THE WEAR A HAT DAY SUPPORTING braintumourresearch.org MARES’ MAIDEN HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4) (GBB RACE)

for maiden four yrs old and upwards fillies and mares x Total prize fund £7000 Owners Prize Money Winner £2921; Second £1461; Third £730; Fourth £365. (Penalty Value £3812.20)

Leading course trainer (17-22): M Hammond (19 wins from 275 runners, 7%) runs VISITE OFFICIELLE

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): F O’Brien (5 wins from 30 runners, 17%) runs POUGNE AMINTA Longest Traveller: POUGNE AMINTA trained by F O’Brien & ALL THE GLORY trained by J O’Neill, both Cheltenham, 170 miles.

RACE DESCRIPTION The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards fillies and mares only in this two miles and five and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

PLAY SMARTER

BRIDGET BREEZE is from a good family and seems sure to build on an encouraging hurdling debut at Ayr 3 weeks ago, especially now that her stamina is drawn out a bit further, so she’s put forward as the selection. Pougne Aminta is sure to be in the thick of the action if reproducing her Southwell form, with Ol’River Shine another possible threat having shaped with some encouragement on her Rules debut at Plumpton in January.
