THE BUZZ
by Wetherbee
RACE ONE
GOSHHOWPOSH defied odds of 80-1 when filling the runner-up spot at Chepstow on his racecourse bow and he could go one better Howaya Now shaped with promise at Ffos Las last month and is another who could go well, along with Curley Finger, who must carry a penalty for his win at Hexham in May. Top Target hit the woodwork in a bumper at Worcester and has to be of interest for the in-form Kim Bailey team.
WIN: GOSHHOWPOSH
RACE TWO
DANGER: Howaya Now
Black Opium was second at Newcastle last month but the drop back in trip is a slight concern for the eight-year-old. William Cody was a ready winner at Huntingdon but he has an added 6lb for that success and FEVER ROQUE may have his measure. Dropped in class after falling at Musselburgh last month, he may be better suited by the softer ground than some and could carry top-weight to victory.
WIN: FEVER ROQUE
RACE THREE
DANGER: Black Opium
Rebecca Menzies has a good record in this race and that suggests that You Some Boy can go well, although an added 4lb from the handicapper for his most recent effort won’t help IMPERIAL STORM merits plenty of respect now upped in trip after a third at Chepstow last month. There is plenty of stamina in his pedigree and, if he does stay he could get involved on his handicap debut. Court At Slip is another to consider off a decent mark in a competitive event.
WIN: IMPERIAL STORM
RACE FOUR
DANGER: You Some Boy
KALOOKI is a tentative selection having pulled up on three of his last four starts, but he won off a higher mark at Doncaster a year ago This also represents a drop in class and, at his best, he could go very well. Grange Ranger battled on well to win narrowly over C&D last month and cannot be discounted, leaving Chirico Vallis and perhaps Burrows Diamond to battle it out for the minor placing.
WIN: KALOOKI
RACE FIVE
DANGER: Grange Ranger
MCGOWAN’S PASS ran well in defeat here when last seen and, with his yard among the winners lately, he makes plenty of appeal from the foot of the weights. Kellahen won a novice hurdle at Bangor last month and is respected from a workable mark on his handicap debut. Fransham, who is also on a competitive rating, and Word Has It are others to consider
WIN: MCGOWAN’S PASS
RACE SIX
DANGER: Kellahen
HARRY DU BERLAIS proved himself over this distance with a gutsy win at Market Rasen last month. He displayed a willing attitude that day and has a live chance of following up from just a 2lb higher mark. Tango Boy, who won over C&D in October is another with scope for progression as a chaser and has to be taken seriously once again. Aire Valley Lad is also dangerous to underestimate.
WIN: HARRY DU BERLAIS
RACE SEVEN
DANGER: Tango Boy
POUILLY FUISSE is closely related to plenty of winners on the Flat, with her dam being a half-sister to the high-class Phoenix Tower, and she merits plenty of respect here. Whozatgirl ran well on her debut when second in a similar race at Huntingdon last month and is an obvious threat, while Peribonka River and Amarbelle’s Dream both merit a market inspection.
WIN: POUILLY FUISSE
DANGER: Whozatgirl

Another day of fine racing here at Wetherby got off to a convincing start for the Olly Murphy-trained Parliament Hill.
The four-year-old cruised to success in the opener, winning by six lengths, ahead of Hidor De Bersey. Sean Bowen was on board and the jockey pushed Parliament Hill along after four out before being ridden when two fences from the finish. The gelding led approaching the last and kept on strongly to extend his lead in the closing stages Market favourite Escapeandevade was unable to justify the support, finishing third.
It was to be another comfortable win in the following race, with the favourite Spartan Army cruising to success by six lengths The Alan King-trained three-year-old travelled strongly throughout and despite a couple of awkward jumps at the last two hurdles, he quicked clear in the run-in to extend the advantage over Wholeofthemoon.
Wakey Wakey was a further seven lengths behind Wholeofthemoon with Red Command and Famille Verte left comfortably behind in fourth and fifth respectively.
French Paradoxe got his season off to a fine start, winning by three-and-a-quarter lengths over Southern Sam in the Karen Dunbar Highly Commended Handicap Chase for trainer Oliver Signy and jockey Gavin Sheehan. The seven-year-old made a couple of errors but rallied when approaching the last and managed to regain the lead. He then stayed on well to fend off the danger from the Richard Bandey-trained Southern Sam. Contemplatemyfaith was never in contention to challenge the leading pair, finishing a further seven lengths behind Souther Sam and the popular Readysteadybeau disappointed to finish fourth of the five runner field Breizh Alko was pulled up before five out, with the vet saying the gelding was showing signs of heat stress.
The pair of Dan and Harry Skelton got their first win of the meeting in the form of Pembroke, who won comfortably by six-and-a-half lengths over the popular Magic Wave The five-year-old was in touch with the leaders in the early stages and led going easily when three from the finish. Jockey Harry Skelton then asked for more and he duly obliged, going clear from two out. There was a lot of support for Magic Wave but the Mark Walford-trained gelding was no match for the winner. Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen teamed up again to complete a double on the day with No Risk Des Flos completing a comfortable seven length victory in the penultimate race of the day.
The son of No Risk At All was prominent and went second before four fences from the finish He was then ridden to lead when two out before going clear approaching the last. The seven-year-old kept on strongly during the run-in to extend the lead of the market favourite Knickerbockerglory.
The Dan Skelton-trained Knickerbockerglory gained a lot of support before the race and led briefly but was unable to fend off the danger from the winner.
Another fine day of racing was then completed with Lunar Discovery winning the final race of the day. The James Moffatt-trained five-year-old took a keen hold in the early stages before going best when two furlongs out. Jockey Charlotte Jones then asked for more from her and despite running slightly green, she was always doing enough to hold off the danger from Mercian Omen.
Heavenly Clouds had a lot of support in the market but produced a disappointing run for trainer Mel Rowley, finishing seventh.

This race is additionally open to horses rated 106 and 107. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 0 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 107. Leading course trainer (17-22): M

This race is also open to horses rated 116 and 117. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 115 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 110.

Cases can be made for the majority of these but it’s IMPERIAL STORM who stands out on account of raw potential. He has shaped well in his 2 starts over hurdles since returning from a lay-off and there should be better to come now that he’s pitched into a handicap over this new trip You Some Boy bumped into an upwardly-mobile rival at Kelso and is feared greatly for a yard that has saddled the winner of this twice since 2018 Juge Et Parti and Court At Slip should both have a part to play, too.

two miles handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards
rated from 0 to 140. This race is additionally open to horses rated 141 and 142. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate
than that
shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said
be racing from ‘out of the handicap usually a distinct disadvantage. LEBOWSKI and Kellahen both have low mileage in this sphere and could be the pair to concentrate on.
latter did it well when opening his hurdles account at Bangor and is not passed over lightly but Lebowski is preferred. Michael Scudamore’s charge created a good impression when winning his first 2 starts last term and this mark should be within reach. Word Has It and McGowan’s Pass both command respect, while course-specialist Fransham also has claims in what looks a competitive contest.

Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst. The Yorkshire Area Point to Point Club are delighted to present the Yorkshire Air Ambulance with a cheque for £32,532.76 raised at their meeting.
