Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
Form Guide
The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.
The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.
FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK
Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front
You must be 18 or over to place a bet
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

RACE ONE
LARGY SHARK was an impressive winner on his hurdling debut at Ayr in November and he merits the utmost respect, despite having to carry a penalty for that success. Cerendipity has a similar profile to the selection and is an obvious threat following his Catterick victory last month. Get Up Mush was well held at Warwick when last seen but is a player based on his previous effort on his Rules debut.
WIN: LARGY SHARK
RACE TWO
DANGER: Cerendipity
Our Jet merits plenty of respect following his victory over a subsequent winner at Leicester last time. That said, marginal preference is for GEMIRANDE, who readily accounted for Dan Skelton’s gelding when winning at Southwell in November The son of Al Namix was second at Sandown a month ago and another good run may be on the cards. War Lord has yet to show his very best this season but he’s on a workable mark if improving for a first-time tongue-tie.
WIN: GEMIRANDE
RACE THREE
DANGER: Our Jet
RUBY ISLAND confirmed the promise that she displayed in bumpers when winning impressively on her hurdles debut at Ayr in December and the six-year-old is arguably the one to beat on that evidence. Jane Du Berlais accounted for a useful rival, who has won subsequently, at Lingfield last time and she cannot be discounted here. Pass The Love On merits consideration on her return to action, while Just Dottie completes the shortlist.
WIN: RUBY ISLAND
RACE FOUR
DANGER: Jane Du Berlais
BALLYGRIFINCOTTAGE made the perfect start over fences at Haydock when accounting for a useful individual and victory here would seal his place at the Cheltenham Festival, where he ran with credit last season to finish fourth in the Albert Bartlett. O’Toole scored on his chasing bow at Newcastle last month and appears to have plenty of improvement to come now stepping up to 3m. City Chief won at Hereford on his latest outing, but his jumping will need to be better on this occasion.
WIN: BALLYGRIFINCOTTAGE
RACE FIVE
DANGER: O’Toole
HAAFAPIECE has become fairly handicapped once again and took a step back in the right direction when runner-up at Fakenham last month. Twice a winner at this venue last season, the 10-year-old is more than capable of going one better than his latest outing. Bon Retour is respected dropped in grade having struggled at Bangor in November when attempting to complete a hat-trick of victories. Peaceful Sunday also has a squeak.
WIN: HAAFAPIECE
RACE SIX
DANGER: Bon Retour
Ballymoy proved a very useful chaser when last seen under Rules, but he may prove worth taking on after his recent defeats between the flags. NOT THAT FUISSE wasn’t disgraced when finishing fourth in the Foxhunters Champion Hunters’ Chase at Stratford in May last year and looks the one to beat if returning in the same form Moratorium is another who could go well if recapturing the form that saw him finish runner-up at Cheltenham last season.
WIN: NOT THAT FUISSE
RACE SEVEN
DANGER: Moratorium
INTIMATE ran his best race to date when last seen finishing runner-up in a French bumper in April last year and the five-year-old may have more to offer in this sphere for Venetia Williams. Mr Bramley is entitled to improve for his racecourse debut when finishing fifth in a Market Rasen bumper and he warrants consideration. Park Annonciade makes most appeal of the newcomers and any market support for the son of Masked Marvel would be interesting.
WIN: INTIMATE
DANGER: Mr Bramley

Wetherby Millennium Stand
Seven races took centre stage as Wetherby was treated to another entralling day of action.
The day’s opener saw Ballynagran pick up a somewhat surprising victory for trainer Joanne Foster. The eight-year-old was put under some heavy pressure late on by the eventual secondplaced Good Work but just did enough to secure the victory. The prominent Kaphumor rounded out the places with the favourite Bring The Action unfortunately falling at the thirteenth.
The surprises kept on coming as eleven took the track for the second of the day’s racing. The Harry Derham trained Shared a shock winner at a hefty 25/1. The four-year-old was prominent throughout, Paul O’Brien keeping him in touch with the early leaders before pulling the trigger two out. He kept on well to win by two lengths with the similarly impressive Chicago Gal in second, also at 25/1. The favourite Casi Crudo ran well, disputing the lead early on but couldn’t find enough and began to weaken late on.
The trend of big prices continued onwards as Red Ochre shocked those watching, putting on a stunning performance to secure second at an eye-watering 100/1 for trainer Chris Grant. He had every chance approaching the last. Jonjo O’Neill’s Blue Shark however just found enough to clutch the win by half a length despite some less than convincing jumping. Having A Barney rounded out what would have been an impressive tricast, unable to make much of an impression in the final run-in. Another favourite flattered to deceive as Economic Editor found himself bringing up the rear.
There were no big prices to be found however in the fourth, the feature race of the day The Olly Murphy trained No Risk Des Flos continued his love affair with this course, securing his fourth
victory in this one. Sean Bowen held the gelding up in the rear, just keeping in touch with the leaders. While his jumping wasn’t his best work, he really kicked into gear after the last, pulling clear to win by three lengths from The Paddy Pie back in second. Sue Smith’s veteran leading for much of the contest but unable to find any extra late on.
The winner of the fifth certainly wasn’t a surprise as the market favourite of the day, Etalon clutched an easy win for Dan Skelton. The lightly raced six-year-old went off at just 2/5 and really looked the part, his victory never looking in doubt as he finished seven lengths clear of his rivals. He really looks like one to keep an eye on going forward. Jonjo O’Neill’s Big Ambitions did well to come in second, though was no match for the winner and the 66/1 Sea Village took third after a late charge. The penultimate race of the day was the Mares’ Handicap Chase and saw joint favourite Midnight Mary score the win under a classy ride from Bryony Frost for Lucy Wadham She was hard pressed late on but did well under the pressure to keep on well enough to score. Fellow joint favourite Lincoln Lyn could only manage third after some mistakes with her jumping late on. Rounding out the day’s action was the Novices’ Handicap Hurdle where we saw The Imposter take home the spoils. Nigel Hawke’s gelding was always prominent in the field, pressing the leader for the majority of the contest. His jumping wasn’t the most fluent however, but he did enough. Jet Legs largely kept himself to the rear of the field for much of the contest, Sean Quinlan content to just bide his time before kicking on with the challenge from two out. It was a hard-fought battle but despite making a mistake over the last, The Imposter was able to seal the deal.

PREPARE TO MOUNT UP AND RIDE INTO BATTLE!
TODAY PROVIDES NOT ONLY A CLASH OF RACEHORSES, BUT OF MEDIEVAL KNIGHTS TOO!
When we established the Grade 2 Towton Chase back in 1996, we chose a race title that reflected local heritage and Yorkshire grit! The feature race on today’s card is a race named in honour of the Battle of Towton, fought just 10 miles from where you stand today, in the year 1461.
In the sixth year of the Wars of the Roses, on a bitterly cold Palm Sunday morning, amidst atrocious weather, howling winds, and driving rain and snow, up to 75,000 soldiers from the Houses of York and Lancaster took part in the bloodiest and most brutal battle ever to be fought on English soil.
The battle which was fueled by regional hatreds and family vendettas ensured it was fought with such ferocity that together with the size of the armies involved, and the atrocious weather conditions, culminated in the deaths of an estimated 28,000 men.
The site of the battle is preserved today by volunteers from the Towton Battlefield Society who have a series of events and Battlefield Walks and Talks arranged for 2023. The tours take in a 4km circuit of part of the Battlefield, with a guide on hand to describe the events leading up to, during and after the Battle. If you are interested in finding out more please visit www.towton.org.uk
As horses in the William Hill Towton Novices’ Chase leave the Parade Ring to go down to the start, we will play a video from the Towton Battlefield Society. Narrated by the late Robert Hardy, the video is wonderfully atmospheric and we hope it gives you a sense of the history behind today’s race.
WELCOME TO 1461
RACING MEETS HISTORY!
We invite you to take a look at a medieval military camp within the Paddock Enclosure, which is brought to you today by Knights in Battle who specialise in bringing medieval history to life.
Re-enactors today will be training with weapons, making, mending, carving, whittling, cooking and eating, all as they would have in 1461. They welcome your interest and questions.
They will also be undertaking combat and weapon demonstrations, throughout the day Timings for these will be displayed on a board outside the camp, so look out for this on the day
FALCONRY
Falconry was an important part of life in Medieval Days Falcons were used as an integral tool for providing food for the table and the birds themselves were an incredibly expensive commodity and were therefore very well cared for and revered.
ROYALS AND NOBLES
Royalty and Nobles flew falcons for sport. Mary, Queen of Scots had a passion for falconry and delighted in flying Merlins, and her father Henry VIII was also a prolific falconer, building a mews to rival the size of his stables, just to house his birds of prey
Today we are delighted to welcome SMJ Falconry, who are standing in the Paddock Enclosure with some of their beautiful birds. Please pay them a visit. You are able to handle and photograph the birds today

HORSE WELFARE
Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.
During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.
It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150 (also also open to such horses rated 151 and 152). In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

THE WILMOT-SMITH MEMORIAL
Nick and Pat Wilmot-Smith were the third generation of the family to be associated with Wetherby Racecourse, their grandfather being one of the founding directors of the course on its move to its present site in 1891.
Pat was the senior Jockey Club Veterinary Officer (North) before becoming a director of the Racecourse for some years until his death in 1993.
Nick became a director of the Racecourse in 1938, on the death of his father, and remained so for 59 years. He was the Chairman from 1968 and was instrumental in starting the major works that are building up Wetherby to be one of the finest jumping courses in the North. He died in May 2001.
Both Nick and Pat were well known amateur riders before and after the War and keen and enthusiastic riders to hounds. Nick was at one time the only person to have won a race on his own racecourse, while Pat was in the frame for all six races in a contest with the Guards in Palestine during the War.

HISTORY
The race is named in honour and memory of the ‘BATTLE OF TOWTON’ - the largest & Bloodiest Battle ever fought on English Soil.
On Palm Sunday 1461, in atrocious weather - howling wind, driving sleet and snow - the armies of two disputing Kings of England fought all day on a plateau of land less than 10 miles south-east of Wetherby
It is likely that up to seventy-five thousand men fought and as many as twenty-eight thousand died in the battle itself and in the rout and massacres that followed.

Longest Traveller: PEACEFUL SUNDAY trained by S R B Crawford, Ireland.
RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125

Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry.
