Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Form Guide

The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.

The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.

FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

THE BUZZ

RACE ONE

FEVER ROQUE bumped into a subsequent winner when finishing runner-up at Newcastle in January and the Rebecca Menzies-trained grey holds leading claims off 1lb lower. Caboy arrives in good form after finishing second at both Musselburgh and Kelso of late and is feared most, while Chris Cool may appreciate the return to an extended 2m5f distance after appearing not to see out the 3m trip here last month.

WIN: FEVER ROQUE

RACE TWO

DANGER: Caboy

QUICK SHARPENER gained his first success in a similar contest here in December and shaped better than the bare form suggests when weakening into seventh on his handicap debut at Carlisle last month. Dr Richard Newland’s inmate looks to have been found a good opportunity to add to his tally now returning to the scene of his C&D win. Halligator may have more to offer after winning on his hurdling debut at Uttoxeter in June, with Riggsby another potential improver.

WIN: QUICK SHARPENER

RACE THREE

DANGER: Halligator

Innisfree Lad escapes a 7lb penalty for winning a conditional jockeys contest at Hereford last Sunday and he’s turned out quickly before his new mark kicks in. David Dennis inmate merits respect, but that effort may have taken something out of him, with similar comments applying to Gwencily Berbas, who won over an extended 3m6f at Exeter 10 days ago With that in mind, the in-form GERYVILLE gets the vote as he looks like he could relish this marathon 3m7f trip and he is a previous course winner

WIN: GERYVILLE

RACE FOUR

DANGER: Innisfree Lad

A tricky puzzle for punters to solve and only a tentative vote goes to JET LEGS, who has filled the runner-up berth the last twice and ran well behind an improver off this mark at Ayr last time. Kadex relished the return to a sounder surface when secondovertheextended3matDoncasteroff3lblowerlatestandrepresentsayardingoodform,whileFameAndConcrete was sent off favourite for his handicap debut when third at Lingfield last month and could have more to offer

WIN: JET LEGS

RACE FIVE

DANGER: Kadex

Beakstown has been keeping good company and a sliding handicap mark brings him into the equation here, while Enzo D’Airy has sounds claims on his second-placed finish off 1lb higher at Lingfield in late January prior to unseating at the first last time. Slight preference, however, is for FAMOUS BRIDGE, who is a big player on his best form He clearly didn’t get 3m on soft ground at Ayr last month and the Nicky Richards-trained gelding will relish the drop trip as well as the 4lb drop in the ratings.

WIN: FAMOUS BRIDGE

RACE SIX

DANGER: Beakstown

Donald McCain has his string in fine form and he can add to his tally here courtesy of GLORY BRIDGE. Runner-up the last twice, his second to Ivetwiggedit off 5lb lower at Doncaster last month has been boosted by the winner scoring impressively twice since and this looks an easier assignment for Brian Hughes’ mount. Inflagrante is sliding down the ratings and could fight it out for the silver medal with Oakmont, who is also beginning to look feasibly treated again.

WIN: GLORY BRIDGE

DANGER: Oakmont

Wetherby Millennium Stand

We were treated to another excellent day of racing here at Wetherby, with seven races taking place on Wednesday 15th February.

The opener saw a two-runner race in which Whistleinthedark cruised to success over Since Day One by nine lengths for jockey Patrick Cowley and trainer Luca Morgan. The eight-year-old made all and produced a fine round of jumping to secure a comfortable win.

It was a close affair in the following race with Solar Sovereign taking the honours in the wetherbyracing.co.uk Novices’ Hurdle for jockey Brian Hughes and trainer Toby Bulgin. Technology received a lot of support in the market but was unable to justify the starting price, finishing two lengths behind the winner. Solar Sovereign briefly led in the early stages before being joined by Technology, but it was the former who found the most, staying on well to clinch the victory.

The third race of the day saw Bois Guillbert deny market favourite Elogio to win by just under two lengths for jockey Stephen Mulqeen. The Lucinda Russell-trained four-year-old travelled particularly strongly and despite not producing the most fluent round of jumping, still had plenty to fend off the dangers. Eagle of The Glen was a well beaten third, 14 lengths behind Elagio.

In the Frank Dawn 90th Birthday Celebration

Handicap Hurdle, the Nicky Henderson-trained Impulsive One found just enough to deny Progressive by a head in an enthralling contest. The five-year-old Impulsive raced freely and was held up in midfield in the early stages by jockey Daryl Jacob, before being pushed along before three out. The gelding then went third two out before staying on well the take the lead in the closing stages.

Trainer Jonjo O’Neill secured his first win of the day with Prince Escalus securing a comfortable win with Jonjo Jr on board. The eight-year-old led narrowly early on before going clear before four out He produced a good jump two out before staying on well to secure a comfortable success. Market favourite Xcitations finished a near four lengths behind in second for trainer Pam Sly. Morgan was hoping for their second win of the day but Hasankey was unable to cut the deficit to the leading duo, finish over five lengths behind the winner in third.

It was an emphatic victory in the penultimate race of the day, The racingtv.com Handicap Chase, with Feivel cruising to a nine length victory over Chris Cool in second. The Stuart Edmundstrained eight-year-old was going best when three out and was pushed along when approaching the last. He soon went clear and won going away. Market favourite East Street was unable to make an impact on proceedings, finish fourth behind Cash To Ash.

The final race of the day saw short-priced favourite White Rhino win by an emphatic seven lengths for trainers Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero. The seven-year-old made it back-to-back wins having won the previous week at Southwell Jockey Craig Nichol nudged the gelding along when two out and soon went clear to complete another fine day of racing.

Pyramid Place finished third for trainer Milton Harris, with Milkwood in fourth for Neil Mulholland.

TREVELYN’S CORN

FORPADDYTHEPLUMBER

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles, five and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

PLAY SMARTER

Cases can be made for a few of these, but FEVER ROQUE has been placed on all 3 completed starts in handicap chases so Rebecca Menzies’ charge is taken to open her account in this sphere at the expense of Chris Cool, who clearly learnt plenty from his chasing debut and matched the best of his hurdles form when finishing runner-up over 3m here last month. Caboy can fill out third spot.

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D Pipe (5 wins from 23 runners, 22%) runs GWENCILY BERBAS

Longest Traveller: GWENCILY BERBAS trained by D Pipe, Wellington, 263 miles.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three miles and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles, five and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140.

It’s probably best not to read too much into PERCUSSION’s disappointing display at Kempton, as he simply doesn’t appear to be anywhere near as effective on right-handed tracks as he is going this way round. The better ground here will help, too, and he could be the answer to a rather tricky-looking contest. Beakstown, Marshalled and Song of Earth all have a bit to prove at present, which leaves Enzo d’Airy and Famous Bridge as the main dangers.

At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.

During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Owners Prize Money Winner £2827; Second £1413; Third £707; Fourth £354; Fifth £176. (Penalty Value £3696.70) Weights raised 1lb and paragraph 34 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable.

Leading course trainer (17-22): D McCain (12 wins from 118 runners, 10%) runs GLORY BRIDGE

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D McCain (7 wins from 39 runners, 18%) runs GLORY BRIDGE

Longest Traveller: DARKEST DAY trained by W Young Jnr, Carluke, 198 miles.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

PLAY SMARTER

GLORY BRIDGE was well clear with a subsequent dual winner when second on his Doncaster handicap debut and still looks well treated despite being raised 5lb for that. Burrows Hall appeals as one who should have more to offer in handicaps and is feared most ahead of fellow handicap newcomer Jukebox d’Eddy
