Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Form Guide

The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.

The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.

FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front

THE BUZZ

RACE ONE

QUEENS ROCK cruised to success on her hurdling bow and the daughter of Shirocco could be difficult to beat under a penalty, with further improvement a distinct possibility. Micronormous shaped with promise at Wincanton earlier this month, finishing third, and she rates the main danger ahead of Nell’s Bells, who showed a fair level of ability in bumpers. Visite Officielle was supported at big prices at Catterick last month and she’s another who must be of interest.

WIN: QUEENS ROCK

RACE TWO

DANGER: Micronormous

Aire Valley Lad recorded a comfortable success over C&D earlier this month and he demands the utmost respect from a 5lb higher mark, but a chance is taken on GET PREPARED A point-to-point winner, the son of Black Sam Bellamy ought to relish going over the larger obstacles and he could prove fairly treated from a mark of 101 Recent Sedgefield scorer Sir Apollo enters calculations, along with Onestepatatime and Court At Slip

WIN: GET PREPARED

RACE THREE

DANGER: Aire Valley Lad

SPORTING MIKE appeared to be well ahead of the handicapper when recording a comfortable success at Southwell last month and a subsequent 10lb rise might not be enough to stop the five-year-old following up Copperfasten finished a well-beaten third at Exeter last time but she’s fancied to go well on her handicap debut. Where’s Hector had excuses on his latest outing and remains open to improvement, while the consistent Curley Finger is another likely candidate.

WIN: SPORTING MIKE

RACE FOUR

DANGER: Copperfasten

SHAN BLUE is a fascinating runner on his return from 261 days off the track. Dan Skelton’s charge impressively won the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices Chase at Kempton on this day two years ago and you only have to go back three starts for when he tipped up three out in the Charlie Hall over C&D when some 25 lengths clear He makes more appeal than dual Grade 1 winner Chantry House and Rehearsal Chase runner-up Into Overdrive

WIN: SHAN BLUE

RACE FIVE

DANGER: Chantry House

THANKSFORTHEHELP could be very well handicapped on his return to action. Representing shrewd connections, it is interesting that David Pipe’s charge made his handicap debut, and was sent off favourite, at the Punchestown Festival earlier this year A close-up third on that occasion, he is expected to improve for stretching out in trip and gets in here off a light weight. Zabeel Champion may take a step forward in first-time cheekpieces and is noted, along with Ashington.

WIN: THANKSFORTHEHELP

RACE SIX

DANGER: Zabeel Champion

Karl Philippe was a comfortable winner on his most recent outing over this course and distance but a 7lb raised mark could see him struggle today. Therefore, it is easier to side with the grade-dropping ANY NEWS, who was last seen finishing third behind Threeunderthrufive at Warwick in January. He has proven to run well fresh in the past and should not be overlooked, while Brief Times is another to note.

WIN: ANY NEWS

RACE SEVEN

DANGER: Karl Philippe

I Have A Voice is an interesting contender on his handicap bow having bolted up in a maiden hurdle at Southwell last month. He is joint top-rated with Brentford Hope and Clear White Light but gets plenty of weight off his elders today. However, GALAHAD THREEPWOOD ran a cracker when second at Sandown earlier this month and can improve off a 4lb higher mark, while Bridge Road is another to consider having scored at Leicester most recently

WIN: GALAHAD THREEPWOOD

DANGER: I Have A Voice

It was another enthralling day of racing here at Wetherby on Saturday 3rd December.

The Kim Bailey-trained Top Target got proceedings off to a fine start with a three-and-a-half length victory in the opening race of the day. The four-year-old led when four from the finish and travelled strongly throughout. He produced a good jump at the second last which allowed him to extend his lead over Solar Sovereign in second Market favourite Goshhowposh was unable to justify the support, finishing fourth, nearly nine lengths off the winner.

The second race of the day saw Trac secure a comfortable success, winning by just under four lengths over the favourite William Cody. The Micky Hammondtrained five-year-old was held up towards the rear in the early stages by jockey Conor O’Farrell. He disputed the lead when four fences from home before taking the lead when three out. O’Farrell then asked for more and Trac duly obliged, going clear two out.

In the following race, the market favourite Imperial Storm certainly justified the support, winning by three-and-a-quarter lengths over Learntalot. The Fergal O’Brien-trained six-year-old was prominent early on before being pushed along through the home turn Jockey Jack Hogan then asked for more from Imperial Storm and the gelding soon found the answer and went clear before the last. Court At Slip finished a neck behind Learntalot in third.

Burrows Diamond found just enough to take the honours in the Vickers.Bet Handicap Chase defeating Shanty Alley by three-quarters of a length. The Sue Smith-trained seven-year-old was held up in behind the leading pack by jockey Sean Quinlan and despite

a couple of awkward jumps, she responded to well to see out the win. She led narrowly when three out before being pushed along when two from the finish She kept on well in the run-in to fend off the danger from Shanty Alley. Chirico Vallis finished third but was 15 legnths behind second. Grange Ranger received plenty of support in the market but was unable to produce a performance to justify that. The 10-year-old soon weakened after three out and finished 21 lengths off the winner.

The following race saw trainer Michael Scudamore see success with Lebowski completing a comfortable win over short-priced favourite Kellahen. The seven-year-old produced a fine round of jumping and raced in second for large parts. He then disputed the lead before taking the lead when three from home. He went clear soon after and another good jump at the last saw him secure a fine win for jockey Luca Morgan.

Sue Smith then completed a double on the day with Aire Valley Lad winning the penultimate race. The eight-year-old was always doing enough and finished a comfortable four lengths ahead of Conquredalofeurope. Aire Valley Lad was prominent before the second and despite a mistake when three out, he soon recovered to fend off the danger from the Donald McCain-trained gelding.

Another day of fine racing was then completed with Peribonka River winning for trainer Iain Jardine and jockey Conor O’Farrell There was support for Amarbelle’s Dream but the Fergal O’Brien-trained filly was unable to match the winner.

Stockeld Park RDA

www stockeldparkrda.co.uk

Meet Humphrey & Butterscotch (Butsy).

The two ponies are regulars at the weekly sessions run by the Stockeld Park group of Riding for the Disabled. But today they will be in their own special paddock at the races along with their helpers, ready to welcome as many visitors as possible.

Humphrey is a pure bred Dales pony. He is 11 and started going to RDA after Covid. He is a hit with the children because he is so quiet. He bends his head down so they can cuddle him and gets called the BFG, the Big Friendly Giant.

Butsy, as most of the children call him, is a popular member of the RDA team. He is about 23 and has taken part in numerous competitions including Pony Club events. His favourite is show jumping especially when it gets to the jump off. He bombs round the jumps but at RDA he is as quiet as a mouse and very attentive and will do whatever is asked of him. The children love him and he loves them.

Stockeld Park RDA group was set up in 1973 at Stockeld Park and was officially opened by the Princess Royal. Now based at Harrogate Riding Centre, Burn Bridge, the group provides children with physical and learning difficulties from four local schools the opportunity to ride, which as well as bringing great pleasure has many other benefits. The group celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2023. and a number of events are being planned to celebrate this milestone.

Although all RDA groups operate under the umbrella organisation they are independent charities. Helpers and instructors all give their time freely and no charge is made to the children or the schools. The group depends on funds raised through sponsored activities.

Volunteers and supporters from Stockeld Park RDA will be holding an exit collection today after racing and thank you in advance for your donations, which all go to help the club continue.

In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb Leading course trainer (17-22): D Skelton (49 wins from 170 runners, 29%) runs SHAN BLUE Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): N Henderson (5 wins from 20 runners, 25%) runs CHANTRY HOUSE Longest Traveller: LOSTINTRANSLATION trained by J Tizzard, Sherborne, 291 miles.

SHAN BLUE was in the process of delivering one of the most visually impressive displays in the Charlie Hall’s recent history when falling 3 out on return last winter and, whilst unable to build on the promise of that run in 2 starts thereafter, he’s well worth another chance to prove his mark of 148 a lenient one on return for his leading yard Into Overdrive and Sounds Russian are 2 upwardly mobile chasers and rate live dangers, whilst Sporting John is another to keep an eye on.

It was some performance from L’HOMME PRESSE to defy a lofty mark of 164 with something to spare in the Rehearsal at Newcastle and he can make it an impressive 7-8 over fences. Charlie Hall winner Bravemansgame, who is bidding to provide Paul Nicholls with a remarkable 13th win in this midwinter highlight, is feared most ahead of Envoi Allen, who got his career firmly back on track when stepped up to 3m at Down Royal last time.

HORSE WELFARE

Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.

During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles, three and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115.
