Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Form Guide

The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.

The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.

FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

THE BUZZ

RACE ONE

This can go the way of POUGNE AMINTA, who ran a cracker on her hurdles debut at Southwell and should be open to plenty more improvement on just her third start under Rules. Bridget Breeze ran a promising race when third at Ayr and she is likely to be thereabouts, along with Ol’river Shine, who was behind a couple of subsequent winners at Plumpton on her hurdles bow.

WIN: POUGNE AMINTA

RACE TWO

DANGER: Bridget Breeze

A taking winner on his chase debut at Market Rasen earlier in the month, there should be plenty more improvement forthcoming from SOMEWHAT CLOUDY as she looks to follow up off a 5lb higher mark. Donald McCain’s mare may not be inconvenienced by the drop in trip and gets the vote ahead of Beat The Edge, who can bounce back from his latest effort, and Getaway Jewel, who has dropped down 1lb below his last winning mark.

WIN: SOMEWHAT CLOUDY

RACE THREE

DANGER: Beat The Edge

CRUZ CONTROL may have not run up to scratch when last seen in Grade 2 company at Cheltenham in January, but this represents a steep drop in grade as the six-year-old looks to bounce back to the form that saw him win easily at Newcastle on his hurdles debut. Thistlebuffs may have been beaten a long way at Kelso but the form of that race has worked out well and must enter calculations alongside newcomer Nab Wood.

WIN: CRUZ CONTROL

RACE FOUR

DANGER: Thistlebuffs

Dancewiththewind is interesting dropping back in distance with Ryan Mania returning to the saddle, but Pyramid Place is higher on the shortlist having had both Celestial Horizon (sixth) and Front View (last) in behind him when he was a good third on his penulitmate start here. However, preference is for the class-dropping HARDY DU SEUIL who is likely to find this is much more to his liking, after struggling in Sandown’s Imperial Cup last time out, and first-time cheekpieces further aid his claims.

WIN: HARDY DU SEUIL

RACE FIVE

DANGER: Pyramid Place

East Street (fourth) wasn’t quite at his best here last month and it would come as no surprise to see him bounce back to give FEIVEL (winner) more of a test today. However, the latter showed a touch of quality under pressure before eventually asserting to emerge as a comfortable winner on the day. The eight-year-old wasn’t disgraced when second in a higher grade at Sandown and he is taken to resume winning ways. Shetland Bus and Lounge Lizard complete the shortlist.

WIN: FEIVEL

RACE SIX

DANGER: East Street

ROSTELLO impressed despite jumping to the left when getting back to winning ways at Southwell last week and he is taken to follow up turned out quickly under a 7lb penalty. No Regrets is unexposed at the trip and rates as a possible improver in first-time cheekpieces, while Where’s Hector also has the potential to step forward now faced with a sterner test of stamina. Ballynagran has won over C&D in the past and is another that could enter calculations.

WIN: ROSTELLO

RACE SEVEN

DANGER: No Regrets

AMARBELLE’S DREAM will need to put her Warwick disappointment behind her but Fergal O’Brien’s filly would hold leading claims judged on her debut second here in December and a first-time tongue tie may help the four-year-old get back on track. Storm Spirit was only just denied when promoted to second on her racecourse bow at Newcastle last month and is feared most, while any market support for unraced duo Perfect Poli and Miss Goldfire should be heeded.

WIN: AMARBELLE’S DREAM

DANGER: Storm Spirit

William Of York got the previous meeting off to a fine start, defeating Sonnemoser by a length for trainer Dan Skelton and jockey Tristan Durrell

It was actually Sonnemoser who was the most popular choice in the market but as unable to justify that support. However, the Dr Richard Newland-trained six-year-old was hampered during the run-in.

The following race saw short-priced favourite Springwell Bay justify his 1-4 starting price by securing a length-and-three-quarters success over Hurricane Highway for trainer Jonjo O’Neill.

Jonjo O’Neill Jr was on board the six-year-old and despite not being fluent when threee out, still had more than enough to fend off any danger from the Evan Williams-trained gelding. The pair were comfortably clear of the remainder of the field with Navigate West a further 23 lengths behind second.

Samuel Drinkwater and Robbie Dunne teamed up to take the honours in the Sandra Finch Surprise Handicap Chase with Gallic Geordie completing a relatively comfortable win ahead of Ladronne. The veteran 10-year-old was held up towards the rear by Dunne before being shaken to take the lead approaching two out. There was never any danger of him relinquishing the lead. Fulgurix and Jet Plane finished third and fourth respectively.

Trainer Olly Murphy continued his excellent recent form by securing the fourth race of the

day with Go Dante, who cruised to a three-anda-half length victory over Mcgowan’s Pass with Sean Bowen on board. The son of Kayf Tara was prominent in the early stages before going second when three out. Bowen then asked for more from the seven-year-old and he duly obliged, staying on well to put the race beyond doubt.

Famous Bridge made it back-to-back wins here, following up his recent win at this tracke earlier in the month. The Nicky Richards-trained gelding was always doing enough and justified his 6-5 starting price. Sean Quinlan took over from Brian Hughes and ensured it was a good month for connections. Lord Of Kerak and First Lord De Cuet finished second and third respectively.

The penultimate race of the day saw a comfortable four-and-a-half length success for Fiadh. Trained by Chris Grant, the seven-year-old benefitted from the first time application of cheekpieces, responding well to a disappointing trip at Newcastle last time out. This win saw Quinlan complete a double on the day.

Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen enjoyed more success in the final race of the day with Indeevar Bleu completing an emphatic 12-length victory in the bumper. The five-year-old was soon clear and was eased towards the finish in an impressive outing.

Around 11,000 new cases of primary brain tumours are diagnosed every year in the UK. 15 every week in Yorkshire!

Yorkshire's Brain Tumour Charity (YBTC) are working to make these numbers smaller, by raising funds to support dedicated research projects into treating and curing child and adult brain tumours.

They also provide grants and financial assistance to brain tumour patients and their carers, they provide vital equipment to hospital wards, to patients and to research centres and they provide vital support to patients and their loved ones through advice clinics, support groups, counselling and holistic therapies.

Brain Tumour Research have a vision to find a cure for all types of Brain Tumours and are the only national charity in the UK focused on finding a cure for all types of brain tumours through campaigning to increase the national investment in brain tumour research to £35 million per year, while fundraising to crease a network of seven sustainable Brain Tumour Centres of Excellence across the UK.

RACE DESCRIPTION The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards fillies and mares only in this two miles and five and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

PLAY SMARTER

BRIDGET BREEZE is from a good family and seems sure to build on an encouraging hurdling debut at Ayr 3 weeks ago, especially now that her stamina is drawn out a bit further, so she’s put forward as the selection. Pougne Aminta is sure to be in the thick of the action if reproducing her Southwell form, with Ol’River Shine another possible threat having shaped with some encouragement on her Rules debut at Plumpton in January.

An impressive winner on hurdles debut at Newcastle in December, CRUZ CONTROL jumped none too fluently and ultimately never figured at Grade 2 level at Cheltenham a month later However, the return to calmer waters rates an obvious plus and he ought to play a lead role despite conceding weight all round. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three miles steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

COSMIC OUTLAW: Following its run on 27/1/2023 it was reported that the horse coughed slightly post-race.

PLAY SMARTER

FEIVEL bumped into an improving sort at Sandown last time and is taken to go one better than last time back at the scene of his win last month. Lounge Lizard will be a danger if the blinkers work as well a second time, while East Street ran poorly behind the selection here last time but will have a say if back to the form he showed when just edged out over C&D prior to that.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three mile handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

HORSE WELFARE

Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.

During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACE DESCRIPTION As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six fillies and mares only and will be run over two miles.
