area from the stables and are led around to keep warm, you can see them being saddled in this area by their trainers.
Parade Ring & Winners' Enclosure
This is where you can see each horse close-up as they parade before their race. You will also see the 'connections' of each horse; the owners, trainers and stable staff. This is also where the jockeys mount their horse and where the winning and placed horses return to after the race.
Bramham Grandstand
This is where the bunnies go to get a good view of racing. You might need to look here when there isn't a race running.
Photo Flower Hoop
The bunnies love to take selfies here. Take your own selfie here and tag us in as we'd love to see! @wetherbyraces.
Paddock Bar
The bunnies go here to get their glitter tattoo's. How many bunnies can you spot on the outside of the Paddock Bar?
We began the first of seven competitive races with a mare’s maiden hurdle over two miles, five and a half furlongs trip. Paddy Brennan continued his good form improving from his last run to take home the winnings on Pougne Aminta by an impressive twelve lengths. He made all and went easily clear three from home and showed that he was a worthy favourite for the Fergal O’Brien stable.
In the second race it was a much closer contest with Beat The Edge winning by a short head to Patagonia. Under a peach of a ride from Jamie Hamilton, he was towards the rear until making headway three out and he was nudged along to lead. His closest competitor Patagonia ran the race completely differently leading for the majority of the way before being headed by the winner. This spurred him on and Patagonia came back while Beat The Edges was wandering and only narrowly held on.
Cruz Control travelled strongly and led for a long way in the racingtv.com Novices’ Hurdle over two miles. His significant time off the course seems to have worked and he powered home after being shaken up two out and won comfortably by eight lengths. It was seemingly a great day for favourites as he was unstoppable with the rest of the field never a true threat.
In the feature race of the day it was not one for favourites as Albert’s Back made a strong challenge from the last to be victorious under jockey Brian Hughes. He made slow headway at three out which let him be in prime position to travelled well through the field. Hardy Du Seuil was a worthy second being 12 lengths clear of the rest of the field as he got a nice toe into the race from the favourite. He was let down by his jumping and the strong challenge from
the eventual winner. This distance seems to be Albert’s Back key to winning coming close over the same distance in recent runs.
East Street gave Brian Hughes a quick-fire double in the next Clearly it was beneficial this day to track the leaders and make a challenge late on as this is what East Street did. He wasn’t fluent three out and had to be ridden on and eventually led in the closing stages. Keep Wondering provided a good challenge and went on to lead shortly before his early mistakes seemed to have taken it out of him and he had no extra against the charging East Street.
The penultimate race had the prominent No Regrets give Sean Quinlan and Nicky Richards a win on the day. This win denied Brian Hughes a treble on the day as Where’s Hector lost out by a head. Where’s Hector was prominent but hung badly left handed throughout, he went on to lead at two out whereas No Regrets made slow progress. Where’s Hector was soon ridden however No Regrets had just got into his rhythm and was jumping well and came out ahead on the last. He just stayed on to claim the winnings.
To conclude another fabulous day of racing, another favourite Miss Goldfire secured the last by a half a length to Unsinkable Molly B. The latter led from four furlong out but was soon challenged by Miss Goldfire and after being pushed along by Jonathan Burke, he just led in the closing stages with Unsinkable Molly B not being able to close the gap.

Longest Traveller: ICONE D’AUBRELLE trained by N Mulholland, Limpley Stoke, 231 miles.
RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and five furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

RACE DESCRIPTION The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

RESPLENDENT GREY created a good impression when landing a Market Rasen bumper on his debut before not being seen to best effect under a penalty at Huntingdon, so he’s very much of interest now switching to hurdles in what looks a winnable contest. Newcomer Joker du Chenet makes plenty of appeal on paper and strong market support for him would put a slightly different slant on matters. Super Stars may prove best of the rest.

RACE DESCRIPTION Selling races exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a ‘seller’ such as this two miles and three and a half furlongs hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder The auction is often well worth seeing, so make sure to head that way after the race.

MARAJMAN has been better than the result on his last two outings and, returned to hurdling with Brian Hughes booked, he could be the answer to a tricky race. Captain Jack looks a solid alternative and On The Wild Side would be a major player if back in form

Cash Machines are located within the Bramham Hall and Millennium Stand – Level 2.
After 48 years working at Wetherby, Ian Ward is entering the final furlong of his long and distinguished career working at the Racecourse, having announced his intention to retire at this end of this season.
Ian started working on the groundstaff at Wetherby in 1975, under the tutelage of the then Head Groundsman, Cyril Frost, working as part of a team of six men preparing the course for the race meetings, which included the iconic Christmas and Easter race meetings.
At the time of starting his employment, the Racecourse Chairman was Nick Wilmot-Smith and Ian’s first Clerk of the Course was Major John Moon.
In April 1983, Cyril Frost unfortunately passed away, after which Ian was promoted to the position of Head Groundsman (or Course Foreman, as it was at the time) on 1st July 1983, a position that he has held form that day to this, with the current season being his 40th as Head Groundsman.
It was around the time of Ian’s promotion in 1983 that two aditional members of staff joined the Wetherby team. Those two young men were Neal Kidd and Ian Foster, both of whom still work here at Wetherby with Ian and, along with the rest of our grounds team, they work tirelessly, in all weathers, to provide the best ground conditions possible for horses to run on, as well as constantly striving to make improvements to the racecourse itself and the surrounding facilities.
Whilst the team around Ian has been reasonably constant, Ian has seen many changes at Wetherby over the years, such as the replacement of concrete posts and wooden running rails with plasticrail, colourchangesoftheobstaclesfromwhitetoorange(and ironically now back to white again!) The construction of the Weighing Room & Administration building in 1995, the Wetherby Millennium Stand in 1999, the Bramham Hall in 2007 and the Millennium West Stand in 2017 The loss of 2.2 acres of the bottom bend and the subsequent realignment of the home straight in 2005 to accommodate the three lane A1(M) Motorway and the introduction of Flat racing in 2015 are some of the more noteworthy changes that Ian has seen during his time at Wetherby.
During his 48 years at Wetherby, Ian has worked under only two Racecourse Chairman Nick Wilmot-Smith and John Sanderson, and alongside seven Secretary/Racecourse Managers and seven Clerks of the Course, and we are delighted to be able to celebrate Ian’s incredible tenure as Head Groundsman this afternoon.
Whilst Ian is not retiring until the end of the season in July, he has always had a passion for National Hunt Racing and we wanted to mark his wonderful career with a Steeplechase race at one of his beloved Jumps meetings.
On behalf of all past and present colleagues, and everyone else associated with Wetherby Racecourse, we offer our heartfelt congratulations to Ian on what has been a remarkable career and very much hope that he & Pauline both enjoy their retirement when the day comes in July!

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. WETHERBY STEEPLECHASE COMMITTEE LTD will present a memento to the winning owner of this race and £50 to the stablehand in charge of the best turned out horse.
Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.
During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.
It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACE DESCRIPTION This three miles handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st 2lb so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

RACE DESCRIPTION As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is the second division of Race seven. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

COCO MADEMOISELLE got off the mark on her second outing in Irish points earlier in the year so, representing a yard that boast a fine record at this track, she’s fancied to make a winning start under Rules in a contest that may not take much winning.
